RECONNECT SUSSEX WITH ITS DOLPHINS Photos: Top Alex Bamford, below Brighton Dolphin Project

M

any businesses and individuals in Sussex feel a close connection to the sea – for many of us, it’s a big part of why we live here! But few are aware of the diversity of marine wildlife that can be found under the waves or the threats to its existence. This is very peculiar when you consider the fact that the Sussex coastline is more than 80 miles along, and approximately 11 million people visit Brighton each year. However, if you look out to sea, there is a hidden world right beneath the waves, which is home to a very charismatic animal…the Dolphin. Dolphins are often seen traveling in large family groups, known as pods, which can vary between 10-50 animals. They are known for performing acrobatic tricks in the air and can often travel hundreds of miles to look for food. It’s just not Dolphins that are found out here: Seals, Seabirds, and Seahorses are just some examples of the variety of amazing marine life that are found along the Sussex coastline. Whilst we have all this incredible marine life, we still know very little about it. But there is one organisation in Brighton that is aiming to change this, by creating a community of Ocean Champions, people who feel empowered to take action that benefits marine conservation: The Brighton Dolphin Project. The Brighton Dolphin Project is an initiative from the World Cetacean Alliance that aims to engage, inspire, and excite everyone in the community about the incredible marine life that can be found right off our coastline, and what can be done to protect it. Since our launch in May 2018, our team of over 100 volunteers have educated over 3,000 people about Sussex marine life from our Dolphin

Discovery Centre, based on the Brighton seafront left of Palace Pier, as well as attending outreach events including Charity Pot Weekends hosted by LUSH Cosmetics, beach cleans, and film screenings. We are actively contributing towards the conservation of marine mammals (dolphins, porpoises, and seals) by creating a public sightings network, which collates sightings of these animals seen along our coastline into a single database, as well as creating a Photo ID catalogue. All of this is shared with us by the Sussex community, including sailors, divers, and fishermen. We now have over 200 sightings, over 100 images and videos, and have identified 6 different species, including the Bottlenose Dolphin. The Brighton Dolphin Project also offers you the opportunity to come on one of our wildlife trips, especially to the Rampion Wind Farm, which provides a unique opportunity to educate people about our local marine wildlife, whilst emphasising the importance of protecting our marine environment. Success is within our grasp if the Sussex community act now to collect data on marine mammals, and unite as one to become a community of Ocean Champions. Without significant change now, we could see them go the way of endangered species, including Elephants and Tigers. Let’s reconnect Sussex with its Dolphins! brightondolphinproject.org

THE LANDLADY A Game Of Numbers

W

hen I first moved to Brighton in my late 20s, I never imagined that I would get old. Surely I would always be staggering out of Coalition (or The Beach, as it was then) at 5am, wishing that it wasn't light as I had to go to work in 2 hours… Well, although Father Time catches up with even the most nimblelimbed over 50, I'm afraid to say that I can stil be seen weaving along the seafront at stupid o clock, after an accidental wrangle with Shoosh, and the like, albeit not on quite the regular basis of days gone by. Brighton, it seems, is a great place to grow old disgracefully and my downstairs tenant would certainly agree with me. A very glamorous pensioner, whose appearance belies her advancing years, this lady has

“All activities were age inappropriate & the 70 year old was the first to arrive and the 18 year old the last to leave”

Last week, she told me that her sons are pressuring her to move nearer them, to the dreaded North! She has to have a few operations this year, so they feel uncomfortable that she lives so far away, should they need to look after her in the future. This is an admirable sentiment, as the opposite was true with my mother and I. But my tenant does not want to leave Brighton, and all the age-inappropriate opportunities it has to offer and is hoping that she can somehow avoid it. I have to admit that nothing could make me leave Brighton and I'm fortunate that nothing could make The Big Son and Daughters leave either. Only last week, I had a lunch party where the 12 guests ranged in age from 70 right down to 18. I can assure you that all activities were age inappropriate for all and interestingly, the 70 year old was the first to arrive and the 18 year old the last to leave....

been my tenant for 16 years. She has put up with all my parties, lodgers thundering up and downstairs at all hours, door slamming, courtesy of The Big Daughter, not to mention The Big Son's 'dark years', when he would often (after several failed essays) abort his attempts to go upstairs and settle down for a nap outside her front door. My tenant has sons herself and I assume this is why she is not put any off the behaviour of my dreadful family.

