’m writing this letter on December 21, 2011, just hours after my oldest brother, Jeffery, pointed out during a family gathering that we have exactly one year from today before the Maya calendar ends—one of the most talked about dates in recent memory. Anticipating that we could have 365 more days of fearful hyperbole thrust upon us, I am grateful for Linda Sechrist’s myth-busting inspired exploration of insights from leading experts on the subject. Still, taking another look at the cosmic picture is always a good thing, for whatever reason; it prompts us to think about the way we live and the way we treat the home planet that sustains us. The vast majority of people dwelling on Earth now live more secure and comfortable lives than their ancestors did even a century ago. The cost of achieving our modern lifestyle, however, has been steep: Many have been subjected to economic inequity while we’ve robbed future generations of untold natural beauties and beneficial wonders all around the world, including vanishing species. The good news is that 21st century technologies and broader access to educated, conscious choices have the potential to radically redirect the dangerous course we’re on. The ability to raise disadvantaged populaces from poverty is within our grasp. The shift from fossil fuels and harmful chemicals beginning to take root could change everything. What is required is will: the will to change, to admit that plundering the Earth leads to bigger problems; the will to admit that money, possessions and gadgets do not necessarily bring happiness. When we admit that renewable resources can be limitless and capitalize on that fact, there really will be fewer reasons to fight amongst ourselves. I’m pleased to be working on the cutting-edge of such positive societal change. During the past four plus years of publishing Natural Awakenings, I’ve had the privilege of witnessing heartening shifts in people’s attitude around the world. It’s wonderful news, for example, that renewable energy production has surpassed nuclear energy production in the United States. Did you know we have inventors trying the cross the country in vehicles that consume less electricity than a typical 100-watt light bulb? Have you heard that jets have taken flight powered by bio-fuels made from algae grown in 55 gallon drums? Were you aware that a major automobile factory can produce cars with zero waste going into landfills? We live in an era of amazing innovation. The more we focus our energy on what can be, the more widely and quickly solutions to present challenges will come into existence. Natural Awakenings is here to inspire, educate and empower such fresh thinking; the pending benefits to us all are tremendous. Special kudos go to our loyal advertisers that make it possible for us to bring you a whole community of helpful resources each month. Thanks, too, to our loyal readers for creating space for us in your lives.
To a new year of possibilities and peace,
Reid Boyer, Publisher

Transition Lehigh Valley
T
ransitions Lehigh Valley (TLV), now an official Transition Initiative, has scheduled a series of informative meetings at 7 p.m. on consecutive second Fridays beginning January 13 through March 9 at the Unitarian Universalist Church of the Lehigh Valley, located in Bethlehem. This is the year for people, communities and organizations of the Lehigh Valley to recognize that important, life-altering changes are needed to cope with what author James Howard Kunstler calls “converging catastrophes of the 21st century.” The meetings will focus on dialoguing about the intertwined economic, environmental, and basic needs challenges we are facing and how to move forward in creating resilient communities. The need to act is becoming more urgent, the readiness to act is there, and there now is a strategy for building local resilience that provides startup models for how communities can commit to sustainable living practices and align in pursuit of a sustainable future, according to members of TLV. Transitions Lehigh Valley became the 97th official Transition Initiative in the U.S. on September 21. An effort of the Alliance for Sustainable Communities-Lehigh Valley, it was formed to bring the Transition Movement to the Lehigh Valley. T
he Mid Atlantic Renewable Energy Association (MAREA), a nonprofit organization dedicated to informing and educating the public on renewable energy production, energy efficiency, and sustainable living, will host its next monthly meeting at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, January 31 at TEK Park, Hamilton Boulevard, Breinigsville, Inspired by recent power outages, the meeting will revisit solar as a reliable source of electricity when the grid’s down. The discussion will cover battery backup, AC Coupling and more. Going from theory to the specifics, Bill Hennessy and Bruce Hankins (both certified photovoltaic installers by the North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners) will discuss the AC Coupling technology that adds battery backup to an existing solar electric installation. They’ll look at design and cost considerations for adding battery backup to existing systems and for planning new systems. They’ll help attendees understand how it all works and answer any questions or concerns. The discussion is meant for those who have existing solar systems, are considering getting a solar electric system and those who just like to understand how things work. No technical background is required. TEK Park is located on Hamilton Blvd. in Breinigsville. For additional information, contact Vera Cole at 215-258-0526 or visit TheMAREA.org.

