MACBETH

John Simm and Dervla Kirwan star in the new production of Shakepseare’s dark Scottish play at Chichester Festival Theatre

C

hichester Festival Theatre’s new production of Shakespeare’s famous tragedy Macbeth, starring John Simm and Dervla Kirwan as the corrupted couple whose ambition brings tyranny and chaos in its wake, will mark a homecoming for its director, Paul Miller. ‘I was born in Chichester and my family goes back several generations on the south coast,’ he recalls. ‘I saw a lot of the summer programmes in the late 70s through to the mid 80s, so it was my theatrical upbringing’. Now Artistic Director of the prestigious Orange Tree Theatre in Richmond, Paul has directed John Simm in several new plays (one of which brought John an Olivier Award nomination), and in a successful production of Hamlet at Sheffield Crucible. ‘Practically as the lights came down on the last performance, he turned to me and said ‘I want to do Macbeth next’. The star of such hit TV series as Strangers, Collateral, Dr Who and Life on Mars, Paul points out that John is ‘a remarkable stage actor; if you’ve never seen him on stage you have to take this chance, because he’s got a real stage presence and voice and intelligence. That quality of nervous, flickering thoughtfulness that he brings is perfect for this part.’ With its supernatural elements of witches and apparitions, combined with violent action, poetry and edge-of-the-seat storytelling, Macbeth is a potent brew. How will Paul be approaching the production? ‘We’re trying to conjure a world that feels recognisable but a little remote,

“With its supernatural elements of witches and apparitions, combined with violent action, poetry and edge-of-the-seat storytelling, Macbeth is a potent brew”

like some frozen part of Northern Europe, maybe 100 years ago, but where a physical brutality is still very much part of life. ‘Macbeth starts on a journey into his own mind. He’s both delusional but also very self-aware and fascinated by the inner contours of his own mind and his soul. One of the reasons I didn’t want to put it in a modern political setting is precisely because it might reduce it. It’s most potent when it exists as a metaphor. But I think it’s very easy to see all sorts of contemporary parallells: people make one terrible decision and that leads inexorably to another bad decision, and they get more and more boxed into their own position. ‘I also think it paints a very brilliant, vivid picture of the isolation that comes with power. The more power is exercised arbitrarily, or irrationally, the more fundamentally isolated the person becomes.’ Finally, Paul adds, ‘Macbeth is a very famous play and in theatre circles there’s a tendency for people to ask a director: ‘What are you going to do with it?’. I always think it’s terribly important to remember that on any given performance, for a sizable number of people this will be a story which they’ve never seen before. So I look forward, hopefully, to telling the story freshly, for them.’ Macbeth runs at Chichester Festival Theatre 21 September – 26 October: www.cft.org.uk.

COMMUNITY RALLIES ROUND TO SUPPORT

ROPETACKLE ARTS CENTRE

booking and reserved seating” Ropetackle regulars South Coast Soul Revue will also be performing a fundraising gig on Friday 6th September. The night kicks off at 8pm with the Lindsey Oliver Band, whose brilliant first album “you me us” is out now. Next up will be some original soul ‘n’ funk from the fantastic Frank Greene Band, featuring SCSR vocalists, Ruby and Danny, while the full band will close the show with 60 minutes of high-energy music. Tickets are £20 and available online or from the Box Office on 01273 464440. All proceeds will go directly to Ropetackle.

tanding proudly at the mouth of the River Adur, Shoreham-by-Sea’s award-winning purpose-built venue Ropetackle Arts Centre, has been at the heart of the community since it first opened 12 years ago. But in these challenging times, the venue has found it increasingly difficult to meet increasing costs without core funding. A campaign launched a month ago to keep the place open – Ropetackle 2020 - has seen hundreds of residents and supporters pledge more than £20,000 to keep the doors open. Ropetackle is an independent charity, and trustees hope the target of £30,000 will be match-funded to reach at least £50,000 over a one-year period.

