ne of the great rewards of publishing Natural Awakenings is the privilege of being in the front row to witness the transformation when small business owners realize their vision and rejoice in the success of their business. Three years ago, when I first met with some of the yoga studio owners in town, among us, we barely had two nickels to rub together. Many were operating on pure determination and faith as they signed contracts for leased spaces and opened their doors. All fully stood behind their commitment to helping others find health through yoga. More, they wished to use the practice of this mind-body-spirit discipline to build a focal point for cultivating a fresh sense of community among Lehigh Valley residents. Today, in assembling our 2010 yoga teacher guide and glossary (page 42), I am heartened by the sheer number of positive reports testifying to the rising popularity of yoga in our area. I have to believe that students’ inspirational success stories likely exceed even these dedicated teachers’ wildest expectations. With similarly high hopes and my own desire to promote that which makes life better, this month’s issue dives into the celebrated benefits of Creative Expression, complete with the launch of a new Creative Expressions monthly calendar (page 35). Again, the goal is to support readers’ health and happiness, this time by providing a place where local art and creativity teachers can build their businesses in ways that reach out to bless us all. Writer Beth Davis profiles some local organizations devoted to supporting local artists on page 30. Whether or not we think we have individual creative flair, these groups can foster the emergence of our inner artist. We can’t wait to hear of your success story! This is an exciting time to be participating in the natural health community. People are making daily progress and getting results by embracing a holistic approach to their lives. We are awakening to the possibilities offered in combining the best of ancient wisdom and contemporary research. We are learning that, in nearly every case, there is a better way than what Americans have been conditioned to accept. By taking ownership of all facets of our lives in deep and meaningful ways, we have become part of a movement now growing at an impressive rate across this great country of ours.
Health, happiness and harmony always,
Reid Boyer, Publisher

Kick-Off Fall Gardening Season
G
oodness Grows Gardens, a unique garden design company located in Warren County, N.J., is offering complimentary garden consultations to kick off the Fall gardening season. Owner and garden designer Heidi Walls says Fall is the ideal season to start a project in the garden. “As cool fall weather approaches, plants begin a period of rapid root growth to prepare for winter’s harsh conditions,” Walls explains. She adds that Autumn’s cooler temperatures and more frequent rainfall mean less work for the gardener and a less stressful transition for immature plants. Trees, shrubs and perennial plants that are planted in the fall will be well established in the garden and will thrive through the following summer with the use of less water. Founded in 1999, Goodness Grows Gardens specializes in the design, planting and maintenance of gardens. Walls’ green gardening practices ensure “our garden, our planet and our future remain beautiful and healthy.” For information, call 908-246-8996 or visit GoodnessGrowsGardens.com.

Two-Year Herbalist Training Program Offered
D
avid Winston’s Center for Herbal Studies is offering a new, two-year clinical herbalist’s training program for Herbal Studies. The class begins September 21 and is available online via live webcast or at the Center in Washington, N.J. The class will not begin again until 2012. This program has been training clinical herbalists since 1981 and has hundreds of graduates who are excellent practitioners and educators throughout the U.S., Canada and the U.K. According to Eileen Frost of David
Winston’s Center, the program is the only one that teaches over 300 herbs as well as Cherokee, Chinese, and Western systems of medicine. Founder David Winston, RH (AHG), is an internationally known clinical herbalist, educator and ethno botanist. The goal of the center is to give students the foundation they need to become good herbalists. The Center teaches multiple approaches to understanding the uses and energetics of herbs and how to accurately and safely apply them to individuals. “The use of herbs, diet, supplements, and lifestyle changes can help prevent disease and enable almost anyone to live a healthier life,” says Winston. “Our focus is to teach how to treat the person rather than the disease.” To schedule an interview, fill out an application online at HerbalStudies. net/apply.php or contact DWHerbal. Stone Soup Listening Tour to Connect the Green Dots
B
eginning September 7, Linda Sechrist, Naples Natural Awakenings Managing Editor, writer, and co-founder of Upstate Green Central Station, and Sharon J. Kleitsch, founder of The Connection Partners, will meet hundreds of “Cultural Creatives and innovative individuals involved in many of the two million organizations already working to create sustainable communities intended to ensure a future for all. Adding sustenance to make a healthy and savory “stone soup, the duo will collect stories from each community as they travel to 11 cities in their Stone Soup Listening Tour and contribute them to the next “pot. A much anticipated result: the truly savory and soulfully good soup story that sustains all. “At present, we believe that sustainable stories are disconnected and ineffectively unable to transform, modify or enhance the momentum of the grassroots movement already taking place, say Sechrist and Kleitsch. Through their networks the women are connecting with regional nonprofit, business, government and media leaders to support what they and others are doing in the tour cities. “This creates a satisfying Stone Soup of true sustenance, says Sechrist. “Many are already hosting conversations to address current issues. We’re just connecting the green dots, stirring the Stone Soup pot and will watch what happens, adds Kleitsch. The tour, in collaboration with 11 of the Natural Awakenings publishers, begins in San Diego on September 7 and ends in Greenville/Spartanburg September 24. Stories, photos and video interviews will be posted on blog.naturalawakeningsmag.com, UpstateGreenCentralStation.com, YouGottaGoGreen.com, CircleConnections.com, You Tube, and Creative Loafing http://tampa.creativeloafing.com/gyrobase/green as well as Facebook. newsbriefs New Fundraising Option for Non Profits
W
ith donations down, many nonprofits organizations are seeking ways to raise funds. Curtis Shafer of Allentown is offering non-profits a new way to raise funds through electricity deregulation. By promoting electric purchased from AMA Nation and Public Power to their supporters, organizations can receive a donation every time someone switches. The supporter can also receive discounts on products and services as a customer appreciation benefit for making the switch. Deregulation of electricity means the “Generation portion of Pennsylvania residents’ electric bill is open to competition, allowing everyone to choose who supplies their energy. There are no changes to supply wiring or meters required to change electricity providers and the current provider will still bill the customer. Switching to AMA Nation and Public Power electricity is easy and free, requires no deposit, has no cancellation fees and has the same reliability as current local utilities. “I signed on with AMA Nation and Public Power because I wanted to offer a valuable service for my customers, says Curtis Shafer, president of Curtis Total Service in Allentown. “What I like about this program is I am helping residential and small commercial customers save on their electric bill as soon as they switch. The four local Chamber of Commerce organizations and National Kidney Foundation have already begun promoting Public Power to their members. The customer appreciation program allows them and their supporters save thousands on purchases they will make anyway. I’m pleased to help promote local business with this program. To find out more about this program contact Curtis Shafer at 610-770-9045 or visit www.CurtisEnergy.ichoosesavings. com.