newbriefs Informed Foods now Offering Down to Earth Trail Mix
I
nformed Foods is now offering what they call, “one of the most nutrient dense, satisfying, and delicious, trail mixes you will ever find.” The trail mix is a combination of 10 organic ingredients including soaked and low temp dehydrated walnuts, almonds, pecans, and pumpkin seeds, plus dried cranberries, blueberries, sour cherries, raisins, coconut, and chunks of 70 percent dairy free dark chocolate. According to store manager, Sean Ward, soaking and dehydrating is necessary in order to neutralize the enzyme inhibitors contained in them. These inhibitors naturally prevent seeds and nuts from sprouting prematurely but they can strain and tax one’s digestive system. Soaking them helps encourage the production of beneficial enzymes. These good enzymes increase the availability of many vitamins, minerals and other nutrients contained in the nuts and seeds and also make the nuts and seeds easier to digest. “Traditional cultures throughout history such as the Aztecs of South America and Native Americans soaked all seeds and nuts in salt water and then dehydrated them in the sun,” he says. Some of the nutrients contained in the 10 ingredients include vitamins C, A, E, K and B complex; minerals such as magnesium, calcium, selenium, potassium, manganese, phosphorus, copper, ® iron and zinc; anti-inflammatory properties such as omega 3 fatty awaken i ngs acids, phytonutrients and phytosterols; plus lutein and fiber. The Lehigh Valley’s Coolest Celebration
F
ebruary is the perfect time to bundle up and head to Emmaus to have a blast—a SnowBlast. The Sixth Annual SnowBlast Winter Festival will take place throughout Emmaus on February 3 and 4. Sponsored by the Emmaus Arts Commission, the festival schedule features free, community-wide events. Activities include many favorites such as the Friday night kick-off on the Emmaus Triangle with an appearance by the SnowBlast Ice Princess, sculpted ice demonstrations, outdoor games and the Emmaus Main Street Partners’ Ice Bar. New this year is the SnowBlast Winter Festival Art Show and Sale at the Clock Building featuring artwork by local talent, hands-on craft activities with Cedar Crest College art students and the C.R.E.A.T.E. Book Cart. Saturday continues with activities scheduled at the Emmaus Public Library and the first-ever SnowBlast Community Art Project where participants help to create large canvas panels with a winter theme. Ellen Wilson, co-chair of the event, says this sixth year is a celebration of the arts. “Plus, we’re offering Saturday art activities coordinated by the Emmaus Arts Commission,” says co-chair Teri Sorg-McManamon. “Our goal is to continue the great traditions around SnowBlast and add more collaborators and artistic events throughout Emmaus.” For the most up-to-date information and a complete schedule of activities, visit EmmausArts.org. Science Confirms Benefits of Herbal Brews
E
njoy your next cup of herbal tea while toasting to better health. U.S. Department of Agriculture-funded researchers have confirmed the science-based health benefits of three of Americans’ favorite herbal teas. Chamomile tea has long been said to soothe a troubled belly and restless mind. After reviewing scientific literature on the herb’s beneficial bioactivity, the study team published an article in Agricultural Research describing test-tube evidence that the beverage also offers moderate antimicrobial and significant anti-plateletclumping action. They found that peppermint tea also shows significant antimicrobial, plus antiviral, antioxidant and antitumor actions, and even some antiallergenic potential. After reviewing human clinical trials, the researchers further reported that drinking hibiscus tea lowered blood pressure in a group of pre-hypertensive and mildly hypertensive adults.
Eat Breakfast to Shed Pounds
Y
es, breakfast is the most important meal of the day, says Heather Leidy, an assistant professor in the University of Missouri’s department of nutrition and exercise physiology. “Everyone knows that eating breakfast is important, but many people still don’t make it a priority.” Leidy’s research shows that a healthy breakfast, especially one high in protein, increases satiety and reduces hunger throughout the day, making it a valuable strategy to control appetite and regulate food intake. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging, she discovered why. Eating a protein-rich breakfast works to reduce the brain signals controlling food motivation and reward-driven eating behavior.
Fasting Is Good for the Heart
N
ew evidence from cardiac researchers at the Heart Institute at Intermountain Medical Center, in Utah, suggests that routine, periodic fasting is good for our health and specifically, our heart, because it reduces weight and levels of sugar and triglycerides in the blood. The results expand upon a 2007 Intermountain Healthcare study showing a direct association between fasting and a reduced risk of coronary heart failure. The findings were presented at the 2011 annual scientific sessions of the American College of Cardiology, in New Orleans.

The Heavy Secret of Fake Fats
F
ood containing synthetic fats—which taste like natural fats, but with fewer calories—may sound enticing to dieters. However, fat substitutes used in low-calorie potato chips and other processed foods could instead backfire and contribute to weight gain and obesity. Findings by Purdue University scientists published online in the American Psychological Association’s journal, Behavioral Neuroscience, challenges marketing claims that foods made with fat substitutes help with weight loss. Apparently, the hitch is that synthetic fats can interfere with the body’s ability to regulate food intake, leading to inefficient use of calories and weight gain.

Calm Work Stress
F
eeling psychologically strained or blue at work? A simple, daily B vitamin supplement may be an answer. Australia’s Centre for Human Psychopharmacology, at Swinburne University of Technology, and the National Institute of Complementary Medicine recently partnered in a study assessing the personalities, work demands and mood, anxiety and strain experienced by 60 men and women. Half the group took a nutrientherb-blend supplement with the full spectrum of B vitamins plus calcium, magnesium and vitamin C, nutrients known to help with the stress response; and passionflower and oats, which also soothe the nervous system. The other half received a placebo. At the end of three months, controlling for differences in personality and work demands, the B-complex treatment group reported significantly lower personal strain. The supplement group also reported decreased feelings of depression/dejection, anger/hostility and tension/anxiety, as well as less fatigue. The placebo group noticed no such changes. It’s wise to talk with a doctor or other health professional before beginning any supplementation program; bottled Bs may interact with certain medications and with each other. B vitamins occur naturally in meat and tuna; whole grains; leafy greens like collards, kale and Swiss chard; lentils and beans; broccoli, Brussels sprouts and cabbage; and potatoes and oranges.

The Power of Good Posture
M
other’s warnings against slouching were correct. Recent research proves that poor posture not only makes a bad impression, it can make us feel physically weaker. The study, published in the Journal of Experimental Social Psychology, explored the relationship of posture and pain tolerance and found that by simply adopting more dominant poses, individuals can feel more powerful, in control and better able to tolerate distress. More, those studied using the most dominant posture were able to comfortably tolerate more pain than others assigned a more neutral or submissive stance. People tend to curl up into a ball when in pain, but the University of Southern California researchers recommend doing the opposite—try sitting or standing up straight, lifting the chin, pushing out the chest and generally expanding the body shape. They suggest that these small, yet empowering, changes in behavior can decrease sensitivity to pain. Adopting a powerful posture may even affect the body’s hormone levels, boosting testosterone, which is associated with increased pain tolerance, and decreasing cortisol, typically released in response to stress.

