INTRODUC TION

Gibran Khalil Gibran is not only the author of The Prophet, a bestseller translated into more than 60 languages since its publication in New York in 1923, but he has also published numerous texts, and his paintings are shown in many major museums.

The goal of this bulletin, published twice a year, is to provide news about Gibran Khalil Gibran – including recent publications, reports related to events and conferences, unpublished documents, studies of his work, etc. – and to reach out to scholars and researchers interested in Gibran in English, Arabic and French. This bulletin shall be available online. Hard copies can also be obtained upon request. Specialists can contribute to this bulletin by submitting their papers to: clh@lau.edu.lb

Gibran Khalil Gibran ne fut pas seulement l’auteur du Prophète, best-seller traduit dans plus de soixante langues depuis sa parution à New-York en 1923.

Il a également composé de nombreux textes et ouvrages de valeur, et ses peintures sont exposées dans d’importants musées.

Le but de ce Bulletin, publié semestriellement, est de fournir en anglais, en arabe et en français, des informations sur Gibran (dernières parutions, compte-rendu d’événements et de conférences, documents inédits, ainsi que des études relatives à son œuvre), et de rassembler les universitaires et les chercheurs qui s’intéressent à lui. Ce Bulletin sera disponible via Internet, mais également sous forme imprimée. Les spécialistes pourront y contribuer et nous soumettre leurs articles à l'adresse suivante: clh@lau.edu.lb

L’ I N F L U E N C E D ’O D I LO N REDON SUR GIBRAN Par Alexandre Najjar* Ecrivain et peintre, Gibran Khalil Gibran a été influencé par de nombreux penseurs, comme Nietzsche et Maeterlinck, et par plusieurs artistes qu’il a découverts aux Etats-Unis et en France où il séjourna de 1908 à 1910. A l’occasion d’une visite au Musée des BeauxArts de Bordeaux, un tableau d’Odilon Redon, natif de la ville, m’a ouvert les yeux sur l’influence profonde que celui-ci exerça sur l’auteur du Prophète.

La plupart des biographies consacrées à Gibran citent le peintre symboliste Odilon Redon au nombre des artistes qui l’ont influencé 1, à savoir William Blake, Gustave Moreau, Eugène Carrière et Pierre Puvis de Chavannes, mais elles ne vont pas très loin dans le rapprochement entre leurs œuvres picturales respectives. Or, à l’examen des tableaux de Redon, force est de constater qu’il a certainement marqué l’artiste libanais qui lui a emprunté plusieurs thèmes avant de les revisiter à sa manière.

L’ H O M M E A I L É

Le tableau de Redon exposé au Musée des Beaux-Arts de Bordeaux représente un homme pourvu d’une paire d’ailes. Il s’agit, d’après la légende, d’un « homme ailé » (en anglais : The Winged Man). Que signifie cette œuvre ? Les ailes symbolisent en général l’envol, la dématérialisation, la libération de l’âme et de l’esprit. Elles expriment une élévation vers le divin, un élan pour dépasser la condition terrestre. Dans les écrits de Gibran comme dans ses œuvres picturales (par exemple: « L’homme libéré de son corps » et « La lutte pour la libération »), cette même idée est omniprésente : l’homme ailé ou « le moi ailé » (The Winged Self) – terme que l’on retrouve dans Le Prophète où l’on peut lire : « Notre Dieu, qui êtes notre moi ailé (…), c’est votre désir en nous qui désire » – est le symbole de l’être qui essaie de transcender sa condition humaine pour aspirer à ce qui le hisse vers le divin pour s’unifier à Dieu, dans une dynamique qui n’est pas sans rappeler le soufisme et le concept de l’unicité de l’existence (Ahadiat al Woujoud). Aux yeux de Gibran, l’homme ne saurait se réduire à ce qu’il est : il doit se surpasser, avancer avec un désir ardent (le Chawk des soufis) vers son moi divin, chercher à atteindre l’unité universelle où tout se réintègre dans un chant unique et total. Ainsi, le moi, après avoir parcouru le chemin qui conduit à Dieu, se confond avec Lui. « L’homme, écrit-il dans Les Dieux de la Terre, est un dieu qui s’élève lentement » (Man is a God Rising Slowly). Le 30 janvier 1916, dans une lettre à Mary Haskell, il précise sa pensée : « Dieu désire que l’homme et la Terre deviennent comme Lui et une part de Lui. Dieu

This study shows the influence of the symbolist painter Odilon Redon on Gibran paintings. Gibran discovered Redon’s works in Paris and in New York where an International Exhibition of Modern Art, known as “ Armory Show”, was held on 1913.

