SKIP-GENERATION HOLIDAYS
T
here is a trend I’ve noticed that I really like, it’s grandparents travelling with their grandkids. Now I’m not a grandfather yet — my daughter,
Alex, is only 20. So, I’m hoping I have another 10 years. But I can see the benefits:
• Grandkids are nice, cute, and generally do what they are told. • They don’t have boyfriends or girlfriends to bring, text, or cry about. • When they nap, I nap. Keep an eye out for upcoming stories on skipgeneration holidays. Safe travels, — Larry

You May Need to Take a Seat, You’ll Be Seeing Stars… The breakout comedy hit, Kim’s Convenience joins the YES TV lineup in 2020! Mr. and Mrs. Kim navigate the day to day of running a convenience store in Regent Park, while their son Jung and daughter Janet deal with generational and cultural clashes. The family opened the store after they immigrated to Toronto from South Korea, where Mr. Kim was a teacher. Mr. Kim’s gruff and opinionated personality clashes and complicates a difficult relationship with his estranged son, Jung (Simu Liu), who ran away from home as a teenager and now works at a car rental shop with his friend and roommate, Kimchee (Andrew Phung), and his manager, Shannon (Nicole Power). Mrs. Kim, who is very involved in her church, has kept in touch with Jung, though Mr. Kim does not know this. Jung’s younger sister, Janet (Andrea Bang), is a student at the Ontario College of Art and Design. She lives at home with her parents and helps them run the store. Join the family, Saturday nights at 8pm on YES TV. A history of chains, an enduring story of spirit… In 1750, eleven-year-old Aminata Diallo is abducted from her village in West Africa, placed in shackles, and sent across the ocean to be sold into slavery on a South Carolina indigo plantation by the V.O.C., a Dutch trading company. She falls in love and marries a fellow West African slave named Chekura, but when their baby is brutally abducted and sold by a jealous slave master, Robinson Appleby, Aminata tries to find her child later and vows to return one day to her homeland. Solomon Lindo, a sympathetic indigo inspector, plucks Aminata out of Appleby’s enslavement and takes her to New York where she escapes. Amidst the rising threat of the American War of Independence, she is recruited by Sir John Clarkson to help register names of Black Loyalists in a ledger known as The Book of Negroes, granting them freedom and passage to Nova Scotia. Witness this amazing story, Saturday nights at 7pm on YES TV.

start your day with
Tucker & Maura in the Morning It’s been a year since Scott Tucker and Maura Grierson made their triumphant return to morning radio with their new show on Energy 95.3. Every weekday morning, these popular on-air personalities entertain music lovers throughout Greater Toronto and Hamilton and help them start their day off right.
W
e caught up with the hilarious radio stars to find out more about their new gig.
It’s been a year since you started your new show on Corus Radio’s Energy 95.3. How does it feel to have the dream team back together again? Our team has always been together through the whole process! The ups and downs. After things changed for us at Virgin, we literally met up and had a stiff drink! It’s been a long road, and it could’ve easily been the last time we ever worked together. Then Energy came along and wanted to put our show back on the air. We are so grateful we found a new home and get to do a job we love as a team again! Many listeners will remember your time at Virgin Radio — which you poked fun of in the marketing for the new show. How would you describe your new show on Energy for those less familiar? Our show on Energy is edgier and more real than it’s ever been. We talk about stuff that friends talk about over beers on a Friday 12 www.onthego.to
night, and that’s how we want everyone to feel who’s listening to the show … like we’re at a pub together hanging out. From our sex lives, to Maura losing her Dad to cancer. We are the most honest morning show you’ll find. Our bosses have given us the freedom to talk about whatever we want, in whatever way we want. Do you ever get used to getting up super early? Do you have any tips on how to make early mornings manageable for our readers? You never get used to getting up at 3:30 am! You just get used to feeling run down all the time. LOL! But we aren’t complaining. We highly recommend naps! Even a 20 minute cat nap can make a huge difference in being able to stay up past 8 pm. On your radio show you introduce your listeners to all the biggest new hits. Do you have favourite current artists? Any new albums on your playlists? You can’t go wrong with Post Malone and Drake! On the top of both of our lists right now would definitely be the new album from the Weeknd.
What celeb interview do you brag to your friends about the most? Oh it’s a tie between having Jon Hamm, Jeremy Renner, and Ed Helms all at once in our studio, and the time we interviewed Tom Cruise, who was the nicest celebrity of anyone we ever met! He was the first celebrity to have no time limit on our interview! For a star in town with a busy schedule, that’s literally unheard of. You just wrapped up Tucker & Maura’s Sunshine Standby List, where you gave away an all-inclusive trip for two every
Friday for four weeks. Do you have any other exciting contests or giveaways in store for your listeners? We always have really cool contests in the works here at Energy… We are actually getting ready to send people all over the world! Anything else you’re looking forward to in 2020? Our show is only going to keep growing. We have plans to add new people to the show! That’s all we can say right now. ;) Tune in to Tucker & Maura on Energy 95.3 weekday mornings from 5:30–9:00am