Demand Labels on Genetically Engineered Foods The United States is a rarity among developed countries in that it does not require labeling of genetically engineered (GE) foods. Russia, Japan, China, Australia, New Zealand and 15 nations in the European Union require notice of GE content. A poll by ABC News shows that 93 percent of Americans want the federal government to require mandatory labeling of these foods. The nonprofit Center for Food Safety (CFS) has filed a petition with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) demanding that the agency require the labeling of GE foods, on behalf of the Just Label It campaign (JustLabelIt.org), a coalition of 350 companies, organizations, scientists, doctors and individuals dedicated to food safety and consumer rights. In 1992, the FDA issued a policy statement that GE foods were not “materially” different than traditional foods, and so did not need to be labeled. Agency policy severely constricts differences only to alterations that can be tasted, smelled or otherwise detected through the five senses. CFS Executive Director Andrew Kimbrell states, “Current FDA policy uses 19th-century rationale for a 21st-century issue, leaving consumers in the dark as to hidden changes to their food. It is long overdue that the FDA acknowledges the myriad reasons genetically engineered foods should be labeled and label these novel foods once and for all.” Critics claim that GE foods are linked to both personal health and environmental risks.

Resilient Communities
Volunteerism Remains Strong in America More than 60 million Americans volunteered 8 billion hours of their services in 2010, holding steady with the previous year, according to the latest report by the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS), released late last year. Communities are benefiting from their work in mentoring and tutoring youth, fundraising and providing food, transportation and general labor, including disaster relief. “Every day, volunteers of all ages are giving their time and talents to solve problems and make our country stronger,” says Robert Velasco II, acting CEO of CNCS. He observes that civic involvement increases as people become more deeply rooted in their communities through family, work and school ties. The members of Generation X (born 1965 to 1981) are volunteer stars, having contributed 2.3 billion hours in 2010, 110 million more than the year before. Teen volunteer rates were also up from 2002 through 2010, compared to 1989. A Volunteering in America report attributes this to emphasis on service-learning in high schools, the influence of parents that volunteer, social networking and the ease of finding opportunities via the Internet. A French study examining wild gudgeon fish that live directly downstream from a pharmaceutical drug manufacturing plant found that up to 80 percent of them exhibited both male and female traits in their sex organs. Such sex abnormalities indicate endocrine disruption that can foreshadow larger effects on fish populations because of reductions in breeding abilities. Upstream of the plant, only 5 percent of such intersex fish were detected. Excreted pharmaceuticals can enter the environment from sewage treatment plants or the flushing of unwanted or old drugs down the toilet. They also can directly enter waterways via discharge into rivers and streams by drug manufacturing plants. The study is the first to link discharge from a drug plant, rather than a sewage plant, with physical and chemical changes in fish. The inquiry was initiated after fishermen along the Dore River, in France, noticed swollen bellies and abnormal innards in the wild gudgeon fish. Study results were published in the journal Environmental International. More research is needed to identify the types and levels of specific drugs in the water at each site. As a percentage of total U.S. energy generation, renewables are steadily, if modestly, gaining. California’s leadership goal targets the utilization of 33 percent renewable energy sources by 2020. Hydroelectric, geothermal, solar/photovoltaic, wind and biomass combined make up a growing segment of the mix: 11.7 percent as of June 2011, surpassing nuclear at 11.1 percent. For the same period in 2010, nuclear was 11.6 percent, and renewable was 10.6, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration. Forbes reports that many environmentalists, however, think that the two prominent technologies that currently make up much of the renewables sector— hydroelectric power, at 35 percent, and biomass, at 48 percent—are the least attractive. (Wind is the third-largest, at 13 percent of renewable, 1.5 percent of the total.) Large-scale hydroelectric power production has harmful impacts on river ecosystems and has become less popular in the developed world. As for biomass, each of the many types of feedstock must be evaluated individually for its emissions profile, water footprint and other considerations, such as whether farm fields or forests need that material to decompose in place in order to retain soil or ecosystem function. natural awakenings January 2012 21

efficiently right here in the Lehigh Valley. Since 40 percent of our energy is used by buildings, reducing this energy use is of vital importance, especially in the Lehigh Valley where most of our buildings are old—often with leaky windows and little or no insulation. Reducing energy use in these buildings is also the fastest and most inexpensive way to reduce CO2 emmisions. Adding insulation and eliminating air leakage have less than a three-year return on investment, plus they are some of the easiest energy improvements to do. One of the most effective tools to save energy is a caulking gun to reduce air leakage. The place where the wood framing meets the foundation is a good place to start. That area usually has no insulation at all, and even on new houses it is one of the leakiest areas. Caulking any cracks and adding insulation will make the home warmer in winter. Locally, the Sustainable Energy Fund offers financing for businesses for energy efficiency and renewable energy projects. Residential loans are offered by AFC First Financial Corporation through their Keystone HELP® loan program. Often the loan payments can be structured so that the savings in energy use pay for the loan. There are many incentives offered by PPL Electric Utilities through their e-Power program. Small businesses can get up to 75 percent of the costs of lighting improvements paid for through the Direct Connect program. Often the payback in energy savings for the customer is less than a year. For those concerned about climate change, one of the best things to do is act locally and have an energy audit done on their home or business. By following the recommendations of the audit, folks can save energy and do their part to reduce emissions. Altogether, some 20 billion catalogs are mailed annually, to the frustration of Earth-conscious shoppers. According to the nonprofit ForestEthics, the average American will spend the equivalent of eight months of their life dealing with junk mail. We all can save valuable time, conserve America’s forests, ease up on overflowing landfills, and reduce fuel and other materials wasted on unwanted catalogs by following these simple tips. 1. Ditch duplicate mailings. If you receive multiples of a catalog you like, call and ask the company to remove the extra listing. 2. Delete your address. In the Year 2012 Dispelling the Mystery by Linda Sechrist
Searching “Maya 2012” online yields a morass of some 10 million results, so Natural Awakenings sought clarity about the phenomenon of expected world change associated with December 21, 2012, by focusing on what leading authorities have to say.
J
ohn Major Jenkins, a respected 2012 author of Maya Cosmogenesis 2012 and The 2012 Story, and director of The Center for 2012 Studies, created contemporary awareness of the galactic alignment of the sun with the center of the Milky Way galaxy, which underlies the famous 2012 cycle-ending date on a winter solstice. His studies of the original Mayan calendar, located in Izapa, supported the true day count of the Mayan Long Count calendar.
Jenkins points out that according to the calculations of astronomer Jean Meeus, this alignment began around 1980 and will end around 2016. “Meeus’ calculations support my belief that the alignment occurs over time, rather than precisely on December 21, 2012,” advises Jenkins. Robert Sitler’s long-standing personal relationships with today’s Maya and formal study of their living communities in Mexico and Guatemala inform his latest book, The Living Maya:

