Here’s What Some of Our Customers Have to Say About Dr. Emu’s Rx for Pain:
“Through the years, accidents had left me with a crushed heel, seven herniated discs and a torn rotator cuff. I was spending $4,500 a month on medication prescriptions including for pain and became addicted to oxycontin. Finally, I decided not to allow drugs to control my life anymore.
“I have been using this for 3 months to relieve my arthritis pain and it has been a lifesaver on my bad days! LOVE it!”
I became intrigued by an upand-coming natural aid: Emu Oil. Out of personal necessity to get off drugs, aided by pain management doctors, other medical personnel, herbalists and lengthy research and development, I created the natural topical pain relief product, Dr. Emu’s Rx for Pain. It not only eased my pain within minutes, it also made my life more livable again. Since then, many physical therapists, chiropractors and pain management doctors have testified to its apparent effectiveness with their patients.” Darrell Hart,
founder and CEO of Everlasting Health

Jeffrey Mark Bablitz
“I ... was amazed at how good this is. It has taken away the pain from my hip/leg/ankle and reduced the swelling in my ankles I get every summer. Thank you!” Patty Mullins
“I was told about this by my doctor’s office. It truly helped my back and knee pain. It is a little costly but well worth the extra cost over others in discount stores. It works so well, I don’t even need to use it as much now. Thank you for bringing it to us.” Tony, Naples, FL

magine that you and some friends have the opportunity ride on a NASA spaceship with the mission of exploring deep space. This golden opportunity requires that the whole crew train in body, mind and spirit so that you are able to perform tasks necessary to maintain everyone’s welfare and safely return home. Occupying a limited area with others requires each crew member to discipline themselves to maintain a clean space, ensure all life support systems continue to function properly and execute their role flawlessly to ensure successful survival. Given the magnificence of this unfolding experience of a lifetime you doubtless would deem it worth your investment of time, effort and resources. What is so different about living on Planet Earth? We are living together on a bounded spaceship that came fully loaded with irreplaceable life support systems. Our unique Blue Planet is elegantly designed indeed, but the doubling of the population (yet again) since 1960 is set to exceed its carrying capacity with more than 7 billion people placing an unprecedented load on resources. To maintain our standard of living and comfort Americans as a nation are the greatest consumers of all; just five percent of the world’s population, we claim nearly a quarter of Earth’s resources for ourselves. If every human followed America’s example, the burden placed on our spaceship would long be past the point of no return. Some of today’s consumers refuse to do more with less, fearing a return to hunters and gatherers living in caves. Others believe against all scientific evidence that it’s impossible to destroy this beautiful home planet, so why not keep exploiting, destroying and contaminating every natural resource without regard for anything but personal profit? Some have even applied the phrase “environmental wacko” to describe good people acting conservatively. Following any of these fatally misinformed and imprudent voices will lead to the race’s selfdestruction. To the contrary, I am convinced that it’s still possible to live well if sustainability becomes our universal reality. At the moment we still have the luxury of making a conscious choice, but we may not much longer if an apocalyptic meltdown is thrust upon the world as a result of continuing widespread poor decisions and inaction… if we don’t change our ways today. On April 22, more than a billion people in 192 countries will again take action and recommit to honoring the planet on Earth Day. It’s become the world’s largest annual forum for recognizing that the health of Spaceship Earth is our most precious resource of all. I am inspired by the people you’ll meet in this month’s issue, including those organizing local Earth Day events (page 12). On this special day, human Earthlings will gather to perform acts of environmental kindness. We will plant trees, clean up roadside litter and trash in parks and rivers, shore up eroded stream banks, put up bird and bat houses and plant gardens for birds and butterflies. We will express our concern for stewarding our land, water and atmosphere; home to millions of other plants and animals, from single-celled algae to massive redwood trees; from tropical fruit bats to monstrous whales.
Such Earthlings are those I want on my crew,

he Yoga Loft will present two workshops with New York City yoga teacher Raghunath on Sunday, May 19. In his first workshop, Strong Foundations: Building Toward Mastery of Fearless Flight, from 2 to 4 p.m., participants will access the tools that will amplify their progress toward mastery of inversions and arm balances. They will chant, refine breath work, break down the postures and build-up toward power poses with a comprehensive understanding of the subtle dynamics of the asana. Practical Bhakti: A Talk about Cultivating Devotion will be held from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Since his youth, Raghunath was fascinated with Eastern thought and took his inspiration from Emerson, Gandhi, Thoreau, the Buddhist Sutras, the Bible and the Bhagavad-Gita. Over the years he has become an expert at taking the esoteric yoga philosophy and making it understandable and practical for the contemporary world. A Bus Pass to Green Well-Being
T
here’s a way to simultaneously help both Planet Earth and one’s own health, report scientists from Imperial College London, in England. The researchers examined four years of data from the country’s Department for Transport National Travel Survey beginning in 2005, the year before free bus passes were available for people ages 60 and older. The study team found that those with a pass were more likely to walk frequently and take more journeys by “active travel”— defined as walking, cycling or using public transport. Staying physically active helps maintain mental well-being, mobility and muscle strength in older people and reduces their risk of cardiovascular disease, falls and fractures. Previous research by Taiwan’s National Health Research Institutes published in The Lancet has shown that just 15 minutes of moderate daily exercise lowers the risk of death in people over 60 by 12 percent, and another study at Newcastle University found that 19 percent of Britain’s adults achieve their recommended amount of physical activity through active travel alone. Public health organizations in the UK believe that “incidental” exercise, such as walking to and from bus stops, may play a key role in helping seniors keep fit and reduce social exclusion.