According to this study, there are many similarities between Redon and Gibran ideas and drawings. Both artists shared the same vision regarding many topics like “the Winged self”, Centaurs, Eyes, Jesus, John the Baptist, Orpheus and Silence...

croît à travers Son désir, et l’homme et la Terre et tout ce qui est sur terre s’élèvent vers Dieu par la puissance du désir. »

Les centaures peuplent l’univers d’Odilon Redon. On les retrouve notamment dans son album Les Origines (1883) où figurent des chimères tirées de la mythologie. On a ainsi pu recenser chez lui une vingtaine de tableaux ou dessins de centaures comme « Centaure visant les nues », « Centaure et Chiméra », « Centaure et centauresse », « Femme et centaure », « Centaure dans un paysage », « Le centaure et le violoncelle » ou « Centaure lisant ».

Redon était visiblement fasciné par ces créatures (on a pu y voir l’influence de Darwin et de ses théories sur l’évolution auxquelles l’artiste avait été initié par son ami le botaniste Armand Clavaud) au point de défendre dans un article sur le Salon de 1868 l’œuvre d’Eugène Fromentin intitulée « Centaures et centauresses s’exerçant à l’arc » contre les propos acerbes de plusieurs critiques de l’époque. Symbole de la double nature de l’homme, l’une bestiale, l’autre divine, le centaure est également présent dans dix-sept œuvres de Gibran réalisées notamment entre 1915 et 1916.

* Alexandre Najjar a consacré à Gibran une biographie traduite dans plusieurs langues, de deux essais (Awraq Gibrania et Sur les traces de Gibran) et un beau-livre. Il a participé à l’élaboration de ses Œuvres complètes en français dans la collection Bouquins chez Laffont et a rédigé le Dictionnaire Gibran qui y figure. Il est l’auteur du scénario du téléfilm Gibran et a obtenu le prix Gibran décerné par le Comité national Gibran.

ORPHÉE

Gibran a consacré deux tableaux à Orphée (l’un où il porte sa lyre ; l’autre mort, avec sa tête flottant à la surface du fleuve, alors que des colombes blanches – qu’on retrouve dans d’autres toiles du peintre – s’envolent en direction de l’empyrée), à l’instar de plusieurs sculpteurs (tel Auguste Rodin, « Orphée et Eurydice », 1893) ou peintres connus2 comme son professeur à Paris, Pierre Amédée MarcelBéronneau (« Orphée dans l’Hadès » et « Orphée aux enfers »), mais aussi Gustave Moreau (« La jeune fille thrace portant la tête d’Orphée», 1865 ; « Orphée sur la tombe d’Eurydice », 1890)), Jean Delville (« Orphée mort », 1893), Pierre Puvis de Chavannes (« Orphée » , 1883) ou Odilon

Redon qui a à son actif « un cycle d’Orphée » comprenant au moins six tableaux ou dessins saisissants 3: l’un où l’on voit Orphée debout, complètement nu, les bras croisés au-dessus de sa tête (1900), un deuxième le représentant « sommeillant » (1910), les quatre autres (réalisés entre 1881 et 1910) le montrant mort, décapité par les Ménades, sa tête jetée dans l’Hèbre voguant sur sa lyre magique.

Sensibles à la poésie, les artistes symbolistes ne pouvaient que rendre hommage à ce héros de la mythologie grecque.