New Changes to OHIP That Travellers Need To Know About Do you love to travel or are you a frequent flyer? Are you, family or friends planning on going on an adventure outside of Canada? If so, CAA Travel Insurance has important information for all Ontario travellers. As of January 1, 2020, the Ontario Health Insurance Plan, (OHIP) no longer covers any portion of out-of-country medical expenses. Whether you’re headed on a short getaway or an extended vacation, this change means that it is more important than ever to make sure you’re protected from the unexpected costs of a travel and/or medical emergency. WHAT SHOULD YOU DO? CAA Travel Insurance is raising awareness about the changes to OHIP and encouraging all Ontario travellers to shop around for travel medical insurance before you leave the country. Honestly, what better way to truly enjoy your downtime than by having the peace-of-mind that comes from knowing you’re covered. THINGS TO REMEMBER, BEFORE YOU BUY It’s important to take a bit of time to consider a few key items before you purchase a policy. Build travel insurance into your travel plans. Keep in mind that buying travel insurance has to be done in your home province and before you leave. You can even buy it right from the departure lounge! As you start planning your next vacation, just add it to your to-do list. 14 www.onthego.to
Be honest. It’s so important to answer any insurance questionnaire accurately and to disclose things like pre-existing conditions. This will ensure you have coverage suited specifically for you. Don’t base your decision on price alone. Look at what coverage is best for your needs and consider all different types of plans and level of protection. And last, but not least, speak to a knowledgeable travel insurance advisor who understands your needs. At CAA, we can help you understand the types of coverage options that exist and the kind of coverage you may need. Give us a call at: 1-833-699-9762, go online at caasco.com/OHIP or pop into your local CAA Store any time and we can help figure out what coverage option is right for your travels.
Attention travellers: Are you covered? As of January 1, 2020, Ontario residents no longer have out-of-country medical insurance coverage from OHIP. Make sure you pack travel insurance.

