A WEEKEND
IN VENICE
A
Weekend in Venice was inspired by actual events. I wanted to bring it to life on screen, because it was the most funny and excruciatingly embarrassing incident that has ever happened to me (or rather my husband). But I quickly found when writing it, that I was going to have to create more extreme characters than our somewhat ordinary selves; so it evolved into a rather different story. It took 9 months to write and plan – largely on my daily commute to London - and with a mixture of local and London-based talent, we shot it over six very long days. From the Hotel du Vin, to the Prince Albert pub
“we had the only seagull in Brighton that didn’t eat chips”
and we all felt like we were on a curiously exotic holiday together. The tagline is “A tale of romance and misadventure” and that’s what I wanted to capture. It incorporates humour, reality and fantasy and the characters had to have charm – if you don’t like our central couple, you just won’t care what happens. And visually it had to be intriguing and spectacular enough to carry the audience through the fantasy to the conclusion. There’s a significant twist and I wanted to make sure there were enough dramatic and visual clues throughout to set it up, without giving the game away! But if there is one thing the audience should take away, it’s that you should always exercise caution on holiday… The idea grew with a momentum of its own and my Producer and I realised it would take 6 days to shoot with a cast and crew of around 50. That’s a big ask for people to work for nothing. Technically, it had also expanded way beyond what I could fund, so a friend suggested we advertise for an Exec Producer in the Sunday Times. Incredibly, we raised £20K. This still meant everybody was unpaid but we could cover expenses, feed everyone and hire all the camera equipment needed which included a crane for the opening shot, a trained seagull and various parking tickets. A Weekend in Venice Thursday 9pm, 26th September Latest TV
and the Palace Pier, so many locals bent over backwards to help. Not so great were the members of the public on Ship Street who heckled us as we tried to get our crane shot (they thought it disgraceful that we had been allowed to block off the road!), the various parking tickets and the seagull fiasco: We paid £350 for a trained seagull to eat some chips. Oh the irony! It turns out paid seagulls don’t feel the need to scavenge, so in spite of the fee, we had the only seagull in Brighton that didn’t actually want to eat them. But despite it being February, the sun shone for us

THE GRAYS
MODERN HOMES FOR A BETTER FUTURE IN NEWHAVEN hen Cayuga Developments won the bid to buy the former Grays School in Newhaven they knew they could create something truly unique on the South Coast. House prices in Newhaven are currently lower than a lot of the surrounding area and the site has been a fantastic opportunity to build truly modern, affordable housing for those priced out of Brighton, Hove and other towns such as Lewes, without compromising on style or quality. Newhaven is growing and looking to the future. The recently announced £38m redevelopment of the town centre, with a new hotel, retail space, leisure centre extension and office accommodation will undoubtedly transform the town. Much like Portslade before it, there is no doubt Newhaven prices will be increasing. After all, the town already has great transport links by car, bus and train to Brighton, Lewes and even London (not too mention Dieppe!).
W
“Truly modern, well finished, well built, well specified houses ” Cayuga wanted to build something new and modern so made contact with award winning Danish architects CF Moller - who had just had a recent design shortlisted in The Sunday Times Home of the Year competition. This design became the basis for the houses at The Grays, adjusted to incorporate 3 and 4 bed houses, but all with the same open plan living, balconies or terraces and that modern feel. Ed Deedman of Cayuga Homes commented: “We just would never get the opportunity to build something like this in Brighton. You have to get a lot on a small space due to land prices – and that means flats or very expensive houses. In Newhaven we can deliver modern, 2 storey houses with a garden and garage from £350,000 – unheard of in Brighton or Hove”. In fact Cayuga went further. Not only do most houses have a garage, but there are electric car charging points too, and solar panels on every house. Each house has at least one balcony, some two. With the elevated location, a number of the houses have sea views or great views over The South Downs. Inside, the houses are incredibly well specified with hardwood floors, solid worktops in the kitchens and Zanussi appliances. The houses are finished in light, neutral tones with terrific high ceilings in the bedrooms and buyers have a choice of carpet colours. Ed Deedman; “We really have tried to go the extra mile. Truly modern, well finished, well built, well specified houses - I think the photos speak for themselves. And all for the price of a two bedroom flat in Hove. With prices in Newhaven sure to rise over the next few years these will be a great buy for those wanting to get a house who thought they couldn’t afford one. In fact, with the Government ‘Help-To-Buy’ scheme, it only takes a 5% deposit”. Houses are for sale through Estate agents, Rowland Gorringe 01273 474101, and Phillip Mann 01273 517517. There is an open weekend to view the Show-home on 28th and 29th September between 10am – 4pm. No appointment necessary. The Grays, Western Road, Newhaven. BN9 9JS.

