“Following on from the success of my show Shorts Out! on Latest TV last year, where I introduced lesbian and trans short films, animations and documentaries, I decided to develop the show into a short film festival, and to include in it all the letters of the LGBTQ+ alphabet. It’s incredible that we didn’t already have an LGBTQ+ short film festival in Brighton, but I’m very honoured to be curating it! Shorts Out! will consist of three themes: Family, Self and Love. We have a wide range of shorts – films to make us laugh, to move us, to make us think, and films that will remind us of why we still need a Pride, despite what some people have been claiming recently. Overall, I hope people will leave the screenings feeling uplifted, inspired and, perhaps in some instances, a little more open-minded. After each theme there will be a Q&A with some of the filmmakers, so it will be a great opportunity for people to connect with the creators. We will also have a party at the end of the day, so we hope you will join us for that, too!”

THE LANDLADY Telly Addicts

I

n the words (possibly long-forgotten) of Victor Meldrew, I don’t believe it! I’ve only spent 10 weeks of 2019 in the United Kingdom, yet I seem to have acquired an addiction to the afternoon re-runs of Frasier. I’m sure Channel 4 have cunningly timed these re-runs to fit in with my working hours, so that as soon as I finish at the supermarket, I am guaranteed to spend the subsequent 2 hours glued uselessly to the sofa. I am actually hurrying to type this column so that I won’t miss the opening titles. How sad is that? Furthermore, I’m partial to a bit of Tipping Point and The Chase, which follow on straight after, thus rendering my afternoons entirely useless. The latter two guilty pleasure broadcasts are a source of much hilarity and piss-taking from my various

when the new BIG Telly was delivered some years ago, famously read a book in a tight-lipped and disapproving manner as we all goggled-on. Mind you, since she turned 18 earlier this month, The Small Daughter seems to have developed the social life of a Kardshian (if a Kardashian was to do pub quizzes and go to Prysm), only returning home in order to remove and reapply make-up ready for her next foray. The one thing we all have in common is Love Island. Yes, I know that I’m supposed to be an intelligent(ish) middle-aged, Guardian-reading Brightonian and Love Island is the devil’s work, but just like I can’t leave an unfinished box of After Eights, once I’ve started, I can’t stop. The Big and Small Daughter both agree, although The Big Son would rather stick hot pokers in his eyes and comes out in hives whenever he hears the theme tune. Speaking of which, I can hear that Frasier’s just starting…

offspring, who comment, should I be pretending not to watch The Chase while they’re around, that my Stannah Stairlift must be due for a service. Lest we forget, The Big Daughter some eons ago, spent the best part of her pre-twenties glued uselessly to the sofa like a giant and very belligerent slug, watching more drivel than you could possibly imagine. The Big Son, in a very realistic impersonation of a dead slug, would lie on the floor at her feet, not really caring what was on screen. The Small Daughter has always been the brains of the family and,

QUAD GARY SHAIL’S CELEBRATION OF FORTY YEARS OF QUADROPHENIA.

1978

With the growing success and never ending interest in Quadrophenia it was felt by the fans of the film that its fortieth birthday deserved to be commemorated in the correct manner. There have, and are going to be various events up and down the country, however none will be as big and unique as the event being held on Brighton Palace Pier this coming Bank-Holiday August. Gary Shail one of the stars of the film (having played the part of Spider) has organised what is being hailed as the ‘flagship Quadrophenia event’ a chance for stars and fans of the film alike to enjoy a mammoth twelve hour spectacular of all things Quad! Gary is being joined by many of his co-stars from the iconic film, including Leslie Ash, Toyah, Trevor Laird, Garry Cooper, Phil Davis and Carol Harrison to celebrate along with Mods and fans of the film from all over Europe! This truly unique twelve hours of Nostalgia and Entertainment will include live music from no less than four bands including WHOS NEXT the premier tribute for the group of the same name, also top Mod Bands, THE HIGH-S and SPECIAL GUESTS play alongside THE ELECTRIC STARS. A special acoustic set is also being planned by LEE STEVENS, and watch out for a special appearance from two of the founding members of 70’s Mod revival outfit THE LAMBRETTAS! Drew Stansall formerly of THE SPECIALS will also be presenting a special DJ set with tunes from the era alongside members of MOD RADIO. Legendary DJ, Mike Reid will be presenting the day’s events alongside Gary Shail in a day that promises to provide many surprises and even some magic moments from Paul Weller’s favourite magician, THE MAGIC MOD thrown in for good measure! Of course the day wouldn’t be complete without a special screening of the film on the big screen at the end of the night! Gary Shail and his team have been organising this event since late last year with Gary promising it to be ‘the party to end all parties’.

