Dear neighbors,

Despite another challenging year, our LMH Health physicians, providers and staff continued to provide the highest quality healthcare for our patients and community As we look back on 2022, we also look ahead to 2023, which will see LMH expanding services close to home, increasing access in primary care clinics throughout the area, and continuing to grow an exceptional team of clinicians dedicated to being “A Partner for Lifelong Health ”

Throughout the coming year, you will see increased efforts to control patient costs while growing access to patient-centered technology and expanded diagnostic services Both are vital to our continuation to be an independent, community hospital that you can trust for your healthcare needs

The year ahead will also see LMH Health bring new specialty services closer to home through a strategic clinical relationship with the University of Kansas Health System (TUKHS) This agreement is the result of more than a year and a half of physician-led, patient-centered conversations . It will bring expanded healthcare services to our community, while maintaining more than a century of independence for your community hospital

Challenges will still abound this year However, we will continue to deliver the best care for our patients while creating new possibilities Thanks to our healthcare providers and staff, LMH Health will remain a strong, independent hospital ready to meet your needs and exceed your expectations .

Dear partners,

We find ourselves at an important mile marker in our Destination Health journey — our plan that maps the hospital’s path to a healthy future as a Partner for Lifelong Health

LMH Health has accomplished much in the past several years, including expanding our physician collaborations and improving access to care with new clinic locations We have built and strengthened our community relationships with organizations like Bert Nash Community Mental Health Center, Lawrence-Douglas County Public Health and Heartland Community Health Center Additionally, we have invested in patient care with advanced robotic technology, updating our cancer center and preparing to add a second cath lab

By doing all of this, we have placed LMH Health in a stronger position for the long term Our pathway forward for the next three to five years is one that seeks to fully leverage these accomplishments — as well as your philanthropic investments — into the full benefits that they can yield for our community .

We seek to expand the breadth and depth of services offered locally, build our workforce culture and expand our providers’ clinical offerings We will adopt technologies and processes that embrace patient experience, autonomy and efficiency

And, as you’ll read in this report, LMH Health is building a strategic clinical partnership with the University of Kansas Health System to expand access to specialty care right here within our community, while maintaining our independence

Our focus remains steady on building our presence in the healthcare market, expanding our services, and preparing our organization for more a competitive and dynamic future With your support, we will continue to thrive for years to come

Getting back on the court starts here: Kansas men’s basketball assistant coach Norm Roberts shares his

hip replacement story

Looking at Norm Roberts on the court, he is the picture of health But the longtime assistant coach for the Kansas men’s basketball team has turned to OrthoKansas and undergone not one but two hip replacements over the past three years

When Roberts knew he needed to seek care for his hip pain, he made an appointment with Adam Goodyear, MD, an orthopedic surgeon at OrthoKansas specializing in knees and hips

First look

Goodyear performed the surgery on Roberts’ right hip at the LMH Health Main Campus in 2020 using an approach that has gained notoriety over the last 15 years — the direct anterior approach . Where a traditional surgical approach involves entering the hip from the side and back to place the new joint, Goodyear explained that the direct anterior approach provides some different benefits to the patient .

“Studies show that this leads to less pain after surgery and typically a quicker recovery,” he said “It is the primary approach that both Dr (James) Huston and I use when it’s appropriate Every patient is different, but it was perfect for Coach Roberts ”

After surgery, Roberts spent one night in the hospital He began physical therapy soon afterward with a provider very familiar to the basketball team — former KU guard Tyrel Reed, a physical therapist with LMH Health Therapy Services

Round two — robotically

When he chose to first have surgery on his right hip, Roberts knew that it was only a matter of time before he needed to address the deterioration on his left side In August 2022, he once again turned to OrthoKansas for a replacement, but this time the surgery was performed with the aid of the MAKO robotic arm

“The MAKO system can be more precise than traditional surgical techniques The system utilizes a preoperative CT scan to create a 3D computer model of the patient’s joint, which helps us place the implant with more precision,” Goodyear explained “We typically cause less