Getting the Lead Out
T
he U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently redefined the “action level” for lead exposure in children. Youngsters are now considered at risk and qualify for careful medical monitoring if they have more than five micrograms per deciliter of lead in their blood—half the previous threshold. Lead poisoning can cause cognitive and behavioral problems, and the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends testing blood lead concentration levels at age 1 and again at 2, when concentrations peak. Most lead poisoning cases occur in substandard housing units, especially those with window frames still coated with lead-based paint banned since 1978. Families in dwellings built before 1950 should also be vigilant about lead. The Consumer Products Safety Commission cautions that home lead test kits sold online and at hardware stores may not be reliable enough to identify and remove sources of exposure. Professional contractors offer more accurate results. Children exhibiting blood lead levels above the new threshold are usually monitored, rather than treated with medications that carry serious risks. Once lead sources are removed, children’s blood lead levels typically return to a more normal range within weeks. The CDC confirms that rather than remedial treatment, the primary goal should be making sure children aren’t exposed to lead in the first place. Fortunately, the levels of most of America’s youngest children today are well below the revised action point, with average blood lead content of 1.8 micrograms, while school-age children, teenagers and adults face little risk.
Coffee and Vision Loss Linked
E
asing up on java consumption or switching to decaf may be a wise move for coffee lovers, according to a scientific paper published in Investigative Ophthalmology & Visual Science. The study links heavy consumption of the caffeinated beverage to an increased risk of developing exfoliation glaucoma, a condition in which fluid builds up inside the eye and puts pressure on the optic nerve. This leads to some vision loss and in serious cases, total blindness. Researchers obtained data from 78,977 women from the Nurses’ Health Study and 41,202 men from the Health Professionals Follow-Up Study that focused on caffeinated coffee, tea and cola servings. They found that drinking three or more cups of caffeinated coffee daily was linked with an increased risk of developing the eye condition, especially for women with a family history of glaucoma. However, the researchers did not find associations with consumption of decaffeinated tea, chocolate or coffee. “Because this is the first [such] study, confirmation of the U.S. results in other populations would be needed to lend more credence to the possibility that caffeinated coffee might be a modifiable risk factor for glaucoma,” says Doctor of Science Jae Hee Kang, of the Channing Division of Network Medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, in Boston, Massachusetts. “It may also lead to research into other dietary or lifestyle risk factors.”

Drinks Tied to Tooth Trouble
W
hen replacing lost fluids during or after a workout, consider how beverage choices can affect the health of teeth. A recent study published in General Dentistry, the journal of the Academy of General Dentistry, found that increased consumption of sports and energy drinks is causing irreversible damage to teeth, especially among adolescents. A reported 30 to 50 percent of U.S. teens regularly imbibe energy drinks, and as many as 62 percent down at least one sports drink a day. “Young adults consume these drinks assuming that they will improve their sports performance and energy levels and that they are ‘better’ than soda,” says Associate Professor Poonam Jain, lead author of the study, who serves as director of community and preventive dentistry at the Southern Illinois University School of Dental Medicine. “Most of these patients are shocked to learn that the drinks are essentially bathing their teeth with acid.” In testing the effect of acidity levels on samples of human tooth enamel immersed in 13 sports and nine energy beverages, researchers found that damage to enamel was evident after only five days of exposure. Moreover, energy drinks were twice as harmful as sports drinks. “These drinks erode or thin out the enamel of the teeth, leaving them more susceptible to decay and sensitivity,” says Jain.

Cleaning Up the Cloud The New York Times has reported that “cloud” data centers—which store YouTube videos, run Google searches and process eBay bids—use about 2 percent of all electricity in the nation. In some data centers, up to 90 percent of the energy is wasted. Now, an industry consortium called the Uptime Institute is sponsoring a “server roundup” and handing out rodeo belt buckles to the Internet company that can take the largest number of heat-producing, energy-hungry servers offline. Many centers expend as much or more energy in cooling their facilities as in computing and transmitting data. Sharing best practices has become common among data center pros. Facebook won the Institute’s Audacious Idea award last year for its Open Compute Project, which enabled both its server and data center designs to be open-sourced for anyone to access and improve upon. ecotip Gas Saver
Keep Bucks in Your Pocket at the Pump When mass transit isn’t an option, drivers have many ways to save money by coaxing more miles per gallon (mpg) from their vehicle. It’s easy to adopt some simple driving and maintenance habits. Slow down. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), driving at 55 mph instead of 65 mph can improve gas mileage by as much as 15 percent. Reduce excess weight. An extra 100 pounds of nonessential cargo in a vehicle could reduce mpg by up to 2 percent, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. Properly inflate tires. The increased surface area of the rubber in soft tires meeting the road creates ongoing drag and a greater demand on the engine. Keep the engine tuned. Regularly
check and refresh fluid levels, especially in colder regions where winter places additional stress on engine parts. While high-quality synthetic motor oil blends may protect the engine better than conventional oil, they don’t eliminate the need for regular oil changes, according to JiffyLube.com. The National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence notes that one misfiring spark plug can reduce fuel efficiency by up to 30 percent. Avoid rapid accelerations and braking. The EPA estimates that about half of the energy needed to power a car is consumed during acceleration, and fuel economy can be improved by as much as 10 percent by avoiding unnecessary braking. Keep the engine air filter clean. According to AAA.com, a clogged filter strains performance. In some cars, the filter can be easily checked by the owner; or drivers may ask a technician to do so during regular tune-ups.

Better Barters
Swapping Trash for Fresh Produce Mexico City’s innovative monthly Mercado del Trueque (barter market) in Chapultepec Park is a winning trifecta for citizens, local vegetable and plant vendors and the city’s secretariat of the environment. There, residents can exchange cardboard, paper, glass, aluminum, plastic bottles, electronic devices and other waste for paper chits that are redeemed at kiosks for vouchers worth points. The traders can then use the vouchers to buy tomatoes, potatoes, lettuce, lemons and other produce from participating farmers from surrounding districts. Mexico produces 40 million tons of garbage annually, but only recycles about 15 percent. With this barter system, farmers have gained a new place to sell their produce and earn extra income, while the materials collected are processed for industrial reuse. Source: IPSNews.net