THE LANDLADY
PIPE DREAMS… t has been a long time since I renovated a property. More than 15 years, in fact. If back in the mists of time in the late ‘90s, you were to ask my (now very ex-husband) what he thought of me, the adjective at the top of his list (apart from words which cannot be repeated in this publication) would most definitely have been ‘boring’. Back in the late 90s and right up until 2005, I was indeed a property bore. I would, oblivious to more ‘interesting and inclusive’ things that were going on, prattle on about copper pipe lengths, room-sizing calculations for central heating systems and the strategic location of soil stacks. I would wander around Brighton haggard and hung-over, clothed in filthy blue overalls with ‘The Baby’ strapped to my back. ‘The Baby’, now 18 years old would probably be willingly strapped to my back
I
When he inherited his (still living and likely to outlive us all) 95 year old grandmother’s flat in Old Havana last year, it never occurred to me that he might morph from a cool, fun, young person into a crabby old man who lurches around DIY stores comparing shower-heads and push-fit couplings. Even in Norway, where he lives and I go for supposed holidays, we are not safe from the DIY stores and we travel for miles and miles on very expensive buses to procrastinate over the merits of Reverse Osmosis Purifiers. Even on a trip to Ikea in Oslo, I was torn away from my meatballs and cream slice to mull over the Pros and Cons of two unpronounceable shower units on sale in ‘Bargain Corner’ (also unpronounceable in the local language). Sometimes, I wish I’d never mentioned that I’d trained as a plumber…..
“I would wander around Brighton haggard and hungover, clothed in filthy blue overalls with ‘The Baby’ strapped to my back” now, as it would enable her to travel the world without paying, but back in the olden days when she had no choice, she would quite often vomit down my neck. I don’t blame her, as she too was probably bored sick of my property ruminations. These memories have been brought back into sharp focus by the recent transformation of The Cuban Boyfriend into a Property Bore.

one planet plate
WE ALL LOVE CHOICE BUT ARE WE MAKING GOOD CHOICES? t’s wonderful to think that in our own ways we are doing our best to secure a better future for our planet amd I know that at home I do my best to reduce food waste, recycle and cut plastics as much as I can, I’m no saint but I am far better now than ever before. But do we put the same thought into the way we eat when we dine out? I’m certain that I am never as conscious of this as I could be and this was certainly driven home at a recent lunch I attended at Lucky Beach Cafe.
Most impressively I was not being lectured. You may have heard the joke: “How can you tell when someone is a vegan? THEY’LL TELL YOU!!!”. Well not on this occasion, even the vegans and vegetarians at the table were being calm and polite to those omnivores amongst us. Andrew Stephen, Chief Executive of the Sustainable Restaurant Association, says: “Our single biggest impact on the environment is caused by the food we eat. That means there’s the potential for a very tasty solution. All our research tells us that consumers are crying out for some simple signposting to help them make menu choices that are good in every way. One Planet Plate gives chefs the chance to draw attention to one damned delicious dish that epitomises their ethos, and choosing it is a vote for the food future we want to see. It’s brilliant to see Brighton restaurants leading as well as feeding.” Here in Brighton & Hove we like to think that we are pretty green and many of us are doing our best. And from the list of local restaurants below you will see that this concept has been taken up by a good range of eateries already. I will certainly be looking out for these dishes from now on when I dine out. Diners can find restaurants serving a One Planet Plate on a dynamic map at www.oneplanetplate.org. The site also serves as a treasure trove of more than 200 recipes for the dishes created and contributed by chefs from high end to high street. Brighton area participating restaurants: Purezza, Happy Maki, Curry Leaf Cafe, Lucky Beach Cafe, Moshimo, Metrodeco, Market, Cleveland Arms, University of Sussex, Leon, The Crown Hastings, The Salt Room, Carluccios, Zizzi, Wahaca
I
“It’s brilliant to see Brighton restaurants leading as well as feeding” One Planet Plate, a global campaign run by the Sustainable Restaurant Association (SRA), enables diners to vote with their fork for a better food future by dining at participating restaurants and choosing these ‘sustainable specials’. It’s an impressive concept and a very worthy one too, but would the dishes on offer match up to that ideal? Well I’m very happy to say that for the most part they really do, any misgivings were purely my personal taste and I loved a burger made from something tasty that was not meat. We were served a range of dishes to sample and they were impressive, attractive and very tasty and I certainly left the table satisfied, not only by the food served but also by the ideal and certainly by the hearty discussions that surounded every dish.