As a professional life coach, Franca Navarra assists people to create immediate and lasting change in any area of their lives. She helps individuals clearly define their vision, goals and dreams, and turns them into tangible results. Our readers asked Franca some of their most pressing questions about life, relationships and careers. Q: I am a twenty-four-year-old female, and I have been in a relationship with my partner for two years. When I see pictures of my friends having a great time with their boyfriends on social media, I find myself comparing my relationship to theirs, which leads me to question my relationship. Although I am happy for my friends, social media makes me feel jealous, self-pity, and judgmental of my own life. Is social media sabotaging me and my relationship? — Devi from Toronto
The greatest thing you can do is to get to the root of what you are lacking within yourself. If seeing your friends happy on a date with their boyfriends leaves you feeling jealous or questioning why you are not experiencing this with your partner, let their posts and pictures inspire you to plan your own date night with your loved one. It is this simple. No need to hate, celebrate what you have going on in your relationship. Also, before you peruse your favourite platform, remember the reasons you and your partner fell in love in the first place. A: Welcome to social media, my dear, where This will reignite beautiful memories of people welcome you into their personal life what you’ve shared, and it can also spark through their happy posts and pics. more of it for your future together. What People sabotage their own relationships can we do to bring back the excitement with their limiting beliefs, expectations, we had before the kiddos were born? conditions, and insecurities about themselves, which pour into their relationships. 18 www.onthego.to
A: Well, the great news is that you are amongst the many couples who have decided to have children. This can be an extremely rewarding experience. However, as much as you love and adore your children, they really do change everything in your life — including your sexual relationship. Although it may seem difficult right now, it is important to maintain a healthy and passionate sex life. The key to maintaining a healthy, vibrant, and passionate sex life is planning for spontaneity. When you are planning for spontaneity, you are not planning for sex. You are planning to spend private time together. Planning private time together alleviates the pressure to instantly be in the mood. There are no preconceived notions of what will happen. You are simply creating the time and space for your natural desires, connection, and passion to surface from the love you share for each other. For example, arrange for the children to have a sleepover with their grandparents or for a friend or sitter to take care of them for a few hours one weekend afternoon. The idea here is that you and your partner know ahead of time there will be some alone time where you can focus on each other. If sex is not on your mind initially, that’s okay. Creating an atmosphere where you can enjoy a quiet dinner, cuddling with each other while watching Netflix, or just holding hands on a walk, encourages many great things to spontaneously happen, and one of them might be sex. Just be sure to choose a caregiver you fully trust, so you can relax knowing your kids are well taken care of and happy. This requires you to trust and let go. When you
are in this state, you can be fully present in the moment, appreciating your time with your husband. Happy planning!

STILL EATING LUNCH AT YOUR DESK? More than Food: how you eat is important too.
If you ask a Canadian dietitian, they will tell you that healthy eating is not just about what you eat, but also how you eat. In our fast-paced world, “sad desk lunches” are common and 30 per cent of our food budgets are spent on restaurant meals which can have a serious impact on our health. That’s why this Nutrition Month, dietitians are rallying together and encouraging us to enjoy food, to eat meals together and to cook more often. Nutrition Month is the perfect time to learn how food impacts your health and to connect with a dietitian.

A dietitian can help! “When I meet with clients, we talk about more than food and health; we talk about things like why their culture and food traditions matter, how cooking at home can help them reduce food waste and how to notice when they are hungry and full,” explains Amy Yiu, a dietitian and Nutrition Month Spokesperson. BENEFITS FRAUD
REAL CRIME. REAL CONSEQUENCES. As part of the Canadian life and health insurance industry’s anti-fraud awareness campaign Fraud=Fraud, a 2018 survey commissioned by Environics Research Group revealed that 75% of insured Canadians surveyed think that the main consequence of benefits fraud is having to pay higher premiums or reimburse claim payments, and only 25% believe they could lose their jobs. The truth is, you could lose everything, and even end up in jail. WHAT DOES BENEFITS FRAUD LOOK LIKE? Benefits fraud occurs when you intentionally submit false or misleading information on your health or dental benefit claim for the purpose of financial gain, and it can take many forms. Some examples include: • B illing for health or dental services that were never received • Submitting the same claim to multiple insurers to double your reimbursement • Letting someone not covered by your plan use your benefits. WHAT CAN YOU DO? First, learn how to recognize the signs of fraud. Benefits fraud is not always easy to spot, especially when a trusted coworker, friend, family member, health, or dental service provider suggests it. Warning signs include feeling pressured by your service provider to get unnecessary products or procedures, or being encouraged by a colleague to visit a service provider offering cash or other incentives in exchange for your policy information. 24 www.onthego.to
Second, refuse to participate. The adage “if it seems too good to be true it probably is” applies here. Start by familiarizing yourself with your benefits plan and the limits of your coverage, don’t lend your card to anyone and be sure you understand the treatments, services, and products being prescribed to you. When in doubt, push pause and ask your HR department or insurance provider if what is being offered to you is allowed. Third, report it. While benefits fraud is easy to view as a faceless, victimless crime, it affects everyone — including your employer, your colleagues and your family. If you suspect that a coworker or health or dental service provider is committing benefits fraud, you can report it anonymously via your insurance provider’s website or by visiting fraudisfraud.ca.