Earth Music Saving Nature’s Wild Symphony by Bernie Krause
W
e may be drawn to the sounds of waves or woodland streams or beguiled by the subtle winds and creature voices of the desert or mountains. Whatever captures our imagination, as we actively listen, something in a wild animal’s repertoire will cause us to catch our breath. Nature teems with a vigorous resonance that is as complete and expansive as it is delicately balanced. Every place on the planet populated by plants and wild animals is a concert hall, with a unique orchestra performing an unmatched symphony. Each resident species possesses its own preferred sonic bandwidth—to blend or contrast—akin to how stringed, woodwind, brass and percussion instruments stake out acoustic territory in an orchestral masterpiece. Into Earth’s daily round are embedded the dawn and daytime, evening and nighttime choruses. Whatever the

purpose of a creature’s aural signal— mating, protecting territory, capturing food, group defense, play or social contact—it must be audible and free from human acoustical interference if the species is to successfully function. During the last half of the 20th century, I recorded the wild sounds of more than 15,000 species and 4,500 hours of natural ambience. Nearly 50 percent of these land, sea and sky habitats have since then become seriously compromised, if not biophonically silent. The loss of representative habitats due to human presence and noise has resulted in declines in the density and diversity of creatures large and small that contribute to healthy natural soundscapes. Fortunately, in the absence of human habitation, these places can become lively again. Fellow British soundscape ecologist Peter Cusack wrote of the restoration of wildlife 20

years after the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear catastrophe in the Ukraine: “Animals and birds absent for many decades— wolves, moose, white-tailed eagles, black storks—have moved back, and the Chernobyl [human] exclusion zone is now one of Europe’s prime wildlife sites. The species-rich dawn chorus is one of Chernobyl’s definitive sounds… its nighttime concerts equally spectacular.” In 1968, 45 percent of the oldgrowth forests in the contiguous United States were still standing; by 2011 it was less than 2 percent. Before the forest echoes die, we may want to step back for a moment and listen carefully to the chorus of the natural world where rivers of sound flow, ranging from crickets, frogs and insects to wrens, condors, cheetahs, wolves— and us. Otherwise we are denying ourselves the fullest experience of that which is essential to our spiritual and psychological health. The whisper of every leaf and creature’s song implores us to love and care for the delicate tapestry of the biophony that was the first music our species ever heard. It told us that we are part of a single, fragile biological system; voices in an orchestra of many, with no more important cause than the celebration of life itself. Healing the Ecosystem Within A Conversation with Bioneers Co-Founder Nina Simons by Brita Belli
B
ioneers are innovators from all walks of life, seeking to make the world a better place in ways that respect the Earth and all of its inhabitants. Their organization, considered a “network of networks,” connects people and ideas through their annual National Bioneers Conference, local community action groups and original multimedia productions, including the award-winning “Revolution from the Heart of Nature” radio series. Bioneers co-founder Nina Simons, co-editor of Moonrise: The Power of Women Leading from the Heart, talked with Natural Awakenings about the role each of us plays today in creating a more sustainable tomorrow.
How can we be hopeful about the state of the Earth? I feel that we each need to cultivate a balanced view. It’s important to hold what I call a “both/ and” awareness, which recognizes how seriously our planet’s life support systems are compromised and how intensive the demand is for us to engage in reversing their deterioration. At the same time, I remain deeply hopeful, because so many people are awakening to the urgency of the issues we face and many more are now mobilizing to act in positive ways.
Does this mean that you see a societal shift toward a better way of thinking?

Our state of mind is directly affected by where we place our attention. If our primary source of information is mainstream media, then it’s easy to feel depressed and hopeless. Each of us would benefit from limiting our daily media intake, because it influences our inner story and impacts how we nourish our psyches, stories and visions. One of the greatest medicines for despair is action. When we act on behalf of what we love and those in need, it can help restore gratitude, a sense of faith and a more balanced view. That’s why natural disasters often elicit the best kinds of responses human beings can offer: compassion, empathy and a desire to generously contribute to solutions.
To what extent does healing the Earth depend on healing ourselves? We co-created the current political, economic, energy, industrial and food production systems based on competition and hierarchies that are wreaking havoc on Planet Earth and on our collective quality of life and future survival. As long as we participate in them, we perpetuate them. We have an immense opportunity to reinvent our selves and society’s systems right now. Our culture conditions us to be hard on ourselves, judging and comparing our talents and actions while often valuing ourselves primarily based on our work or relationships. To be the
most effective change agents we can be, I believe we need to reverse these patterns and learn to consider ourselves and all of life as sacred and inherently worthy of love. One of the most powerful things each of us can do at this pivotal point is to claim full responsibility for our inner “story-scape”—to shift our personal story about the impacts we’re capable of having, what our capacity for action really is and how bringing ourselves in service to life at this moment can be meaningful, joyful and effective.
Isn’t there often a conflict between what people believe and what they do? We each contain a complex ecosystem within us. The more we can become conscious of cultivating ourselves to be authentically and fully in heartfelt service to what we love, the better we can show up on behalf of the Earth and the people and creatures with whom we share it as home.
Do you see women playing a particular role in this transformation? While every person is a unique mix of both masculine and feminine qualities, I think that women as a whole have a deeply embedded coding that inclines us to be especially strong in caring, compassion and collaboration. As leadership capacities, I believe these three—and connecting across differences—may be among the most essential to resilience. Our future as a species will clearly benefit from more women finding their voice, truth and connections to power. The more women that can articulate their individual experiences in support of an inclusive collective vision, the more we can begin to tip our institutions, culture and the men we love to increasingly value these “feminine traits,” which I refer to as relational intelligence. For a long time, we have perpetuated a fatally flawed culture that has put intellect first. It’s past time that we all put the wisdom of our hearts, bodies and intuition first, with intellect in a supporting role. Freelance writer Brita Belli is the editor of E-The Environmental Magazine. An Owner’s Perspective by Beth Davis

ohn McVicker first became interested in electric vehicles (EV) in 2007, while RC (radio-controlled) car racing with
his son, Adam. The scale model cars powered by small but powerful electric motors left him curious about what was being done on a larger scale. He began doing some research and discovered a website with information about the Chevrolet Volt concept car, which made its debut at the January 2007 North American International Auto Show, becoming the first-ever series plug-in hybrid concept car shown by a major car manufacturer. Although it was just a concept car at the time, it peaked his interest and he followed its progress until its official debut in late 2010. McVicker says he was a fan before it had even hit the road. “I had done enough research that I knew what to expect,” he says. “Everything about it just made sense in terms of energy efficiency. It was almost like an RC car in real life.” He knew he wanted to purchase the EV, but he also knew it had to be the right time. “It was a new model in late 2010 so everybody following it wanted it,” he explains. “I wanted to wait it out, get some feedback on its quality and make a plan.” So, that’s exactly what he did. McVicker bought his 2011 Chevy Volt in July 2012 after a nearly year-long budgeting process to try to find the best deal possible. And he saved a bundle. The car he purchased retailed for $44,000 and he paid $25,000 (after rebates). How did he do it? He says that the first thing he did was get a General Motors credit card that earned him 5 percent cash

