ROCK AGAINST APATHY

THE LEGENDARY SHARKHUNT ARE ROCKING THE LATEST MUSIC BAR IN SUPPORT OF THE CLOCKTOWER SANCTUARY’S STRUGGLE TO HELP YOUNG HOMELESS PEOPLE IN BRIGHTON whole lot of things, but as John Lydon says ‘anger is an energy’. That’s why you’ll hear a lot of Clash and Sex Pistols songs when you come to our gig. We believe that channelling rage into a positive event where people can dance, shout along with the choruses and generally let it all out is the best way to show our defiance”.

Five local men are picking up their guitars and drumsticks to join the battle against street homelessness being fought by Brighton’s Clocktower Sanctuary. The Clocktower Sanctuary is the only day-centre in Brighton & Hove for 16 to 25-year olds who are homeless or insecurely housed. They provide vital practical and emotional support to help vulnerable young people move from crisis to independence.

TRAIN LONG-SUFFERING Sharkhunt got together over twenty years ago on the 7.08 from Victoria to Brighton. They’ve been playing at parties and small venues for years but it was the tragic death of lead guitarist Tim Lowe that propelled them into their new role as angry, punk-rocking social campaigners. GOOD FROM BAD Guitarist Ian says, “Tim, our much-loved, brilliant and supremely unreliable lead guitarist led a life bedevilled by mental health and addiction issues. When he died, he was being looked after by a small, local, housing charity that we thought had helped see him through the worst – it seemed like the right thing to do to have a memorial gig and raise some money for them. It just snowballed from there.” You can see Sharkhunt playing songs by everyone from Johnny Thunders to Bowie, from the Velvet Underground to the Only Ones and some stirring glam and punk anthems at Latest Music Bar in Manchester Street on Saturday the 9th of November from 8pm. It’s FREE to get in but Johnny warns ‘We’ll be shaking you down for ALL of your loose change and more. Young, homeless people in Brighton need that cash and we mean to take it off you.”

INDIFFERENCE Johnny Spooner, lead singer with Sharkhunt says “We’re really angry about the state of the nation and the music we play is a positive way of expressing that anger. Look at the sheer number of young people living on and begging in the streets of this town and it’s easy to be dismissive and walk on by. If our band can wake people up to the issue and get beyond their indifference – seeing through to the heart-breaking stories that drive young people onto our streets, then we will have done a useful job..”

YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED…

ANGER IS AN ENERGY Band Leader, bassist and vocalist Dave Cuff says, “Johnny’s right, we are really angry. Angry about the people in power, the state of the nation, angry about the climate crisis, angry about global politics, angry about a LATEST TV | VIRGIN MEDIA 159 | FREEVIEW CHANNEL 7

A WIZARD OF A SHOW PANTO RETURNS FOR ITS 7TH YEAR! ith Christmas only round the corner, theatres and companies are gearing up to present some first class shows. Back for the seventh year, Brighton Panto producer James Weisz returns to the Attenborough Centre for the Creative Arts with a show full of community spirit and joy. Since 2013, James Weisz has been producing a pantomime in the area, bringing it back after Theatre Royal stopped in 2011. A trademark winning combination of a small professional cast with a young ensemble of dancers, each Christmas panto has been well received, and The Wizard of Oz will be no different. Starring Charlotte Melissa Tyler as Glinda, Pip Henderson as Lion, Danielle Johnson as The Wicked Witch of The West, Carly Day as Dorothy, Hugo Catton as Tin Man and Josh Beaney-Ford as Scarecrow. The Wizard of Oz is a classic tale made Aladdin famous by the MGM movie starring Judy Garland; this production features all the Pinocchio recognisable characters of the original. Dorothy gets transported to the wonderful world of Oz, where she learns that the only way to get back home is to visit the great and powerful Wizard. On her journey to the Emerald City, she meets a Scarecrow who is in need of a brain, a Tin Man who is in need of a heart and a Lion who definitely needs some courage. Director, James says ‘We can’t wait to bring our seventh panto to Brighton, my wonderful hometown. The cast, creatives and the fabulous dancers are all ready to bring a spectacular show! We hope you can join us’