proved to be a somewhat pivotal year in the illustrious history of British rock band The Who. Keith Moon’s premature death meant that things for the band were never going to be quite the same again! It was also the year that saw the making of a certain film that will be forever associated with the band and all things Mod! The Who having recently acquired an interest in Shepperton Studios were now eager to follow the recent cinematic success of Townshend’s masterpiece, Tommy. The story of Quadrophenia lent itself perfectly to such a treatment, although of course, this movie would eventually prove to be somewhat different to that of Townshend’s original 1973 version! Franc Roddam was the man tasked with the job to bring his interpretation of Quadrophenia to the big screen, in what was an amazing display of confidence in his yet untried skills. Roddam had cut his teeth on TV documentaries, notably the first ‘fly on the wall’ offering entitled, The Family, and was therefore a somewhat ‘off the wall’ choice to make a music based film. However, it proved to be a stroke of genius, his background in the different medium ensured that the reality aspect of the film would forever be its defining strength! Roddam was contracted in June of 1978 and just three months later shot his first scenes on location in Brighton This August Bank-Holiday sees a unique and exciting special party to celebrate the fortieth birthday of an equally unique film, Quadrophenia. Set in the summer of 1964, and featuring Brighton heavily, the two have since become intrinsically linked! Every year hundreds of the films ‘disciples’ descend on their favourite movie’s spiritual home, Brighton, to celebrate and pay homage to what has become ‘a way of life’. Quadrophenia went on to be released in 1979 with what at the time were mixed reviews; however, it has now gone on to enjoy a ‘cult’ status! The original ‘rites of passage’ film that features a young Mod’s journey, a journey we all have to make!

most visited locations, and the film seemingly finding new fans every day! Forty years on since Quadrophenia first hit the big screen it is one film that staunchly refuses to grow old gracefully! BRIGHTON PALACE PIER – SUNDAY 25TH AUGUST 2019. Tickets for the event which takes place at Horatios Bar on Brighton Palace Pier are selling fast and available now from QUAD40.CO.UK

Probably, few involved at the time of filming dared to believe that Quadrophenia would go on to become such a massive hit, and that it would be even more popular some forty years after the film was made! The film came and went on its release in 1979, but the re-release in 1997 and the subsequent transfer to DVD has ensured that its cult status is now well and truly secure! The film’s popularity certainly shows no sign of abating, with the famous ‘Quadrophenia Alley’ in Brighton now one of the area’s

bread of heaven too often the promise of smoked salmon is a let down, too little or too poor in quality. Not at Gail’s, it was first class, as was the potato cake, more latke than the British or Irish farl style and that too was deliciously savoury. The whole was a tasty treat, just the right size, not too big but not mean either and a strawberry juice drink to go with it was very nice and actually tasted of strawberries – result! Mr W is a performer and watching his diet right now but even he was tempted and settled for a chicken and pea pastry that came with a mound of leaves and a great dressing. Again it was a handsome lunch dish that made him smile, as did his organic apple juice. Before leaving I headed back to the counter to choose some bread. No sultana and fennel so I was drawn to the currant and sour cherry sourdough. I love currants, not enough of them around these days, and I love cherries, and

I

’m sticking with a theme of day time delights this week with a trip to a baking favourite. I like to bake but time is a problem for a busy fat lad like me, so finding a loaf I love is a constant quest. I thought I had found my ideal bread when I discovered a fennel and sultana loaf made by Gail’s Bakery on Ocado, yes I shop online for essentials. I had this loaf over and over and then it disappeared to my utter

when I got home it seemed totally appropriate to rip into it and pair it with some salty butter and a slab of creamy Brighton blue cheese from High Weald diary. I have to say the combination was inspired and pretty soon I was fit to busting. I also brought home a loaf that prides (not Mother’s ) its self on aiming to reduce waste by milling left over bread at the bakery to form a grain that is then added to fresh dough. What a great idea and what a tasty loaf. One of the things I love about good bread is that it lasts, ideal for a person living alone like me, and if I have too much I slice and freeze it, that works a treat. dismay. Then I heard that Gail’s had opened in Hove and I met the guys there hoping to purchase my favourite bread. It was not to be, not on the menu. Fortunately there were plenty of tasty alternatives to try and in particular an olive bread that actually has tangible pieces of olive in it! But Hove is not close to home for me or to the office so I was delighted to discover a new branch in North Road, close enough to indulge more frequently. Having enjoyed cakes and coffee in Hove I was eager to try breakfast in Brighton so headed of for a late repast withy my chum Mr W. I say breakfast but this was in fact a late lunch, but the dishes on offer are not time sensitive and it took me very little time to choose the potato cake served with fried egg, smoked salmon and soured cream. nigel slater on toast

stage

“Suddenly all those emotions come flooding back and it isn’t that little boy any more, it’s me”

