VORACIOUSLY VINTAGE A wonderful world of beautifully restored antiques and classic artefacts at Reginal Ballum in Worthing

T

hey say that once you embrace vintage there’s no turning back. Vintage pieces add character, depth, soul, style, history and uniqueness to your home in a way new items just can’t. There’s something wonderful and cathartic about trawling through antique shops to find the perfect piece for every nook and cranny of your home. Reginald Ballum is such a shop that you could easily lose a couple of hours just exploring. A distinctive little antique shop nestled in the West End of Worthing, it specialises in sourcing, renovating and selling a diverse collection of decorative antiques, timeworn classics, vintage and unique industrial pieces. It could be said that it’s Worthing’s best kept secret – as the town’s most attractive and competitively priced antique shop. It’s no wonder that the residents are reluctant to let news of this gem spread! The brainchild of founder and owner Darren Peskett, Reginald Ballum was born from an inherent passion for building, decorating and making interiors look beautiful. Darren grew up idolising his grandad, who was a master decorator at Christ Hospital in Horsham. He taught him everything about decorating and nurtured a passion for refurbishing and renovating. Darren later moved into the building trade and found himself offering interior design and styling advice to the clients he was working for, which led him to sourcing vintage and antique pieces for them, to add that unique and special finish to complete the job. Gradually he found himself venturing further into this side of things and so it 4 | LATEST HOMES

seemed a natural progression to branch out and focus more on supplying decorative antiques to a wider market, and so the hunt for a shop began! 83 Rowlands Road was found and work began to transform it into the Aladdin’s cave of delights they live in today – lovingly restored and sympathetically renovated to its former historic glory, creating the perfect showcase to launch Darren’s finest finds.

“ All items are oneoff and unique so stock frequently changes ” Reginald Ballum opened its doors in 2014, fittingly named after Darren’s grandad and role model. Darren’s passion and knowledge of antiques is evident in the quality and variety stocked across the shop’s two floors, all personally sourced nationally and from across Europe. Every item has been treated, renovated and curated with care, skilled craftsmanship and an eye for beauty to ensure that only stunning quality high end pieces make it onto the shop floor. It is this distinct quality that has enabled Reginald Ballum to supply oneoff items for the home, and also to provide decorative pieces to dress boutique hotels, restaurants, pubs and cafes.

004_005_LH872_Reginal_Layout 1 23/03/2018 10:15 Page 2

Darren’s natural instinct for selecting pieces is to simply buy what he likes and restore it to its former glory, which gives the shop it’s very personal vibe. Unlike other antique shops that are crammed full, Reginald Ballum has now garnered a reputation for Darren’s renowned style through the oneoff items he carefully and passionately displays throughout the shop; from bespoke industrial lighting to classic cocktail chairs, from mannequins to bar stools, from French dressers to chateau window mirrors, from bronze figurines to a 1970’s bedroom suite. All items are oneoff and unique so stock frequently changes – once it’s gone, it’s gone! That’s not to say similar items can’t be sourced again. In fact the Reginald Ballum team will happily add whatever you’re looking for to their shopping list and try and source a similar one for you. Or, if you have an idea for something bespoke talk to Darren about making it. He is always happy to lend ideas, advice and style tips – be it an item of furniture for your home, a full renovation project or a commercial refurbishment. The shop is open Thursday to Saturday 10am to 6pm and Sundays from 11am to 4pm – pop in for a browse and a chat – they love to chat! Alternatively you can look around the shop on their website www.reginaldballum.co.uk where the unique and unusual sit effortlessly alongside timeless period pieces, and bespoke designs (crafted from original and antique materials) stand out in bold statements from the hidden depths of this Aladdin’s cave full of time worn treasures. FOND FAREWELL John Brewins Retires After 44 Years’ Service

L

ocal law firm QualitySolicitors Howlett Clarke bade a fond farewell to veteran Brighton solicitor John Brewins, who retired last week. John served the local community for 44 years, joining Howlett Clarke in 2003 upon their merger with Aldrich Crowther and Wood.

“ John has long been a

familiar figure to many in the property business ”

As a private client lawyer, John has long been a familiar figure to many in the property business, as well as advising countless families. He will be missed by colleagues and clients alike. Clients praised John for his “consideration, professionalism and calm approach”, and called him “courteous and efficient”, “warm, friendly and most of all very understanding”. 6 | LATEST HOMES

The firm threw a farewell party for John at Brighton’s iconic i360 on 22 March. Champagne flowed and speeches were made following a ride up the world’s tallest moving observation tower. Managing Partner of Howlett Clarke, Jackie Gillespie, said; “John has had a career to be proud of. He has been an asset to this firm for the last 35 years and we are very sorry to see him go, but we all wish him a very happy retirement. He deserves it.” www.qualitysolicitors.com/howlettclarke

PROJECT

BRIGHTON Building a bright future for Brighton Dome: A oneofakind renovation project is breathing new life into the nationally important Corn Exchange and Studio Theatre

S

ituated in the heart of the city’s Royal Pavilion Estate, Brighton Dome has had many guises over its 200year history. Originally designed as the Prince Regent's riding stables, it has also been a roller skating rink, the site of a thwarted Suffragette protest, and a World War One hospital. In 1867 the iconic venue was converted into a concert and assembly hall, soon becoming one of the most fashionable and culturally significant venues in the south. The opening was reported in The Illustrated London News with the words: “The visitors to Brighton... will be surprised and gratified to find how successfully this place, formerly a neglected adjunct of the Pavilion stables, has been converted into one of the most agreeable halls for a promenade concert or exhibition in any town in the kingdom... The fantastical and whimsical taste of George IV does not appear so unsuitable to a place of this description, which will be devoted to miscellaneous uses of display, festivity & entertainment.”

