GIG BUDDIES GIG BUDDIES FOR GOOD MENTAL HEALTH ARE LOOKING FOR VOLUNTEERS- CAN YOU HELP?
G
ig Buddies for Good Mental Health (or GBMH) matches adults experiencing Mental Health challenges with a volunteer who has similar interests, to go to events together that they both love. The project is run by Synergy Creative Community CIC, and is in partnership with local charity Stay Up Late. We match each participant to a volunteer, and pairs are matched according to common interests and musical tastes. Gig buddy pairs then meet, plan what they’ll do together, and get together for a minimum of once a month to go to a gig, concert, club night, art gallery, or other cultural event.
“Matching adults experiencing mental health challenges with a volunteer with similar interests ”
PLEASE GET IN TOUCH! If you would like to become a gig buddy volunteer or participant, or refer someone you think would benefit, please get in touch using the details below. info@gigbuddiesmentalhealth.org.uk GBMH, Synergy Creative Community c/o Community Base, 113 Queens Road, Brighton, BN1 3XG Phone: Jo on - 07877 574212 Find out more, like, share or follow us here! gigbuddiesformentalhealth.org.uk Facebook: @GigBuddiesMH Twitter: @GigBuddiesMH Instagram: GigBuddiesMH
The project aims to make volunteering easier for people in and around Brighton & Hove, by enabling volunteers to go to gigs they’d be going to anyway, but whilst accompanying someone with Mental Health needs. No particular experience or skills are required, other than being friendly with a good sense of humour! Training and support is provided, and all volunteers are police checked to ensure we are all thinking about the safety of the people we support. The GBMH project will also recruit volunteers who have themselves overcome mental health challenges in the past, as we believe individuals with lived experience of Mental Health issues are hugely equipped to help and support others to do the same.

THE LANDLADY
COUNTRYVILE… 've had a rather international week this week, one way or another. It began with The Cuban Boyfriend returning to Norway after spending the lovely, boiling hot, bank holiday weekend in Brighton. We visited various coastal locations, including Lymington, Cuckmere Haven and the Birling Gap, all of which were bursting with selfie-snapping tourists, no doubt filling their boots before we're set adrift into Brexit land. I then boarded a train to the Peak District to spend a night in a country house hotel with a friend of mine from Dubai, who was over visiting her mother and needed to get away for a night. I have to say, her mother sounds very much as if she is cut from the same cloth as my own, late mother (a rough, uncomfortable tweed hewn in the style of a Joan of Arc tunic) who was not renowned for her tact and empathy. Her views

bus station, which rapidly replaced Stoke (where I grew up) in my poll of Number 1 Arse Hole of the universe. Thanking God for my conversational repertoire borne of a misspent youth, I passed the time chatting to a bus driver over the virtues of an old punk band called Discharge, who were around in the late 70s. I winced, as misty-eyed, the bus driver reminisced that these were the best years of his life… Looking around me at the very dicey-looking clientele in the bus station, I hazarded a guess that these were among the worst. On the way back from Stoke, I had a drink in Euston with my friend Crazy Nick from Havana, then 12 hours later boarded a flight to Oslo to see The Cuban. Might as well make the most of it before Brexit, where I might be doomed to spending my weekends in Stockport…
towards foreigners would've made Farage look like Nelson Mandela. I can very much see why my friend needed a night away. We stuffed our faces with quality local produce and, while out trying to run it off the following morning, I was reminded of the misty drizzle (or mizzle) plus the all-permeating smell of cow shit that you only get North of Watford, thank God. Later, en route to Stoke on Trent, where I would spend a night with old friends, I had the misfortune to have to spend 15 minutes in Stockport