L’Œ I L

L’œil est un thème récurrent dans l’œuvre de Redon qui le place partout (par exemple dans une montgolfière ou un cube) et qui aime dessiner des cyclopes. Signe maçonnique (il représente le Grand Architecte de l’Univers), l’œil divin est également présent, au milieu d’une paume, dans une des illustrations du Prophète: « The Divine world ».

LE CHRIST

Comme Odilon Redon qui a très souvent peint ou dessiné le Christ (« Christ » 1878-1880, au fusain et à la craie noire, qui fait partie de ses « Noirs » et qui est conservé au Musée des Beaux-Arts de Bruxelles, « Le Christ du silence », 1897; « Christ en croix », 1905 ; « Le Christ au sacré cœur », v. 1895… ), Gibran, qui était fasciné par le personnage de Jésus – qui lui a inspiré un livre et plusieurs textes – l’a représenté dans plusieurs de ses œuvres, dont « Jesus, The Son of Man », deux dessins intitulés « Head of Christ » (1920 et 1910-1915) tous conservés au Telfair Museum.

SAINT JEAN-BAPTISTE

Dans Jésus, fils de l’homme, Gibran évoque saint JeanBaptiste. Et dans une de ses toiles, conservée au musée Soumaya à Mexico, il représente Salomé portant la tête du Pré-curseur. Or Odilon Redon a lui-même signé plusieurs œuvres représentant la tête de saint Jean-Baptiste posée sur une coupe ou sur un plateau, peu après la décollation.

LE SILENCE

Dans une aquarelle célèbre de 1922, conservée au Musée de Bécharré, Gibran a représenté le silence sous la forme d’une femme aux yeux mi-clos posant deux doigts sur ses lèvres. Cette image se retrouve dans un tableau d’Odilon Redon ayant pour titre « Le Silence » 4.

A côté de ces rapprochements, il convient de signaler aussi que les études de têtes et les portraits esquissés par Gibran, notamment dans la série qu’il a intitulée « Le Temple de l’Art », ressemblent un peu à ceux que Redon dessinait (voir par exemple le dessin au fusain « Eyes closed » de Gibran, datant de 1910-1914, qui rappelle « Yeux clos », datant de 1890, de Redon), de même que l’on retrouve chez les deux artistes des personnages nus, au milieu de la nature, ou portant des voiles blancs ou transparents.

Gibran connaissait-il l’œuvre de Redon ? La réponse ne fait pas de doute : lors de son séjour parisien, il visita de nombreux musées et plusieurs expositions, et eut l’occasion de se familiariser avec les œuvres du peintre bordelais, à l’instar de celles de Pierre Puvis de Chavannes, Gustave Moreau, Jean Delville, Emile Antoine Bourdelle ou Eugène Carrière. De retour aux Etats-Unis, Gibran visita l’Exposition internationale d’art moderne surnommée « Armory Show » 5 qui, à l’initiative de l’Association des peintres et sculpteurs américains, se tint du 17 février au 15 mars 1913 6 à New York, entre la 25e Rue et le 68 Lexington Avenue, dans les locaux de l’ « Infantry Regiment Armory », puis, dans un format réduit, à l’Institut d’art de Chicago (du 24 mars au 16 avril) et au siège de la Copley Society of Art à Boston (du 28 avril au 19 mai). Cette exposition collective, qui proposait quelque 1250 œuvres réalisées par 300 artistes avantgardistes, dont 1/3 d’Européens, comptait de nombreux tableaux d’Odilon Redon, comme en témoigne le catalogue de l’exposition et la correspondance échangée entre Gibran et sa protectrice Mary Haskell 7. Fort de l’appui de l’agent européen de l’Armory Show, Walter Pach, qui lui consacra un opuscule de 15 pages, Redon fut l’un des artistes les mieux représentés, avec une quarantaine de peintures exposées dans la Galerie J, et une trentaine de lithographies accrochées dans la Galerie K – dont il vendit la plupart à l’issue de cette exposition 8.

L’Armory Show, qui fut « l’acte de naissance de la modernité picturale américaine », impressionna Gibran qui le considéra comme « une révolte, une déclaration d’indépendance » 9 et qui salua avec enthousiasme l’œuvre de Redon qui, d’après lui, « a un esprit et une grandeur » 10.

