Introducing Mrs Press...

Soft white satins and playful lace indulge in an innocent game of hide and seek where girlish bows compete with the edgy undertones of studded leather and hardened pinks in unconcerned casual shapes. Modern zips of coloured cheekiness laugh defiantly at overtly cheerful vintage earrings completing the collage of childish notions and alluring scepticism.

By Rhiannon Bulley She dances horizontally amongst the white pillars of stoic history and the everchanging present, kicking her heels up in to the sky from which she fell in all her majestic elegance. She is a love song of glorified romance with dark renegade undertones. She beats to the sound of her own marching band drum tripping the light fantastic with every step she takes in her rainbow of colours. She emanates masculine assertion but remains loyal to her refined spirit of eternal feminine elegance. She is the ultimate maximalist. Allowing her noisy surfaces of clothing to echo an inimitable tune of style. She weaves a vision of magic everywhere she goes.

S

ummer is a reflection of the sunlights rainbow of colours from dawn to dusk. It is a dance of sentimental optimism and a tale of heart rendering sacrifice. It is the chic armour of fearless style icons of the past spliced with the effervescent notions of childhood dreams. It is a fortified Parisian romance nostalgic for the past but propelling us into the future with apparitions of real life magic. Summer conjures visions of whimsical creatures with frills and bows from head to toe and opulent fairies with flowers in their hair. Characteristic leather numbers flirt with danger and whisper of forceful bravery whilst devilish hemlines tantalise with their nonchalant spirit. Myriads of mismatched and forbidden colour blocking become a dominant wardrobe theme. Whoever said red and pink should never be worn together is living in the past. Summer is all about cascading pastels that graduate from and conflict with each other in an animated harmony. Imaginative designers confound this Summer with Saint Augestine’s sophisticated strength and The Last Romantic’s fragile feminine elegance framing each other in unified style. Jade Michelle and Hannah Macleod sit happily on the fence creating their own powerful visions of contrast from Jades love heart dresses and strong sequined

pieces to Hannah’s nautical notions and girlish nostalgia. Meanwhile Mrs. Press remains as simple and elegant in her playfully traditional style as Aje does in their ostentatious anarchy of a sweetheart’s rebellion. They are complimented by layers of exuberant accessories that impel an outfit’s embellishment to new uncontrolled heights. Be bold, bright and brilliant is the resounding message right now. This Summer, She, is a high-spirited femme fatale. She is a tableau vivant of the changing beauty of nature, a reflection of every shade of the sun’s magnificent limelight and a blooming flower of irrepressible passion. She is a living tale of the immortal allure of romance and the nonchalant spontaneity of sovereign freedom. She is a real life manifestation of the elusive magic of fairytales where the journey of constant magic is far more fulfilling than the happy ever-after. She floats above reality on her throne of surreal style. The only rule she abides by is to wear as many shades, shapes and textures of invigorated classic beauty as possible. She is a mass of contradictions unveiled in an exuberant maximalist exhibition of quintessential style. The sky is the limit and she exists amongst all its translucent rays of scintillating sunshine and silver linings in its clouds.

She is dramatic revelation of hopeless devotion in her vertical frills of once in a blue moon romance and sensationally oversized floral headwear. Artful canvases of spellbinding landscapes are crafted into her statement footwear. Her cascades of red hair rebelliously frolic amongst her graduating pinks and purples. She is a vision of highspirited collisions of colour spliced with immortal replicas of nature’s ephemeral beauty.

Confrontations of ruby red romance and black heartbreak stand opposed on either side of their geometrical boundaries with re-enforcing bows the colour of innocence and loves lost but not forgotten a top her head. She is a revelation of fortified romance.

A real life doll evocative of the evolution of the female identity discovers a landscape of beauty that reflects her curious spirit and eternal soul. Her scintillating bag reflects the glint of the water and invigorates a sense of buoyancy into the bow that adorns her tiny doll hat. She is at one with the beauty of nature and its constant invasions into her own stylistic choices.

Empowered with independence and self-assertion she dons a little black dress armed with masculine detailing and confidently aligns it with outwardly feminine lace. She pays homage to the androgynous nature of beauty layering men’s bow ties down her neck and pinning a blatant feminine version on her head. She is a tribute to the bold strength of feminine nature.

