THE LANDLADY Let There Be Light

O

ne of the major battles I've had over the years in Landlady Towers, is that of electricity wastage. I have always been conscious - my kids would use the term 'tight-arsed ' - of the overuse of natural resources. If one was to pay a visit to Landlady Towers 16 years ago, one would be confronted by a distraught younger me, chasing my wanton offspring around the house and screaming at them to 'switch the effing lights off'. The Big Daughter in particular was a fan of having a brightly lit bedroom, while residing mainly in the sitting room in front of Jeremy Kyle. Meanwhile, The Big Son's bedroom would coral a seething, costly, somewhat hazardous snake-pit of constantly plugged-in chargers of various phones, X boxes and Pokemon games.

daylight. He also, like most Cubans, favours harsh, bright lighting at all times, making my bedroom and living room look rather like Gestapo interrogation chambers. At my age, the last thing you need is any room, let alone a bedroom lit by unfavourable lighting and these days I prefer candlelight (flattering and cheap). Last week however, I played host to 3 Chinese Airbnb guests, whose wanton use of electricity made me wonder if someone else usually paid their bills. Fortunately, they were only in my house for two days, but when I went into the room after they'd checked out, I realised that they'd left the chandelier, three lamps, fairy lights, the bathroom light and the television on, all on a bright, sunny July day. Let's hope they never have to pay their own bills. Otherwise, they'll be in for something of an electric shock.....

“The subsequent 38 years of paying my own bills, has dealt me a fair share of Karma Of course, as a teenager myself, I could barely give half a crap if I left lights, tape recorders and record players (who?) blazing in my parent's house, as it was they, not I who paid the bills and as I had yet another argument with my father over a neglected light switch, I swore that I would not be so anal when I was an old person of 40. The subsequent 38 years of paying my own bills, while also having the responsibility for the wasteful behaviour of others, has dealt me a fair share of Karma, I can tell you. The Cuban has a terrible habit of leaving my bathroom light on, not that it's even necessary as it's adequately lit by

BOOMTOWN 2019 P

robably the best Festival in UK, Boomtown is coming up in less than a month near Brighton and on its 11th edition is looking simply amazing! Held at the beautiful Matterley Estate near Winchester, (Hampshire. SO21 1HW), the mega festival takes place over the second weekend of August between Wednesday 7th August Sunday 11th August 2019. Boomtown began with a small team of music devotees who wanted to put on a party that was outside of the normal festival experience - an experience that brought to life underground music, art and theatre culture. The festival is still independent and run by the same people who started it - but they have come a long way in the last 10 years! From three people sat around a kitchen table sending out handwritten tickets in 2009 to around 40 staff all year round, and over 12,000 crew at the festival, Boomtown has grown exponentially and have become one of the largest, truly independent festivals in the country and they are extremely proud of it! Boomtown is incredibly inclusive, combining most music genres, theatre, interactive set design, inventiveness and distraction, showcasing the pure idea of festival to all ages and backgrounds, even to the new comers who may never been to a festival before. Every kind of musical genre is celebrated at BoomTown, from ska, folk, gypsy, reggae, world, punk, pirate and disco to electro-swing, jazz, bluegrass, bass, jungle and techno, all enjoyed in a spirit of unity and freedom. The line up is so huge that I couldn’t list just some of it, so look for yourself at https://www.boomtownfair.co.uk/artist/ 100’s of independent creative crews from across the globe are spread out over 25 of the most incredible stage sets in the festival world with more than 80 unique and individual street venues The beautiful hilly Matterley Bowl in the South Downs National park is split into four areas, Downtown, Hilltop, Temple Valley and Whistlers Green, with 14 different themed unique areas making up the entertainment areas. The site is HUGE!! about 3km across at its widest and located on a hilly green-field site that utilises the natural bowl, the neighbouring woodland and the surrounding slopes. Getting there is fairly simple and there are many ways to do it. Following

the green ethos of the Festival , they recommend coming via public transport, coaches will be running from over 55 locations UK wide including Brighton (thebiglemon.com/boomtown-festivalcoaches-from-brighton) Shuttle buses also run to and from the local train station in Winchester and taxis and car share schemes are available. The usual questions from the boozers… yes you can BYO !! but up to 16 x 440ml cans of lager/cider/beer OR 17 x 250ml cans of premix spirit drinks OR a 3-litre box of wine OR 7 litres of cider/lager/beer in plastic bottles or cans. As for camping, there is a huge variety included in your entry ticket and really depends on your taste in music and genre with no segregated arenas you can choose the area that represents you the best! But if you have some money to splash out you can spend over £3K for a super luxury Springs Airstream XL Deluxe!

R-E-S-P-E-C-T-! The Festival is also about respect! and in the most vibrant and caring community that the festival world brings together, the organisers not only want you to have the most incredible experience at the festival, but also look out for yourselves, your fellow citizens and the city as a whole, to generally accomplish what doesn’t usually occur in everyday life; a happy, carefree people smiling, helping and caring every corner you turn! (rare site in London underground!) Every street, venue, stage and area of Boomtown aims to be a space for freedom of expression, where everyone is valued for exactly who they are, or helped to be exactly who they want to be! Coming from Brighton we’re mostly used to this concept but it is simple and strong at the same time and it is worth repeating as a mantra ..Do not judge! Respect! It is not easy to describe this festival and this article just provides you with a glimpse of what Boomtown is all about … so , unless you experience it yourself you will never know what you’re missing out! Saying so, all you need to know about the festival is on their website at www.boomtownfair.co.uk I cannot wait to submerge myself in the wonderful world of Boomtowm this year! Watch this space for a review of the 11th amazing chapter of this all round marvellous festival experience. William Ranieri 9