Ancient Wisdom in the Era of 2012. He serves as director of Latin American studies at Stetson University, in DeLand, Florida. Both experts agree that December 21, 2012 signals neither the end of the world nor the conclusion of the complex Mayan calendar; it is however, the end of the 13-Bak’tun cycle of 5,125 years. The calendrical cosmology indicates that this period comes to fruition on December 21, 2012, the northern hemisphere’s winter solstice. “Nothing in any of the ancient hieroglyphs refers to the end of the world,” advises Sitler. He further notes that contemporary Mayas’ strong environmental ethic aptly supports the needed shift in consciousness forecasted for 2012. From Jenkins’ perspective, the shift is what the ancient Maya saw as a transformation and renewal involving an awakening of consciousness. “It is a misconception that the awakening will automatically happen on December twenty-first.” He explains that Mayan spiritual teachings intended to empower individuals and provide guidelines for how awakening can occur in a ceremonial context at the end of cycles. “To the living Maya, awakening from a state of ego-centered, self-serving sleep means waking up to a larger perspective of unity consciousness; of seeing that our collective state of out-of-control egoism and greed is not good for Earth,” says Jenkins. The good news: Such fates are far from inevitable.
“People seem to expect that as soon as we start to need reading glasses, we should also expect some of these cognitive issues to arise, but it does not need to be that way,” says Naples, Florida-based Neurology Doctor David Perlmutter, co-author of Power up Your Brain. “You can absolutely do things early on in life and throughout your lifetime that work to maintain the bulk and function of the brain.”
Here’s how:
Stay lean. It may seem counterintuitive, but mounting evidence suggests that in order to grow a bigger brain, many of us should be eating less. “The key to the brain maintaining and even regenerating itself is the activation of a set of genes that code for a protein called brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF),”

explains Perlmutter. “BDNF is significantly enhanced in people that simply cut down their calorie consumption.” Several animal and human studies support this conclusion. One 2009 study, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, divided 50 men and women age 50 and older into three groups that slashed calorie intake by 20 percent, 30 percent and not at all. After three months, the groups that restricted their calories saw their verbal memory scores jump by more than 20 percent. Perlmutter notes that just being overweight in the prime of life can promote excess inflammation and free radical production—two enemies of a healthy brain. A 2005 study of 10,000 men and women conducted by researchers at Kaiser Permanente found that people that were obese in their early 40s had a 74 percent increased risk of developing dementia later in life. “Just a 25 percent reduction in calories over one month’s time
can have a profound effect on boosting memory,” Perlmutter notes. Eat a brain-building diet. Aside from cutting calories, experts say it’s critical to load up on foods that boost neurogenesis (the development of new brain cells) and stall brain atrophy. Eating more fish (or omega-3 supplements), adding fruits and vegetables and cutting back on refined carbohydrates do just that, advises Dr. Christiane Northrup, obstetrician, gynecologist and author of Women’s Bodies Women’s Wisdom. “The brain is mostly made up of omega-3 fats, and many women, in particular, are lacking them in their diet,” she observes. Perlmutter notes that supplementing one’s intake of omega-3 fatty acid DHA, present in fatty fish and marine algae, has been shown to switch on the genes that jumpstart BDNF production. DHA is also anti-inflammatory and promotes healthy blood flow to the brain. But people shouldn’t wait too long to load up on it. One 2010 trial of 485 healthy adults with mild memory complaints found that those who took 900 milligrams per day of algae-based DHA supplements for six months made significantly fewer errors on memory tests than they had at the study’s onset. Another study by the National Institute on Aging, however, found that DHA supplementation had little impact on patients once severe dementia had set in. So, sooner is better. Healthy fats aside, dark-colored fruits such as blackberries, blueberries and plums are all rich with antioxidants, substances known to scavenge cell-damaging free radicals in the brain. Also, cruciferous vegetables like broccoli and broccoli sprouts contain a powerful compound called sulforaphane, believed to boost the body’s own production of antioxidants. One famous 2005 study followed 13,388 women over several decades, and found that those that ate the most cruciferous vegetables and leafy greens stayed mentally sharp for far longer than those that ate the least. New research from Rush University, in Chicago, further suggests that a deficiency of B12, found in fish, liver, milk and eggs,