back toward vehicle purchases. Over the course of one year, he was able to accumulate $1,000. He also received a flier from his GM card offering an additional $1,500 off the price of a car. He got a federal tax credit of $7,500, a $3,500 rebate from the state of Pennsylvania and because he purchased the car in 2012, the dealer knocked $5,000 off the price of the 2011 model. That’s a savings of $19,000. McVicker says, “Today, Chevy offers some really good deals for leasing a Volt.” Named Motor Trend’s 2011 Car of the Year. The Volt is a four-seat, four-door hatchback with a lithium-ion battery pack that can power the cars 149-horsepower electric motor by itself for an estimated 40 miles in the city. McVicker has reached up to 49 miles on a charge. After that, the gasoline-powered inline-4 engine primarily supplies electricity to the motor for as many as 300 additional miles. The battery can be charged by plugging it into a 120- or 240-volt residential electrical outlet using the charging cord that is provided—no external charging station is required. As a member of a computer consulting company, McVicker says that he drives from 7 to 70 miles to appointments and needs a car that will get him to both, and the Volt delivers. “I can travel 140 miles and burn very little gasoline—maybe oneand-a-half gallons—and it costs about $1.50 in electricity for those 140-mile days,” he notes. Some places even have plugins so that he can recharge, if necessary. McVicker also says that more people will consider buying EVs and plug-in hybrids once workplaces start to offer plug-in options for them. McVicker adds that it also feels good on the road. “The drive is not only quiet, but smooth,” he says. “I have no complaints.” Some EV and Volt owners also are supplementing their electricity use with solar photovoltaic (PV) systems, and McVicker is no exception. In December, he added an entirely USA-made 8KW solar array to his home to drop his family’s electricity usage per month and at the same time he “fuels at home” with American-made energy. Although EVs have not been without some controversy over the years, McVicker encourages others to take a closer look at EVs and plug-in hybrids and understand the difference between political myth and fact. “It was incredibly disheartening that many of our country’s politicians made this transformative locally-made vehicle a political football,” he said. “I like that the Chevy Volt is an American car made by an American car company,” he says. “According to a Computerworld.com article from September of 2012, General Motors is insourcing the majority of its IT work to a new innovation center and hiring 500 IT positions in Austin TX. I feel good about buying a vehicle that supports American jobs and American energy. The car saves us money on gas, it’s roomy, quiet and safe. I couldn’t be happier. My wife is considering getting one for herself this year. We’ll be looking for a good deal, of course.” For more information, McVicker recommends GM-Volt.com, Insideevs.com and GreenCarReports.com.

Zoe Weil portrait by Robert Shetterly
“I believe that it is incredibly irresponsible for America’s educators and policymakers not to provide people with the knowledge of interconnected global issues, plus the skills and tools to become creative problem solvers and motivated change makers in whatever fields they pursue,” says Weil. Weil points to four primary elements that comprise a humane education: providing information about current issues in age-appropriate ways; fostering the Three C’s of curiosity, creativity and critical thinking; instilling the Three R’s of reverence, respect and responsibility; and ensuring access to both positive choices and the necessary tools for problem solving. “These elements enable students to take all that they learn and use it with reverence and a sense of responsibility,” says Weil. Her institute offers the only master’s degrees in humane education that this approach requires, with complementary in-class and online programs for young people and adults. Her determined vision is slowly becoming a reality as teachers become familiar with these concepts and integrate them into hands-on, project-based learning that crosses disciplines and better marries school experiences with real-life lessons.

“
hat is the purpose of education?” That’s a question Zoe Weil frequently revisits with her workshop audiences. As co-founder and President of the Institute for Humane Education (IHE), Weil has spent most of her adult life researching the answer. Her conclusion is that the U.S. Department of Education’s present goal of preparing graduates to “compete in the global economy” is far too myopic for our times. Weil’s firsthand research, which grounds her book, The Power and Promise of Humane Education, has led her to forward the idea that the goal should be inspiring generations of “solutionaries” prepared to joyfully and enthusiastically meet the challenges of world problems.
Make the Extraordinary Ordinary
Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Seymour Papert, a renowned educator and computer scientist, has conducted in-depth research in how worthy real-world topics get students excited about what they learn. They increase their tendency to dig more deeply and expand their interest in a wide array of subjects as they better retain what they learn, become more confident in trusting their own judgment and make the connections needed to broadly apply their knowledge. Young people learn how to collaborate and improve their social and group speaking skills, including with adults. According to Papert, project-based learning improves test scores and reduces absenteeism and disciplinary prob-

Telling Transformation
Papert’s observations were affirmed by middle school students at Voyagers’ Community School, in Farmingdale, New Jersey, in one of the IHE 10-week online classes—Most Good, Least Harm—in April 2012. “Initially, students were intimidated and underestimated their ability to express their thoughts and concerns or debate issues with the adult participants. That challenge faded quickly,” remarks Karen Giuffre, founder and director of the progressive day school. Answering the Call
Children or adults that participate in activities such as those created by IHE or the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS) Challenge 20/20 are developing what Peggy Holman describes as “change literacy”, the capacity to be effectively present amid a changing set of circumstances. Holman, an adjunct professional lecturer at American University’s School of Public Affairs, in Washington, D.C., is co-founder of the Open Space Institute-US, which fosters whole-system engagement, and author of Engaging Emergence. “Conversational literacy—the capacity to talk and interact in creative ways with others that are very different from us—is our birthright. However, change literacy, a necessary skill for future leaders, is learned via curiosity,” advises Holman. “In my experience, children grasp it more quickly than adults, because authentic expression and curiosity come naturally to them. Children don’t have a long history, and so are naturally more present when engaged in exploring things that matter.” Global problems of deforestation, peacekeeping, conflict prevention, terrorism, water pollution and shortages, natural disasters and mitigation, global warming, education for all, biodiversity, ecosystem losses and global infectious diseases aren’t yet subjects found in a normal curriculum for grades five through nine. However, the Internet-based Challenge 20/20 program now has youth in nearly 120 independent and traditional schools throughout the United States working on solutions that can be implemented both locally and globally. “Challenge 20/20 partners American schools at any grade level [K-12] with counterpart schools in other countries, free natural awakenings