6
“There’s a comfortable feeling about surgery to be successful and for

damage to soft tissues which can lead to less pain, less need for pain medication and a quicker recovery . ”

Roberts noticed a huge difference following this hip replacement

“Having my hip replaced robotically, it was 100 percent better than the first one . I felt much less pain — all I really had was discomfort — and I was off of the pain medications in two days My mobility was coming back even quicker than it did the first time,” he said

Roberts is back on the court this season as the Jayhawks defend their national title . He recommends turning to the experts at OrthoKansas for world-class care close to home when you need treatment for orthopedic and musculoskeletal issues

“There’s a comfortable feeling about being at LMH Health and OrthoKansas They want your surgery to be successful and for you to be knowledgeable about everything going on . I couldn’t be happier to have chosen LMH for my care ”

Donor support makes cutting-edge technology possible LMH Health has two MAKO systems to serve patients — one at the Main Campus and another at the West Campus, allowing for outpatient joint replacement surgery at the Lawrence Surgery Center . Having cutting-edge technology would not be possible without the support of donors like Dana Anderson He and his late wife, Sue, made a $1 million challenge gift to the LMH Health Foundation in early 2020 to support the purchase of technology such as the MAKO robot

Winning the game starts here: After a routine surgery revealed stage 4 cancer, Dee Bisel perseveres

If you’ve ever seen a Granny Basketball game around Lawrence, you’ve likely run into Dee Bisel . At age 74, she’s a staple in this sport that provides competition for women over age 50

“I’ve played Granny Basketball for five years, and I love it,” she said . “I think it brings out the youth in us I also played senior softball until three years ago when I got a concussion and had to quit . ”

But Dee was recently sidelined from the game she loves — and from many other activities — when she got a scary diagnosis after what she thought was going to be a routine hysterectomy: stage 4 colon cancer

Two weeks after her hysterectomy, Dee was wheeled into an operating suite to have 12 inches of her colon removed . Three weeks later in March 2022, she began chemotherapy .

Treatment begins

Dee turned to the team at the LMH Health Cancer Center to get world-class treatment close to home . The center holds official accreditation from the Commission on Cancer, a testament to the high-quality care LMH Health offers patients

“Dee received first-rate, evidence-based cancer care at LMH Health,” said Sherri Soule, MD, an oncologist with the LMH Health Cancer Center “We performed genomic profiling of her tumor to determine the best possible way to treat her specific cancer and incorporated the appropriate immunotherapy into her treatment ”

Dee was able to complete her treatment close to home, which was important for her appointments three times each week

Nearing the finish line

After undergoing 10 rounds of chemotherapy, Dee and her family received the news they’d been so hopeful for The scan was clean

Going forward, Dee’s prognosis is bright Her cancer is treatable, not curable, so her care team has put together a plan for maintenance to allow her to live a full life . She’s already thinking about upcoming vacations

8

“I’m so happy not to be living day to day and being able to plan a few months out,” Dee said “I’m looking forward to being here and seeing all of my grandkids graduate . ”

If you’ve received a cancer diagnosis, consider some simple advice from Dee: Follow the doctor’s instructions She knows it sounds basic, but don’t add or subtract from the doctor’s recommendations

“I just did exactly what they told me to do, whether I liked it or not,” she said “They’re the coaches and my job was to do what they told me to That’s how we’d win the game ”

Dee Bisel rang the bell and celebrated with her family at the conclusion of her treatment at the LMH Health Cancer Center

Longtime LMH Health volunteer embodies commitment to caring

Lew Nolan has provided more than 5,000 hours of service to LMH Health since 1993 To the staff and patients, Lew is not just a volunteer, he is a cornerstone at the hospital

When he moved to Lawrence, it was important to Lew to find a way to be an active participant in his new community . He first volunteered at the hospital in 1993 after seeing an article in the newspaper about an LMH Health volunteer

“I just wanted to be a good neighbor,” said Lew “No matter where or in what community you are, you need a team hospital was a great fit because you are helping people right as soon as they enter ”

Over the past 30 years, Lew has been one of the first faces a patient sees as they walk in . He spends much of his time at the information desk or as a wayfinder, helping patients into the building and to their destination

Each position allows him to connect with his community and hospital staff LMH Health staff have described him as a natural helper who is always looking for a way to make someone’s day better .