A l’évidence, Gibran fut influencé par l’art d’Odilon Redon qui évoque un monde onirique pénétré d’intense spiritualité, et par sa conception de la peinture quand il affirme : « Mes dessins inspirent et ne se définissent pas. (...) Ils nous placent, ainsi que la musique, dans le monde ambigu de l'indéterminé. » Mais, tout comme dans ses écrits, l’auteur du Prophète sut verser les idées et les images de Redon dans un moule sui generis pour les intégrer dans une construction mystique à la fois cohérente et originale !

The Daily Star, a leading Lebanese English language newspaper in the Middle East, wrote about recently uncovered letters and drawings by the Lebanese poet Kahlil Gibran.

The collection of 33 letters by Gibran to Marie El-Khoury was auctioned off, as were three of his drawings. In total, they fetched $183,750, around 4 times its pre-estimated value, at Sotheby's Dubai. The original figure for the collection was placed at between $42,000 and $54,000.

Multiple bidders sought to claim ownership over various items in the collection, and the auction was “highly contested,” a press release from the art dealer said.

The letters provide a window into Gibran's relationship with El-Khoury. Sotheby's described the collection as an “...extensive group of letters [that] brings to light the last major collection of Gibran memorabilia whose existence was practically unknown until recently.”

Gibran Chair Director May Rihani shared her thoughts on the letters in an interview with The Daily Star. Rihani, who worked first-hand with the letters following their recent acquisition by Sotheby's, stated that Gibran and El-Khoury had an "intimate relationship."

In October of this year, Sotheby's invited Rihani to deliver a lecture and Q&A session in London on the significance of these letters and the process of unfolding the relationship between Gibran and El-Khoury, a relationship unbeknown to many.

Throughout Gibran’s life, he nurtured deeply intimate relationships with those that crossed his path, regardless of their status and affiliations.

His dearest friends were extremely varied: from his lover, Mary Haskell, a Boston school teacher to Abdu'l-Bahá, the eldest son of the Bahá'u'lláh, founder and leader of the Bahá'í Faith. It is an honor for Sotheby’s to present to the public a rare

glimpse into the mysterious personal life of the celebrated Kahlil Gibran.

Among these rare items are 33 letters written from 1908 to 1920 during his travels to New York, Boston, Atlantic City and Paris, from the artist to his friend and patron, Madame Marie Azeez El-Khoury.

Madame Marie Azeez El-Khoury was a poster -child of the American Dream. An unusual

occurrence for a SyrianLebanese woman at this time, Marie El-Khoury rose from a modest immigrant background to become nothing less than a celebrity in the circles of the New York City elite.

She started her career in journalism, but later due to her father’s unexpected death, took over his trade, and became a notable gem dealer and jewelry designer.

Khoury’s dinner parties were “legendary”, and such an invitation was among the most coveted in the city. But even amid Khoury’s many cultured friends, she had a particular reverence for Gibran’s ability to electrify and enthuse; her obituary cites her sentiment, “[Kahlil Gibran] was a great raconteur. When he spoke all listened.” Among the many roles Khoury played in her life, she was also a known patron of The Pen League.

She sponsored the early and most pivotal years of Gibran’s career. Her contributions allowed Gibran to pursue his first publication in 1912, Broken Wings, the forerunner to his epic writing career.

The community Gibran fostered became an inextricable part of his creative production, supplying the artist with the necessary fodder for understanding the power of positive relationships for the human soul - teaching Gibran notions of love, care and joy amid a sterile and callous society. Some of his closest acquaintances such as Ameen Rihani, Richard Le Gallienne, Youssef Beik Moushi and Mrs. Jarbel are even mentioned by Gibran in the letters he had written to Marie El-Khoury.