Inspired by the ruthless strength of style revolutionaries that lived before her she slithers into a leather-studded mini and boldly a straps a tutu to its waist charging ruthless strength with horizontal frills of charismatic charm. Her limbs are emblazoned with a rainbow of revolutionary vintage colour and futuristic visions of scintillating lands undiscovered. Her white hat and feather style earrings salute the goddesses of the sky as she spins unchallenged in her own landscape of extroverted beauty.

Her reflective dress of daring scintillation invigorates the sordid nature of black with dusty gold messages of hope, which meld into a dazzling commotion of unrefined feminine elegance. She hears the rhythm of her feet as the love hearts on her coloured heels tap out the summer beat of romance. Two fallen stars dance together in their effervescent armours of magnificence.

By Rhiannon Bulley The morning sun beckoned its rays tapping insistently on her window pleading with her to come out and play. She knew their game and the rainbow she wanted to paint under their penetrating glare. No matter the trials or trips in life the sun always made her want to dance again. The gloom of romances lost and songs left unsung had no place in her vivid wardrobe of life, for hers is a shield of optimism. The pink bows of her satin underwear hung dutifully from her waist to her hips. She donned a white tailored shirt that had belonged to a boy she knew some time ago and a pair of crimson glasses. She seized the navy grosgrain ribbon from the present an apologetically infatuated stranger had left at her door the day before, using it to tie her curls back from her face. She sat by her window in the blasting sun drinking her tea and reading the worn pages of her favourite childhood book. The program from the ballet the night before stared up at her from her chaotic table of papers and magazines and she danced her way to her antique armoire to begin her ornamentation. The day was brilliant and she would wear bows from head to toe. One in black lace to honour the mourning of the newly lonely souls in the world and one in white in memory of her grandmothers elegant femininity. She tied them disproportionately around her neck allowing their opposing messages to mingle around her shoulders. Effervescent memories of her childhood innocence emerged as she sealed the waist of her girlish dress with a large pink tulle belt finished in an oversized bow that dripped fantastical notions from her navel to her knee.

‘

She allowed their ephemeral beauty to creep over the rest of her form strapping a sparkly purple number to her wrist and fastening a matching pink number in her hair, which she finished off with a small rose pinned in it’s centre.

She began to feel braver and bolder with each flourishing addition to her silhouette.

’

Next she dons a pair of shoes and covers their metal clasps with mini plastic and diamante bow hair clips. She laughs at the stagnant beauty of these tiny-cemented forms and decides to mirror them in her hair reflecting her own immortal scintillation in this ever-changing world. She dots them throughout her curls, which remain contrastingly free in all their unrestrained spirit.

She began to feel braver and bolder with each flourishing addition to her silhouette. Each knot signified her brilliance and affirmed her divinity. Bedecked in bows she floats out into the sunlight deflecting its vibrant rays and spreading its hope with each laughing step of her day.

What will are wearing this summer? Comfortable clothing, that allows my skin to breath and Baggy cotton garments. What is your favourite summer trend? Definitely not thongs, the underwear or feet variety, why do this to yourself its not flattering and terribly uncomfortable. I don’t follow trends or even know what the latest ones are. Sorry if that was the whole point of the interview, I think people should think about life beyond trends, haha I sound so serious. I like trends that are relevant to the individual who is wearing them or items of clothing that mean something either a memory or tell a story. For example I have a pair of denim shorts that I found on the side of the road, they were jeans that I gave to my boyfriend he wore them for a year. Then I stole them back and cut them into shorts a few years ago, nothing beats them they are so comfortable! And they wear free and they have had a long hard life. What trends will you be relaying for spring summer 2009? My entire wardrobe will be making a second or possibly third or fourth appearance. Where can you be found this summer? In south India with my boyfriend sam. Where is your Favourite summer location? Anywhere that has clean water, fresh air and quality produce. I forgot to mention sun! What is your favourite summer memory? This is a hard question! I have so many memories of growing up in byron, summer was amazing there. Having all my friends walking distance or close by, just enjoying being alive and making the most of the summertime. Having bbq’s, watermelon fights, dress ups, drinking cheap booze, body boarding, fishing, making self saucing pudding with icecream, getting taken out to sea by rips, PING PONG, tennis, ridding bikes, going fishing, sandon river, sunbaking for hours, reading a novel a day. I love summer! What is your summer hand bag essential? Still Water, that has not been produced by coca cola. What is summer beauty tip for glowing skin? Stay hydrated, use hemp oil as sunscreen its spf15! Smile. Don’t be too afraid of the sun, its not going to make you old or give you skin cancer, as long as you eat a lot of anti oxidants and don’t abuse the sun or your body.