may hasten brain shrinkage as previously functioning cells die off. Overloading on refined carbohydrates like white flour, pasta and potatoes carries a similar result. “Elevated blood sugar can destroy the brain,” advises Perlmutter, pointing to a 2005 study in the journal Neurology, which linked accelerated brain shrinkage with elevated blood sugar. Prevent hormonal havoc. Ebbing hormones can also have a measurable impact on our ability to recall words and follow through on tasks, says Hawaii naturopathic physician Laurie Steelsmith, author of Natural Choices for Women’s Health. One 2009 University of California study of 2,362 women between the ages of 42 and 52 found that 60 percent suffered memory and mental-processing problems. “I hear about it almost every day from women in my practice,” comments Steelsmith. “They’re trying to find the word for, say, ‘garlic’ or ‘pen,’ and it just won’t come to them. It can be very frustrating.” Steelsmith notes that estrogen plays a critical role in influencing verbal and spatial memory and fine motor skills and bolstering the blood-brain barrier to keep toxins out. Meanwhile, progesterone acts on the same brain receptors that Valium does, promoting calm and aiding sleep. In the days immediately prior to menstruation, when estrogen and progesterone levels are low, or once women begin to approach menopause and they stay low, the brain feels it. In an ideal world, the adrenal glands kick in to pick up where the ovaries leave off—producing sex hormones. “But women that are stressed out or not nourishing themselves tend to experience adrenal fatigue, so their adrenals are not able to act as a secondary source of hormones,” says Steelsmith. For ovulating women, she recommends taking 100 to 175 milligrams (mg) daily of the herb Rhodiola rosea during the second half of the menstrual cycle to support fatigued adrenal glands and ward off hormone-related brain fog. If the condition occurs only for a few days before a menstrual period, and is accompanied by tender breasts, lack of sleep and heavy monthly bleeding, the problem may be low progesterone. For that, try the herb chaste tree berry during the second half of the menstrual cycle, or consider a low dose, over-the-counter progesterone cream, says Northrup. For post-menopausal women, she recommends taking up to 50 mg per day of pregnenolone, an adrenal hormone that the body naturally converts into estrogen and progesterone. (While pregnenolone is available over the counter, Steelsmith suggests that women have a naturopath first test their hormone levels in order to determine an appropriate dose.) Or, older men and women experiencing age-related 32