This extensive group of letters brings to light the last major collection of Gibran memorabilia whose existence was practically unknown until recently. They are particularly important as they reveal Gibran’s thoughts at critical junctures in his life which he describes as key turning points while also uncovering a personal and intimate relationship with Marie El-Khoury. The 33 letters written mostly in Arabic and some in English on plain

and letterhead paper with a consistent use of a particular colophon, were addressed to El-Khoury from Boston, New York, Atlantic City and Paris and are paramount in being witness to Gibran’s work as both a writer and an artist. The letters include drawings by Gibran in certain subjects which would evolve into some of his most famous compositions such as the drawing of a hand holding fire. Gibran mentions another well-known drawing within these letters, entitled Two Masks – also known as Eclipse that he later on exhibited at a gallery in New York as well as two of his Arabic books, Spirit Rebellious (1908) and Broken Wings (1912). (...) It is a true pleasure for Sotheby’s to showcase three exceptional studies by Kahlil Gibran, including Study of a Portrait of Paul Wayland Bartlett, the famed 20th century American sculptor, executed during his tenure in Paris. Additionally, Sotheby’s is presenting two captivating drawings from the pivotal years leading up to the publication of The Prophet. The studies, much like many of his drawings, have a distinctive duality to them - balancing both a sense of divine beauty with an opposing sinister quality.

These studies are expressive in his use of line and form and act as a gateway into the interior of the multidimensional Gibran. The works for sale are rare objects to appear in auction, only passing through the hands of Gibran’s closest friends and their descendants.

Marie Azeez was born in Lebanon and moved to the United States as a child in 1891 with her parents Tannous Azeez and Julia

Tabet. Her father started a jewelry business in lower Manhattan but later moved his business to Atlantic City, New Jersey. Marie attended Washington College for Young Ladies in Eckington graduating in 1900 when she was just 17 years old. She is considered to be possibly the first Lebanese-American or Arab-American young woman to graduate from a college.

As a young woman, Marie Azeez wrote for Arabiclanguage publications in the United States and intended to have a career in journalism. Marie Azeez married magazine publisher Esau el-Khoury in 1902. She was widowed at age 21 when Esau died in 1904. When her father died in 1905, Marie took over Tannous Azeez's jewelry business and moved it back to New York. She retained the business's name "The Little Shop of T. Azeez" in her father's memory.

Her designs were featured in Vogue, The New Yorker, and in The Christian Science Monitor.

She continued writing, including some jewel-themed short stories syndicated in Sunday newspapers across the United States. Marie El-Khoury donated a bound volume of Al-Dairah magazine (1900-1901), the "first magazine published in Arabic in the Western Hemisphere, “to the Library of Congress in 1945. She was also a member of the Board of Trustees at the Metropolitan Museum of Modern Art. Marie Azeez El-Khoury died in 1957 at age 74 in New York. The New York Times obituary described her as "one of this city's leading and most original jewelry designers”.

O Beloved Marie, Beginning Sunday and up till this hour, I have been among friends and acquaintances, like a boat in the middle of the sea rolled by the waves and buffeted by winds, I became tired of being honored and flattered and invited, however, I am yearning for the golden corner that is filled with quiet and silence - and now, I stole an hour from my friends and came to a room to be alone and talk to you to revive my spirit with ideas and dreams that swim around my head when I sit alone and think of you. You, Marie, are like the pure morning breeze carrying the fragrance of flowers and

breaths of bouquets. So, when I think of you I feel an internal ease as though my spirits have been bathed by waves of this perfumed breeze.

Christmas has passed but it did not leave in my heart except regret, longing, and sad memories. However, I put on the appearance of happiness and joy before those whom I like and who like me. And I hate putting on appearances, even the kind that makes other people happy. Holidays, Marie, are seasons of happiness for some people but seasons of sadness for many.

I will return to New York by the end of the week, and were it not for some work

I would return tomorrow, but it is life that steers us sometimes through valleys and other times to the top of the mountains. And even though I consider myself to be free, I still am obliged to pay attention to my work and the relationships my work has created with others.

I long for you, O Marie, with all the yearning of fire. I long for the playing, laughter, and smiles, and for the touch of your hands and your shoulders. And I long for your teasing me!!

Think about me a little if you are able, and allow me to place a small kiss - a very small kiss - on your tender palm.