Introducing Jade Michelle...

By Rhiannon Bulley

W

alking the streets of Paris for the first time, her big blue eyes oogle the elegant women racing around in their little black dresses, they haunt the tea houses nibbling on coloured macaroons that reflect and repel the refined shadows cast by the their black attire. She stands mesmerized as a powerful creature in a black tailored suit races past her bright lips and dark eyes casting an alternate sense of allure onto her sophisticated apparel. Their mystery envelopes her and she knows that one day she will wear a brilliant veil of embellished black with a sugary macaroon of colour amongst it to accentuate the sparkle in her eye and reek havoc with the red of her lips. Le Magazine takes a visionary journey rich with nostalgia into our past revealing the enduring nature of the Little Black Dress from yesterday to today, with the historical statements of the Darnell Collection standing dissimilate alongside this summer’s distinctive numbers. In the early hours of the morning, somewhere on Fifth Avenue New York a taxi pulls up and a quixotic creature dressed all in black Givenchy except for her triple strand of pearls steps out of the car. On the other side of the world a few years before, the singing of a belle femme’s tune Coco haunts an underground French club. The singer seamstress is destined to change the world by swapping her bright costumes for tailored suits and black dresses with complimenting tweeds that will have women following in her revered footsteps of paired down elegance for all eternity. Back in America the admired American first lady stands demure yet strong beside John F.

Kennedy’s coffin in her armour of tailored black. Her signature dark glasses shield her eyes from the world as she mourns her husband in the traditional black of the Victorian widows. Her attire is of course a little more conspicuous in it’s detailing and less restrictive but none the less, captivating in its nature. Meanwhile a brave Princess in England steps out for the first time on her own after leaving her life of Royalty behind. The dress she has chosen to invigorate her new sense of freedom is a little black dress with a dangerously low backline that leaves a trail of awe behind her. Somewhere around this time another a young lady dons a sensuous and extravagant LBD designed by the Queens Couturier Norman Hartnell and returns home to find the still newly former Princess Diana sitting in her kitchen having a cup of tea with her flatmate. Another remarkable LBD leaves its mark. The dress in question belongs to Charlotte Smith, of the Darnell Collection, as do many other astounding Little Black Dresses that have left their mark in history and in The Little Black the personal wardrobes of Dress has proven women from the Victorian itself to be the era to the devilishly short micro bandage mystical ancient dresses of Herve Leger in the alchemist of style. nineties. can geniusally turn any LBD from the simple to the scintillating into a characteristic dress of radiance, like Charlotte’s very own Norman Hartnell. Such is the nature of the little black dress, which can constantly be redeemed with just a bow, belt or feather. Designers today continue to re-invent this staple item adding their own unique twist of embellishment or alternate cut. Charlotte’s treasured Jantzen 1920’s men’s bathing suit from the historical Darnell Collection has today become the silhouette of several bold cut out dresses and punchy playsuits. The evolutionary journey of the LBD is tireless in its stylish innovations. Its seams carve us into flattering versions of the women we admire and fills us with an inner sense of confidence that radiates from one side of the room to the other. It keeps us company from morning till night when worn with quintessential ballet flats and pearls, which are swapped for soaring heels and statement accessories as the sunsets.

