OPERATION MINDFALL SAVE YOUR CITY FROM BIOTERRORISTS WITH OPERATION
MINDFALL, THE LATEST GAME FROM HANDMADE MYSTERIES
B
ringing the best of augmented reality to the streets of Brighton and Hove, Handmade Mysteries hosts Operation Mindfall, the first ever city adventure game to arrive in the city. Using a range of whizzy technology and gadgets, our two-hour outdoor immersive experience lets players indulge their ultimate James Bond fantasy as their team of two to five covert operatives must unlock clues hidden around the city. This pulse raising street game combines the best elements of Handmade Mysteries’ twisted escape rooms with a classic treasure hunt, as players explore and discover some of the most interesting areas of central London and Brighton. The most important question is: can they find the antivirus in time to save the world? Augmented reality first hit the mainstream headlines in the summer of 2016 when Pokémon Go took over everybody’s lives. It seemed as though everyone from your nephew to your granny was taking to the streets to find and capture Pokémon characters using their phones to layer another reality over the one visible to the naked eye. Now heralding the next generation of augmented reality technology, Operation Mindfall invites players on a treasure hunt across the city using a tablet and a range of other gadgets and physical props to reveal clues and interact with a host of characters – both real and virtual. Playing in teams, and tracked by an enigmatic host, it is a race against the clock to find the antidote that will save the world. James Addy, chief gamemaker at Handmade Mysteries, said: “AR enables users to experience their world in a completely different way. With Operation Mindfall we wanted to encourage players to discover their city afresh and enter into a new reality. Brighton provides the perfect setting, with teams getting to see lesser known parts of London and learn about cool new places. The game combines the latest technology with live actors to elevate this beyond any standard scavenger hunt and create a fully immersive experience.” With more than nine months until the highly-anticipated theatrical release of Bond 25, let this game be the antidote to the long wait faced by every Bond fan in the city. THE LANDLADY Aint nothing going on but the rent
S
ince I bought my bijou witches' cottage in Turkey six years ago, I have spent a great deal of time there. It is perfectly placed to not only enjoy the beautiful beaches of South Western Turkey, but very handy for a spot of Greek island hopping around the Dodecanese, which are less than ten miles away. Most of the time though, the only 'hopping'I do is the 10 minute bus journey from my cottage in the woods, to the bars in the local harbour. My Turkish friends are nights owls - one of them has owned the local nightclub since 1989 - so there's no such thing as an early night when

Danger Bar and into a taxi to take me back to the village. Indeed, so often has this happened that I am on first name terms with the late night taxi driver. Somewhat embarrassingly, when I'm on a particularly protracted one in Danger Bar, the taxi driver often calls me to ask if I can p!ease go home now as he'd like to finish his shift. The shame. So, last year I decided that enough was enough and that I was going to rent out my cottage and rent a flat in the harbour, figuring that I'd actually save the money from all those early morning taxi fares. My cottage let immediately, but to cut a long story short, I've yet to rent anything in the harbour. Instead, I now use the rent money to pay for boutique hotels in the harbour, which could yet prove to be a pretty dangerous move… Have you heard the one about the woman who walked into a bar and got a massive headache?
I'm there. In spite of all my best intentions to return home on the last dolmush - which leaves at a very adequate 12.30am - I usually find myself staring into the bottom of a half-full ' one for the ditch' way after the last dolmush has left town. My favourite bar, which is called Roll and barely has space to swing, let alone roll a cat has been 're-named Danger Bar by me and my kids, because it's open until the last person leaves… So, when in Turkey, I often unwittingly find myself staggering out of

BLAST OFF WITH DR BUNHEAD
a 'barrage of hilarious contraptions and experiments' Stage

DR BUNHEAD’S BLAST OFF! ARRIVES IN WORTHING, BOLDLY BLOWING THINGS UP IN THE NAME OF SCIENCE
T
V’s most extreme stunt scientist (Brainiac, Blue Peter, The Slammer…) comes to Worthing’s for this joy-ride through the wonders of space science. Dr Bunhead will be at Worthing’s Pavilion Theatre on the Friday 26 and Saturday 27 July 2019, with shows at 11:00am and 2:30pm.
“Pack your safety goggles and space pants! Brainiac is coming to Worthing for an explosive journey into space”
'A pyrotechnic extravaganza' The Daily Mail
Pack your safety goggles and space pants! TV's original Brainiac is coming to Worthing for an explosive journey into space. With help from 'stunt scientist' volunteers from the audience Dr Bunhead will deploy non-stop awesome experiments in his madcap mission to send the first humans to Mars. Stunt hamsters will be bazooka-blasted, fingers will be frozen (solid), heads will be explosively decompressed as we explore the perils of space travel. It's pure live science at its best, with ninja stealth science smuggled in so that kids learn stuff without even realising. Edinburgh-based, renegade teacher Tom Pringle has worked as a globe-trotting, performance scientist since 1996, educating and inspiring kids worldwide with his pioneering approach to science education. His irreverently blended collision of comic improvisation, clown and serious science has been much copied over the years. He has also trained thousands of teachers, scientists and science communicators worldwide on how to make science more accessible and exciting. In 2004 Tom introduced the first ever 100% pure, live science theatre to London's West End, paving the way for subsequent acts to follow.