MISCHIEF THEATRE FLIES IN WITH ITS OTHER COMEDY DISASTER uch as we all love to sit in the theatre and experience high production values, astonishing performances and that spellbinding magic of great theatre, there is little doubt that we also love it when things go wrong, from wobbly sets, mistimed entrances, missing props and forgotten lines, even in the most serious of dram it can bring a smile

“ A highly physical comedy packed with finely tuned farce” to your face. So when Mischief Theatre conceived their wickedly irreverent format of plays that intentionally go wrong they hit up on a rich vein of humour. and what’s not to love. Surely by now you are imagining how a bunch of blundering actors swinging around the stage on wires as they attempt to fly will reduce you to tears of laughter. Well brace yourselves for a full on side-splitting evening of silly disasters. The touring cast presents: Romayne Andrews (Dennis), Tom Babbage (Max), Georgia Bradley (Lucy), Connor Crawford (Chris), Katy Daghorn (Sandra), Phoebe Ellabani (Annie), Ciaran Kellgren (Jonathan), Ethan Moorhouse (Trevor), Oliver Senton (Robert), and Patrick Warner (Francis), with understudies Eboni Dixon, Christian James, Soroosh Lavasani and Ava Pickett. Co-written by Mischief Theatre company members Henry Lewis, Jonathan Sayer and Henry Shields, Peter Pan Goes Wrong is a highly physical comedy packed with finely tuned farce and Buster Keaton inspired slapstick, delivered with split second timing and ambitious daring. The play sees the ‘Cornley Polytechnic Drama Society’ back on stage battling technical hitches, flying mishaps and cast disputes as they attempt to present J.M Barrie’s much loved tale. But will they ever make it to Neverland? Nominated for an Olivier Award for ‘Best New Comedy’ in 2016, Peter Pan Goes Wrong has enjoyed two West End seasons, a tour of Australia and New Zealand and a UK tour. A one hour version of the show was broadcast on primetime BBC One in December 2016, starring David Suchet as the guest narrator and watched by an audience of over six million worldwide. Peter Pan Goes Wrong is directed by Adam Meggido, with set designs by Simon Scullion, costumes by Roberto Surace, lighting by Matt Haskins, sound by Ella Wahlstrom, co-composed by Richard Baker and Rob Falconer, Associate Director Fred Gray. GOING SOLO
Working alongside the British Airways i360, Shaun produced a short video for Brighton's seafront attraction...a video that would also be the prototype for Going Solo. But, with transportation & accommodation and general travel advice being integral to The Travel Tab brand, he also wanted to make sure these principles were carried into the creation of Travel Tab TV, and ultimately, Going Solo. “The last thing I wanted to do was create something that was all about ME”... Which is why interviewing locals abroad
G
OING SOLO is a six-part series following Brighton-born film-maker Shaun Troke sharing the highs & lows of solo travel while visiting Greece, Switzerland, Austria, Romania, and Germany. For Shaun - whose credits include an award-winning feature-film ('untitled', 2011) & hosting the chat show 'Shaun's People' (broadcast on Latest TV in 2016) – his new project has been a two-year journey... An idea born in Summer 2017, and launched online in February 2018, THE TRAVEL TAB was Shaun's new project: A website featuring written content by himself & Guest Writers. But, in the background, video ideas were on the cards. And, in August 2018, GOING SOLO began development.
“Solo travel is a niche subject, which meant having to make the series entertaining to those with no interest in solo travel ” “In the beginning, I had a title and a theme. I also knew that to make this series, I still needed to travel light, yet make sure I had the tools to make the series”. The tools - including cameras and microphones and other filming equipment - would be squeezed into a little carry-bag, meaning experimentation with new methods of filming... And, where better to test these methods?
would be essential. Not only would this help give insights into budgeting/sightseeing/eating, it would also help give Going Solo a nudge towards being a standard travel show... “Solo travel is a niche subject, which meant having to make the series entertaining to those with no interest in solo travel”. Filmed over a period of five weeks, the production – like solo travel itself – had its ups & downs. But, like any documentary, it all came together in the edit. “Officially, Going Solo has been two years in the making. Unofficially, it's taken twenty! I was 21 the first time I travelled solo, which was also when I decided to pursue my childhood ambition to make films. So, everything I've done & experienced since then has somehow funnelled its way into what Going Solo has become”. thetraveltab.co.uk