Tips for Successful Meal Prep You’ve seen it on blogs, Instagram or from your most-fit friends, but you’re not exactly sure how to meal prep for yourself. Here are some helpful tips for beginners on how to meal prep with success: BUY IN BULK If you’re preparing a bunch of meals at once, it only makes sense to save money on buying a lot of food at once. Beef or chicken for example are much more affordable in bulk, and have some lasting power in the fridge once they are cooked. Keep in mind any other foods you can freeze for the near future, like vegetables or frozen fruit, and of course the usual staples like rice or noodles, which can easily be found in an upgraded size. PICK YOUR FAVOURITES If you’re going to make five of everything, it should probably be something you love or at least enjoy semi-often. Don’t run it into the ground, but if you don’t mind eating healthy wraps or a stir-fry, better to make those rather than a plain, quinoa salad. Making sure you actually enjoy the food you’re preparing will be one of the biggest factors in sticking to your prepared meals. Try to keep it simple and have fun by adding your own touch whenever you see fit. Spices, sauces and different sides can transform meals in way that makes things a lot more manageable. But, if we’re being healthy, go easy on the sauce, boss!
26 www.onthego.to
BE PREPARED (WITH CONTAINERS) If you’re prepping for the whole week, you better believe you’re going to need reusable containers. If you don’t want all that space taken up; tin foil or parchment paper can be a simple substitute, but is less likely to lock in freshness. As well, you may want to think about a small cooler or insulated bag to keep your food cold/hot, and fresh-tasting overall, especially if you’re on-the-go. REWARD YOURSELF While the whole point of meal prep is to maintain a healthy diet and save some money, don’t forget to give yourself breaks in the interim. Maybe it’s a fruit cup, soda or pudding; either way, an added treat here and there can put a stop to the ‘microwave, eat and repeat’ schedule you’re likely getting used to, and having something to look forward to is great motivation to stick to your plan.

s you look around your home are you able to spot the dangers? Do you know what things might be poisonous? Some products that are commonly used in our homes have a picture of a skull and crossbones on the label telling us the contents of the container may cause harm when swallowed. There are, however, hidden hazards lurking about that we might not even think of. The Ontario Poison Centre (OPC) receives calls daily about people of all ages who have been unintentionally exposed to something potentially harmful. Medications including prescription, over-the-counter and natural or herbal remedies, can be a major concern. Cannabis products, when consumed by the wrong person, can pose a significant danger as well. Always keep your medication locked up tight when young children are in the home.
If you are concerned that someone has gotten into something that might be harmful, call the OPC right away. The OPC is a toll-free service that provides expert advice 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. WCM’S RETURN TO BAY STREET Relaunching Careers. Retaining top female talent in Canadian capital markets since 2010.
I
n the quest for top talent, the financial industry recognizes that there is an underutilized pool of highly skilled potential talent that has stepped temporarily away from their careers to raise families and another in new Canadians who bring unrealized, extraordinary experience. Accordingly, in 2010, major Canadian financial institutions joined forces with WCM to launch Return to Bay Street, a returnship program for women looking to relaunch their careers in finance. Now in its tenth consecutive year, to date this program has facilitated the relaunch of 63 senior professional women’s careers in capital markets. Of these recipients, 76% remain in the industry,

