acclaimed All Or Nothing The Mod Musical which for two years successfully toured the UK, playing to packed houses, including a sell-out week at the Theatre Royal Brighton, before a run in London’s West End. A QUEER YOUTH INITIATIVE
A Political Festival PETER TATCHELL
Project Director Andrew Kay Queer But Here – with the Longhill School LGBTU Group present the best of Queer But Here, the unique LGBTU Youth chat show with celebrity guests. Growing up gay in the 60s and 70s was not easy and despite supportive family and one or two understanding teachers it was a difficut world in which to to find your place. So much so that many young men and women of my generation found it difficult to come out and some never managed to do that, to find their rightful place in society.
with
PETER TATCHELL’S POLITICAL ACTIVISM & HIS CONTRIBUTION TO THE WORLDWIDE GAY RIGHTS MOVEMENT
Latest CIC had already worked with Longhill School on a drama project for Latest TV and in doing that we saw that the school had an innovative and active LGBTU+ youth group. Moving forward we proposed that we engaged with that group and create a project that would empower those young people to embrace their positions in a modern world, whether they identified as men or women or as gender fluid, whether they believed that they might be gay or straight or bisexual or simply gay allies.
Directed by Bill Smith & Andrew Kay Towards the end of 2018 Peter Tatchell agreed to a long and in depth interview on camera. Using this frank footage and a wide range of archival film and stills from Peter’s own collection Tatchell Activist is an amazing and thorough look at the life of a man who has selflessly dedicated himself to campaigning, protest and activism, often at risk of his health, physical harm and prosecution.
The result has been astonishing. Project director Andrew Kay says; “Working with this extraordinary group of young people aged 11 to 16 has been an eye opening experience. These are intelligent citizens with a story to tell and they do it in a captivating way. I wish that at their age I had been as confident, as bright and as questioning as they are and I am grateful to them for making me look at their work with fresh eyes. None of this would have been possible without the support of the school’s head teacher and staff and of course the generous support of The Rainbow Fund and our colleagues at Latest TV.”
Whilst he has been seen mainly as a campaigner for LGBTQ+ rights his work has been far broader in its humanitarian aims, a fact often ignored or hidden by the media. This brand new documentary seeks to show the balance of this extraordinary man’s work and the impact of his tireless campaigning and dogged determination to create real equalities on a global scale, and it tells his own story in his own words.
Join us to look at the best of their brilliant series Queer But Here! Monday 29th July, 6pm
WE ARE HONOURED TO ANNOUNCE THAT THE SCREENING WILL BE FOLLOWED BY A LIVE Q&A WITH PETER TATCHELL
funded by The Raibow Fund
MO KENNEY
The event will start with two short films directed by Alf Le Flohic:
Performance by Mo Kenney, 19year-old singer/songwriter and LGBTQ+ role model. “I am demented and all my friends are scared of me,” Mo Kenney sings on a beloved, unreleased staple of her live shows. “I am an alien waiting for my family.” Connection—the rare times we have and hold onto it tenuously, the lack or loss of it, the search for it, and even the creeping feeling that it may be unattainable—is a defining theme of the Dartmouth, Nova Scotia songwriter’s body of work.
Brighton Pride 94: a home movie
A couple of queer mates take a VHS camera to Brighton Pride for a laugh and capture the 500-strong march on its way from Hove peace statue to The Level. See Brighton Pride as you may never have seen it before, in some of the earliest known footage.
Let’s Talk About Sydney
Narrated by Val Miles, we meet her uncle Sydney (born in 1921 in Brixton) and hear about his life in the army, his boyfriend Nick and the Campaign for Homosexual Equality in London. Val discovered Sydney’s photograph collection after he died in Sussex and this film is made up almost entirely of those pictures.

giggling squid I chose moo ping because it had the silliest of names but my word I was pleased, tender pork skewers with a zingy tamarind sauce, tender as could be and plentiful too. Moving on Mrs O chose a massaman curry which she loved but declared not quite warm enough. Mr O, a man of conservative tastes normall, chose the sirloin with coconut tips and loved it although he was rather scared by the peppers. Ms C went for the duck confit, a Thai take on the French classic and with it a side of noodles. She loved it and said something I never thought I would hear her say “Actually one of these pieces fo duck would be plenty!”. Still she bravely went froward and demolished it, only leaving behind a few greens. I continued with my theme of silly names and opted for the hunger pang chicken with rainbow salad. Let’s start with the salad which I hoped would be a sharp and spicy mix of green mango and papaaya. It was exacty what I hoped for and a proper portion, not the silly garnish sized effort so common these days.
I
n a city with so many restaurants I am often guilty of forgetting some of the good meals and excellent service that I have experienced over the month, years even! So when an invitation from American friends arrived I was delighted to join them at one of the city’s undoubted successes, if success can be measured in longevity.
“Full marks, delicious food, excellent service, sensible prices and spotlessly clean” Giggling Squid was the cry and I rallied to the call. It must be over five years since I last ate there and back then I enjoyed it. SInce several friends have declared it a favourite so more fool me for forgetting. Anyway it was a sunny evening and I met Mr &Mrs O with Ms C for supper. The place was rammed, always a good sign and thankfully our table was ready and waiting. We started off with a round of drinks, two lemon grass infused G&Ts and a coupe of cold beers, all very welcome. The menu is not too long but there are plenty of choices. The Os decided to share a chicken satay which they scored very highly indeed, amongst the best they had had they declared. Ms C chose a fascinating mushroom dish that was wonderfully earthy and vibrant, I know becuse we swapped bits over.

As for the chicken – well it could not have been better, it was huge, the meat falling from the bone and the whole liberally draped in a rich and spicy sauce, full of bits and bobs that added masses of texture, not the prettiest dish on the table but wow it was tasty. Downside, it took some time to eat, upside, I didn’t need a side dish! All in all full marks, delicious food, excellent service, sensible prices, spotlessly clean and fun. 11 Market Street Brighton BN1 1HH 01273 737373 gigglingsquid.com

THE LANDLADY Danger Bottom
I
'm sitting on the balcony of a boutique hotel in Southern Turkey. Directly in front of me, palm fronds gently sway and beyond them, the swimming pool, then the Mediterranean sea, out of which looms the Greek island of Symi, some 10 miles away. I'm so relaxed, that I forgot to write this column, and as I write with the clock ticking, The Small Daughter has been despatched to make me a coffee to shake off my drowsiness.