“ Due to be completed in 2019,

the improvement works will reveal longlost heritage features ”

Since then a dazzling array of artists have graced the stages – from early jazz pioneers, the Southern Syncopated Orchestra, and worldfamous singer, actor and activist Paul Robeson, to David Bowie and the Rolling Stones. Pink Floyd, whose first appearance was supporting the late great Jimi Hendrix, debuted their classic Dark Side Of The Moon album live at Brighton Dome in January 1972, while in 1974 the venue hosted ABBA’s famous victory in the Eurovision Song Contest with Waterloo. Now two of its venues, the Grade I listed Corn Exchange (formerly the Riding house) and the Studio Theatre (once a supper room), are being remodelled to restore, revive and interconnect its spaces and transform it into a space fit for generations to come. Due to be completed in 2019, the improvement works will reveal longlost heritage features, create new spaces for artists to explore their creativity, provide new provisions for all such as a visitor welcome area and a public viewing gallery overlooking the Corn Exchange, stateoftheart facilities to improve experiences at shows and allow more extraordinary arts events to be showcased, and a streetfacing café to add to the buzz of Brighton and help build a future economic resilience. There will also be new and improved conference spaces. A collaboration between Brighton Dome & Brighton Festival, the Royal Pavilion & Museums, Brighton & Hove, and Brighton & Hove City Council, these transformational works are the first phase in an ambitious vision to restore and reunite the buildings and landscape of the historic Estate and improve the centrepiece of the city’s cultural quarter. Alongside improved wayfinding and heritage displays across the Estate, and, with two subsequent phases encompassing improvements to the Royal Pavilion Garden and the creation of new learning spaces, the project will deepen and broaden the cultural tourism offer of Brighton & Hove and significantly contribute to the city’s cultural and economic wellbeing. With the majority of phase one funding now in place, including major contributions from National Lottery players via Arts Council England and the Heritage Lottery Fund, Coast to Capital Local Growth fund, local council support and commitments from a number of charitable trusts and individual donors, a new community appeal has just been launched to raise some of the remaining funds to complete the project and help enrich more lives for another 200 years. LANDLADY A Disarray of Sunshine

T

he clocks have gone forward, the Beast From The East has receded and all is in disarray at Landlady Towers. I returned from Barbados, landing half an hour before the arrival of said Beast, to find my house obscured by scaffolding, the hallway stripped and sanded to within millimetres of its life and my bedroom appearing to have the entire contents of the Sahara desert dumped on its surfaces. No matter, I snored away for a couple of hours, then went out to Craig Charles at Concorde2, leaving me in a very strange time zone indeed. I think I’m still in this time zone and am not prepared to leave it just yet as it’s rather nice feeling sleepy all the time. I even fell asleep in the dentist’s chair this morning. The shame. Impossible though it would’ve been, I was rather hoping that all the work on my house would magically be finished by the time I returned, but one would have to work very fast indeed to fit a month’s work into just eight days. My initial reason for going to Barbados with my friend Katy, was to have a look at property, with perhaps a vague inkling that I might buy something there in the future. Alas, I found the (mainly British) tourist

contingent there a little too old, sunburnt and fleshy, in the way only people who spend their days sitting on their arses drinking gin, and their nights eating too much can be. Katy quite rightly pointed out that, when sitting in a bar (drinking our own gin and eating hideously overpriced [imported] lobster), she’d much rather be looking at betterpreserved and less fleshy people and I tend to agree. I was also not a fan of the fact that, although there is

“ Although there is plenty

plenty of money swilling around Barbados, not a lot of it seems to trickle its way down to the island’s needy, whose daily life is a struggle, with no social help or healthcare system to speak of. There is also no work, apart from in tourism, so jobs are poorly paid and few and far between, giving the locals little hope for the future. The dismissal of Barbados as a potential winter home gives us the excuse to ‘go and have a look at’ other Caribbean islands to

see if the tourist demographic and government system is any more favourable. Nice work if you can get it.

NOW & THEN Andy Garth: Stylish Headings

I

know we are really trying to live in a paperless society and save some trees, but in the heady times of the early 20th century, if you had a business, however small, it seems that your headed paper was a fine advert for your wares (sorry to sound like a song from Oliver or My Fair Lady!) – as shown from the magnificent examples shown here.

“ Classed themselves as

General Drapers or – to you and me – a clothes shop ”

Hanningtons were a very large establishment at the bottom of North Street, running round into East Street, and classed themselves as General Drapers or – to you and me – a clothes shop! They were used by Royalty, as they have a royal seal, which was a fine achievement for a local Brighton shop. All bills were hand written beautifully. The second photo shows an actual engraving of the business premises of a 8 | LATEST HOMES

one shop trader at 84 London Road Brighton. I Farncombe were ironmongers and cutlers, and also dealt in water gas and electrical matters. This bill is from 1905 and incredibly they had a very early phone number – Brighton 186. The shop was demolished and on the site now is the Al Campo Lounge restaurant. The final picture is for a fine art dealer in North Street and the heading really paints a picture (see what I did there?) and tells you what it does – and so as to complete the jigsaw, this shop became part of the Hanningtons site which was added to over the years.