The Path to Detoxification by Dr. Conrad Maulfair Jr.
W
hen we look for underlying reasons for health problems and symptoms, we typically find toxins in one form or another at the base of the mountain. Changing our diet and detoxifying with a number of common methods can do wonders for our health and well-being. However, some people find they cannot get lasting results with self-care; these are the people who can benefit from a program of thorough detoxification. Toxins are stored in adipose, or fat, tissue throughout the body. The body chooses fat tissue because it has a low blood supply, so storing toxins in fat means they may stay out of circulation in the blood stream until we are exercising or missing a meal and then our body burns that fat tissue for energy. The only thing we may notice is that we may feel light headed or ill; perhaps developing a headache for no reason we can put our finger on. The reason though is within us—our body just dumped a bit of toxins into the blood stream and we are feeling it. Most people answer this problem with more toxins, like an aspirin or antidepressant. That does not work; it only makes us worse over time. The science is strong and growing in scope. The Environmental Working Group found evidence of 287 chemicals in the umbilical cord blood of 10 infants. The US Geological Survey measured organic wastewater contaminants (OWCs) in 139 streams in 30 of our 50 states. They found that 80 percent of the streams had measurable OWCs including cholesterol drugs, insect repellents, triclosan (an anti-microbial), fire retardants and detergent. In his book, The Seven Pillars of Health, Dr. Don Colbert says 80,000 tons of carcinogens are released into the air annually in North America; there are 2,100 chemicals in most municipal water supplies and there are over 50,000 chemicals in commercial use. New York University School of Medicine researchers established a causal link between air pollution and arteriosclerosis in 2005, and the Environmental Health Perspectives Journal cited toxins such as PCB’s, dioxin and pesticides increase arteriosclerosis and fat in artery walls. We could go on and on—the body of scientific knowledge of the health problems caused by contaminants grows monthly. As we age it starts to be become apparent that we are harboring more toxins because we experience a lasting fatigue; we crave drugs if we’ve been a user in the past; and 34 Lehigh Valley www.healthylehighvalley.com
we develop symptoms that stick around. Symptoms arising from toxic metals like mercury arsenic, cadmium and others as well as pesticides, herbicides, food additives and the toxins from medical and street drugs accumulate and overwhelm our liver and other organs or simply give us symptoms that do not go away. Taking antioxidants helps in the detoxification pathways and prevents some toxins from harming our body. Utilizing various detoxification protocols like colonics and digestive detoxification methods can help, but they fail to reach the toxins stored in adipose tissue and the myelin sheath around the nerves of our body. So what releases the toxins from deep fat stores throughout the body? We know of no other effective program to do so other than chelation therapy for toxic metals detoxification and the Hubbard method of sauna detoxification for the hundreds of other poisons and mercury the body stores. With the daily use of nutrients and niacin, mild exercise and dry heat sauna individuals can reduce the level of toxins in the body to the point where they feel the resurgence in well being, energy and mental clarity they desire. The complete program protocol can be found in L. Ron Hubbard’s book, Clear Body Clear Mind. Followed exactly, this program is profound in its benefits.
Detox program can improve personality — and IQ!
The dramatic benefits of the Purification program are illustrated with the Oxford Capacity Analysis Personality graphs, above, of two individuals who did the Purification program, The dotted line shows test results before the Purification program, the solid line after. These individuals also had IQ increases of 6 points and 8 points respectively.
Chelation therapy can be used as a preventive program to clean up the ravages of daily living with a maintenance program of a treatment every month. Taking high quality nutrients and eating clean, organic foods and avoiding the chemicals in manufactured foods goes a long way in preventing the build up of toxins in the body. Avoiding sources of contamination is key to health aging and keeping ones wits. Losing weight is a challenging process filled with emotional and physical ups and downs. It’s no wonder then that year after year, the number one New Year’s resolution has been to lose weight. However, with the help of local businesses dedicated to helping individuals face the challenges of weight loss, the chances of turning resolutions into reality just got a whole lot better.
t C.H.A.N.G.E., certified hypnotherapist and licensed practical nurse, Beverley Bley, offers the “C.H.A.N.G.E. Your Weight Forever” hypnotherapy program with sessions customized to meet individuals’ specific needs and goals. The structured programs take into account and resolve the psychological and emotional aspects in life that may be contributing to a lack of longterm success. Hypnotherapy “turns the dial down” on old, nonproductive habits, behaviors and problems that have contributed to weight gain. Those tendencies, actions and reactions are overcome and replaced with permanent, easily maintained, healthy changes in eating habits that can last a lifetime. The desire and willingness to “choose” to eat healthy, well balanced, nourishing foods and motivation to exercise can be increased. Hypnotherapy is a very natural and yet powerful technique of focused, therapeutic relaxation that enables the subconscious mind to be receptive to and to act on beneficial, productive and pro-active suggestions. Changes in attitude, actions and reactions begin almost immediately and there is an enhanced feeling of well-being and control. Choosing healthier foods and feeling satisfied with smaller portions becomes an everyday occurrence more easily, naturally and comfortably. t Hartzell’s Pharmacy, the belief that losing weight is easier if individuals have direct support is at the cornerstone of their weight management programs. Three different programs are offered—each designed to help people maintain a healthy lifestyle. All of the programs are overseen and run by Robert Hartzell, a registered pharmacist and certified clinical nutritionist, and Shelley Surber, a registered dietitian, both of whom are dedicated to helping individuals get through every aspect of their weight loss journey. The programs include: 1. U-Lite is a three-week program to help you feel better by eating the right balance of good carbs and protein. or many, losing weight is not just about fitting into smallersized jeans. In fact, when asked what they want to see when they look in the mirror, many say they just want to be happy or feel confident. Often, those types of responses are indicators that something is driving them into the arms of their favorite comfort food. Options Hypnosis takes an integrative approach to weight loss, utilizing hypnosis, life coaching and energy psychology. According to clinical hypnotist, Jo Ann Schaffer, helping a client address some of their other areas of concern ensures that they won’t end up back where they started. “Many people go through life on auto pilot,” says Schaffer. “Some will decide to flick off the switch. They take back the controls, keeping an eye on the gauge marked ‘weight,’ and enjoy the feeling of moving forward. Suddenly, a light flashes over the dial for ‘stress,’ or ‘depression,’ or ‘pain,’ and before they know it, things start getting rocky.” At Options Hypnosis, Schaffer makes it her job to give clients the tools to stay at the controls and resist re-engaging that handy button. There are many people who approach hypnosis with good deal of skepticism, which is an excellent indicator of an open mind, one that is ready to change patterns of behavior that have become counterproductive. We offer free consultations. Experience a hypnotic session for yourself, and discover how much more empowered you feel, not just about losing weight, but in others areas of your life as well. HNT Program for Health and Weight Management™
T
he national HNT Program for Health and Weight Management™ is a medically supervised weight loss program—with proven results—for individuals wanting to lose 10 to 300 pounds. HNT is a 20-week program that blends medical monitoring and intensive lifestyle counseling through weekly educational group classes. The program uses the Health One meal replacement in combination with fruits and vegetables to achieve rapid weight loss that is also safe and effective. Tina Graves, health coach/program manager for HNT Pennyslvania, says HNT has a proven track record of success as cited in The Journal of Diabetes Science and Technology and results comparable to gastric banding. “The study found patients having an average starting BMI (Body Mass Index) of 38 lost an average of 21.4 percent of their initial body weight, and if they stayed in the HNT program for one year they kept off an average of 16.4 percent of their weight.” Health One is different than many other meal replacements on the market today. It is designed to be baked, cooked, blended and even frozen. Health One can be made into pizza, noodles, chips, soups, pancakes, muffins, and cakes just to name a few foods. The variety and great taste allows patients to stay on the meal plan until they reach their goal weight. HNT is devoted to empowering individuals with the tools and skills they need to change their eating and exercise habits, improve their lifestyle, and succeed at losing weight. Those interested in participating may attend a free informational session. To register or to receive more information, contact Graves at 484-707-1012 or e-mail tgraves@ myhealthone.com.

PILATES FOR WEIGHT LOSS Strengthen, Lengthen and Tone by Victoria Everman
Once a favorite of 1930s New York City dancers George Balanchine and Martha Graham, Pilates now has 10 million followers in the United States alone.
Pilates, similar to yoga in its concentration on breathing, was developed by Joseph Pilates in just the past century. While it’s rare to break much of a sweat during a session, with its focus on major muscle groups and slow, intentional movements, Pilates has become a popular practice for effecting weight loss.
are easily portable, yet create a considerable amount of challenging resistance to help firm and tone. The body ring, well known among Pilates enthusiasts, is another resistance tool used during mat exercise, often focusing on the lower body and core muscles.
“P
One of the best ways to look and feel thinner is to maintain good posture. Pilates helps create better posture by firming not only the abs, but the back, as well. “All Pilates work is performed with proper alignment and attention to posture. By establishing optimal spinal alignment, you can facilitate better circulation, improved lymphatic flow and increased stamina of the muscles along the spine,” says Ungaro. Not only will toned spinal muscles help with continued weight loss vis-à-vis increased metabolism, standing up straight will automatically make a person appear thinner, thereby increasing one’s confidence, as well. “You will stand taller, hold your waist tighter and feel stronger,” she adds.
ilates can help to build and maintain lean muscle mass while you are losing weight, realign posture as the body’s center of gravity changes, promote long elegant posture and graceful flowing movement, and keep you centered and energized— all at the same time,” explains Jillian Hessel, a Los Angeles-based Pilates teacher with 26 years’ experience. “I find that many people are successfully losing weight with Pilates because they become much more aware of their bodies, and in turn, treat them better and make better food choices,” adds Ana Cabán, a Pilates fitness expert who has operated studios on both coasts. After chatting with a panel of pros and diving into the fitness method’s history, we arrived at the top five ways to become trim and toned by practicing Pilates.

