HELLO AND WELCOME Happy New Year! Welcome to the spring edition of our 2019 programme. We hope you’ll join us this year (whether it’s your first time at Left Bank Leeds or your hundredth) for inspiring and thoughtprovoking experiences in our beautiful building.

Please do book tickets in advance where possible, as this not only helps us with our planning but also gives you the advance ticket price. Advance tickets are subject to a booking fee but are still cheaper than on the door.

In January we’ll host Critical Mass, a large-scale installation celebrating the diverse communities across Leeds. Artist Eva Mileusnic has worked with groups throughout Leeds to make over 1,000 plaster cast feet and sound artist Bob Birch has made a sound piece to accompany the installation.

For those of you who don’t know us yet, we’re a multidisciplinary arts venue set in an amazing Grade II* listed former church building in Headingley. We’re an organisation with heart and a down-toearth approach, connecting people to each other, to art, and to new experiences. Our stunning building is available to hire and makes the most impressive setting for weddings, celebrations and events.

If wellbeing is on your agenda in 2019, come along to our weekly yoga classes or experience deep relaxation at our quarterly Yoga Nidra & Gong Bath sessions. Take some time for yourself at Left Bank Choir – we’re always happy to welcome new members.

All money raised from our events supports the development of Left Bank Leeds Charitable Trust (charity no. 1146734). If you would like to follow us on our journey please join us on social media.

Dive into topics like the urban development of Leeds or extraordinary women at Talking Histories, or come along to our Wedding Open Day to imagine your dream celebration in our striking historic building. With art installations, indie cinema, talks, yoga, creative workshops, choir, coworking and more, we know you’ll find something (or several things!) to spark your interest.

JANUARY EXHIBITION OPENING: CRITICAL MASS 9 JAN (EXHIBITION RUNNING 9-20 JAN) 6-8PM FREE ENTRY, PLEASE BOOK IN ADVANCE

Critical Mass is a large-scale art installation by Eva Mileusnic and Bob Birch. It features over a thousand plaster-cast ‘feet’, which were made at workshops run by Eva across Leeds, and an immersive sound piece by Bob. Each pair of ‘feet’ has a section of the world map, significant to the maker, imprinted on to their soles. The work celebrates the multicultural landscape of our community. Enjoy a glass of wine at this opening event as you view the work and meet the artists. PRINT WORKSHOP WITH KIRSTIE WILLIAMS WED 23 JAN 7-9PM ADVANCE TICKETS £10 Explore the exciting process of screen printing in this taster workshop with Kirstie Williams, founder of Leeds Print Workshop. Using a combination of hand-cut paper stencils and geometric shapes and patterns, you’ll create your own Scandinavianinspired print to take home. Kirstie will explain here she finds her inspiration and how she created the new works for her exhibition in the Porch Gallery here at Left Bank Leeds.

TALKING HISTORIES: URBAN DEVELOPMENT OF LEEDS WED 30 JAN 6-7:30PM ADVANCE TICKETS £5/£4 (conc.) From medieval township to complex 21stcentury city, Leeds has grown, changed and been reinvented as a result of a number of powerful forces. But the process hasn’t always been straightforward or completely successful. Urban geographer Rachael Unsworth will explain how economic, demographic, technological, social, cultural and political factors influence change, and what Leeds’ prospects are for the future. 5.

JANUARY & FEBRUARY LEFT BANK CINEMA: THE BENTLEY EFFECT WED 30 JAN 8-9:30PM ADVANCE TICKETS £5/£4 (conc.)

The Bentley Effect documents the highs and lows of a peaceful and strategic community protest to keep a unique part of Australia gasfield-free. It captures the pressures of conflict with police and security workers, the techniques used in direct action and the unruly beauty of an intergenerational, carnival-esque protest movement, full of energy, playful stunts and knitting nanas. PORCH GALLERY OPENING: HERE BE WHALES WED 6 FEB 6-8PM FREE ENTRY, PLEASE BOOK IN ADVANCE Encompassing drawing, sculpture, collage, texture and video pieces, Here Be Whales reflects on and challenges the representations of whales in our art and culture. This relaxed opening event offers an opportunity to chat to the curators and sip a complimentary glass of wine. SPRING YOGA NIDRA & GONG BATH WITH EMMA LEAF WED 13 FEB 7-8PM TICKETS £12 Feel nourished and empowered by this wellbeingfocused evening with yoga teacher Emma Leaf of Infinite Yoga. FEBRUARY & MARCH TALKING HISTORIES: EXTRAORDINARY WOMEN WED 27 FEB 6-7:30PM ADVANCE TICKETS £5/£4 (conc.) A special Talking Histories event in the run up to International Women’s Day, focusing on the representation of women throughout history. Hear about how women have been depicted over the years and how their achievements have been both enabled and constrained. We’ll explore the dark legacy of gender inequality and highlight extraordinary women who created their own routes to power in male-dominated worlds. LEFT BANK CINEMA: ORLANDO WED 27 FEB 8-9:30PM ADVANCE TICKETS £5/£4 (conc.) Loosely based on Virginia Woolf’s 1928 novel, this sumptuous film, fizzing with wit and humour, is directed by one of Britain’s most creative feminist film makers. The story focuses on Orlando (Tilda Swinton), whose quest for love, first as a man, then as a woman, evolves over four centuries in an ironic journey through English history and the politics of gender.

MARCH TALKING ART: HERE BE WHALES WED 27 MAR 6-7:30PM ADVANCE TICKETS £5/£4 (conc.) Despite much scientific research about whales, many aspects of the various species still remain a mystery. This talk brings together those who think about whales from the point of view of art and culture, to offer new dimensions and frameworks for thought in the current age of the Anthropocene. Join the curators of the exhibition Here Be Whales as they discuss how whale representations can help us understand this complex species and the threat it faces. LEFT BANK CINEMA: THE WHALE RIDER WED 27 MAR 8-9:30PM ADVANCE TICKETS £5/£4 (conc.) Maori legend talks of Paikea, the founder of the Whangara tribe, who first arrived at the shore riding on the back of a whale. Ever since, the firstborn boy in the Whangara lineage of chiefs is considered a direct descendent and becomes the tribe’s leader. But when Chief Koro’s first grandson arrives stillborn, with a twin sister Pai who survives, both Pai and her community face a challenge. Niki Caro | 2002 | New Zealand, Germany | 1hr 40mins | PG