Rest in Peace Sustainable Burials Honor Life by Brita Belli
H
umans are conditioned to the conventional rituals of handling death—the embalmed body in a casket or ashes sealed in an urn, a procession of vehicles to the burial site, solemnly gathering and scattering flowers as the remains are lowered into the earth. Many times, planning details are abdicated to the judgment of funeral directors. The notion of green burials envisions something different: a ceremony that engages family members’ ecovalues and nature in a more intimate, sustainable process favoring biodegradable caskets and no toxic chemicals. The movement is gaining in popularity; in 2011, some 300 U.S. funeral homes offered green burial options, up from only 12 in 2008.
High Impact of Tradition
tional Cancer Institute found that exposure to formaldehyde over a career of embalming put funeral home workers at significantly increased risk for mortality from myeloid leukemia, a cancer of the blood cells. Alternatives include formaldehyde-free preservatives made from essential oils, and dry ice. Significant resources are consumed in manufacturing caskets and vaults and maintaining cemetery grass. “A few years back I calculated that we bury enough metal in caskets to rebuild the Golden Gate Bridge each year and put so much concrete in the ground via burial vaults we could build a two-lane highway halfway across the country,” says Joe Sehee, founder of the Green Burial Council. The council certifies and lists cemeteries, funeral homes and casket companies that forgo chemicals and offer natural landscapes. The goal is for burials to leave as little impact as possible on the planet.
Traditional American burial practices make a sizeable environmental footprint and also pose health risks. The Greener Plots carcinogenic embalming fluid—formGreensprings Natural Cemetery Prealdehyde—is a well-known hazard. look like a cemetery. Its native grasses and mature trees come alive with color each autumn. Wildflowers bloom in the spring and birds build their nests in treetop boughs. “Most contemporary cemeteries are biological deserts,” observes Greensprings spokesperson and science writer Mary Woodsen. In contrast, Greensprings’ 100 acres are surrounded by 8,000 acres of protected forests. Loved ones may be buried in coffins from locally produced timber, or in shrouds—either professionally made or from a favorite blanket or quilt. Biodegradable caskets may be constructed of pine, cardboard, bamboo, formaldehyde-free plywood or hand-woven willow or wicker. LastThings.net even offers free plans to make a simple coffin. Instead of a machine, family members and friends ceremonially take hold of straps and lower the casket into a concrete vault themselves. Natural, flat fieldstones honor loved ones. “People feel, ‘I was part of this,’” says Woodsen.
Cremation Options
Debate exists over the ecological impact of cremation—a practice expected to be chosen as the end-of-life choice for as many as 46 percent of Americans by 2015. While it reduces the use of large, resource-intensive burial plots, each traditionally cremated body releases 110 pounds of greenhouse gases and other pollutants, including carbon dioxide and monoxide, nitrogen oxides, sulfur dioxide, mercury and other metals. The Bio Cremation greener alternative—using 95 percent water and 5 percent of an alkali instead of flames and fossil fuels—requires eight times less energy as fire-based cremation, produces no dangerous byproducts and still yields ashes from the remaining bones. To find the states that have approved the process, visit the legislative section at BioCremationInfo.com. Biodegradable urns are also available, including cornstarch bags accented with leaves and petals, sculpted natural salt containers and baskets made of virgin palm. Sandcastle urns
are suited for home display or ocean burial (InTheLightUrns.com). Memorial blown-glass artwork is another option for remains (Tropical GlassDesign.com). Scattering ashes—whether casting them into the air or over a body of water, burying them or raking them into the soil—provides an intimate burial experience and has minimal environmental consequences. Sehee says it’s legal on private land and also allowed in some parks. “It rarely does harm to the ecosystem,” he says. “Calling your local park agency is a great idea. Many allow for scattering and some without a fee.”
Burial at Sea
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency governs the disposal of cremated remains at sea—it must take place at least three nautical miles from land and may include artful flowers and wreaths of decomposable materials. Even noncremated remains may be buried at sea, provided it takes place at the same distance from land in water that is between 600 and 1,800 feet deep, depending on the location. Another sea burial option is offered by Eternal Reefs, a company that mixes remains into liquid concrete as the centerpiece of a personalized reef ball, lowered to the ocean floor to provide a home for marine life. Before the boat heads out, family members are invited to press handprints into the wet concrete and to decorate the ball with shells and other mementos. Reef balls can hold from one to four people, plus a pet. Sites are currently available off the Florida, New Jersey and Texas shorelines and can be revisited at any time. “We don’t look at it as a funeral,” remarks CEO George Frankel. “We’re months or years removed from the passing. This is a celebration of life.” Brita Belli is the editor of E-The Environmental Magazine and author of The Autism Puzzle: Connecting the Dots Between Environmental Toxins and Rising Autism Rates. Final Rest in a Green Meadow
G
reen Meadow at Fountain Hill Cemetery is a natural burial ground where remains are returned to the earth as simply and directly as possible. The first of its kind in the Lehigh Valley, the goal is to create a beautiful and respectful place to allow the body to degrade naturally and rejoin earth’s elements, perpetuating the natural cycle of life and death, of dissolution and rebirth. The burial process uses what remains of life to regenerate new life, to return dust to dust. Unlike traditional cemeteries, Green Meadow prohibits practices that prevent a body’s natural reunion with the earth, including burial vaults, metal caskets and chemical embalming. In their place they allow biodegradable caskets and cloth shrouds. Upright headstones are not permitted; however, ground level fieldstone and other natural native rock markers are allowed. Maintenance of the grounds at Green Meadow also differs from traditional cemeteries. The meadow is planted with native wildflowers eliminating the need for lawn care. Plots are not pre-assigned except for family considerations for existing sites. New plots are selected in succession to recent burials. This allows for less environmental disturbance of the meadow and maintains a peaceful, contiguous native wildflower landscape. Fountain Hill Cemetery is located at 1121 Graham Street, Bethlehem. Respecting Your Wishes
T
he Nicos C. Elias funeral home in Allentown offers several different options for green funerals, ranging from full services with visitation to simple graveside services. The packages are designed to help make funeral planning easier, while creating a personalized, meaningful ceremony that respects all faiths and burial preferences. In general terms, green options involve holding the deceased’s remains without embalming (no toxic chemicals). Burial caskets options include a choice of a biodegradable sea grass, willow, bamboo, all-wood, or even cardboard caskets which are designed to return the remains to the elements of the earth. Also offered are meaningful celebrations of life for survivors. Options do not need to be all-green or not-green; different tiers of green contribute to a more environmentally-friendly send-off. Cremation is generally not considered green because of the large amounts of non-renewable fossil fuels used during the cremation process. It is helpful, however, in the sense that land is not being used for burial. For those choosing cremation, the funeral home offers several biodegradable urns which are suitable for burial in the earth or water. Some of these have perennial flower seeds attached which will bloom wildflowers each year in honor of your loved one. Nicos C. Elias Funeral Home is located at 1227 W. Hamilton Street in Allentown. RECYCLING EVERYDAY REFUSE What Happens after the Blue Bin is Emptied by Avery Mack
E
ach blue recycle bin filled with plastic, aluminum, glass, paper and cardboard helps the environment, because it reduces landfill, takes less energy to repurpose materials than to make new ones and gently reminds us that thoughtful consumption is healthier for people and the planet. But what do all those recyclables turn into?