Burn More Calories Creating muscle mass is one of the best ways to increase calorie-burning potential. Pilates can help accomplish that in spades. “Simply stated, Pilates is strength training,” says Alycea Ungaro, owner of Real Pilates, in New York City. “We work with resistance to increase strength and hence, muscle mass. Using springs and different apparatus to increase the load to the muscles, we can affect a metabolic increase by building lean muscle mass.” Individuals can add a variety of tools to a basic Pilates mat routine to help tone muscles all over and avoid boredom. “I enjoy adding bands, body rings and light weights to my routine because it provides variety and challenges muscles in a different way,” says Cabán. Craft Core Muscles Pilates is all about core strength—front and side abdominals and the entire back. Toned abs and a strong back help to prevent injury, improve posture, reduce lower back pain and even promote proper bowel function. But the most popular result is flat abdominals. “Pilates teaches people how to use their abdominals correctly—how to contract the abdominal wall, rather than let it distend. This simple mechanism can be used 24/7 in your daily life. That
is the single reason that Pilates flattens abs so quickly,” comments Ungaro.
Improve Eating Habits “The increased body awareness will also make you less likely to indulge in unhealthy eating habits,” notes Ungaro. Experiencing the improvements to your body and of what it’s capable is incredibly motivating. “You will have a new respect for your body and be more likely to take better care of it,” she says.
Complete with Cardio No weight loss regimen is complete without cardiovascular work. Combining the strength training of Pilates and a consistent cardio session works to help you lose weight and tone up nearly twice as fast as doing either routine on its own. Walking up hills works, or to add variety and challenge, “Consider swimming, running or the elliptical machine,” suggests Ungaro. “Steady-state activity is great for cardio conditioning.” Victoria Everman, a freelance writer in San Francisco, California, contributes to Gaiam. com, from which this was adapted.

Physical Methods for Results
S
tacey Redfield, the owner of the Physical Methods Pilates studio in Bethlehem, has been producing strong, healthy bodies for the past 11 years using the Pilates machines as her main focus. “If Pilates didn’t work, people would not keep coming back,” states Redfield. “I teach a challenging group of exercises, circuit style, rotating my clients from one machine to another over the course of a one hour class. It’s not just the exercises that give you results, but it’s where you focus that makes Pilates effective.” Pilates corrects the posture, which returns the muscles to their correct anatomical position, which allows the body to work more efficiently. Strong posture creates a balance in the body, allowing you to stand taller and move more gracefully. “Breathing is so important,” adds Redfield. “Most people don’t realize how many muscles are needed to do something as simple as taking a breath. Those muscles need to be strengthened just as much as any other muscle and the only way to do that is to breathe.” Redfield recommends that new students begin with a few private lessons to become familiar with her methodology, the machines, and the Pilates vocabulary. “Pilates is hard work but my classes are so much fun. I think that is why many of my clients have been with me since I began teaching 11 years ago.” Physical Methods is located at 653 E Broad Street in Bethlehem. Chicken broth-based soups may also boost immunity and help battle the sniffles, according to researchers at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. Dr. Stephen Rennard and his colleagues found that properties of chicken soup help soothe sore throats and ease other cold symptoms. Soups made with vegetable broths likewise offer anti-inflammatory properties and comforting goodness, maintains green living expert Annie B. Bond. Inspired by Haedrich’s book, Bond added her own spin to this soup for her daughter.

This recipe is adapted from The Cleaner Plate Club: More Than 100 Recipes for Real Food Your Kids Will Love, by Beth Bader and Ali Benjamin. “Parmesan rinds are the secret to a rich flavor in nearly any soup,” advises Bader, the mother of a 6-year-old. “When you finish up a wedge of Parmesan cheese, save the rind and freeze it for later use. When you add the rind to a hot soup, it will melt a bit and little pieces of Parmesan will blend into the soup. ” Tip: She finds farro, an ancient strain of grain, in the bulk foods aisle. 7STEPS TO THRIVE
Run with the Pack
by Brendan Brazier The beauty of a good diet is that the right foods will not only help us overcome nutritional stress, but also other negative stressors, like pollution and environmental toxins. Plus, we’ll be able to better perform during positive demands like exercise and educational activities. My recommended action plan consists of seven easy steps. Step One. Examine your current diet. What things are you eating that might be reducing your energy or aren’t supporting your health and fitness goals? Step Two. Prepare for success by researching and listing foods that are conducive to thriving. Step Three. Graze throughout the day. Eating several small meals helps maintain energy levels, eases digestive strain and spreads nutrients to sustain us all day. Step Four. Drink a nutritious smoothie each day—it delivers whole food nutrition that’s easy on the digestive system and provides lasting energy. Here is a go-to favorite.
Mango Cashew Smoothie ½ cup powdered hemp protein 1 cup mango, fresh, frozen or pulp ½ cup soaked raw cashews ½ tsp vanilla extract 1 Tbsp maple syrup (or agave nectar) 1½ cups purified water ½ cup ice Purée all ingredients in a blender until smooth. Step Five. Eat a big, green salad every day; these are a staple when eating to thrive. Step Six. Eat a raw energy bar every day; it’s an easy way to pack nutrition into a convenient, easy-tocarry form. Step Seven. Eat a substantial, balanced afternoon snack to head off hunger and overeating at evening meals. Consider healthy snacks—such as a handful of almonds, macadamia nuts or walnuts; a serving of organic carrots, celery or zucchini sticks; or an organic apple, pear or orange—instead of processed convenience foods. For more information, visit Brendan Brazier.com or join a free online program at ThriveIn30.com.

