A weekend trip from Lee County is guaranteed to create a fun summer memory with the kids

By Mandy Carter

In between summer camps, holiday cook-outs and weekends at the beach, you can plan some unique road trips to guarantee family fun. You do not have to commit to a week-long vacation or expensive plane tickets in order to have a memorable vacation. Rise early on a Saturday, take a drive, explore a new area for two days and be back home in time for a good night’s sleep before work on Monday with a Florida road trip from Lee County. Whether you are driving to the East Coast or exploring Central Florida, there are so many fun activities within a few hours of our county.

Take a trip to Central Florida

Head to Central Florida one weekend to see Bok Tower Gardens and explore LEGOLAND. This is a perfect weekend for families with young children. No rush to get up early on this trip, you are only a two-hour drive

away from Bok Tower Gardens. Pack a picnic lunch before you leave to enjoy at the garden. Your kids will have a blast exploring the creative outdoor stations of Hammock Hollow, while you will love the beauty and history of the Bok Tower. Then take a short drive to Spook Hill to shock your kids by your car defying gravity as it rolls up hill. Then it will be time to go check into the new LEGOLAND Beach Retreat hotel. Kids love to be immersed in LEGOS. Take a night splash in the LEGO themed pool before turning in for the night. Enjoy a free breakfast at the Legoland hotel before spending the day at the theme park designed with young kids in mind. If you have an extra day, you can add on a unique animal encounter at Safari Wilderness Ranch. To see how my family enjoyed this mini-vacation visit: acupful.com/central-florida-vacation So many quick family getaways within driving distance of Lee County To plan a great family trip like the

one above, just find family-friendly attractions within a three to four hour drive. There are so many possibilities from the Space Coast to

The Keys. Plan to add a few weekend road trips to your summer for memories the kids will talk about for years to come.

The Foundation for Lee County Public Schools surprised six Lee County educators in their classrooms on March 10 and presented them with the prestigious Golden Apple Teacher Award. Golden Apple major sponsors and selection committee members joined the school administrators and foundation board members in recognizing teachers who represent outstanding performance in their profession. The 2017 Golden Apple Teacher Award recipients are: Dr. Jesse Bryson – Fort Myers High, Patty Gair – Cypress Lake High School Center for the Arts, Vanessa Lynch – Harns Marsh Middle, Richard Romano – North Fort Myers Academy for the Arts, Milagros Sowers – East Lee County High and Mariah Washington – Bayshore Elementary.

APRIL 2017

The Golden Apple recipients are chosen after going through an extensive selection process which began in September with a community-wide invitation to nominate teachers deserving of special recognition. The final six teachers were selected after completing a three-step process that included a blind comprehensive application, observation of their classroom teaching skills, and personal interviews by the Golden Apple Selection Committee. Recipients will be honored at the Golden Apple Teacher Recognition Banquet, a black-tie affair held at Hyatt Regency Coconut Point on Friday, April 7. The banquet will be broadcast on NBC2 on Sunday, April 9 at 7 p.m. Tickets for the Golden Apple Banquet can be purchased for $160 by contacting the foundation office at 239-337-0433.

The Foundation for Lee County Public Schools invites you to tune into NBC2 on Saturday, April 4 from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. for the A-Team Challenge quarter finals match. Thirty-three high schools from six Southwest Florida counties have been competing in the A-Team Challenge, a single-elimination academic competition developed by The Foundation and NBC2. Quarter finals, semi finals and championship games are broadcast during prime time on NBC2. Quarter finals – April 1 – 12:30 - 2:30 p.m. Semifinals – April 9 – Noon – 1 p.m. Championship – April 16 – Noon – 1 p.m. Modeled after Jeopardy, a team of high school students from each school competes with each other, answering questions under the categories of science, math, arts and humanities, language arts, social studies, and general knowledge. Both public and private schools are invited to compete, with each participating school entering four team players and four team alternates. The champion team receives a traveling trophy for their school and individual trophies for each player. The purpose of the A-Team Challenge is to encourage, promote and spotlight academic achievement and excellence among area high school students. “When you watch these students compete, you will be amazed by their intelligence,” says Marshall T. Bower, president & CEO of The Foundation for Lee County Public Schools. “These are the faces that represent our future workforce and the future looks bright!” Filmed and produced within the Lee County School District’s Communications & Production Department, the A-Team Challenge is the only televised high school academic competition in Florida on a national affiliate. The production has enabled The Foundation to expand its curriculum by offering students interested in audio and television production an opportunity to work first hand with Lee County School District and NBC2 producers. All of the games will be broadcast on Comcast and the Lee County School District at a later date. NBC2 chief meteorologist Robert Van Winkle hosts all of the team matches and has been an integral part of the show.