THE JOURNEY BEGAN WITH A VISION… The New Haven Funeral Centre opened the doors of their 30,000 sq. ft. facility on November 13, 2017. A modern boutique style facility, the centre has 4 visitation suites, a large chapel, and reception/repass room that caters to many types of authentic cuisine.
T
he funeral centre was opened to fill a gap in the market. Long time classmates and friends, Shelley Challenger and Shari Yearwood, always had dreams of opening their own funeral establishment. As fate would have it at the time, the two were unsuccessful in seeing their dream come true and eventually life took them in different directions. Shelley stayed in the industry and became the first black woman in Canada to manage a funeral home. Shari moved on and entered the world of marketing in the telecommunications field. Throughout the years Shelley Challenger became a household name in funeral service to various cultural communities. Her ability to navigate families through even the most difficult losses, with grace, always served as a place of comfort to many, and many took notice. Shari, navigated her way through the corporate telecommunications world managing large marketing and branding projects across the country. Moving through life in separate careers, while still close on a personal level, the two 40 www.onthego.to

had no idea fate would bring what was once a dream, a reality. The vision of a church overseer coupled with a deep admiration for Shelley is what led to the inception of New Haven. The opportunity to partner and lead Canada’s largest Christian, black-owned facility was finally coming to fruition. Dreams were coming true and so was history.

THE TRUTH ABOUT HOMELESS PEOPLE AND THEIR PETS Homeless people would rather sleep on the street with their pets than go into a shelter without them.
A
s you walk through the city, you might pass someone who is living on the street and notice that they have a pet with them. And you wonder, “Why do they need a pet? How do they even care for them?” Here are some facts about homeless people and their pets. Why do homeless people have pets? People who experience homelessness are often disconnected from family and friends. Having a pet to provide companionship, protection, and love can make all the difference to someone who is in crisis and has nowhere else to turn. Can homeless people take care of their pets? Homeless pet owners love their furry companions and will always find ways to provide for them. They are no different than people who are housed — they take good care of their pets, show them affection, and treat them as family. What are the challenges for homeless pet owners? Having a pet is often a barrier for people needing to find shelter or housing. In many cases, people are forced to choose between a roof over their head or staying on the street with their pet. Most choose the latter.

Benefits of Buying Local Our whole lives we’ve been told “buying local is better,” but why? With a global economy and folks in all corners of the world needing goods, services and a reliable supply chain, are we really benefiting ourselves more than others?
T
he answers are more convincing than you think. By buying locally, we can reduce environmental impacts drastically. Not only does supporting the local economy mean less need for diesel-trucks and large ships, but it also ensures products are produced sustainably, using environmental regulations we are more familiar with and trusting of. This even extends to less waste from less packaging and physical shipping. As well, supporting a local economy creates a bigger impact around you that you can tangibly see, touch and taste. Local food tastes fresher, and putting money into local businesses creates more jobs, which turns into more tax money injected into your town or city. If there is no need to import labour or goods, profits and wages naturally increase, creating a better quality of life for friends, family and community members. This can spur innovation and product choice; when businesses are seeing a greater generation of income, they are able to flesh out more products and ideas that can both service the community (providing choice) and create jobs. When food is locally sourced, you actually know where your products are coming 48 www.onthego.to
from. You’re able to see what you are buying and know who is making it. This is paramount in terms of healthy preparation and ethical killing of animal products. It is far less likely that there will be a need for preservatives or other harmful additives when food products are farm-to-table. Studies have argued that entrepreneurial efficacy and a desire for an efficient community can create a problem-solving spirit that addresses local, public health problems quickly. In short, not only can buying local generate jobs and money, it also creates less of an environmental impact while encouraging a healthier community. It’s never too late to get to know your local business owners and contribute to your municipality!