fabric, is used throughout our collection. Each fully recycled PET garment reuses about two-and-a-half 20-ounce plastic pop bottles.” Patagonia customers are encouraged to return their old coat when buying a new one. Coats in good condition are given to people in need; the PET fleece lining from retired coats is sent to ReFleece, in Somerville, Massachusetts, where it is cleaned and turned into recyclable protective cases for iPads, e-readers and cell phones. “We expect to make 10,000 cases this year from 2,000 jackets,” says Jennifer Fellers, ReFleece’s CEO. “We use low heat to press the cases into shape.” Vancouver, Canada, which plans to be the greenest city in the world by 2020, includes recycled plastic from bags and water bottles in laying down warm asphalt mix for roads because it uses less fuel to keep the tar at a pourable temperature. Switching from traditional hot asphalt technology also reduces emissions.
Plastic milk jugs turn into colorful playthings at Green Toys, of Mill Valley, California. Repurposing one pound of recycled milk jugs instead of making new plastic saves enough energy to run a computer for a month. All packaging is made from recycled content and printed with soy ink, so it can go into the blue bin again. GreenToys.com’s online counter shows the number of containers recycled—more than 10 million to date. Fila Golf’s Principal Designer Nancy Robitaille says, “Recycled PET (polyethylene terephthalate), a Transforming Aluminum core Fila cooling 38 Lehigh Valley www.healthylehighvalley.com
In 2012, Do Something.org partnered with Alcoa to challenge teens to recycle aluminum cans. For every 50 cans collected during a two-month period, they were awarded a chance to win a $5,000 scholarship. The sponsors note that recycling one can saves enough energy to light a 100-watt bulb for 20 hours. The final total was 1,152,569 cans kept out of landfills. “Aluminum can be recycled an infinite number of times,” says Beth Schmitt, director of recycling programs for Alcoa, which has centers nationwide and cash-back programs for community fundraisers. “We remelt the collected cans, then roll out coils of new can sheets. This process can be repeated without any loss of strength—that’s why we call aluminum the ‘miracle metal.’ If every American recycled just one more can per week, we would remove 17 billion cans from landfills each year.” Wine bottles become designer drinking glasses at Rolf Glass, in Mount Pleasant, Pennsylvania. “Our designs give used bottles a second life,” says owner Rolf Poeting. Refresh Glass, of Phoenix, Arizona, salvages and preps the bottles. “Then, our glass cutting and diamond-wheel engraving technology transforms them into sophisticated Glacier Glass,” continues Poeting. “This seems to be a trend in many industries, to find additional uses for another company’s recycled products.” Rewined, of Charleston, South Carolina, also exemplifies this principle. It uses wine bottles to hold their soy-based, cotton-wicked candles, which provide 60 to 80 hours of winescented burn.
Second Life for Paper
Purina’s Yesterday’s News and Second Nature litter for cats and dogs, respectively, is made from recycled paper and absorbs waste upward from the bottom of the litter box for easier cleaning. The unscented litter pellets are three times as
absorbent as clay, non-toxic and nearly dust-free. Hedgehogs, mice, gerbils, hamsters, guinea pigs and reptiles also like Yesterday’s News for bedding. On average, 44 million pounds of paper are annually recycled for these products. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, the United States annually generates 11 million tons of asphalt shingle waste, mostly from re-roofing tear-offs and new installation scrap, comprising 8 percent of construction waste. Each recycled ton saves a barrel of oil. OFIC North America, of Fredericksburg, Virginia, creates its Ondura corrugated roofing from old newspapers or magazines and cardboard, made durable by infusing it with asphalt. It’s placed atop existing roofs, which means no discarded shingles. Each day, 40 to 50 tons of recycled paper goods find new life in Ondura products, available at most home improvement stores. Sound inside Buick Lacrosse and Verano vehicles is dampened via a ceiling material made partly from reused cardboard shipping boxes. Paint sludge from General Motors’ Lansing, Michigan, Grand River assembly plant becomes durable plastic shipping containers for Chevrolet Volt and Cruze engine components. Some 200 miles of absorbent polypropylene sleeves, used to soak up a recent oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, were converted into air deflectors for the Volt, preventing 212,500 pounds of waste from entering landfills. As part of its community outreach, 250 shipping crates from GM’s Orion assembly plant became raised garden beds for a Southwest Detroit community garden. A local entrepreneur turned donated sound absorption material into coats that also serve as sleeping bags for the homeless.
Old Tires Transformed
Welcome to Pennsylvania America Dumps Here
S
ince at least 1992, Pennsylvania has been the largest importer of waste, with Virginia a distant 2nd. Of all the municipal solid waste that crosses state lines for disposal, 23 percent comes to Pennsylvania. In 2003, Pennsylvania accepted waste from 28 states (including DC), plus Puerto Rico and Canada. 94% of these imports were from New Jersey and New York. Pennsylvania’s Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) has permitted waste facilities in the state to accept three times as much waste per year as Pennsylvania generates. This map does not include the many landfills and incinerators which are either closed or which were proposed, but defeated. It also does not include waste transfer stations, or facilities for fly ash, hazardous waste or medical wastes.
Municipal Solid Waste Landfills (49 existing; 3 proposed) Residual Waste Landfills (4 existing, including the Harrisburg ash dump; 1 proposed) Construction & Demolition Waste Landfills (6 existing; 1 proposed). Municipal Solid Waste Incinerators (6 existing). Solid symbols are existing facilities; Hollow ones are proposed.
The Rubber Manufacturers Association reports that Americans discard 300 million tires each year, each one having consumed about seven gallons of oil in its manufacture and poised to add to Earth’s landfills. Lehigh Technologies’ micronized rubber powder (MRP), made by freeze-drying discarded tires and pulverizing them into a fine powder, changes the equation. MRP is now used in many items, from new tires, roads and building materials to shoes. It feels good to place used items in the blue bin instead of the trash, knowing that more and more companies are helping to put these resources to good use.
Waste imports can be halted dramatically if Pennsylvania legislators did the following: (without needing federal legislation to deal with the Interstate Commerce Clause) Rescind the excess permitted yearly volume at PA landfills and incinerators, rolling it back to the amount of waste that is actually dumped in the state. Roll that level back further – at about 10% a year – until it reaches the amount of waste generated yearly by Pennsylvanians. Currently, Pennsylvania receives nearly twice as much as it generates. Plan further reductions to accommodate source reduction, composting and recycling. This plan would stretch out the life of our landfills, filling them slower and reducing the need for expansions.