Lily pads provide rolling perch for pediatric patients

There’s not a frog in sight, but the lily pads at Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida are often occupied by special guests— pediatric patients who need to get from place to place. The wooden lily pads provide a place for patients to rest as they roll down the hallway on the way to a medical test or back to their room. Sisters Marisa and Jessica Sauer are in the process of creating more than 80 lily pads for Golisano patients when the new facility opens this spring. “Most people don’t know we’re doing this,” Marisa Sauer says. “Jessica and I have decided to take on the challenge of creating a large number of lily pads because we know the effects of a project like this in our community. We have worked directly with Sherwin Williams and Raymond Lumber of North Fort Myers and have received donations in full. We also received a grant from the Center for Environmental and Sustainability Education at Florida Gulf Coast University.” The idea originated with a 17-year-old cancer patient in Auburn, Wash. Nick Konkler fought cancer his entire life and knew the challenges of being a young patient in a hospital setting. He had the idea of building a decorative wooden platform to place on the bottom of IV

poles for kids to have a safe place to sit as they were walked around the hospital while connected to their treatment. He began by creating a lily pad for himself in his wood shop class. Nick died in February 2015 and was unable to bring his idea to a broader audience, but his classmates and teacher have spread the word, and the pattern, on the Internet. “We were eager to get involved in any way that we could, and our first thought initially jumped to our hometown,” Marisa says. The sisters are eager to roll out their lily pads for the first patients when the new hospital opens soon. “As a student at Florida Gulf Coast University, I participated in Community Engagement Day in the Spring of 2016 where I presented our first lily pad and our future plans to the student body, friends, family and faculty of FGCU,” Marisa says. “This project has been accepted with such warmth and happiness.” Each floor and unit of the new hospital has its own unique color scheme with animals so Marisa and Jessica followed the environmental trend and used many of the same bright colors. “We also included a fact about the animal on the bottom of each pad so patients are exposed to something that is very interesting to learn as they are in and out of the hospitals,” Jessica says.

Golisano Children’s Hospital of SW Florida grand opening April 1

America’s newest children’s hospital, Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida, is opening its doors in Fort Myers and is hosting a grand opening, Saturday, April 1, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. presented by Suncoast Credit Union. This new, child-friendly facility is located next to HealthPark Medical Center on Bass Road. Festivities include a ribbon cutting, tours, children’s activities and entertainment by local schools throughout the special event. “We are so excited to finally open the doors of our new children’s hospital to the Southwest Florida community, so they can see the fruits of their labors,” says Kathy Bridge-Liles, chief administrative officer of Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida. “From neighborhood lemonade stand proceeds and, literally, piggybanks, to celebrity golf tournaments and major philanthropic gifts, the community has given selflessly to help build this very special place, so children can receive the care they need, close to home.”

“It's hard to believe that it was just four years ago that we launched the challenge to communities in Southwest Florida to raise money to build a new state-of-the-art children’s hospital to serve the children and families in this area with the best care possible close to home,” said Tom Golisano. Children, and the young-at-heart, will be captivated by the many interactive design features and color-coded theming on the seven-floor facility. The building encompasses nearly 300,000 square feet and consolidates into one location the medical and ancillary specialty services required to treat critically ill or injured children in a five-county region. A total of 128 patient beds will be available at the new hospital, with future expansion capabilities up to 160 beds. A dedicated pediatric emergency department with its own ambulance entrance will be staffed by pediatric emergency physicians 24/7. Other new features include: • A classroom where children can continue their studies in an educational environment while

in the hospital • A family room • Outdoor garden with colorful statues and areas for meditation and respite for families • Family resource center • Family laundry facility • 64-room Neonatal Intensive Care Unit • Milk lab • Chapel • Two new MRI units • Acute care pediatric rehab area The community is invited to attend the grand opening. To accommodate hospital visitors, event guests are asked to park in designated areas on the north side of HealthPark Medical Center; trolley service will be provided from the parking area to the event.

Protection for your young athlete’s eyes By Dr. Heather Trapheagen Shin guards for soccer. Shoulder pads for football. Batting helmets for baseball and softball. Almost every sport has its own unique safety equipment. But most participants in sports forget to protect one of the most important parts of the body: the eyes. Sports are the leading cause of eye injuries in children under 16. Most of these could be avoided by wearing proper eye protection. Protective sports eyewear can help prevent injuries such as fracture of the eye socket, scratched corneas, swollen retinas and even cataracts caused by trauma to the eye.

Parents of children who participate in sports should insist that their children wear protective eyewear and encourage schools and athletic clubs to adopt a policy requiring it. We encourage anyone who participates in sports – children and adults alike – to remember to outfit the eyes for safety. Today’s protective eyewear is lightweight, comfortable and available with or without vision correction. If you need to “suit up” for eye safety, call to schedule an appointment with Dr. Heather Trapheagen at 573-EYES (3937). Many insurances are accepted.

Autism screening for young children April 21 in Fort Myers

Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida, in partnership with Ronald McDonald House Charities of Southwest Florida, offers a free monthly autism spectrum disorder screening for toddlers 18 months to five years of age. The next screening on the Ronald McDonald Care Mobile will be held on April 21 from 9:30 a.m. - 2 p.m. at the Sanctuary Outpatient Center, 8960 Colonial Center Drive in Fort Myers. It is estimated that one in every 68 children is diagnosed with some form of Autism Spectrum Disorder, making it more

FAMILY NEWS

common than childhood cancer, juvenile diabetes and pediatric AIDS combined. Medical consultants for the project stress that an early diagnosis can make a vast difference for toddlers and their families. They say early intensive behavioral intervention can make an immense difference not just in the development of the child, but in their families as well. The ASD screening is conducted by the Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida. A physician referral is not required. To schedule a screening, call 239343-6838.