The little black dress is still as revered as ever and has come to mean many things to many different women but most importantly it is the one item of clothing that has come to mean something to every individual woman, whether is it a nod of sacrifice, a statement of confidence and power or a daring deviation that celebrates our individual luminosity. Inky images of these enigmatic creatures in their characteristic little black dresses have ingrained themselves into our very beings and seeped through our veins allowing us to unlock the

What is your favourite summer trend? I’m loving the return of the summer pant-suit. Studio 54 lives on! Perfect for day at the beach with sandals and slip straight into heels for cocktails… Having said that, I always adore the nautical look every summer – navy and white or red and white strips are a favourite of mine every summer along with a neck scarf and a pair of shorty-shorts…. What trends will you be relaying for spring summer 2009? A girlfriend of mine has just started making parasols for the beach. Not only practical for our summer beach weather but so Gidget-cute. Think pom-poms and gingham designs. I can’t wait to get my hands on one and a 60’s inspired bikini and hit the beach… Where can you be found this summer? I’ve just recently moved from Avalon to the East-Side so this summer I will be at the park in Watsons Bay with my new puppy Coco, at Bondi Beach at my boyfriends pad or at a backyard barbeque that is kid-friendly so I can take my baby bambinos along! Where is your Favourite summer location? I love Mission Beach, Port Douglas, Fiji or Byron Bay. What is your favourite summer memory? What is your inspiration? My inspiration is quiet simple and that is being able to do what I loving doing and what my passion is in life while being lucky enough at the same time to make a living from. Where does your subject in art come from and how A lot of the time my subject in art comes from the things im surrounded by everyday. The last exhibition iv just had and the painting that’s just been selected in the Paddington Art prize was focused on the Circular Quay. That series of paintings and that particular painting was looking at the movement which was communicated by the mark making which reflected the busy lifestyle of living and working in the central business district and the older, historic end of the city. The way I went about working on this collection was spending a whole day down at Circular Quay with my camera and a sketch book trying to do as many drawings as possible spending maximum of 10 minutes on each drawing ‌reason for this is that when one is in a hurry trying to do such detailed drawings a time limit helps capture the energy and movement in the scene rather then details and the camera help me refine the details in the final painting because it take me back to the scene without being there. What is the favourite medium and why? Have to say my favorite medium would have to be oils on linen. Reason being is that oil paints contain the best genuine artists’ pigments which help me enhance natural beauty and luminosity in my paintings exposing the rich undertones rather than just heavy, dull colours and because they are oils I can come back to the painting several days after I have worked on it and still change and move paint around on the canvas because the paint is still wet. With my painting surfaces I prefer the raw natural linen because of its natural warm grey surface I find that light colours really stand out and make an impact in the my paintings. Where can you be found this summer? Have to say either Bondi beach or my studio What is your favourite summer memory? Has to be 2006 where I spent my summer in Europe down on the coast of Croatia. I was there for 6 weeks taking in all the historical architecture and the coast line while drawing and enjoy the local drinks and food while meeting locals.

What body of work are you currently working on? At the moment I’m working on 2 projects. My first project is a portrait for the Archibald Prize with a well know individual in today’s media. The other project is a commission for a client where the painting will be 3.2 metres long by 1.7 metres in height so what better way to hang a painting that reflects the Sydney Harbor then a 7 metre long wall with high ceiling that over looks the harbor it self. What are your top 5 must haves for summer? Ray bans, iphone, shorts, singlet & sandals. What do you love most about summer? Warm days and nights where I can spend most of my spare time down by the beach. What is something that most people wouldn’t know about you? If I told you then they’d know.

What are we wearing this summer? Still holding onto the 80’s revival: cropped tops, tight mini dresses, micro shorts. 70’s influence: floral dresses/ mix-match fabrications ie floral meets graphic, Scarily enough the more fashion adventurous might step out in a double denim combo… Cut-out dresses and tops…anything to expose a little extra bronzed flesh, studs to add a little toughness. Poolside and beach side: there will be a some odd tummy tan-lines with the highwaisted bikini bottom being a summer must have. What is your favourite summer trend? It’s always refreshing to see the florals, whites and bare legs come out in the summer time…even the most tomboy of girls can’t help but want to feel a little feminine. Love a beaten up army boot with men’s shorts too. Anything a little out of the ordinary. What trends will you be relaying for spring summer 2009? It is always difficult for any one of the three of us to get out of black and that doesn’t seem to change from season to season unfortunately…not really a trend but a definitely a realism! I love white lace and ripped faded denim in the summertime though, Anita Pallenberg-esque wide brimmed hats, big shades and biker boots. Where can you be found this summer? In our fave summertime spot which happens to be home for all three of us…the Sunshine Coast, the Sunshine State! Where is your Favourite summer location? We’re fortunate in that our work takes us between Sydney, Bali and Noosa so we basically live in eternal summertime…don’t be jealous though, the wet season in Bali is definitely nothing to aspire to, if you aren’t dripping from rain you are dripping from sweat..really not very ladylike! What is your favourite summer memory? Not so much an individual memory but more like a collection of snippets of visions, sounds, smells and textures: the feel of the sand between your toes, the cold sweetness of icecream on your lips after hours baking in the sun, the smell of salt mixed with coconut oil, the sound of chilled out tunes mixed with children’s shrieks and splashes of water, the crashing of waves against the shorline, the tinkle of ice against a glass and the blissful taste of pims by the pool, seafood, cocktails…the list is endless What is your summer hand bag essential? Paw paw cream…it fixes everything!

