Good Morning urban jungle dwellers. Welcome to the glorious month of May. As spring fades and summer finally kicks in to gear, the city is awakening from its long slumber and we are seizing the elongated days, utilising every second to explore everything this invigorating town has to offer. It’s time to dig out your summer wardrobe, brave the still-slightly-chilly breeze and head up to a sunny rooftop to watch the world go by over an ice cold beer or two. When the sun shines, Londoners smile and suddenly everything looks a little brighter. New ideas are hatched, opportunities are born and the scene is set for a brand new love affair to begin. Our May issue is packed with a sense of summer. We indulge in Udderlicious’ homemade ice cream, grill DJ Eats Everything about his upcoming summer plans and brighten up our wardrobe with eccentric accessories from 40 Colori. We stumble upon the gourmand at La Polenteria and wet our whistles with delicious homemade beer. And, as always we wanted to let you know how much we love you guys. “En Mai, fais ce qu’il te plaît !” Hunt & Déca

LE BON ACCESSORY Text Benjamin Harvey Pictures Zak Dimitrov

Life In Technicolor With 40 Colori The ceremonious pomp and splendour that an accessory can add to an outfit are definitely new. Oddly, the bow tie, for instance, originates from functional clothing worn during the Roman period. At this time, orators would wear neckcloths, ensuring they kept their vocal chords warm so as to optimise their ability to make speeches. Early neckcloths also offered a form of protection to soldiers, who’d wrap them tight about the neck so they could provide a barrier against sword thrusts.

40 Colori continues to break

through the world of men’s accessories. Today, the brand is constantly evolving. Since opening its first boutique on Cheshire Street, just off Brick Lane, they have been able to temper its rich heritage with London’s resident creatives. A neat evolution of the brand would have them branch out from their previously male dominated offering, presenting a collection of female socks. In-line with their natural, colourconscious approach, they use materials like bamboo to render the softest of socks. Simplicity is key at 40 Colori but that is not to say that the accessories themselves are easily overlooked. Their approach is focused on attention to detail and artistry; anyone that wears their pieces would be sure to feel like their outfits are complete, with a touch of class. Hues of pink and blue, or purple and green, light and dark, fine and soft, finery at its absolute finest.

Waste Not Want Not Every year almost one third of all food produced across the globe is wasted. In Britain alone, 15 million tonnes of food is wasted annually. The Food & Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations tells us that annually, consumers in industrialised countries waste as much food as the entire amount that is produced in sub-Saharan Africa. While almost 800 million people across the globe are suffering from hunger, the disparity is baffling.

LE BON BRUNCH Text The Team

How do you like your eggs in the morning? We know that finding a new place for brunch is close to impossible and every Sunday the one question that resonates is “Where to go for brunch?”. Luckily, we’ve tried pretty much all the options across the city, so here are 5 suggestions for an unparalleled experience.

Barge House Barge House stands out amongst the myriad of places to eat and drink. Their “Breakfast in Bread” brunch consists of four options to choose from, but we highly recommend the bespoke sourdough loaf stuffed with smoked salmon, crème fraiche, spinach, leeks, oyster mushrooms, topped with an egg and heaped with melted cheese. Er. Mah. Gerd. This heavenly, melty, gooey goodness really does taste as good as it sounds. Luckily you can walk off your inevitably humongous food baby with a stroll along the beautiful towpath, which takes you past Victoria Park, Broadway Market, and Camden Lock.

Saturdays and Sundays 10 am to 4 pm The Barge House, 46a De Beauvoir Crescent, N1 5RY

Bourne & Hollingsworth Buildings This one is a Modern all-day Brasserie and Bar in Clerkenwell. You’ll enjoy their famous cocktails, in a 70-cover restaurant complete with a greenhouse, a relaxed café area as well as characterful private rooms. Try the Huevos Benedictos (chorizo, avocado, béarnaise sauce) and crispy potato hash with a fried duck egg or poached hen’s egg. The bar has pitchers and pitchers of Bloody Mary’s and Bellini’s for a quick replenishment.

Saturdays and Sundays 10 am to 4 pm 42 Northampton Road, Clerkenwell, EC1R 0HU 24

Lima Floral Lima Floral is the chilled ‘little sister’ of the Michelin-starred restaurant Lima. With its £18 brunch menu, you will embark on a terrific discovery of the Peruvian ingredients and cuisine way beyond the usual ceviches. Add 4 glasses of prosecco at a bargain of £10 and you’re set. We had the quinoa porridge, and trust us, porridge will never be the same again! The yoghurt with maca root, bee pollen and eucalyptus will make your tongue tango under this incredible burst of flavours.

Saturdays and Sundays 10:30 am to 3:30 pm 14 Garrick St, WC2E 9BJ

Pavilion Cafe The Pavilion Cafe is rammed for a reason: tables overlooking the sparkling Victoria Park lake, brunch fit for royalty, and damn good coffee. The food is sourced ethically and the portions are the size of a small child, just about managing to fit on the plate. Homemade baked-beans are a highlight: the skin still clinging on, and soaked in a delicious herby tomato sauce – a far cry from its tinned cousin! But everything here is lovingly made; from the beautifully presented homemade cakes, and the freshly juiced organic smoothies, to the glowing, golden gloriousness of the hollandaise sauce.

Open daily 8 am to 3 pm The Pavilion Café, Victoria Park, E9 7DE

Opso From Tsoureki brioche and pancakes to Greek Eggs Benedict (served on Greek bread with Greek yoghurt hollandaise) and Souvlaki, Opso is an interesting alternative to your traditional brunch and Full English Breakfast. If you’re feeling a bit exotic definitely try this cute Greek restaurant on a sunny Saturday in Marylebone. You’ll be setting good vibes for the rest of the day.

Saturdays and Sundays 10 am to 5 pm 10 Paddington St, London W1U 5QL 25

LE BON CONCEPT Text Alicia Streijffert Pictures Aida

Spring & Rain at Aida Ever wandered around the streets of Shoreditch on a spring day, dress flowing with each step you take, sunglasses on, sun shining so bright you’re fearing it might burn your retina and force you to live the life of the blind forever? Of course not, because spring in London is a mere extension of a never-ending grey, wet and cold winter. And thus, you step into concept store Aida and the first thing you see, conveniently positioned by the doors, are raincoats.

LE BON QUIZ Text Hunt & Déca Illustrations Sally Nixon

What Kind of Woman Are You? Sally Nixon’s evocative yet refreshing illustrations show what women get up to when nobody is watching. The Le Bonbon team were fascinated by her work, and used it as a platform for debate: where should we be brushing our teeth, how often should we shave our legs and should we be sucking in our stomachs? So, we created a little quiz, not to cause offence or form sexist opinions, but just for fun! So ladies and gents, it’s time to find out what kind of woman you are…
