HELLO AND WELCOME Welcome to the Spring edition of our 2019 programme. We’re excited to bring you some new events this year, and welcome you along to old favourites like the LS6 Beer Festival. Now in its ninth year, the festival takes place in May and includes a special Meet The Brewer event. You won’t find a more beautiful venue in the city to drink your favourite tipple. On the Sunday after, we’re open for our very first Beer & Brunch event. See out the weekend with chilled tunes, board games and amazing food from Smak deli. Our Talking Histories series is expanding to cover art, science, lifestyle and culture. Join us for talks on minimalist living, war films and antibiotic resistance. Messy Christmas was so well received that we’ve decided to launch a series of family-friendly craft sessions across the year. Look out for Messy Easter in April, where there’ll be Easter-themed craft activities, storytelling and a treasure hunt. And finally, we have an exciting opportunity for artists. Each year, we award £500 to the winner of the Left Bank Leeds Art Prize. We’re currently taking submissions on the theme of ‘connection’ via CuratorSpace.

Please do book tickets in advance where possible, as this not only helps us with our planning but also gives you the advance ticket price. Advance tickets are subject to a booking fee but are still cheaper than on the door. If you don’t know us yet, we’re an arts venue set in an amazing Grade II* listed former church building in LS6. We’re an organisation with heart and a down-toearth approach, connecting people to each other, to art, and to new experiences. Our stunning building is available to hire and makes the most impressive setting for weddings, celebrations and events. All money raised from our events supports the development of Left Bank Leeds Charitable Trust (charity no. 1146734). If you would like to follow us on our journey please join us on social media. @leftbankleeds

APRIL PORCH GALLERY OPENING: LUCY KETCHIN WED 3 APRIL 6-8PM FREE ENTRY, PLEASE RSVP Recognisable for its stripped-back simplicity, Lucy Ketchin’s smile-inducing work explores self-reflection, growth, friendship and simple pleasures. The Leeds-based artist uses hand-dyed organic fabric in her textile pieces, making the dyes herself using fruits and vegetables. Her exhibition includes illustrations, textiles and drawings. The opening night is an opportunity to meet the artist and sample a free beer in a special can illustrated by Lucy for Northern Monk. CHOIR: SPRING SOIRÉE MON 15 APRIL 8-9:30PM PAY AS YOU FEEL We’re throwing open the doors to our weekly choir session and welcoming an audience of friendly faces to watch a performance by our very own choir. Relax with friends and grab a drink from the bar before enjoying the melodious sounds of singing in our former church building. If you’re interested in joining the choir but would like a taster first, this night is the ideal opportunity. Expect soul, folk, jazz and feel-good songs, with plenty of tunes that you’ll recognise. ECOCYCLE LABYRINTH WED 17 & FRI 19 APR, 10AM-5PM THURS 18 APR, 10AM-8PM FREE ENTRY Come and connect with natural rhythms, find new perspectives and contemplate the visceral nature of life. This immersive experience invites you take a meditative walk around an infinity loop of light, sound and interactive elements. Words placed around the installation prompt you to consider your current path in life or navigate through a specific problem. APRIL MUSIC & SPOKEN WORD: WE REALLY EXISTED AND WE REALLY DID THIS FRI 19 APRIL 7-10PM ADVANCE TICKETS £8 Join us for an apocalyptic folk odyssey through our unstable present with David Benjamin Blower. His songs and readings are a meditation on the time between a waning past and our potentially catastrophic future. David creates a space for lamenting endings, loss and collapse, where a growing awareness of the ecological crisis we’ve triggered opens out into melancholic wonder at our very existence. MESSY EASTER SAT 20 APRIL 10-1PM ADVANCE TICKETS £4

(SIBLINGS UNDER 2 ARE FREE)

