brighton – channelled latest’s TV makers

YOUR CLUB HISTORY: WHITEHAWK FC Y

ourLeagueTV is a non-league football channel created in October 2018 as a result of a meeting of old friends Simon ‘Odds n Evens’ Stevens, James Ohene-Djan & Greg Fay (Winkball Reporter Network). The People’s Channel focuses on the people, characters, volunteers and communities that make semi-professional football what it is and promotes what’s distinctive about grassroots football. YourLeagueTV is also a platform for non-league football vloggers and filmmakers. The channel features over 18 hours of football-related content covering a diverse range of topics, giving exposure to people who make up the game behind the scenes including films from Non-League America, Beautiful Game 15, Hopper & Son as well as interviews by protege and mental health ambassador Jake Foghorn Murphy. Odds n Evens’ unique delivery style encompasses his enthusiasm for the game and passion for meeting people, he gets the stories that other presenters miss in an attempt to provide an original carousel of content for the YourLeagueTV audience. Odds n Evens was brought up on the Whitehawk Estate. A proud Hawkan, who played for The Hawks as a teenager and for the 3rd team but found the joys of the clubhouse bar and nightlife of Brighton too much of a temptation. He moved to London in late 1989 to work as tour manager for Primal Scream whom he met in 1988 at the Zap club during the Summer Of Love. After touring the world with the band, he set up his own music agency ‘Beats Working’ who's roster included the Chemical Brothers and Mo Wax label. The late nights took their toll and in 2004, after a stint in property management he decided to retrain as a youth worker, he has been working with young homeless people and refugees for the last 12 years. His interest in non-league football was ignited when, on Saturday 2nd May 2015 he said to Mrs Odds n Evens “I’m off to Basingstoke, I’ll be back around 7...” the Hawks won 1-0 What amazed him was the atmosphere and friendliness of the Hawks support, the amusing songs and Superman with his BELIEVE banner. The fact that the supporters changed ends at half time was a revelation which appealed to his inquisitive nature. He went to the next game v Borehamwood a week later where the atmosphere was even better and he bumped into some old mates from the Estate. This ignited his interest in not only his childhood team but nonleague football people as a concept. Future plans to make more short films and documentaries are in place with some exciting projects in the offing covering the grassroots movement across the U.K. and continuing to watch his beloved Hawks. YourLeagueTV are partners in The Hawks In The Community project with the Crew Club & VYD CIC’ Your Club History: Whitehawk FC New programme starting Thursday, 17th October at 18:30.

LULLABY Singer/songwriter Kate Daisy Grant launches her new album Lullaby Words and photos by Diana Frangi

n what promises to be one of the most enjoyable musical events of the year, Brighton-based Kate Daisy Grant will be officially launching her

“An innovative exploration of lullabies from all over the world” new album, ‘Lullaby’, at The Old Market on November 7th. With her will be multi-instrumentalist virtuoso Nick Pynn - who for several years has won the award for the best show in the Brighton Fringe Festival. Kate received her own ‘Spirit of the Fringe’ award in Edinburgh 2012 and together, Nick and Kate won a joint ‘Herald Angel Award’ from the Glasgow Herald. Kate’s Lullaby is an innovative exploration of lullabies from all over the world. During her research she was struck by the similarities of the melodies, and how they could even be sung as harmonies to each other, overlapping and weaving together. With Nick at the helm of the recording process, mixing the many vocal parts into 'surround sound',

together with dream-like layers Nick Pynn of piano and strings, the listener feels cocooned by lullabies. In the live launch of Lullaby, the listener will be able to lie down and be surrounded by layers of lullabies, experiencing beautiful images from womb to cosmos as they form audio-responsive, layered projections around the space. The audience will be taken on a journey moving through fractal images of nature in all its seasons, day and night, from microcosm to macrocosm. A unique experience created with the addition of projection mapping by artist Peter Eyres. THE LANDLADY

FARWELL OLD FIEND… have to say that I was not in the slightest bit surprised at the recent demise of Thomas Cook, who operated exactly the same business model that I, as a somewhat rapacious consumer absolutely loathe. Nowadays and for the past decade, I've taken at least one, if not two flights per month and have actively avoided taking any bearing the Thomas Cook logo. Why? Well, amongst my list of reasons, is the simp!e fact that they only allow 6 kgs of hand luggage. I am a very light traveller, which is a skill I've acquired more from experience than anything else. If I really put my mind to it, I can easily spend a fortnight abroad with 6 kilos of luggage, but I'd rather not spend the evening before flying in the process of weighing my bikinis, just to make sure I'm below the limit. Even when I have a free bag in the hold, on an Emirates flight, for

future employment with better airlines, of which there are many, the great orange one being one of my personal favourites. It's just as well that there's one less airline, because it you listen to various doom mongers who insist upon droning on endlessly about brexit, we soon won't be able to go anywhere anyway. Fearing that I might miss out on my early November holiday to somewhere far-flung enough to avoid brexit, I have managed to manipulate my working hours to make sure I can leave the country way before we leave the EU and return long after we've left. If we leave. Whatever the outcome, I'm rather hoping they won't let me back in…

example, I never use it. Once, back in the mists of time, I was returning from Turkey on a Thomas Cook flight, when at check in, the employees claimed my bag was over the limit by 1kg and that I'd have to pay £50 to put it in the hold. Instead, I put on another outfit over my existing clothes, lost the kilo and spent the £50 on duty free gin, vowing to never fly Thomas Cook again. And I didn't. I do of course have a great deal of sympathy for their employees who, are also victims of poor management and hope they find

WHEN TRAVELLING AND HUNGRY WHO DO WE TRUST? n Brighton we are a fiercely independent breed. We love our home grown businesses whether it be estate agencies or food businesses. But local and eat local is for many of us a creed and for the most part a good way to go. Take out and putting back into the local economy. It works. But there are times when you are away from home and you need to eat. You’re in a strange town, for whatever reason, and you want to eat. Of course you could go online and have a quick search around for local reviews, but that depends on how much you trust them. Can you really believe what you read online? Maybe! Or you could opt for something familiar, a chain. Yes, a chain restaurant, well come on they can’t all be less than one might hope for surely. For years and years when travelling around I would rely on the

Latest TV. I met the man a few times and his passion was intense and fun, I even had the pleasure of cooking with him on the food festival’s stage, a great memory indeed. So that night I was going to the theatre with Dr W, and we planned to eat first. In we went to our local Carluccio’s and had a delicious supper of crab and langoustine pasta, a mixed salad and a very funny mushroom inspired dessert, not of course made of mushrooms but made to look like them in celebration of the season. It was all very good indeed and, using their app we found ourselves entitled to a free, yes FREE!, bottle of wine. Back then to a raw Northerner it was exotic and unfamiliar. Today I will happily pop in for an American Hot with extra capers, my personal foible. These days I treat Carluccio’s in much the same way, a reliable friend that seldom fails to deliver. Now I know that my Italian colleagues and friends will probably dispute that their food is authentic, but whether it is on not it is reliable, inexpensive and served with grace and charm. I am yet to encounter poor service in this chain. I was reminded of this a few days ago when a memory popped up on social media of me chatting to the great Antonio Carluccio’s himself for