Within minutes, our nervous system starts to unwind. In a state of peaceful stillness, the ‘dial up’ to our higher self becomes accessible. This is the optimum state for healing to occur.” Ashana emphasizes that we are all interconnected, so any healing work we do on ourselves affects all of humanity. “As we raise our personal frequency, we can become conscious tuning forks for divine energies to pour through us,” she believes. “We’re all holding a piece of the web.”
Healing Through Song “Since the dawn of time, humans have been sharing song in their tribe,” says Zurich, Switzerland, recording artist, educator and filmmaker Michael Stillwater. “Pop songs are modern tribal songs, although we have mostly become a culture of consumers and spectators, rather than participants.” The founder of Inner Harmony Music and Song Without Borders, Stillwater’s is a strong voice in an emerging grassroots global movement devoted to helping people reclaim their inner song. “As a vocal art, singing is unique,” he advises. “It’s deeply connected to our sense of self.” He also notes that if our voice or singing is criticized in our developmental years, we may shut down our creative expression. “We then become like cave dwellers, hiding our voice; there are millions of vocal cave dwellers in our world,” he says. Finding your song—or chant or mantra—almost inevitably becomes integrated with a pathway for rediscovering one’s authentic self. “It’s about letting your voice become part of your own healing medicine,” says Stillwater. His film documentary, In Search of the Great Song, celebrates the use of creative vocal expression for healing and transformation.

INTERSPECIES FRIENDSHIPS
CROSSING BOUNDARIES FOR GOOD by April Thompson
B
efore Wally and Ann Collito, of North Attleborough, Massachusetts, had a chance to befriend the stray kitten that had appeared in their yard, the couple discovered that another caring being—a crow—had already done so. Over the next few months, the Collitos witnessed an incredible friendship develop between the crow and cat they respectively named Moses and Cassie. The pair romped in the grass, swatting gently at each other like they were born playmates, rather than sworn enemies. Moses often dropped nutritious worms and bugs in the kitten’s mouth, following it around like a protective parent. “If it wasn’t for the crow feeding and taking care of that cat, it would
have been dead a long time ago,” relates Wally Collito in a video posted at InterspeciesFriends.blogspot.com. “When the cat would start crossing the road, the crow would holler as if to say, ‘Don’t go in the road, you’re going to get hit.’ Sometimes she would get in front of her and push her back on the sidewalk. It had to be love or friendship.” The story of Moses and Cassie is not an anomaly, but rather an indication of the potential emotional bond between animals, according to Jennifer S. Holland, author of Unlikely Friendships: 47 Remarkable Stories from the Animal Kingdom. “A number of years ago, it was really taboo to attribute empathy to other animals,” she says, “but more scientists today are crossing

that line comfortably.” She explains that no one really knows what emotions animals experience or how, although people share the brain’s limbic system, considered the seat of emotions in humans, with other mammals. “There is no reason they wouldn’t have experiences similar to ours in terms of basic emotions,” Holland surmises. Holland’s new book is just one of a growing number of efforts to document the wild landscape of interspecies love, including blogs dedicated to the topic and countless children’s books; one of them, Cat and Crow, by Lisa Fleming, immortalizes Moses and Cassie. “Such stories give us a sense of hope at a time when there is a lot of negativity in the world,” observes Holland. “I think people are looking for a reprieve.”
Mother Love Knows No Bounds A variety of recent studies by the likes of the University of Cambridge and Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology indicate that empathy and altruism may be characteristics of species ranging from squirrels to sea lions. Consider the adventures of Finnegan, a squirrel that had fallen out of its nest and into the loving abode of Seattle resident Debby Cantlon. Her pregnant papillon, Mademoiselle Giselle, adopted the injured squirrel, pulling its cage close to her own dog bed. Giselle continued to care for Finnegan after she had her own litter, literally nursing the squirrel back to health. “The drive to nurture and be nurtured is strong, particularly when an animal has lost its baby or parent. This story is a perfect example of the mothering instinct coming to life,”

says Holland. Like many human friendships, some unusual animal pairings develop out of the basic need for companionship. One well-known example is Tarra, an 8,700-pound former circus elephant retired to The Elephant Sanctuary, in Hohenwald, Tennessee. Elephants are known to pair up, but Tarra chose to instead bond with a rescued stray dog named Bella. The two became inseparable pals and Tarra proved to be no fair-weather friend: When Bella suffered a spinal cord injury, Tarra stood sentinel at the gate outside the sanctuary office, waiting three weeks for Bella before she could be carried outside for a happy reunion.
Model Behavior Seeing firsthand the positive outcomes that various interspecies pairings can yield, some animal trainers are using natural characteristics of one species to influence the behavior of another. A program at the Columbus Zoo, in Ohio, routinely taps into the Zen of dogs to boost the confidence of traveling cheetahs, which, although they are the fastest mammals on land, are also among the most skittish. Animal Programs Director Suzi Rapp has raised several baby cheetahs alongside puppies— most recently, a charismatic golden lab named Carlisle. Carlisle helps the cheetahs keep their cool when Rapp takes them on the road to make TV appearances in support of animal conservation efforts. “If there is a loud noise, the cheetahs will look to Carlisle for his reaction. The dog has a ‘whatever’ attitude that the cheetahs in turn adopt,” says Rapp, who notes that the program has been so successful she wouldn’t ever consider raising a cheetah without a canine again. “Because they were raised together, the cheetahs believe that Carlisle is one of their littermates and don’t think of him as a dog,” explains Rapp. “They cuddle, play and sleep together.” Rapp is quick to caution that an unknown adult dog thrown in with the cheetahs wouldn’t last long, however. Tales of mismatched orphans underscore the importance of introducing different species to each other while they’re young. Baloo, the bear, Leo, the lion,