What will are wearing this summer? Accessaries are a big part of this summers fashion, big bold and fabulous!!! Earrings. Belts and shoes loving the tribal look. (BUT DON’T OVER DO IT.) EXP: A great necklace doesn’t need a huge pear of earings!! What is your favourite summer trend? That’s always hard to define for me, I love fashion so much, but my mood changes & there always some great new look. What trends will you be relaying for spring summer 2009? It will be a season high in bright colours, a lot of fluorescents. I think after winter everyone’s mood swings towards bright beautiful colours and that’s what I’ll b relaying. Where can you be found this summer? Bondi is always a fav, great cafes, shopping, people and the beach, but also I like to get away from it all. Where is your Favourite summer location? A holiday would be nice some where quite and tropical like Vanuatu or Bali … maybe! What is your favourite summer memory? Last year in NYC I spent 3 months there. Loved every minute. Made some great lifelong friends did some awesome shows & shoots. Who wouldn’t love the Hamptons!! I can’t wait to go back! NY was a great experience. What is your summer hand bag essential? Lucas Pawpaw Ointment a must. Laura Mercier cover. Mascara Great Lash by Maybelline Blackest Black!!! My iphone & my passport. What is summer beauty tip for glowing skin? A good workout helps heaps, a good exfoliate Clinique 7 day gentle exfoliating scrub & toner. Always wear at least a light sunscreen.

What trends will you be relaying for spring summer 2009? I love the power of accessories, especially sunglasses. My favourite pair right now, have a straight gold frame with angular lenses. Where is your Favourite summer location? I try have a (European) Summer every two years. I split my time between the Amalfi Coast, which is where my family come from and the Greek Islands. I just love Mykonos, the island offers so much. They both hold lots of great memories, so I love going back whenever I get the chance. What is your favourite summer memory? Anything that involves lying on white sand, near crystal clear waters, with a cocktail in my hand and no emails or phone calls to interrupt me. What is your summer man- bag essential? In my ‘Manzoni ‘manbag are a couple of summer essentials. My iphone – it allows me to work anywhere away from the office, and it also carries all my music. Sunglasses – just like my Amex, I don’t leave home without them.

Introducing Saint Augustine Academy...

How do you think fashion history relates to fashion today and what are we wearing? Really, it is all about re-interpretation. Construction, draping, tailoring, padding, embroidering, pleating, boning and stitching – it has all been done before beginning with draped furs and hides worn by cavemen. Many of the most influential and successful designers today understand how fashion history has evolved and how it has adapted to represent civilizations as they became more sophisticated. We have the exciting opportunity of being able to study past silhouettes and construction techniques and combine them with new technology – fabrics, manufacturing and marketing. Fashion, influenced by history yet adapted to our 21st century lifestyle, will ensure evolving and dynamic trends for the future. What is one of your favourite items from the collection: There are 16 garments sewn by hand by Kate Ludwig, an Edwardian seamstress from Pennsylvania. When she became engaged in 1910, she spent the next year cutting, sewing and embroidering evening dresses, day ensembles, her petticoats and overcoats for her trousseau. One month before her wedding she received a letter from her fiancÊ saying he had married someone else. Devastated, Kate