DODO PIZZA Dodo Pizza is the future of innovative takeaways

D

odo Pizza is an international brand that has chosen our beloved city of Brighton as the first site for its innovative store in the UK. Last year, Dodo Pizza made it onto Stagwegs’ list of 50 awesome pizza places in the UK. To Dodo’s this didn’t come as a surprise: unlike many other pizza joints, they only use fresh - never frozen - dough and always fresh ingredients. Dodo is a digital-first pizza company, this doesn’t mean that robots are making your food. It means that thanks to a webcam in the kitchen, you can watch the cooking process from home whilst you wait for your delivery, as well as using the tracking system. The webcam was introduced due to Dodo’s commitment to transparency, which helps the team maintain very high sanitation standards. Anybody can see their spotless kitchen and they are proud to show it off. The live stream is available right on their website, which is user friendly and accessible on your desktop or mobile - as you might expect from a digital-first brand. It’s the open kitchen trend coming right to your screen. So now you can check out your pizza being prepared without leaving the blankets. The system is online 24/7, there are no secrets between Dodo and their clients. Dodo first made it onto the international media scene in 2014 when it performed the world’s first commercial delivery by drone - quite an achievement for a brand born only in 2011. Now, Dodo is one of the fastest growing pizza chains in the world. It operates around 500

units in 12 countries in Eastern Europe, the US and even China and now is beginning its journey in Great Britain. Whether you’re on the go and want to pick up a slice or you’re having a night in with some comfort food, Dodo is definitely your joint. There is always a slice available for grab-andgo and you can be sure it’s fresh thanks to a countdown clock on the screen below. This countdown shows how many minutes have passed since the pizza was made. After 45 minutes, the slices on the counter are sold with a 50% discount. After 60 minutes they are written off and a new pizza takes their place. It's a quick snack that you are looking for? They have a good range of sides that are freshly made everyday. The Dodster, a huge success in other countries, was introduced a month ago and it's already a bestseller. It consists of a tortilla wrap with grilled chicken, fresh cherry tomatoes, mozzarella and a garlic Dodo sauce that - if you are really curious you can check it being made every morning before the store opens on the webcam. If you’re in Brighton and fancy some delicious food for a reasonable price then make sure you pop in to Dodo Pizza! gars and the waiter could read my disappointment from my face and removed it without question. Within a short time a new bowl had arrived and it was bang on. Intensely flavoured chicken broth with the best dumplings in town, noodles and greens. To be frank enough for lunch on its own, but you know how it is, eyes bigger than belly and all that. I decided for the first time to try one of the lunchtime rice bowls, and I chose roast duck and crispy belly pork. It was a feast, perfect plain rice, steamed pak choi in plentiful supply and all topped with meats. Now crispy belly pork is such a favourite and I have to say I am as fond of fatty pork as I am of lean, but here it was lean and tender, juicy and packed with flavour, and there was plenty of it. The duck came as a leg and thigh, cleanly sliced by cleaver through the bone and the whole shrouded in chestnut brown crisp duck skin. Again plenty of it and again juicy and full of flavour. On the side I had my usual saucer of chilli oil, perfect to cut the richness of the meat and to add zing to the rice. It was more than enough and also satisfied my love for Chinese food of quality. I don’t like to complain but I do like it when a professional operation

P

eople often question by what criteria I judge restaurants. It’s not easy, there are so many factors at play, one of which I must admit is my mood. I might be in the mood for fine dining or equally hot for a dish of

“The owner of Gars will tell you that my favourite dish is won ton soup” dirty nachos. Quality of food has to be paramount, value of course and service. Service is incredibly important and one of the things that I always note is how a restaurant deals with a complaint. It amazes me how we Brits will sit and nod our approval when asked if our food is okay, only moments after grumbling about it. Well not me. I think I would be right in saying that any decent restaurant would welcome being told if something does not hot the spot. It happened to me very recently at a very favourite restaurant here in Brighton. I love Gars, I have done for years and the owner will tell you that my favourite dish is won ton soup. On this occasion I had slipped in for lunch between meetings and of course ordered the soup. It wasn’t up to par

TEARS IN THE DUST

I

n a split second, life can be turned upside down and everything we have built is gone for good. This is the powerful message being portrayed in Steve Call’s Tears in the Dust. The gritty drama starring Yorkshire actor, Dean Sills, follows lead character Trevor Wallis (Sills) as his life suddenly collapses and he finds himself sleeping rough on the streets. Trevor, is a successful salesman for a software company whose destructive boss causes him to lose his job, wife and dignity, he then turns to drink to numb his losses and his life spirals out of control until he finds himself homeless. Written and directed by Steve Call, the drama highlights the horror of homelessness in today’s society and how it can happen to anyone. Tears in the Dust has had much interest including both Steve and Dean being featured on TV on the local ITN news in Yorkshire https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QW4ug0U2-V8 and on BBC Radio Sheffield when both of them talked about the horror of life on the street. The drama was released on DVD last year and now the gritty northern drama comes to the TV screens of Brighton on Freeview and Virgin Media and the rest of the UK can watch the drama online at thelatest.co.uk Steve and Dean are both excited to see their work getting commissioned on Latest TV. The channel has a TV programme on it called Homeless By The Sea, where the director Eva Wilshere allows Brighton’s rough sleepers to tell their stories. Tears in the Dust will be shown in 5 parts and features a cameo from Billy Pearce. The drama will help people understand how this can happen to anyone. Tears in the Dust Thursdays at 7.30pm with a repeat at 1:30am.