A Good Spring Cleaning Flushes Out Fats and Toxins by ann louise gittleman
S
pring—when the natural world reawakens and bursts with renewed energy—is an ideal season to clean up our act. A cleansing diet to eliminate toxins from our body is as much a rite of spring as sweeping debris from our home. In my nutrition practice, I have often seen how after a sedentary winter of consuming heavier foods, our bodies may be carrying around as much as five to 10 pounds of toxic wastes. While a properly functioning human body has its own built-in detoxification system, it can be easily overwhelmed by today’s proliferation of environmental toxins. The newest environmental assault on the body’s detox system is electro-pollution, according to research highlighted in the 2007

BioIniative Report, a metastudy of 2,000 peer-reviewed studies compiled by an international group of researchers, scientists and health policy officials. Compounding the problem, Paula BaillieHamilton, a British medical doctor specializing in human metabolism, reported in The Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine that environmental toxins also play havoc with our body’s builtin weight regulation system. In short, the more toxic our body becomes, the harder it is to lose weight.
Detox Equals Weight Loss Clinical research from the University of Quebec as far back as 2002 suggests that toxins slow metabolism. It is widely

held that because many toxins are fatsoluble and stored in body fat, as the fat melts away, the toxins are released into the bloodstream; this inhibits the production of thyroid hormone, with a resulting metabolic meltdown. According to Traditional Chinese Medicine, spring is the season to support the prime organs of detoxification—the liver and gallbladder. The liver alone impacts some 400 bodily functions, so it deserves support. The following symptoms recommend giving these organs some special care: ■ Chronic tension in neck and shoulders ■ Sensitivity beneath the rib cage (particularly the right side) ■ Feeling tired and sleepy after eating ■ Nausea, especially after eating fatty foods ■ Hormonal imbalances with hot flashes due to perimenopause or menopause ■ Premenstrual irritability and bloating ■ Light-colored stools ■ Waking between 1 a.m. and 3 a.m.
Detox Diet Basics Start off each morning for two weeks (or up to a maximum of two months), with hot lemon water, perhaps spiced with cinnamon and ginger, for an added metabolic boost. The antioxidant D-limonine in lemon thins bile and is helpful in breaking down fat-trapping toxins. Use the juice of one small lemon to eight ounces of warm water. Then, sip a total of 64 ounces of
cran-water between meals throughout the day. Mix one ounce of unsweetened cranberry juice per seven ounces of pure water. Cranberry helps to balance pH, suppress hunger and combat cellulite and water retention, while drawing out fatty wastes by targeting lymph (a secondary circulatory system beneath the skin that works to rid the body of toxic wastes, bacteria, heavy metals, dead cells, trapped proteins and fat). Sipped daily, this antioxidant- and phenol-rich elixir works to help reduce bloating and melt fat from hips, waist and thighs. Nutrient-rich spring greens like arugula, collard or dandelion greens, lettuce, parsley, spinach, Swiss chard and watercress are classic foods used in a spring detox. Other good choices are antioxidant foods that supply the body with glutathione, the liver’s premier antioxidant, also known as, “the toxic waste neutralizer,” which is vital to organ detoxification. Broccoli sprouts are one of the best sources of glutathione; so is asparagus. Eating lightly steamed kale, Brussels sprouts, and cabbage can

The common denominator for these disturbances appears to be chronic stress.” Dr. Mark Hyman, chair of the Institute for Functional Medicine, in Lenox, Massachusetts, elaborates: “Functional medicine seeks to create balance in the body by looking at seven keys to achieving wellness: nutrition, hormones, inflammation, digestion, detoxification, energy metabolism and a calm mind. Conventional Medicine Case in Point
Fibromyalgia, for example, encompasses a basket of symptoms, usually beginning with overall body pain with specific pain points. Other common symptoms can include extreme fatigue, facial pain, irritable bowel syndrome, memory loss and brain fog, depression, numbness and tingling, palpitations, insomnia and headaches, including migraines. “Until a few years ago, conventional medicine decided you were crazy if you complained of these symptoms,” advises natural awakenings