According to The Huffington Post (June 15, 2017), Robert Goodhouse, vice president of Rapiscan Systems, along with a number of other scholars, has analyzed a photograph of a dinner party held in New York City in 1929 as a tribute to Kahlil Gibran in order to reveal the identity of the guests.

This picture, property of Soumaya Museum and Carlos Slim Foundation, shows a number of well-known Lebanese and Syrian personalities attending the event: Abdel Massih Haddad, Dr. Philip Hitti, Nassib Arida, Mikhaïl Naïmeh, William Cazteflis, Salloum Moukarzel and others. Gibran himself can be seen in the back.

KAHLIL GIBRAN AND THE FEMININE DIVINE The exhibition “Kahlil Gibran and the Feminine Divine” took place at the Jepson Center for the Arts, in Savannah, Georgia from April 21, 2017 to January 2, 2018.

Based on Gibran’s work completed in the United States and donated in 1950 by his lifelong friend Mary Haskell Minis, the exhibition concentrated on pieces that capture Gibran’s enduring belief in the oneness of all things, often characterized in his artwork as the feminine divine.

As the title suggests, the exhibition “focused on women, the influence they had on Gibran’s life, and the oneness of all people. Women yielded a powerful influence on Gibran, from his mother, who packed up her family and emigrated from

Lebanon to Boston to start a new life, to Haskell Minis herself, who was a lifelong mentor.” (Rachael Flora) Gibran’s use of goddess imagery not only reflects his belief in a Universal Spirit, embodied by female figures, but also reveals the powerful influence women exerted on his own life, molding him into the visionary poet and artist known to the world today. Gibrans visual and literary works continue to inspire and resonate, as evidenced through contemporary female artists like Sawsan Al-Saraf, Sundus Abdul Hadi and Tamara Abdul Hadi, whose work were shown from May 26 through September 10 at the Jepson Center, creating a powerful parallel between exhibitions.

Scholars Francesco Medici and Glen Kalem have produced a long-overdue study of the official number of translations of Kahlil Gibran’s crowning achievement The Prophet.

No comprehensive study has been done on this scale until now. For decades, it was thought that between 40 and 60 translations were in circulation. Yet the recent study has revealed that the true number is much higher.

It turns out that The Prophet is among the most-translated works of all time, cementing the book’s place in the upper echelons of the publishing world and adding another historical milestone to the world of Lebanese literature.

The scholars’ findings will be announced at the Third International Conference for Kahlil Gibran, to be held in Beirut, Lebanon on January 4 through 6, 2018.

The conference has been organized by The George and Lisa Zakhem Kahlil Gibran Chair for Values and Peace of Maryland University, in partnership with the Gibran National Committee and the Center for Lebanese Heritage at the Lebanese American University.

The testimonials demonstrate the significant impact this man had on others, whether through personal encounters or through his work.

Les éditions Bayard viennent de publier Le Sable et l’écume de Gibran dans une nouvelle traduction de Nicolas Waquet qui préface l’ouvrage. L’occasion de redécouvrir ce livre d’aphorismes qui nous offre "ses réflexions les plus intimes sur l’amour, le désir, l’amitié, la mort, la liberté, la fuite et la permanence des êtres et des choses".

Al-Awasef, dans sa traduction en français par Omayma Arnouk el-Ayoubi, vient de sortir aux éditions Erick Bonnier à Paris : "Aspirant à une existence humaine digne, à une justice mieux établie, Gibran s'est trouvé engagé, dès les premières insurrections de son peuple contre l'empire ottoman, dans l'élan qui portait l'Orient vers la liberté et la modernité. Tel est le ressort profond d'Orages, où le poète, mariant le temporel et le spirituel, recherche la réalisation de son être profond au milieu de ses contradictions." L’ouvrage, que les biographes préfèrent intituler Les Tempêtes, avait déjà paru en 2005 aux éditions Carnot. À noter que Omayma Arnouk el-Ayoubi a aussi publié une traduction-adaptation du Prophète, préfacée par Abdallah Naaman (Éditions Alphée, Jean-Paul Bertrand, 2008).
