ach month Latest TV presents a selection of films from around the country by amazing filmmakers. The films we show are their premiers on TV. They have never been shown on TV despite being of outstanding quality and covering innovative subjects. We put out a call on Shooting People, a social network of independent filmmakers covering local, national and international filmmakers, and many were pleased to be able to show their films on television. Television is notoriously difficult for filmmakers to get their work shown, but we overturn that old stuffy attitude, and are invariably proud to present all of the films sent to us. Tune in every Thursday evening between 09:00 and 10:00 pm. The films cover all genres from comedy to science fiction, from music to drama, some funny, some sad, all beautifully made and very watchable. And check out the films below:

THE LANDLADY Life… Oh Life…

orry to rub it in, but I’m currently sitting on yet another balcony of yet another boutique hotel, this time in Bodrum, Turkey. It is Saturday night and beyond the glimmer of the pool, I can just make out the lights of the yacht masts in Bodrum Marina. The sound of an open-air Turkish pop concert wafts over the air. From here it is not too unpleasant, but I wouldn’t like to be any closer, as to me all modern Turkish music sounds like ‘Big in Japan’ by Alphaville, which I never liked in the first place. I am in Bodrum for three days to wave off my visiting offspring oneby-one. The Small Daughter was the last to leave this evening on a much-delayed flight to rainy Gatwick. TSD left too late for me to be able to catch the ferry back to the little town where my Turkish house is, so I’m

“Normally, I wouldn’t be quite so rude, but I’m in rather a pensive mood”

I have time to think about anything other than dying embarrassingly of a heart attack on a steep hill in Bodrum), I started thinking how lucky I am. I know lot of people with way more money than me, who are Faginlike in their enjoyment of life, counting every penny as if it’s their last. They already have enough money to enjoy a fabulous life, yet are waiting for the perfect time to do so. Knowing when to start is good. Knowing when to stop is crucial. I stopped more than 15 years ago (possibly imagining that the only time I would enjoy my money would be at my own funeral) and I have never looked back and wished I’d made more money, which frankly was going begging in the late ‘90s. In the Kitchen at The Supermarket, another staff member with whom I used to work had the perfect analogy for the work/life balance. She’d always say to me that as soon as she switched on the light in the morning at work, everything she did thereafter was in preparation for going home. I totally agree.

‘forced’ to stay another night in this very pleasant boutique hotel. The hotel owner offered me a free drink, then tried to corner me, but I thanked him profusely for my ‘free drink’, then went to drink it alone on my balcony. Normally, I wouldn’t be quite so rude, but I’m in rather a pensive mood as I went jogging this evening at sunset on my normal Bodrum run, which begins with a 1.5k steep climb to some deserted windmills west of the Marina, from where you get a spectacular 360 view of the Bodrum Peninsula. There, and on the downhill home run (on the downhill stretch,

old ship ahoy Mr L started with some rather amazing crispy wantons filled with coconut, satay, and fermented bok choy. It was good, it was generous and it was well balanced. My dish of seared mackerel was superb, a beautifully filleted piece of fish with an amazing mango sauce and samphire, I could not have been happier or more impressed, it looked and tasted wonderful. Mr L moved on to guinea fowl which he declared was beautifully cooked and presented. It looked very fine indeed but what really impressed was that for a prettily plated dish it was not mean, and I think most of you know what I mean by that – pretty plates and scant portions – not here! I chose the hake and loved it, a large piece of perfectly cooked fish served with ratte potatoes, asparagus, hazelnuts and mussel sauce. It was a superbly conceived and constructed dish, the hazelnuts and asparagus in plentiful surprise and the creamy mussel sauce beautifully flavourful. A side of buttered new potatoes was good but a second of hisbe cabbage with bacon lardons was just brilliant. I love it when side dishes show the same attention and care as the main events and in many restaurants this would have earned a place on the menu as a starter dish that’s for sure.

THE WARDROOM he first time I ate at The Old Ship it was all silver service and cropped mess jackets. The second time I sat next to Julie Burchill who sent back her steak when it arrived uncooked with a lava hot stone for her to cook it on – not her style at all. Well things have changed and the restaurant now branded The Ward Room has certainly grown up. I guess we might have diminished

T

“Impressive – stunningly presented but so much more!” expectations of restaurants in hotels but surely that is based on experiences way back in history. These days hotels are certainly upping the ante and not just for their guests but for the rest of us too. I went along with my regular dining friend Mr L for a midweek dinner. It had been a hot day but the large room was cool and the views are second to none, especially from our window seat. Firstly I would commend the level of service from start to finish, charming and unhurried, classic presentation, attentive but not in your face, just what I enjoy. The menu is small, not packed with predictable crowd pleasers but filled with the kind of dishes that I am used to finding on the menus of smaller independent eateries where everything is made on the premises. It was a good sign.

LATEST TV | VIRGIN MEDIA 159 | FREEVIEW CHANNEL 7

Desserts were equally impressive, stunningly presented but so much more. My apple and cinnamon cheese cake was artfully created and Mr L’s coffee and chocolate confection put a very big smile on his face. We left the choice of wine to the delightful manager and she chose well, crisp, dry but full bodied white. With sensible prices this has to be a place to return to – the chef Phil is definitely one to watch.