Food writer, TV presenter and journalist Nigel Slater tells us about seeing his memoirs brought vividly to life on stage in Toast

some pastries waiting. It’s like little doors keep opening and food keeps appearing. The food is almost a cast member in its own right. The cast, as well as having to remember their lines, positions and all the usual things actors do, also have to run into the audience and hand out sweeties and treats. It really makes quite an impact.

What’s Toast about? Toast is the story of a little boy who feels abandoned because his mother dies when he’s very young and his father falls in love with another woman. The boy’s life suddenly changes with the arrival of a woman who’s completely different from his mother. It’s about learning to make your own way and gaining the strength to do something surprising at that young age, make big decisions about your life.

How involved with the production have you been? It is my story, so I do feel protective of it. But Henry got the spirit of the book straight away and Jonnie picked up the sense of fun, so I felt it was all in extremely good hands. I’ve kept a close watch on it, but everyone understood it is more than just a story of a little boy and his mum. It’s a lot bigger than that. It’s affected many people. There are so many children that have felt abandoned after a bereavement. There are so many children that don’t understand why this new person’s come into Dad’s life or Mum’s life that they have to accept. It isn’t just my story. Lots of kids have that emotionally tough time. I hadn’t realised so many people would come up to me, send me letters or write emails saying “That is my story. That happened to me.”

It’s your story, but it sounds like you’ve managed to separate yourself from the character of Nigel. I have, a little bit. There’s 50 years between us! He will always be another person until I sit in the theatre and watch either very tender scenes or very upsetting scenes. Then suddenly all those emotions come flooding back and it isn’t that little boy any more, it’s me. The words I spoke stayed with me. I put them in the book and now they’re on stage as well. What moved you to write your memoirs? I wasn’t the driving force, actually. I was asked to write an article about the food of my childhood. When I started writing, I realised that everything I was tasting brought back a lot of memories. Every food item was associated very clearly with a particular part of my life or vignette from my childhood. The day after it was published, my editor said “I think it should be a book.”

How important is it then that a story that so many people can relate to is touring the UK after its London run? I’m thrilled that it’s in London. I’m overjoyed. But the fact that it’s going to all those cities around Britain is such a buzz. It is a countrywide, universal story; children having a tough time but not being able to talk about it. I couldn’t be happier that it’s going round the country. How closely have you worked with Giles Cooper, who plays the younger Nigel? We have become very good friends. We talk a lot and he asks a lot of questions, which is great, but I’ve never, at any time, said “Nigel wouldn’t do that” or “Nigel didn’t say that.” I don’t want a carbon copy of little Nigel. And Giles is just wonderful. He plays Nigel with aplomb.

How did you feel when playwright Henry Filloux-Bennett asked about adapting it for the theatre? I said “No.” I just didn’t see how it would work on stage. But when he sent part of the script I was completely blown away. I could feel the emotions; I could almost reach out and touch the people. I thought “This is going to work, let’s have a go.” Jonnie Riordon, the director, has done this thing that directors do of making the show not a slightly sad story of a little boy losing his mum and being forced to live with a stepmum he didn’t like, but a really joyous performance. Right from the start, he decided that the heart and soul of this show is food. When I walked in on the very first night at the Lowry in Salford, I thought “Where’s the smell of toast coming from.” It was Jonnie walking round waving bits of toast before the audience sat down. There’s magic to it when the food appears. For instance, my stepmother will open a cupboard and there will be a wonderful cake or

Finally, what can audiences expect from a trip to see Toast? They can expect a magic, the luxury of nostalgia and some fantastic surprises and treats that you don’t usually get at the theatre. It might be worth popping in a Kleenex as well, because there have been quite a few tears. Theatre Royal Brighton Monday 28 October – Saturday 2 November www.atgtickets.com/brighton 0844 871 7650
