HELLO AND WELCOME Welcome to the Autumn/Winter edition of our 2018 programme. We have plenty of exciting events in store to inspire, inform and delight during the cooler months. Our LS6 Cider Festival (autumn sibling to the ever-popular LS6 Beer Festival) returns for a third year. You won’t find a more beautiful venue in Leeds to drink your favourite tipple, sample heritage blends and try innovative new flavours. Soon after, we welcome The Bogside Artists with their touring exhibition Art, Conflict and Remembering. Alongside this, we’re hosting a symposium in partnership with Together For Peace, which will focus on the role artists play in conflict situations. Speakers Jo Berry and Pat Magee bring us their talk Building Bridges for Peace, in which they discuss the painful process of reconciliation after a tragic event. Painter Duncan Pearson (whose work you can see on our cover) and printmaker Kirstie Williams are exhibiting in our Porch Gallery. Both will be available to speak to at their opening events and all of their work is for sale. And then it’s almost Christmas! Get the children into the spirit at our family craft event Messy Christmas, and give yourself a seasonal treat with the atmospheric Christmas by Candlelight. If you feel like belting out some tunes, head to Beer & Carols for a feelgood festive knees-up.

Please do book tickets in advance where possible, as this not only helps us with our planning but also gives you the advance ticket price. Advance tickets are subject to a booking fee but are still cheaper than on the door. For those of you who don’t know us yet, we’re a multidisciplinary arts venue set in an amazing Grade II* listed former church building in Headingley. We’re an organisation with heart and a down-toearth approach, connecting people to each other, to art, and to new experiences. Our stunning building is available to hire and makes the most impressive setting for weddings, celebrations and events. All money raised from our events supports the development of Left Bank Leeds Charitable Trust (charity no. 1146734). If you would like to follow us on our journey please join us on social media. @leftbankleeds

OCTOBER EXHIBITION OPENING: DUNCAN PEARSON WED 3 OCT 6-8PM PAY AS YOU FEEL Working from his converted mill studio in Elland, Yorkshire, Duncan Pearson paints an array of characters ranging from the comical through to the downright creepy. Over 20 years he has developed his style and a spontaneous sense of fun that comes from everyday encounters. Join us on the opening night for a glass of wine and to meet the artist. The exhibition is open in our Porch Gallery throughout October and November.

TALKING HISTORIES: HAUNTED LEEDS WED 31 OCTOBER 6-7:30PM ADVANCE TICKETS £5/£4 Join us for an eerie evening as we unveil the haunted histories of well-known buildings in Leeds. Our speaker, Ian Crossland, works at Leeds Beckett University and has a passion for researching strange phenomena from the Headingley campus, formerly a war hospital in WWI, and beyond. He’ll tell us spine-tingling stories of The Blue Lady at Temple Newsam, a ghostly abbot and monk at Kirkstall Abbey and the phantom pianist at Leeds City Varieties. LEFT BANK CINEMA: FRANKENSTEIN (PART OF PHILOSOPHY & FILM CINEMA) WED 31 OCT 8-9:30PM ADVANCE TICKETS £5/£4 In this 1931 film, Boris Karloff plays the role of the ‘monster’, a mute brute with a madman’s brain, now a timeless and definitive image. This special screening acknowledges the 200th anniversary of the publication of Mary Shelley’s book. Afterwards, Dr. Joe Saunders, a philosopher at Durham University, will offer some thoughts on life, death and creation. JAMES WHALE / USA / 1931 / 70 MINUTES / CERT. PG

Katie will share her knowledge with us as she talks about the people and places that made Leeds’ music history happen. LEFT BANK CINEMA: A DIVORCE BEFORE MARRIAGE WED 28 NOV 8-9:30PM ADVANCE TICKETS £5/£4 When they were younger, being in a band looked like a fun, full-time job doing what you love. But as Leeds band I Like Trains discovered, the reality can be almost the exact opposite. This candid, lingering and beautifully shot film will strike a chord with many creative people in the UK today. It’s about facing difficult choices, accepting compromises and making ends meet.