Bring the children along to Left Bank Leeds for some fun Easter themed crafts and let them get messy without worrying about the cleanup! There’ll be cutting, sticking, egg decorating, bonnet and chick making and plenty of glitter. Take a seat in the storytelling space to listen to some seasonal tales, and join in with an exciting treasure hunt. Activities will be suitable for ages 2-11, though younger siblings are welcome to attend. TALKING SCIENCE: ANTIBIOTIC RESISTANCE WED 24 APRIL 6-7PM ADVANCE TICKETS £6/£5 (CONC.) Some of the most fundamental battles for human beings happen on a microscopic scale. For the most part, we win – but we’re dangerously close to tipping the balance. As infections become harder to treat due to growing resistance to antibiotics, we edge closer to a post-antibiotic era, where once-minor ailments become deadly. PhD researcher Jack Caudwell tells us about the innovative ways scientists are combatting the problem and explains what we can do to help. APRIL & MAY NORTHERN CRAFT FAIR SAT 27 APRIL 11-5PM FREE ENTRY Independent craft collective Northern Craft host their biggest fair yet at Left Bank Leeds. The space will be buzzing with over 50 stalls showcasing work from the best local makers, as well as food, drink, craft workshops and live printing from Awesome Merchandise. Come along to browse the eclectic selection of crafts on show, pick up a gift (for someone else, or yourself!) and gather a little creative inspiration. Children and well behaved dogs are welcome. TEXTILE WORKSHOP WITH LUCY KETCHIN WED 1 MAY 6-8PM ADVANCE TICKETS £15 Take inspiration from Lucy Ketchin’s exhibition in our Porch Gallery as you join the artist to create your own textile banner. Themed around things that bring you joy, your banner can be adorned with words, shapes, favourite colours or a combination of all three. Take the opportunity to slow down, make mindfully and creatively explore composition and colour. All materials are provided and you don’t need any sewing experience.

LS6 BEER FESTIVAL 9-11 MAY ADVANCE TICKETS FROM £12 We’re one of the most impressive venues in Leeds to enjoy a few pints in, so it’s no surprise that the LS6 Beer Festival is returning for its 9th year. There’s an excellent selection of beers for you to sample this year, as well as delicious street food from Dilla Deli and Sausage Box, DJs, talks, tastings and an opportunity to meet the brewers. And the best part – it’s all for charity! All money raised supports the development of Left Bank Leeds. See website for dates, times and tickets.

SUMMER GONG BATH WED 15 MAY 7-8PM ADVANCE TICKETS £12 Our seasonal gong bath returns to celebrate the arrival of summer. JUNE PORCH GALLERY OPENING BEAUTIFUL ARTEFACTS WED 5 JUNE 6-8PM FREE ENTRY, PLEASE RSVP Exploring human fascination with outer space, Beautiful Artefacts focuses on what lies beyond the realms of our natural senses. Artist Hondartza Fraga offers a perspective on the relationship between drawing, digital and analogue imaging techniques, focusing on space exploration and deep sea expeditions. View the work with the guidance of the artist and enjoy a complimentary glass of wine at this opening event. TALKING CULTURE: WAR SCENES IN FILMS WED 26 JUNE 6-7PM ADVANCE TICKETS £6/£5 (CONC.) Some of the oldest narratives in human history depict great battles, demonstrating a fascination with war that still permeates our culture. Join history buff and ex-lecturer Eoin Howe as he dissects representations of war on the big screen, from WWII films to sci-fi movies. Find out how war movies try to make sense of the incomprehensible, why the battles in Star Wars and Star Trek look completely different, and why a physicist’s take on a space battle wouldn’t make the final cut. POP-UP CHOIR SUN 30 JUNE 2-4PM ADVANCE TICKETS £7 Feel the magic of performing as a group at our popup choir, led by singing teacher Emma Sargison. Everyone is welcome at this relaxed event, where you’ll learn a collection of fun songs that will leave you feeling uplifted. Expect everything from pop to Americana, with some soul and jazz classics thrown in, too. All you need is a willingness to listen and take direction – the emphasis is on the enjoyment of singing over creating a perfect arrangement. 9.