My Kind of Beer with Chris Goddard
ONTARIO HOP GROWING
I
recently had the pleasure to be a beer judge for the 2020 Great Ontario Hopped Craft Beer Competition (ONHops BrewOff for short) in Niagara Falls as part of the Ontario Fruit and Vegetable Convention. The thing that makes this competition unique is that it pairs a local Ontario brewery with a local Ontario hop grower. After the teams have been matched, they are each tasked with brewing the same style of beer. The finished results are brought to the competition to compete “head to head” in a winner-take-all battle. This competition was created by the Ontario Hop Grower’s Association in 2012 to help celebrate the rebirth of Ontario hop growing and the amazing brewers who use them. “Re-birth of Ontario hop growing,” you are thinking, “I didn’t even know we grew hops in Ontario.” Up until recently the hop industry in Ontario was quite small, but back in the 1800s and early 1900s hop growing was a going concern here in Ontario. As Europeans flooded to the new world, they brought with them their crops and their thirst for beer. The latitude of Ontario provided the perfect climate for hops and the soil in certain regions provided the hops with the drainage and nutrients that they loved. This led to not only a boom in hop growing but also in beer production – but this boom wouldn’t last. There were a handful of things that led to the collapse of hop growing in Ontario: US tariffs on the import of hops (and barley for that fact), the spread of downy mildew exacerbated by Ontario’s humid summers, and most importantly — Prohibition!
60 www.onthego.to
Twitter: @Chris__Goddard (2 underscores) • Email: chris@craftbrandco.com.
Prohibition in Canada (1916–1927) dealt the first blow but when prohibition in the USA (1920–1933) closed the border for the export of beer, the industry was dealt its final blow. Many of the hop fields were plowed under and replaced with grape growing for wine production as wine could still be consumed for religious ceremonies and exported to the USA. It wasn’t until the renaissance of craft beer in Ontario in the early 2000s that farmers turned their hands back to hop growing. Which brings us back to Niagara and the ONHops BrewOff competition and the daunting row of nine (of the 18) Imperial IPA’s sitting in front of me to judge — all featuring delicious Ontario-grown hops. We used the Beer Judge Certificate Program (BJCP) guidelines as our measuring stick for the beers which makes things both easier and harder because there is a strict style definition and set of parameters that guide our palette. Meaning that the beer not only has to be great; it must be great and definitive of its style as well, which makes this quite difficult. Almost all the beers were delicious to drink but not very many of them stuck close to the style guidelines which meant that some ultimately didn’t score well. In the end, after all of the glasses had been downed and the scores tallied, Toronto’s own Great Lakes Brewing and Eden, Ontario’s VQH Farms came out on top with their delicious Farmer Strong Imperial IPA. And what did I do after judging all those beers? I went for another beer of course!

THINKING OF BUYING A CAR ONLINE? Learn to Recognize the Signs of a Scam! Darren Fleming was searching for his dream car online when he came across a great deal for a vintage 1977 Porsche 911 Targa posted on a popular online automotive marketplace.
H
e contacted the seller right away who responded with an interesting story! The seller claimed he had retired and moved to Germany leaving his Porsche in storage in Saskatchewan with a company called ODLE. The cost of the car was $21,930 and the seller asked Darren to wire transfer the money to ODLE who would hold the money “in escrow” and ship the car to Darren in Saint John where he resided. Darren would then have five days to inspect and accept the car. If he didn’t like it — he’d get a full refund and the seller would eat the shipping costs.
that is happening on online market-places today. According to Terry O’Keefe, OMVIC’s Director of Communications, “These scams are sophisticated. They lure potential victims with desirable vehicles usually priced below market value; and there’s always a reason why you can’t actually go and see the vehicle in person — the seller has moved and left it in storage or it’s at a dealership in the U.S. that is too far to travel to. The reality is, despite the guarantees and fancy websites and online testimonials, the seller and car are usually fictitious”.
Darren fell in love with the car and the deal. He felt the promise of his money being held in escrow provided a measure of safety and the professionalism of ODLE’s website gave him comfort that he was dealing with a legitimate company — that was until he read the fraud alert issued by OMVIC, Ontario’s vehicle sales regulator. Immediately after reading about online scams on OMVIC’s website, red flags became very apparent. “I was ready to send the money — that warning saved me from getting ripped off”.
Signs You May be Dealing with an Online Scam Artist When buying a vehicle online, OMVIC reminds consumers to remain vigilant and protect themselves by looking out for some of the telltale signs of a scam:
