SPRING AWAKENING

OVER THE YEARS LATEST’S THEATRE CORRESPONDANT ANDREW KAY HAS COME TO RECOGNISE THAT AS A CITY PRODUCING THEATRE WE PUNCH WAY ABOVE OUR WEIGHT, & THIS WEEK A NEW PRODITCION FROM APOLLO OF A CULT MUSICAL MORE THAN PROVES THIS care little for his needs and inner feelings. His is a remarkable performance in a difficult role which has such darkness. At the centre of the story is Melchior Gabor, a prodigy, intellectually precocious, vibrant and popular – but also defiantly independent and challenging of the world he has been born into. Ollie Wray is the embodiment of that character, charismatic and committed. He too is challenged and troubled but he is a leader and object of admiration and desire for those around him, a position that inevitably, given the

REVIEW

I

t’s amazing to think that this extraordinary piece of work in its original form dates back to 1891. The raw content of the drama must have been truly shocking back then – but in truth what is really shocking is its relevance today. 130 years later and the struggle of teenagers coming to terms with sex and sexuality and an oppressive morality enforced by religion and education systems is hardly any different and when it comes to dealing with teenage depression and male suicide it could not be more relevant for a modern audience.

Photography: Miles Davies

“The struggle of teenagers coming to terms with sex and sexuality and an oppressive morality enforced by religion and education systems is hardly any different today” All this in a rock based musical written by Steven Sater and Duncan Sheik and performed by Apollo Productions. Regular readers will know that I am a fan of Apollo and of director and producer Katy Markey, and she and her team seldom fail to impress. This time the company have reached a new level of maturity spurred on by this challenging cult masterpiece, and they more than do it justice. The pared back setting offers a blank canvas against which the story is told. The use of the cast as Greek chorus is effective both dramatically and musically. And when it comes to the music the delivery of every single note is immaculate, a fine band and fine ensemble singing, lifted further by extraordinary solos and duets. And the word ensemble is seldom used more appropriately than here, each and every member of this cast is totally committed to the whole. That said their are some very fine solo performances too. Max Bower and Hari Johnson movingly play the young gay characters Hansen and Ernst and their duet is tear promptingly beautiful. Jody King emerges with grace from childhood to womanhood as Wendla, her spiritual innocence wrecked as her heart and more is opened by Melchior but her real needs denied by her terrified mother. Ollie Hawes as Moritz Steifel is extraordinary, his face pained, his anguish real and his sense of disbelief as he struggles with the truths shown to him and again, deals with oppressive parents and teachers who LATEST TV | VIRGIN MEDIA 159 | FREEVIEW CHANNEL 7

strictures and the morals of the time, leads him down a dark path. Wray can sing and can dance but he can act too, the true example of a triple threat! The whole is deftly put together by Katy Markey, the driving force behind Apollo. Her skills as choreographer have never been better shown, the dance element is brutal and effective and the way she has steered the dramatic content is purposefully raw but done with great skill and sensitivity. Spring Awakening is a work that proves two things, the timeless issue of teenage angst and the power of theatre to explore such issues and this production would not be out of place on any West End stage. 4 September, The Spire Andrew Kay 5 stars 12

THE LANDLADY

OLD PHONEY… fter all my talk of multi-tasking on the telephone last week, I have finally decided to upgrade my phone after 8 years of service. For the past 4 years, friends and my offspring have laughed like drains when they see my mobile, as it is falling apart and almost pre-dates the Arc. For the past 4 years, I have been buying the same model of phone whenever I see it and replacing the buttons, backs, batteries, screens that eventually fail with bits from the new ones, thus creating a weird mutant hybrid. It seems that the phone is no longer available, thus cutting off my supply of spares. Furthermore, whenever anyone calls me, they sound like a Dalek and I can no longer cut off a call without the air of a pen-nib or pencil-tip, thus making the task of slamming the phone down during an argument virtually impossible.

my Kindle. Having read back the last sentence, I tend to agree that I need to upgrade my technology. As well as upgrading my phone, I have also decided to finally get some driving lessons and take my driving test. This is even more urgent than the telephone debacle, as The Cuban and I are setting up a business, driving tourists around Cuba and, without doing any advertising at all, have some clients who wish to travel with us in February next year. The Cuban is a very competent driver but unfortunately is an even more competent complainer about driving. Moreover, he insists upon embarking upon a journey at 6am, much to the distaste of those travelling with him, who are supposed to be on holiday. At least I’ll be able to set my alarm on the new phone…..Hopefully for 9am.

I have decided which model of phone I would like and will be suffering the dreadful experience of ‘town’ in order to purchase it some time this week. It’s just as well, as on Thursday, I will be meeting one of my friends, who normally lives in Dubai, in a country hotel in Derbyshire, as we both originate from near there and have to suffer separate visits with various relatives nearby on Friday. This particular friend, although relatively new, is one of the main critics of my penchant for antique phones and thinks it’s insane that she has to message me via Skype on

a real snap

THE RED SNAPPER WITH A REAL SNAP righton & Hove, city of cocktails, a name that over the past ten years has been justifiably earned by the bar keeps and bars that have gone from strength to strength here. On my travels around Europe and beyond I have been lucky enough to sip mixed drinks in some of the best bars on offer but one thing has always been true. Mention that you are from Brighton and the bar person’s eyes will invariably light up. Brighton’s reputation as cocktail capital of the UK, if not beyond, has gone global. Growing up in the sixties, cocktails were the things of fantasy, of spy movies and TV heroes like Simon Templar. Weirdly many families would have a cocktail cabinet complete with fancy glasses and cocktail sticks, my grandparents even had those dainty paper cocktaill umbrellas. The one thing those cocktail cabinets lacked for the most part was booze, cocktails were aspirational, not a reality.

B

their business goes from strength to strength. For those who know me, my tipple of choice is gin and a few months ago I wrote about how the current trend for all things gin had spawned some gems and some gremlins. I was particularly taken with a gin from Adnam’s Southwould distillery that was flavoured with sea buckthorn. It worked for me so when I was presented with their new limited edition gin I was hot to taste it. I say hot because the new infusion boasts habanero chilli and lime. Now this could be terribly terribly wrong, I mean how much chilli can you add to gin before it stops tasting like gin and simply becomes hot booze. I need not have worried, once again they have blown me away. I tried it neat first, as once should always do, and it was delicious, a delicate heat and gently smokiness, a bitter flavour of lime zest but neither at the cost of the real sense of juniper. Next I tried it with tonic, not as interesting and rather a waste of good gin I thought. On then to a martini, stirred and decorated with a pickled chilli, a sort of dirty martini and delicious. Finally on to one of my favourites, the red snapper. I’m no fan of vodka so the gin version of the bloody Mary suits me fine and made with this gin it was hotting just the right notes, and this because I am no fan of the over spiced “Mary”, so hot that no other flavours sing out. I was out of my favourite clam flavoured Clamato, but believe me, it’s on the shopping list right now. mixologygroup.co.uk Habanero & Lime Gin is available at adnams.co.uk from £29.99

“ I am no fan of the over spiced “Mary”, so hot that no other flavours sing out” In the seventies I was lured into a Covent Garden bar called Rumours, there we would drink long wet, sweet and fruity concoctions like Long Island Iced Tea and Pinacolada – yuck – but the fashion of the moment. They were enough to put you off cocktails for ever. But I am made of stronger stuf and around ten years ago I was approached by Miles Cunliffe with the offer of bringing his mobile bar to my home and hosting a tasting party. It was wonderful, eye opening and fun. Miles and his wife Zoe went on to create The Mixology Group and to a great extent their training school has been the driving force behind the global awareness of the city’s cocktail scene. Offering training for bar staff and private individuals simply interested in mixing great drinks at home,