ONEZEEART
THE SURPRISING NEW GALLERY ON BRIGHTON’S SEAFRONT RUN BY ARTIST, 1:ZE, BRIGHTON’S VERY OWN BANKSY.
S
troll along the promenade by the arches along the Madeira Terraces, and you can spot an intriguing new gallery named Onezeeart. Inside, the gallery boasts a wonderful collection of canvases by a range of street artists, both well-known and up and coming. Even more intriguing is the gallery owner, artist 1:ZE, the moniker of Barry Surtees, whose surprising and unconventional life has brought him to where he is now, proudly promoting a new genre of art, as well as giving life to his own creations. His artworks are striking, both in colour and content. The vividness of bold colours mixed with the textured layers of paper revealing both subtle and stark images means there is a lot to appreciate and discover. The term “street art” may not do justice to the fact these artworks would look equally at home on a street wall, as in a smart abode.
“I love rust, it’s such a wonderful colour which can change almost daily on metal” 10
Barry is familiar with smart abodes, as he spent many years of his life developing many properties, culminating in The Curve, a famous Brighton residence featured on Grand Designs. “I started out as a milkman, then started working on a house and it evolved from there”. From builder and carpenter, Barry describes a cathartic moment when he spotted optical art, “Op Art” in a Hayward Gallery leaflet. Barry’s background in making anything out of wood, evolved into creating variations inspired by the Op Art in the Hayward. He used Perspex, wood, household paints, acrylic cases to create 3D optical illusions of shadows and light. He has always felt comfortable working with building materials including household plaster. “I love rust, it’s such a wonderful colour which can change almost daily on a piece of metal outside.” His experimentations with a range of

T 1:ZE gave us an account of the artists and their works on his walls, too many to list here, but they include Charlie Holt, The Postman, Willem Hansum, Hilary Boardley, Curtains, Kasseus. Barry’s obvious love and interest in the subject means he appreciates where the art originates from, and how it has evolved over time, from scrawls on walls, to murals and stencils. Originally it was a type of guerrilla art, often illegal and associated with the defamation of property. Banksy is perhaps Britain’s best known street artist, but 1:ZE with his new Brighton gallery is bringing may artists to attention. Barry switches his time between Worthing and Spain, and now with the Brighton gallery, Onezeeart, is collating his art from his Worthing studio, and from his Spanish poster collections to share his passion. His main plan is to create a community for street artists to sell their art, and to create an online art business, whereby both the originals and limited edition prints and stencils can be shared and distributed. materials was time-consuming and noisy using drills, chop saws and benches. “I have switched to a quieter art now!” 1:ZE uses the technique of decollage: pasting several layers of posters on top of each other and peeling them away to reveal hidden layers of art, culture, music, famous people, and eye-catching adverts. The posters may depict theatre shows, concerts, photos of Spanish graffiti, and come from derelict billboards, or whatever has caught Barry’s eye. “I drive around looking for interesting posters, and often screech to a halt when I spot one”. 1:ZE initially thought he had invented a new type of art, and then realised his work sits firmly in an actual art movement called Affichism. A type of poster art, which takes posters to a new level, mixing media and striking images to create original and often iconic pictures. 1:ZE describes how the movement was predominant in Europe in the late 1950s and 1960s. Leading proponents of the movement include Jacques Villegle, Raymond Hains and Mimmo Rotella. Following extensive research, Barry became inspired by the greats of this movement, but is also keen to retain his own originality, and magpie-like delight in finding new images and techniques to expand his work. His delight extends to spotting and championing new talented street artists, as well as collaborating with established artists across Europe.