Teitelbaum. “Then some expensive medications came out—promoted by $210 million a year in advertising; so now, patients are instead being told to take medications with lots of side effects.” The most common conventionally prescribed drugs for fibromyalgia target symptoms of insomnia, depression, nerve pain and inflammation. According to Teitelbaum, the vast majority of people treating with these medications continue to experience the same symptoms over a five-year period; only 25 to 35 percent report some improvement. It’s difficult to determine how many Americans suffer from fibromyalgia because many go undiagnosed (the average time from onset of symptoms to diagnosis is five years). Cure4Fibromyalgia.com estimates that 5 million Americans, or approximately 2 percent of the population, suffer from this disease.
Functional Medicine Alternative
“Functional medicine practitioners recognize that fibromyalgia represents an energy crisis in the body and use simple, appropriate and effective treatments with no harmful side effects,” says Teitelbaum. “Most often I use a SHINE protocol that I developed, based on 30 years of treating patients with chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia, with a 90 percent success rate.” His is just one example of the way functional medicine would treat a difficult-to-diagnose and to treat disease. Cass uses functional medicine very effectively against depression, addiction and a host of women’s health issues. Hyman specializes in managing diabetes and obesity with the tools of functional medicine. “If other medicines worked as well as treatments used in functional medicine, I’d use them, but they don’t,” concludes Hyman. “My Hippocratic Oath says I must help relieve suffering. I can do that with the tools that functional medicine gives me.”

“F
unctional Medicine is a common sense approach to the diagnosis and treatment of chronic sickness,” states Tom Wachtmann, DC, of Twin Ponds Integrative Health Center in Breinigsville. “It is the ultimate bridge between science and medicine because we are fixing problems rather than just suppressing symptoms.” The essentials of treatment Wachtmann strives for are to identify the underlying biochemical and physiological glitches to achieving optimal health, respecting each patient’s biochemical individuality and helping each patient restore their proper physiological function. Above all, he endeavors to cause no harm with treatments that have negative side effects. “It is patient-centered, smart, bull’s eye healthcare, not cookie cutter sickness care which involves obsolete thinking,” continues Wachtmann. “I view my role in Functional Medicine as being a medical detective; discovering where patients’ symptoms are coming from, identifying what dysfunctions are allowing a particular condition to persist, and discovering the major point of leverage within a patient that needs to be treated for maximum benefit at minimal cost.” Some of the disorders Wachtmann addresses with Functional Medicine include oxidative stress; nutritional, digestive and intestinal imbalances; impaired detoxification; hormonal and endocrine imbalances; immune dysfunction; and inflammatory imbalances. “My patients enjoy optimal aging, reduced costs over other forms of treatment, early detection of disease and dysfunction, reduced pain and suffering, and greater enjoyment throughout life,” enthuses Wachtmann. very day in my practice I see patients who have been ‘everywhere’ and tried ‘everything’ to treat their chronic condition,” reports Bethlehem chiropractor, Ray Benndetto. Whether it’s fibromyalgia, a thyroid condition, peripheral neuropathy or a chronic spinal condition, patients are routinely not getting relief from traditional treatments.” Benedetto reports similar stories from most of his patients. They saw their doctor with symptoms such as weight gain, widespread pain, crippling fatigue, burning and numbness in their feet, migraines or debilitating low back pain. They were given a prescription, sent to therapy, told to exercise and lose weight, and sent on their way. In the meantime, many ended up feeling worse and unable to enjoy the things they used to. “In a functional medicine model we dig deep,” continues Benedetto. “By running tests that most doctors don’t run and performing exams that most doctors don’t perform, we can find the root cause of the problem. When we find the cause or causes, we roll up our sleeves and get to work managing it. With lifestyle changes, appropriate nutritional supplements, and proper neurological care clients get relief. The fixes are not quick or as easy as a five minute visit, but they work. Patients participate in a dedicated effort to find out what’s wrong and get their lives back.” To connect with Dr. Benedetto, call 610-974-9911 or visit www.BethlehemBBT.com

Wash & Wear
How to Green Everyone’s Wardrobe Every fall, even with back-to-school sales, buying clothes can be costly for families. Also, new togs take a toll on the planet: Most common synthetic fabrics are petroleum-based; and according to the Sustainable Cotton Project (Sustainable Cotton.org), 25 percent of all insecticides applied in this country, including known carcinogens, are used to grow cotton. Perceived as a disposable commodity, garments purchased for growing children are typically discarded after serving only a fraction of their useful life, while teens dismiss outfits when fashions change. Adults often have closets full of items from when they weighed less. Here are 10 commonsense ways to redress the problem and lighten the family’s ecological footprint. Wash only as needed. Avoid wasting energy and water by washing clothing only when it’s dirty, rather than after a single gentle wearing; then drip- or linedry. Go unisex for tots. Siblings can wear family hand-me-downs and share basic items like shirts and pants.

Share. Family members, friends and neighbors can swap perfectly wearable fashions when they tire of them. Help strangers. Charitable nonprofits, detailed on websites like DressFor Success.org (women’s business attire) OneWorldRunning.com (athletic gear sent to developing countries) and SalvationArmyUSA.org (caring for the homeless), all have on-the-ground networks in place to redistribute goods. Give it back. Some brands take back and recycle their products. Nike (NikeReuseAShoe.com), for instance, repurposes any brand of worn-out athletic shoes in the making of new sports facilities. Shop where you drop. When dropping off donated clothing and other items at a thrift or resale store, walk inside and see what’s for sale. Read labels before purchasing. Some clothes require more maintenance that isn’t eco-friendly, such as special detergents, ironing or even dry cleaning, which typically uses toxic perchloroethylene (PERC)—unless it’s a green cleaning process. Look for alternatives. Clothing made from organic, low-impact or recycled materials such as organic cotton, hemp, bamboo and recycled fibers, is available in stores and online. Dress casually. Dress suits for men and women require dry cleaning, so whenever possible, leave such fine attire in the closet. Buy the good stuff. Brand names often live up to their advertising. Prestigious trademarks often get that way by producing better-made, more durable clothing and also protecting their image by avoiding exploitive practices.