SHOWING THE CITY AT ITS BEST WITH CHILLI PICKLE hen friends who have moved abroad come to visit there is always a desire to show them what’s best on the city’s dining scene. But what do they miss most. After years of doing this it has to be Indian food, not a roast or fish and chips but Indian. I have to confess that outside of the UK, and of course India, I have never found good Indian food. Mr & Mrs T were here for only four days from their new home in Brisbane and true to form they wanted Indian. It was mid evening on a Sunday but we
Mr T was persuaded by me to order the tandoori lamb cutlets. I will often choose this as they are so perfectly cooked and come in a plentiful portion. He ordered rice on the side and another of my favourite dishes, the aubergine crush which is wonderfully moreish. Judging by the wide grin on his face he was more than happy. I chose one of their newer dishes, an Indian take on surf and turf. I’m not sure why really, surf and turf is an odd concept and is often rather disappointingly dull. Not this time, I’ll start from the base up. So as a foundation the platter is covered in a delicious coriander jeera naan, sweet and toasty with those lovely smokey blisters that are only achievable in a proper tandoor. To the side a small portion of smoked aubergine, a sweet chutney and kachumber riatta. All good, all in fact enough to call a meal alone. But then to crown it all there is a Nawab lamb chop, perfect crisp fat and tender eye of meat, a chicken seekh, minced and delicately herby meat in a huge sausage, red chicken tikka – a large chunk of succulent breast meat and finally the surf - two king prawns cooked perfectly in the tandoor and dressed in a fierce chilli sauce. Having started with a simple selection or poppodoms and pickles I was relieved to have skipped starters on this occasion, this was an absolute feast and certainly mnore than enough for one, even a greedy one. We drank a bottle of Sicilian white which was a perfect crisp and fragrant accompaniment to our spicy dinner and once again Chilli Pickle proved to visting friends that it really is a jewel in the crown of our city. 17 Jubilee St, Brighton BN1 1GE thechillipickle.com 01273 900383
W
“ Chilli Pickle proved to visting friends that it really is a jewel in the crown of our city” were lucky enough to get a table at a city favourite, Chilli Pickle. From the very start in their tiny Lanes premises to Jubilee Square, the brilliant team of Alan and Dawn Sperring and their brilliant brigade of chefs and front of house staff have been wowing customers with their vibrant menu of regional Indian cuisine. It’s a place I like rather too much and I will sneak in on my own to indulge in a spicy pre-theatre feast or clandestine lunch, so it was an obvious choice for showing off the city’s best. The ubiquitous Mr L joined us and true to form ordered his favourite dish, the chicken biriani. Mrs T followed suit and was suitably impressed, loving the side dish of creamy pink sauce that comes as part of the deal along with a sweet chilli chutney and riatta.

“Nothing can replace the dressing room banter that’s so much part of life as a player. That’s what I want viewers to enjoy when they tune into Mullery Meets ”
F
ormer Brighton manager Alan Mullery will be starring on Latest TV here in Brighton this July. The former Brighton manager will be hosting his own football chat show, Mullery Meets. “I had a wonderful career in football, playing for Spurs and Fulham,” Alan says. “I also won 35 caps for England. Going to the 1970 World Cup Finals in Mexico with players like Bobby Charlton, Gordon Banks and Bobby Moore is something I still treasure. Later I was lucky enough to go straight into managing Brighton when my playing days were over. That was a magical time for me, but nothing can replace the dressing room banter that’s so much part of life as a player. That’s what I want viewers to enjoy when they tune into Mullery Meets.” The new pilot show for this original TV series can be seen on Latest TV every Tuesday evening in July at 7pm and 1am, and also on Thursday mornings at 7.30am. Alan is joined by two of the star players he managed at the Goldstone, Andy Rollings and Gary Chivers, who are both now members of the matchday hospitality team at Brighton’s Amex Stadium. “Andy and Gary were great guests,” smiles Alan. “The feeling when we recorded the show was relaxed and happy with plenty of laughter and that’s exactly what we wanted. Football fans see their favourite players out on the pitch, but they’re never in on the banter you get in every dressing room. That’s what we’ll be sharing with Mullery Meets. I’m very pleased with the pilot show and looking forward to seeing what response we get when the show goes out on Latest TV.” MULLERY MEETS… 2 Latest TV always welcomes feedback from viewers in the Brighton area. Fans can also email Alan direct at his official website www.alanmullery.co.uk Alan has worked closely on the project with his friend and creative partner Tony Norman.