packed away her trousseau in a trunk and never saw any of the garments again. Of these 16 garments, my favourite is a brown corded silk skirt ensemble. It is lined in pale blue silk and the tiniest glass beads line the bodice and cuffs of the matching blouse and jacket. I find the detail extraordinary and poignant – it was an era when people had time to do things by hand. What is your favourite period in fashion history? Late Georgian into the Regency period. I am sure I am swayed by movies like Pride and Prejudice, but I love the delicate femininity seen in diaphanous silk chiffon dresses, delicately beaded, with flattering high waists and elegantly seductive décolletages. And of course, Mr. Darcey, dressed in his spiffy, tailored waistcoats and breeches is a great look too. What period do you think was the most influential? The 16th century Tudor period. For women, the figure was artificially shaped by whale-boned corsets, farthingales (known as crinolines in the 19th c), rolled padding – all introduced by Catherine of Aragon who was King Henry Vlll’s first wife. Of course, corsets were in and out of fashion up until the end of the 19th century and were reintroduced in the 50s with Dior and his tailored silhouettes. The hoop skirt effect also has been popular on and off for the past 500 years and remains an important design feature for the modern bridal industry. What items from the Darnell Collection would you most like to see on girls today? Long, slender 70s hostess gowns. I am a bit tired of seeing unbelievably short dresses on girls when they go out on the town. Slender gowns worn by hostesses in the 70s when they gave casual evening parties are wonderfully elegant. They can be slit right up the side of the leg or cinched in by a wide belt for an elegant waist or just left straight so the fabric and the pattern on the fabric becomes a feature. What is your best style advice? Basically, be honest with yourself and wear a fashion style that suits your shape. I love 50s dresses, but because I have a short waist and I am not overly tall, the cinched waist and full skirt makes me look like a bubble. My body shape suits 20s, 70s and especially the tailored 80s styles. Sometimes, as hard as it is, accept the shape you have and wear styles which flatter you. If you are stylish you look sexy. If you are comfortable with what you are wearing you exude confidence. What is your best accessorizing advice? A small, elegant clutch for evening is essential. Even though most of us have enormous bags in which we tote around everything from large cosmetic bags to keyrings bulging with keys during the day, our evening bag should contain just a few essential items. It looks so much neater. Where will you be found this summer? In my office at ESMOD Australia (a French fashion school in Surry Hills) planning my 2010 fashion exhibition schedule.

What makes a great hat? A great hat is one that is made just for you ! - one that enhances your face and your unique style. To be worn elegantly and with pride. A great hat is one that is made in the traditional way by a milliner. A headpiece (I dislike the word fascinator!) is not hat. What are your wardrobe recommendations for the spring racing carnival? A smart, elegant dress - not too revealing, in colours and a style that suits you. Open-toed shoes - sexy yet comfortable (remember it is a

long day out at the races!) Top it off with a fabulous hat, great jewellery and a handbag. Your handbag should be large enough to hold your sunglasses, race book, money, phone, keys and touch up makeup.! Take a shawl or light jacket as it cools down by the end of the day. Please don’t wear your shiny nightclub dresses to the races. What hat shapes and embellishments are going to be prominent this season? I’m creating small elegant hats inspired from the 1940’s and1950’s. Flowers are still around and of course feathers…I’ve seen a little bit of sparkle coming thru in vintage style brooches. I make most of my trims, and never repeat a design, so I always design something unique and interesting for my clients. How should a hat be worn? A hat should be worn forward on the head, over the eyebrow and slightly tilted to give an alluring look! Never wear a hat on the back of your head unless it is a 1960’s pill box. A headpiece should be worn on the side or slightly forward. How should we co-ordinate a hat with our outfit to make the ensemble standout? Your hat, shoes and handbag should match in colour and style. Tone your dress in with these accessories. If you are confused about what to wear, you can’t go past the ever dependable black and white. It always looks stylish. What advice would you give for working a hat into an everyday outfit? If you want to stay out of the sun, a really good quality, neutral sun hat is the best. A hat that tones in with all your summer outfits and is smart enough to wear out everyday. A couple of funky little felt hats will keep your head warm in winter and if looked after, will last for years What is your greatest racing memory? Forget the horses!...2 of my clients won 1st and 2nd in Fashions on the Field on the same day! Where will you be found this summer? This is the busiest time of the year so I give myself the day off on Saturdays to go to the Spring Carnival at Randwick Racecourse. I catch up with friends and support my clients in Fashions on the Field. After Melbourne Cup, and over summer it is my time to plan my designs for the Autumn Carnival whilst sitting on the beach. Hope to see you out at the races…. Wendi
