Wynwood Art District - for kids! By Mandy Carter If your kids love art and bright colors like mine, then a visit to Miami’s Wynwood Art District is worth the drive. It may sound like an adult hot spot, but if you go prepared, your kids will enjoy a visit to the neighborhood that tops many lists of must see spots in the United States. From the sidewalks and walls to the street signs, we were surprised to find art literally in every direction in the Wynwood neighborhood of Miami. Wynwood walls is part of an artistic movement changing the way the public views and interacts with art, in particular street art. This artistic space will impress even the youngest viewer with over 80,000 square feet of walls covered with art from more than 50 artists from all over the world.

Tips for taking young kids:

1. Time your visit for the best weather: This day trip will involve a lot of time outside. Plan to go in the winter or early spring for best temperatures. And visit in the morning before the lunchtime crowds and the midday meltdowns.

2. Make time to eat: Plan to stay for a bite to eat at the Wynwood Diner, a beautiful restaurant with a diverse menu and food that is even a piece of art on a plate! 3. Keep them interested: If your little ones enjoy taking photos, assign them camera duties. Create a game to see who can find the most art in unusual places, such as doorways, parking meters and on the sidewalks. Peruse through all the eclectic shops for some interesting conversation starters. The Wynwood Art District is truly a unique art experience every family should have together!

children $1 and then donate $1 to JDRF up to a 10 lb. limit. “Kids and adults love our annual Halloween candy buy-back program,” said Dr. Laboda. “Parents appreciate their kids giving up their Halloween candy and it gives us the chance to educate our patients about the trouble it can cause.” Children can bring in their wrapped candy to the office, it will be weighed and the children will be given cash on the spot. Halloween shopping helps make hospitals less scary for young patients Courtesy of Lee Health When you treat your pocketbook to a 10 percent discount at a Spirit Halloween store, you’ll also raise funds to support child services at Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida. The magic involves Spirit Halloween, a national retailer of Halloween merchandise, its Spirit of Children program, and you. Shoppers can visit any Spirit Halloween location and get 10 percent off their entire purchase. Spirit of Children will then donate an extra 10 percent to Golisano Children’s Hospital. Since 2007, Spirit Halloween has donated more than $147,000 to Golisano Children’s Hospital. Nationally, the program has raised $37 million for child life programs across the United States through its Spirit of Children program. The funds help child life specialists guide families through challenging medical situations and hospital stays with play, therapeutic art, music, horticulture programs, and much more. “We’re excited Spirit Halloween is again stepping forward to help Golisano Children’s Hospital provide young patients with important services 46 - October 2018

through our Child Life Services,” says Skip Leonard, chief foundation officer, Lee Health Foundation. “This is a wonderful way for people to support Southwest Florida’s only children’s hospital while at the same time saving money on costumes and other Halloween merchandise.” Because child life services are not reimbursed by insurance, Spirit Halloween enables child life specialists to work with doctors, nurses, and social workers to help children understand why they are in the hospital while also making it a less frightening environment. Participating Spirit Halloween store locations include: • Spirit Halloween – The Forum 9350 Dynasty Dr., Fort Myers • Spirit Halloween – Cape Coral 1800 NE Pine Island Rd., Cape Coral • Spirit Halloween – Bonita Springs 26831 S. Tamiami Trail, Bonita Springs • Spirit Halloween – Naples 5305 Airport Pulling Road, Naples • Spirit Halloween – Charlotte Square 2150 Tamiami Trail, Port Charlotte Family News

Autism screening for young children set for Oct. 19

Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida, in partnership with Ronald McDonald House Charities of Southwest Florida, offers a free monthly autism spectrum disorder screening for toddlers 18 months to five years of age. The next screening on the Ronald McDonald Care Mobile will be held on Oct. 19 from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at New Life Assembly, 5146 Leonard Blvd. S., Lehigh Acres. It is estimated that one in every 68 children is diagnosed with some form of Autism Spectrum Disorder, making it more common than childhood cancer, juvenile diabetes and pediatric AIDS combined. Medical consultants for the project stress that an early diagnosis can make a vast difference for toddlers and their families. They say early intensive behavioral intervention can make an immense difference not just in the development of the child, but in their families as well. The ASD screening is conducted by the Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida. The screenings are administered by an Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner, who has extensive training and experience in typical child development and developmental disorders. A physician referral is not required. To schedule a screening, call 239-343-6838.

Walk/Fun Run to Prevent Child Abuse on Oct. 20

The Children’s Network of Southwest Florida will hold its 13th Annual Walk / Fun Run to Prevent Child Abuse at Pelican Preserve at 10571 Veneto Drive in Fort Myers on Saturday, Oct. 20. The event’s goal is to increase awareness and raise funds to create child abuse prevention programs as well as fulfill the needs of the about 2,400 children currently in care. 100% of funds raised will directly benefit local abused and neglected children. Little Women

From girls playing in the attic to women living with purpose, the March sisters -- Meg, Jo, Beth and Amy -- are always committed to supporting one another. When Jo moves to New York to pen a novel, her editor challenges her to write about something much more interesting -- her family. When tragedy brings the siblings back home, sticking together takes on a whole new meaning as Jo tries to comfort Beth when she gets sick.

All Clara (Mackenzie Foy) wants is a key – a one-of-a-kind key that will unlock a box that holds a priceless gift. A golden thread, presented to her at godfather Drosselmeyer’s (Morgan Freeman) annual holiday party, leads her to the coveted key— which promptly disappears into a strange and mysterious parallel world. It’s there that Clara encounters a soldier named Phillip (Jayden Fowora-Knight), a gang of mice and the regents who preside over three Realms: Land of Snowflakes, Land of Flowers and Land of Sweets. Clara and Phillip must brave the ominous Fourth Realm, home to the tyrant Mother Ginger (Helen Mirren), to retrieve Clara’s key and hopefully return harmony to the unstable world. Starring Keira Knightley as the Sugar Plum Fairy, Disney’s new holiday feature film The Nutcracker and the Four Realms is directed by Lasse Hallström and Joe Johnston, and inspired by E.T.A. Hoffmann’s classic tale.

Academy Award nominee Benedict Cumberbatch lends his voice to the infamous Grinch, who lives a solitary life inside a cave on Mt. Crumpet with only his loyal dog, Max, for company. With a cave rigged with inventions and contraptions for his day-to-day needs, the Grinch only sees his neighbors in Whoville when he runs out of food. Each year at Christmas they disrupt his tranquil solitude with their increasingly bigger, brighter and louder celebrations. When the Whos declare they are going to make Christmas three times bigger this year, the Grinch realizes there is only one way for him to gain some peace and quiet: he must steal Christmas. To do so, he decides he will pose as Santa Claus on Christmas Eve, even going so far as to trap a lackadaisical misfit reindeer to pull his sleigh.