more than a murmur team. With small children of his own he wanted to create a family friendly dining experience that went beyond the usual offering. Using the best of local produce and adapting some of the style of his other restaurant 64 Degrees he has created Murmur which occupies several of the beautifully restored seafront arches just to the east of the i360. Making the most of the sun I joined a group of food colleagues for a lunchtime celebration to mark the end of a major project that most of us had been involved in for the last 15 years. It was a fun but also sad occasion but we were certainly all in a positive frame of mind having realised that what we had set out to do we had succeeded in. Anyway, enough of that and on to the food. I threw caution to the wind and had the asparagus, not great for my gout but at the start of the season the English stuff has to be enjoyed and this generous plate came dressed with ricotta and finely chopped preserved lemon. This was not a combo I had tried before but certainly one I will be copying in future, the mix of sharp lemon and creamy cheese was a brilliant idea. Around me my friends had amazing plates of lobster croquettes and a stunning cauliflower dish that looked amazing, I was both happy and envious. For my main course I had no trouble in choosing a simple grilled plaice with new potatoes and kale. My good friend Mr M queried my choice declaring that a simple grilled fish was no challenge for the kitchen. I rebutted that it was the simplest of dishes that were the biggest challenge, and that getting them right leaves a chef open to real criticism. My plaice was simple perfection, bathed in nut brown butter and accompanied by earthy spuds and bitter kale – simple yes but simply perfect. A side dish of samphire salad was bejewelled with pomegranate seeds and made the perfect refreshing balance to the buttery fish – and I was more than happy. To drink, a selection of local wines of course and a lot of good humour too. No one made it to dessert, sadly but there’s always another day! ith the sun out at last and the rain taking a well earned break it seems appropriate to talk about dining al fresco, an Italian phrase that the Italians simply do not use. Heigh ho, we Brits are pretty good at adopting continental ideas, and with the growth of foreign holidays for the masses in the 1960s, eating outside became something more than a
“My plaice was simple perfection, bathed in nut brown butter – simple yes but simply perfect” pint and a packet of crisps in the pub garden. Here in Brighton we certainly embrace the idea. Thirty odd years ago when I first moved down from the smoke only a few places braved the great outdoors but now… well almost every food place has seating outside in summer and some all year round. Regular readers will know that I am a fan of Donatello and Pinnochio too and both were early adapters of al fresco dining and continue to do so. As a consequence of that early start they do it well and they still serve good and frankly bargain food for their loyal local fans and visitors alike. Down on the beach you get the best of the sun of course as it races from east to west, and right now my favourite place has to be Murmur. Murmur is the creation of award winning chef Michael Bremner and his

ontemporary theatre is a rich stew of theatrical forms, from the earliest types of performing arts right through to the very modern, by way of commedia del arte, Shakespeare, restoration comedy, music hall and so much more. Oh yes, and farce! French farce of course set the tone and for those of us who grew up in 50s and 60s who could forgoet the Whitehall Farces of that era starring Brian Rix who inevitably ended up with his trousers around his ankles sporting spotty boxer shorts. Farce went out of fashion for a while but was brilliantly re-imagined in playes like Noises Off and of course Boeing–Boeing. A well crafted farce is a joy and with the announcement that Susie Blake will play Bertha and Emily Head will play Gretchen in the national tour of the classic West End and Broadway smash hit comedy BOEINGBOEING which opens at Theatre Royal Brighton on 4 September 2019 we are no doubt promised a comedic treat. ormer Brighton manager Alan Mullery will be starring on Latest TV here in Brighton this July. The former Brighton manager will be hosting his own football chat show, Mullery Meets. “I had a wonderful career in football, playing for Spurs and Fulham,” Alan says. “I also won 35 caps for England. Going to the 1970 World Cup Finals in Mexico with players like Bobby Charlton, Gordon Banks and Bobby Moore is something I still treasure. Later I was lucky enough to go straight into managing Brighton when my playing days were over. That was a magical time for me, but nothing can replace the dressing room banter that’s so much part of life as a player. That’s what I want viewers to enjoy when they tune into Mullery Meets.” The new pilot show for this original TV series can be seen on Latest TV every Tuesday evening in July at 7pm and 1am, and also on Thursday mornings at 7.30am. Alan is joined by two of the star players he managed at the Goldstone, Andy Rollings and Gary Chivers, who are both now members of the matchday hospitality team at Brighton’s Amex Stadium. “Andy and Gary were great guests,” smiles Alan. “The feeling when we recorded the show was relaxed and happy with plenty of laughter and that’s exactly what we wanted. Football fans see their favourite players out on the pitch, but they’re never in on the banter you get in every dressing room. That’s what we’ll be sharing with Mullery Meets. I’m very pleased with the pilot show and looking forward to seeing what response we get when the show goes out on Latest TV.” MULLERY MEETS… 2 Latest TV always welcomes feedback from viewers in the Brighton area. Fans can also email Alan direct at his official website www.alanmullery.co.uk Alan has worked closely on the project with his friend and creative partner Tony Norman.