“This venue, with its varied offering, is a vital element in what makes Shoreham-by-Sea such a wonderful place to live” “We know that Ropetackle is highly valued by the local community and our wider audiences, but to see this level of support so early on is truly gratifying,” said Martin Allen, Chairman of the Ropetackle Trust. Ropetackle has hosted an array of high-profile performers, bringing big names to the small stage with a friendly, intimate ambiance. Alan Carr, Romesh Ranganathan and Jack Dee have all been on the bill this year. As well as live music, film and comedy, the venue is also building a name for its children’s theatre programme, with upcoming October shows including The Scarecrows’ Wedding and You’ve Got Dragons – a creative family production featuring British Sign Language and audio captions. Monthly ‘dementiafriendly’ relaxed film screenings are also proving to be a great success. Anyone who would like to ensure that Ropetackle can survive and thrive, is urged to make a regular donation of whatever they can afford. “We are hugely grateful for what has been pledged so far,” said Martin Allen, “but we do need to keep up the momentum now. If just 4% of our annual visitors committed to a £2 a month direct debit, we would reach our target. Band manager, Barclay Thompson says: “We love the venue, the audience and the wonderfully welcoming and hard-working staff and volunteers. This venue, with its varied offering, is a vital element in what makes Shorehamby-Sea such a wonderful place to live. It is so important that community venues like these survive. We are not just happy, but proud to help its survival with this fundraiser.” If you would like to sign up to the Patrons and Friends Scheme, visit www.ropetacklecentre.co.uk/Ropetackle2020/ or call in at the Box Office to pick up a form. THE LANDLADY DUST SETTLES….

I

was on the bus going to Devils’s Dyke the other day, sitting on the front upstairs seat like a child, as I always do, when someone came to sit on the other front upstairs seat (as they always do). The woman, or girl, as I saw she was once I stole a glance, proceeded to organise her life on her telephone, as so many people do these days, not that I have a problem with that. Why waste time sitting at home organising for builders, cleaners, plumbers, or whatever, when you can do it from the comfort of the number 77? Mobile phones are the very lifeblood of multi-tasking… This young lady on the bus was, quite wisely I think, using her journey

Fortunately, I liked the new colour more than the old one and I’m tempted to call her back to address the bit she missed on the ceiling. Anyway, back to the young lady on the bus, who spent the entire journey detailing, to the last bit of burnt-on crumpet, a very longwinded itinerary of what needed to be cleaned, including approximate dimensions of every room and possible wool to acrylic ration of every rug and carpet. By the time I got off the bus, I felt like I’d cleaned the flat myself and possibly could’ve, The only disappointing thing was that I never got to know how much it cost…..

to call a cleaning company specialising in ‘End of Tenancy’ cleans. What a brilliant idea, I thought to myself, thinking back to the veritable pigsties I’ve been left with when some of my tenants have moved out of my properties. The most memorable pigsty – although I think even a pig would have turned trotter at the sight – was when our horribly eccentric tenant left the flat that Katy and I own in Warrior Square. Not only had he smashed and disconnected all the electrical sockets, citing electricity as ‘evil’, but the rubbish he’d left behind, (ironically including many defunct

a grand lunch

GB1 AT THE GRAND BRIGHTON he invitation came from a charming young friend. He had won a voucher in a raffle for a meal at Brighton’s internationally famous hotel The Grand. Well I was touched and excited to go back to this iconic business to see what their lunch menu had to offer. The Grand is posh, it’s smart and it’s perhaps perceived as being a luxury that one aspires to rather than a place to pop into for a good and very affordable lunch. Well think again. I have just been blown away by a lunch menu that included some great dishes for a bargain price of £10 for two courses and £15 for three. Yes you read that right! Let’s start at the beginning, the room is beautiful, let’s face it, the building has always been impressive, but GB1 looks good and sitting in the window looking out to sea, well it doesn’t get much better.