circumstance of dancing the Can-Can to an audience of drunken miners in a Dawson City casino. Her passion for dance subsequently leads her to an extraordinar journey out of the Yukon and around the world. It’s the story of a journey – a physical one, and also of escape, salvation and eventual understanding and reconciliation, through a process of reconnection with my homeland. “Basically, I talk about how bonkers the Yukon is, sing a song, drink a shot with a severed human toe in it and then finish off with a rousing, one-legged can-can.” ps. “People actually pay to drink the ‘Sour Toe’ cocktail.’ There’s a $2000 CA fine if you steal, maim or swallow it. It used to be $500 but that wasn’t sufficient deterrent.” See Yukon Ho! at Rialto Theatre, Wednesday 17 July at 7.30pm. Tickets are £9/£10 rialtotheatre.co.uk/whats-on/theatre-events/yukon-ho and at Dance House Studios, Worthing on Friday 26 July, 7.30pm. Tickets £10 eventbrite.co.uk/e/yukon-ho-tickets-62636306880

ukon Ho! Tales from the Great White North* is a comedy/dance theatre solo conceived and performed by real life Yukoner Jennifer Irons (performed as her alter-ego ‘Intrepid Jen’). It is a boisterous, cabaret-style survival guide to an unbelievable life in the frozen north of Canada. It is all mostly true. Jen says: “The show focuses on my real-life experiences, growing up in the isolated mining community of Whitehorse. Life in the Yukon Territory was tough, with little prospect of getting to the ‘Outside’ (as Yukoners call the rest of the world!) with many friends and relatives dying far too young either through tragedy or the harsh Arctic winters. ‘Intrepid Jen’, however, finds salvation through performance, in the unlikely

LOOK OUT

We did fod and drink on the show from time to time but never enough. Just before Christmas last Latest Bill had a chat and suggested that I start a new series – “Go away and come up with a new format and title” he said. Well I’m good at titles so off I went and came up with the idea for my new show which is called Look Out! with Andrew Kay. The format is still chat and fun but it’s now going to be an hour long show with several guests, regular music spots and at last a load of food and drink. And right now we are making the first episode with a list of fab guests, some of whom you will know and love. In episode one I have Osaro Ogbeide, local celeb and brilliant creator of dance music. So brilliant in fact that he has written my new theme music and I love it. We will be talking about that of course but also about his inspirational new single which is already recieving acclaim globally – a real star.

“Andrew Kay launches his new show this month with the promise of lots of laughs ”

S

ome of you will have noticed an absence on your Last TV channel over the last month. It’s not that he’s not been there, there have been lots of episodes of Queersay and AK Soufflé as well as Cook It! and International Chef Exchange, but AK has been concentrating on a new show that will start to screen at 9pm every Wednesdsay. We asked him what is going on and why the change. “I’ve been making programmes for the last few years. Cook It! was great fun and has been seen across the UK. International Chef Exchange went on to Amazon Prime and was seen around the world and Queersay has been very popular, so much so that I will be starting a new series of the global LGBT+ news review show very soon. There are already nearly 200 hundred episodes online that capture the changing world gay scene. AK Soufflé has been a real joy and I have had so many amazing guests from the world of TV, theatre and music as well as prominent business people, local politicians and social commentators – and some complete loons too. All of this has added up to nearly 100 episodes of pure joy for me as presenter and producer. When I originally came up with the silly soufflé gag, cheesy and full of hot air, I hadn’t thought it through but soon realised that as I am probably best known for my work with food and drink that it could be confusing.

He will be joined in the studio by Brighton Fringe award winner and comedy songstress Hannah Brackenbury. Hannah writes brilliant comic songs, satirical ditties in the comedy tradition of greats like Victoria Wood, her hero and the core of her award winning show, Victorious. She will certainly be bringing along her guitar so we can expect lots of laughs. There will also be one of my foodie pals in the studio to create some top nosh for us to try, well seeing as I have lost the food element in the show’s name why not put some in the actual show, how perverse is that. Over the weeks I will be lining up local stars and visiting ones too to bring you an hour of entertainment every week. And look out for my exciting new titles that have been brilliantly animated by motion garaphic wizard Daryn Moore. All in all it’s very exciting so thanks for wacthing so far and stay tuned, look out for Look Out! Look Out! with Andrew Kay stars on June ? at 9pm