wild about boar

F

Roast loin came next on huge sharing platters with roast celeriac, sweetcorn and lavish shavings of British black truffle, extravagantly generous and utterly delicious. At this point I hasten to add that I did not drink, it would have wasted space for the delicious food! Next to arrive, in delicate china cups and saucers a smoky wild boar tea. It hit just the right spot, soothing, cleansing almost and certainy suggesting that one might have room for dessert. And what a dessert, a honey and bramley apple tart served with blackberry cream and delicate matchsticks of crisp fresh apple. I was entranced, I was also full to busting, but oh so happy. Then to top it all off Michael sent out boar bacon belly fudge – what can I say? Gilly is a marvelous writer, campaigner for better food and a great host too. To find out more about forthcoming food events go to her website: deliciousmagazine.co.uk And follow The Syndicate Kicthen on Facebook

orgive me but I am about to boar you, yes boar, and not bore. I have over the years rather shied away from reporting on one off pop-ups. Mainly because by the time I have reported the pop-up has popped-off. But I put those misgivings aside when invited to be driven into the heart of the Sussex countryside to be indulged in a feast of wild boar cooked by a talented young chef. My good friend Gilly Smith, editor of Delicious magazine, lives in a remarkable home in the depths of the countryside and had arranged for the very talented Michael NotmanWatt of The Syndicate Kitchen to come along and create a meal. Michael happily obliged and sourced a wild boar. That in itself is something of a feat, but what he then did with it was quite extraordinary. Michael is a real nose to tail kind of chef so little goes to waste and

“To top it all off boar bacon belly fudge – what can I say?” our delicious sweetcorn iced tea on arrival was testemant to that. It was a lovely day so we started in the garden where we could see our lunch being prepared over burning wood and pretty soon the boar bore down on us in oh so many ways. Boar and XO spring rolls came first and it could not have been a better start, crisp pastry, succulent piggy and vibrant sauce – and lots of them too. Next slices of boar belly with a berry ketchup. Well put it like this, you won’t want pork belly after tasting this, my word it was good. A spot of drizzle sent us inside but at just the right moment to enjoy the fish course, a slated halibut pate served with Jerusalem artcihokes and watercress. Wonderful, simply that! Next out a plate of boar carpaccio with kabu trunips and a strawberry vinaigrette. So so delicate and sweet and tender and again generous. By this point there was a definite danger of peaking too soon.

everybody needs to see Jamie!

A

n early shout out this week but with good cause. Everybody’s Talking About Jamie is not coming to Brighton until spring 2020, but be sure, this show will be a sell out. We were lucky enough to go along to see the show in the West End and see the very brilliant Layton Williams strutting out in his red platform heels as Jamie. Even more excitingly we also got to meet Jamie Campbell, the boy in the dress that became a hero for those of us who believe in real LGBTQ+ rights and especially for young people. Latest CIC, the arm of the Latest company that works on heritage projects across the city, has for the past year been working with Longhill

“Layton Williams has taken the West End by storm and will star in the tour” High School’s LGBTQ+ and Allies youth group. It’s been an eye opening experience, an exciting one too and the young people that embraced the project have been an inspiration. For those older members of our world,

whether straignt or other, to see how young people embrace gender and sexual preference is quite extraordinary. Back in our day… haha, no such thing. Everybody’s Talking About Jamie Is equally inspiring, the story of a teenager who wants to be a drag queen, and the amazing support he gets from his mother and a few friends. It started life as a TV documentary about Jamie who wanted to go to his school prom in a dress. It’s now a West End hit. The story is great and writers Jonathan Butterell and Tom MacRae with composer Dan Gillespie have put together a show that is entertaining, amusing and very moving. You will laugh out loud but I defy anyone not to cry as the story unfolds. The songs are great and all the better for being sung with Sheffield accents and not the invasive American accent that spoils so many home grown performers and performances. Layton Williams has to take the West End production by storm and the great news is that he will star in the touring production when it comes to Brighton. Layton has many stage accolades to his name but is probably best known for his hilarious roles in Bad Education. He has real star quality, a fine voice and dance moves that are quite frankly extraordinary. This is exceptional theatre that will strike just the right notes in Brighton, the gay capital of the UK. The production promises to be the full on West End product with real stars and everything that has gone into making this the true hit it has become. Everybody’s Talking About Jamie comes to Theatre Royal Brighton Mon 6 Apr - Sat 11 Apr 2020 Booking is already open atgtickets.com/brighton 0844 871 7650