T

“It was good, better than good, it was tasty and light, perfect lunch time fare”

Again Mr W was thwarted at pud as the carrot cake was off, but with a little gentle coaxing I managed to persuade him to try the peanut pannacotta which came with a dark chocolate tart, shortbread crumbs, strawberry gel and sundry other bits and bobs. I loved it, bitter, sweet, creamy, a touch of salt, mixed textures and pretty as a picture too. The pannacotta was perhaps a little over firm but not disasterously so. Mr W enjoyed it but didn’t finish, far more to do with an impending rugby training session than dislike, I think it had won him over. Certainly The Grand had won us both over and I will be back for that soup very soon indeed, more than good value, it’s a real bargain. GB1 at The Grand Brighton 97-99 King's Road, Brighton East Sussex, BN1 2FW 01273 224 300 grandbrighton.co.uk

The lunch offer has four choices at each stage. My host Mr W chose the spicy chicken which he really enjoyed, it looked great and very tasty indeed. I chose the fish soup. I love fish soup and this was better than good it was stellar, a rich bisque packed with large chunks of fish and cockles, okay there was no gruyere, crouton or rouille but at these prices that is totally acceptable. It was perfection and more than generous. Sadly for Mr W the beef rib was not available but the burger alternative he declared to be good, the fried cheese sticks on the side interesting and he loved the herbed mayonnaise too. I chose the sea bream which came with a soy infused spicy kimchi that was dotted with tiny cubes of smoked duck. It was good, better than good, it was tasty and light, perfect lunch time fare.

brighton – channelled latest’s TV makers

LOOK OUT

We did fod and drink on the show from time to time but never enough. Just before Christmas last Latest Bill had a chat and suggested that I start a new series – “Go away and come up with a new format and title” he said. Well I’m good at titles so off I went and came up with the idea for my new show which is called Look Out! with Andrew Kay. The format is still chat and fun but it’s now going to be an hour long show with several guests, regular music spots and at last a load of food and drink. And right now we are making the first episode with a list of fab guests, some of whom you will know and love. In episode one I have Osaro Ogbeide, local celeb and brilliant creator of dance music. So brilliant in fact that he has written my new theme music and I love it. We will be talking about that of course but also about his inspirational new single which is already recieving acclaim globally – a real star.

“Andrew Kay launches his new show this month with the promise of lots of laughs ”

S

ome of you will have noticed an absence on your Last TV channel over the last month. It’s not that he’s not been there, there have been lots of episodes of Queersay and AK Soufflé as well as Cook It! and International Chef Exchange, but AK has been concentrating on a new show that will start to screen at 9pm every Wednesdsay. We asked him what is going on and why the change. “I’ve been making programmes for the last few years. Cook It! was great fun and has been seen across the UK. International Chef Exchange went on to Amazon Prime and was seen around the world and Queersay has been very popular, so much so that I will be starting a new series of the global LGBT+ news review show very soon. There are already nearly 200 hundred episodes online that capture the changing world gay scene. AK Soufflé has been a real joy and I have had so many amazing guests from the world of TV, theatre and music as well as prominent business people, local politicians and social commentators – and some complete loons too. All of this has added up to nearly 100 episodes of pure joy for me as presenter and producer. When I originally came up with the silly soufflé gag, cheesy and full of hot air, I hadn’t thought it through but soon realised that as I am probably best known for my work with food and drink that it could be confusing.

He will be joined in the studio by Brighton Fringe award winner and comedy songstress Hannah Brackenbury. Hannah writes brilliant comic songs, satirical ditties in the comedy tradition of greats like Victoria Wood, her hero and the core of her award winning show, Victorious. She will certainly be bringing along her guitar so we can expect lots of laughs. There will also be one of my foodie pals in the studio to create some top nosh for us to try, well seeing as I have lost the food element in the show’s name why not put some in the actual show, how perverse is that. Over the weeks I will be lining up local stars and visiting ones too to bring you an hour of entertainment every week. And look out for my exciting new titles that have been brilliantly animated by motion garaphic wizard Daryn Moore. All in all it’s very exciting so thanks for wacthing so far and stay tuned, look out for Look Out! Look Out! with Andrew Kay stars on June ? at 9pm