a brighter brunch reaction was good, he is indeed a very talented young chef. But again times change and Matt has moved on to his own venture in the wilds of Sussex. Pike and Pine as it had become in the evenings gave way to Lucky Khao and I reviewed that on these pages not long ago. I loved the northern Thai dishes that I had, and I loved the buzzy atmosphere that they have created and fabulous staff. Last weekend I was attending Brighton Bear Weekend Picnic in Dorset Gardens when rain stopped play. I was entertaining a friend from Copenhagen and suggested that we retired for a light lunch. Neither of us were hungry for a large meal so I put my brain in gear and came up with a visit to Red Roaster. We arrived to find the place throbbing, and were lucky to get two seats at the counter. It had been a while since I had delved into the day menu but there we found just the right kind of dishes. M chose the fish tacos which he loved, crisp cod in tempura batter with all the right accompaniments and a well balanced splash of hot sauce.

I

love to eat out, that much is so obvious after more than a quarter century of writing this column, and yes, putting it that way does make me feel ancient. I love lunch and dinner and I love breakfast out too, from the occasional indulgence in a full English, not always in a trendy eatery I hasten to add, to a rather more refined offering in somewhere rather fashionable. Brighton has some amazing places to partake in what is so often described as the most important meal of the day. I love the savoury muffins and extraordinary bacon baps at Brewed in Lewes Road, a great

“We left in the drizzle with smiles on our faces and just a hint of fire in our bellies” I could not resits the crab and rice noodle salad. How often have I been disappointed by crab dishes where the named star was in very scant supply. Not here, there was plenty crab through the cooling noodles and the fire of red chilli was in exactly the right proportion too as was the lemon grass and fresh lime. On top a perfect crispy fried soft boiled egg oozed its golden yolk across the dish with unctuous delight. To drink, a couple of mighty red G&T’s, remember this was brunch not brekkie! We left in the drizzle with smiles on our faces and just a hint of fire in our bellies. 1D St. James's Street, Brighton BN2 1RE 01273 686668 redroaster.co.uk

place to escape to on my way into the studio. I indulge my full English needs at Bella Cafe in St James Street and when I want a great coffee I hide away in Red Roaster. Red Roaster became something of an institution on Brighton’s coffee scene for those of us who scorn the major chains with their giant coffees and matching prices. When Red Roaster went for change there was an outcry, how dare they change the look and format of the place, even though it was clearly looking rather tired and had become something of a haunt for groups of people who would all sit around one cappuccino for hours on end. The changes came and the new interior was stunning. Chef Matt Gillan came along and created new dishes and it is safe to say that the

or Oscar Wilde, a writer whose life ended in scandal and tragedy, the everlasting popularity of his work is surely vindication of his supposed crime or dare I suggest his arrogant stupidity in taking his case to law. His work continues to charm and entertain and his life to fascinate generation after generation. Now a witty new play inspired by what happens after the curtain falls on The Importance of Being Earnest is coming to the Connaught Studio in Worthing. In The Odds Of Being Earnest writer Greg Mosse reveals a chance meeting between Lady Bracknell and Reverend Chasuble, 20 years later, on the terrace at Monte Carlo. It answers the questions: Was Bracknell right to prize money above love? Was Chasuble right to reject celibacy and marry Prism? Did Jack and Gwendolen stay in Shropshire? Was it likely that Algernon would make Cecily happy? Over one scandalous summer holiday in Worthing in 1894, Oscar Wilde wrote The Importance of Being Earnest, creating a set of convincing characters, caught up in a brilliant farce that he called ‘a trivial comedy for serious people’. Because the characters are so convincing, we wonder what happens next, whether they will be happy and fulfilled or disappointed and heartbroken. We also want to know how their relationships evolve in the years to come – whether they stay friends, whether they still know one another at all. Acclaimed Sussex writer Greg Mosse says: ‘It’s important to like the characters, even if you don’t admire them, because if you don’t like them you can never understand them. But there are plenty of clues in the original play that indicate that they are not all entirely unselfish people! In the years to come, which ones will be mellowed by time and their responsibilities – and which ones will become more feckless and selfcentred? And what will be the repercussions on everyone else?’ The Odds of Being Earnest is Greg’s second play for the Connaught Studio, following the success of Poisoned Beds with Lucy Flannery in November 2018. The show will be followed by a lively and entertaining post show discussion.