“He is very committed to what he does,” said Lauren Cobb, volunteer services manager . “He is a great model for being attentive to everyone who walks in the door . ”

Advancing health equity and cultural humility through education

In 2022, all LMH Health providers participated in newly required training to improve health equity Physicians and advanced practice providers now take courses in inclusion, diversity and equity (ID&E)-related material as a part of their annual education

This change was made to ensure providers are well equipped to meet the health system’s purpose of providing care to all, regardless of a patient’s race, culture, ability to pay and other social determinants of health

Lynley Holman, MD, FACOG, a physician at Lawrence OB/GYN Specialists, said she was incredibly proud of this commitment by the health system .

“There will always be new ways to learn to manage bleeding or use a tool,” said Holman “But this was a commitment made by the medical staff — and for the medical staff — to ensure that learning about all patient populations and addressing the social determinants of health is a priority ”

These courses range from in-person classes with guest speakers to online trainings on how providers can improve patient care through an ID&E lens . Educational sessions cover understanding implicit bias, recognizing health disparities, demonstrating cultural humility, supporting an inclusive workplace and more .

“This is a notable step in the right direction and illustrates the investment LMH Health is making to create awareness, identify inequities and address health disparities at the front lines of patient care,” said Erica Hill, the director of LMH Health Foundation Finance and Strategic Initiatives as well as the director of LMH Health Equity, Inclusion and Diversity

LMH Health Foundation update

New strategic clinical relationship inked

On February 22, 2023, the LMH Health Board of Trustees voted to approve a strategic clinical relationship with The University of Kansas Health System, paving the way for clinical partnerships that increase patient access to specialty care in and around Douglas County The agreement serves as a framework for the two separate institutions to explore collaborative endeavors, while ensuring LMH Health retains its independence .

Since 2019, a collaborative team of LMH Health physicians and administrators have worked with the Board of Trustees to explore how a strategic clinical relationship might strengthen local services, bring new specialists to the community and improve the coordination of specialized patient care All of these goals are designed to support the LMH Health medical staff and their work to continue providing outstanding care within an independent healthcare model .

LMH Health President and CEO Russ Johnson said it is important to remember that LMH Health has not been sold, and it is not for sale This arrangement ensures that LMH Health can remain a non-profit, independent community hospital for years to come . LMH Health is operating from a position of strength, leveraging a well-thought out strategic plan and a significant amount of input from providers and community leaders

“Our patients are the number one stakeholders in every decision we make,” said Adam Goodyear, MD, an orthopedic surgeon

with OrthoKansas who served on the LMH Health strategic clinic relationship (SCR) advisory committee “Patients will continue to see providers locally, and they can assist you by navigating highly-specialized care when and where it’s needed Research shows that patients have better outcomes when they receive care close to home ”

Sheryle D’Amico, LMH Health senior VP for strategic partnerships and chair of the SCR advisory committee, said this reinforces the intent of the relationship

“These patients and families are an example of what we will further accomplish through this relationship with The University of Kansas Health System These patients would have otherwise had to travel out of town for procedures that can now take place at LMH Health,” said D’Amico “We are confident in this collaboration because our physicians have led the work, with our patients in mind I know they will continue to offer the guidance patients need to make the best decisions for their health, just as they do now ”

Three collaborations are already planned or underway:

Kansas Sports Medicine brings together physicians, clinicians and trainers from LMH Health OrthoKansas and The University of Kansas Health System Orthopedics and Sports Medicine team to provide expanded care at the LMH Health West Campus .

Since October 2022, 92 vascular surgery cases have been done in either the cath lab or the operating room within the Lawrence General Surgery suite at the Main Campus, thanks to an agreement with a team from The University of Kansas Health System .

The University of Kansas Health System is providing maternal-fetal specialists to the LMH Health Women’s Center on the West Campus, enabling hundreds of expectant mothers to receive care close to home from the best clinicians available in the region .
