HELLO AND WELCOME Welcome to the summer edition of our 2019 programme. We’d like to say a big thank you to everyone who donated to our community garden project via Crowdfunder. Your donations meant we were able to complete the first phase of the project. We’d also like to thank The Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government, Community Wellbeing Trust, Sir George Martin Trust, Legal & General and Leeds Civic Trust for their support. We’re working with the fabulous team at Hyde Park Source to create a garden that will offer a small oasis of green in LS6 and provide a range of volunteering and wellbeing opportunities. In September, we’re celebrating our 10th birthday with a party in our new garden. This is our opportunity to officially launch our Pocket Park and to thank you for your ongoing support over the years. September is also marked by INF23, an epic, large-scale inflatable sculpture by Michael Shaw. Make sure you find time to visit and take photos – it has a serious wow factor! Join us for the opening event, attend the month long exhibition or join us at the closing party for music, drinks and art that will cast the sculpture in a whole new light.
To support us, please do book tickets in advance where possible, as this not only helps us with our planning but also gives you the advance ticket price. Advance tickets are subject to a booking fee but are still cheaper than on the door. If you don’t know us yet, we’re an arts venue set in an amazing Grade II* listed former church building in LS6. We’re an organisation with heart and a down-toearth approach, connecting people to each other, to art, and to new experiences. Our stunning building is available to hire and makes the most impressive setting for weddings, celebrations and events. Thank you so much to all of our volunteers who very kindly donate their time and expertise to support Left Bank Leeds. We are also very grateful to all of our funders who have contributed much needed financial support. All money raised from our events supports the development of Left Bank Leeds Charitable Trust (charity no. 1146734). If you would like to follow us on our journey please join us on social media.

AUGUST EXHIBITION OPENING: RECENT DRAWINGS BY ANDY BLACK WED 7 AUGUST, 6-8PM FREE ENTRY, PLEASE RSVP Artist Andy Black uses a self-described ‘alphabet of forms’ to create his drawings and large-scale wall illustrations. Some are objects from the landscape, like trees and mountains, while others are sharp-edged and geometric, or amorphous and blobby. His exhibition includes a new series of charcoal drawings that use selected motifs to construct ambiguous spaces View the work with the guidance of the artist and enjoy a complimentary glass of wine. WILD GARDEN SOUND BATH & YOGA NIDRA WED 14 AUGUST, 7-8PM ADVANCE TICKETS £12 Relax, recharge and revitalise during this special summer evening Yoga Nidra and sound bath experience. As you lay back in Shavasana pose, teacher Emma Leaf will invite you to visualise a vibrant wild garden, full of life and colour, with honeybees and butterflies flitting between fragrant flowers. Feel a deep sense of peace as Emma guides you through a meditation, accompanied by the relaxing sounds of singing bowls, gongs and shamanic instruments.
TALKING HISTORIES: WOODHOUSE MOOR IN WW2 WED 28 AUGUST, 7-8PM ADVANCE TICKETS £6/£5 (CONC.) This walking tour of Woodhouse Moor was so popular last year that we’re running it again to mark the 80th anniversary of the start of WW2. Join Dr. Henry Irving from Leeds Beckett University, who’ll guide you around the park and uncover clues that reveal details about life on the home front. Covering air raids, allotments and so much more, this summer walking tour will give you an insight into how the people of Leeds contributed to the war effort. SEPTEMBER EXHIBITION OPENING: INF23 BY MICHAEL SHAW SUN 1 SEPTEMBER, 5-7PM FREE ENTRY, PLEASE RSVP Artist Michael Shaw creates inflatable forms and site-specific works that unite sculpture and architecture. One of his largest creations yet, the giant, neon-striped inflatable sculpture at Left Bank Leeds has been designed in response to the architectural features within our amazing space. Meet the artist at this opening event and take some time to fully appreciate the sheer scale of this work while you enjoy a complimentary glass of wine. INF23 BY MICHAEL SHAW MON 2-SAT 28 SEPTEMBER, 10-5PM FREE ENTRY (NO NEED TO BOOK) Experience the architecture of Left Bank Leeds like never before. Follow the fluorescent, sitespecific inflatable sculpture by Michael Shaw as it weaves through the space and coils around its unique features. The organic form encourages playful exploration of our grade II* listed heritage building. This large-scale sculpture is accompanied by a series of relief panels that allows you to create your own brass rubbings. This exhibition coincides with the Heritage Open Days festival.
DRAWING WORKSHOP: ANDY BLACK WED 4 SEPTEMBER, 6-8PM ADVANCE TICKETS £15 Making a drawing is a kind of magic – the flat paper becomes a space, a mark becomes an object and the artist controls an arena of infinite possibilities: a constructor of worlds. In this drawing workshop with our Porch Gallery artist Andy Black, you’ll initially work on a small scale to create individual motifs. These motifs will then be combined to make a collaborative, large-scale drawing of an imaginary landscape. You don’t need any drawing experience to take part and all materials are provided. 7.