versity’s Nutrition and Wellness Research Center may give men a way to combat high cholesterol without drugs—if they don’t mind sprinkling some flaxseed into their daily diet. In the study, researchers examined the effects of eating flaxseed lignans (natural plant chemicals found in flaxseed) on 90 people diagnosed with high cholesterol. The results showed that consuming at least 150 milligrams per day (about three tablespoons) decreased cholesterol in men by just under 10 percent over the three months of the study. They did not see similar results in women. Suzanne Hendrich, a professor of food science and human nutrition at the university who led the study, notes that the flaxseed tablets used in the research are not available in the United States, but sprinkling ground flaxseed on cereal and other foods can provide ample cholesterol-lowering flaxseed lignans. Ground flaxseed will oxidize over time, she says, possibly affecting its flavor as well as omega-3 content, so keep it fresh.

The researchers used a program called the Lebed Method, based on a combination of low-impact dance steps, choreographed to music. In the latest of a series of studies, volunteers at an independent-living community participated in 18 dance sessions over a two-month period. The seniors had so much fun that they continued dancing after the study concluded.

Keratin Treatment Heals Hair
K
eratin is the key structural component of human hair. Tough and insoluble Keratin structures make up each individual strand of hair. Damage to the Keratin structure can leave hair frizzy or with unwanted curls. A new Keratin treatment technique is now being used at cutting edge salons that heals damaged hair by infusing natural Keratine protien into damaged or porous strands. For those wanting to straiten naturally occuring curly hair, the treatment eliminates the need for high-teperature flat ironing and leaves hair soft, smooth and straight. It is safe for all types of hair, makes styling easier and is easy to maintain at home. Products are safe for colored hair, contains no harmful toxins or chemicals. To find out more about Keratin Treatments contact Anthony Ashley Salon in Allentown at 610-434-0180 or the Belvidere Day Spa in Belvidere, NJ at 908-475-0094
Grapes as Medicine A diet rich in natural grapes—red, green and black—could slow a downhill progression from high blood pressure and insulin resistance to heart disease and Type 2 diabetes. Scientists at the University of Michigan Health System believe that grapes’ naturally occurring antioxidants, known as phytochemicals, help reduce risk factors related to cardiovascular disease and metabolic syndrome, often a Type 2 diabetes precursor.

The Human Heart Renews Itself Researchers at Karolinska Institute, a leading medical university in Sweden, have demonstrated that contrary to conventional theory, heart cells are able to regenerate themselves. Examining the heart tissue of 50 people over the course of four years, the researchers found that new heart cells appeared to replace older ones at a rate of approximately 1 percent per year in people in their 20s, falling to 0.5 percent per year by age 75. Scientists now hope to find ways to stimulate this natural regeneration of heart cells as a way to avoid heart transplants and help people recover from heart attacks.

Clapping Hands Sharpens the Brain
A
new study by Ben-Gurion University of the Negev reveals that hand-clapping songs boost the development of motor and cognitive skills in children ages 6 through 10. “We found that children in the first, second and third grades who sing these [kinds of] songs demonstrate skills absent in children who don’t take part in similar activities, explains Dr. Idit Sulkin, of the university’s music science lab. “We also found that children who spontaneously perform hand-clapping songs in the yard during recess have neater handwriting, write better and make fewer spelling errors. Sulkin engaged several elementary school classrooms in a program of either music appreciation or hand-clapping songs for 10 weeks. With the hand-clapping group, she found that “Within a very short period of time, the children who until then hadn’t taken part in such activities caught up in their cognitive abilities to those who did. The children’s teachers believe that those who participate in such hand-clapping songs also exhibit better social integration.

Organic Hair Care Not Always Organic
Y
ou might expect a product labeled “pure, natural and organic to be just that but Greenwashing experts have seen otherwise. Unlike the food industry, there are no legal standards for organic or natural personal care products sold in the United States. This means that companies can, and often do, use these terms as marketing gimmicks. For those with chemical sensitivity or wanting to lower their environmental impact, the differences can be significant. Do your homework first by researching the products your salon uses. Also consider whether or not you would prefer a salon that solely uses green products. For those with sensitivities or allergies, researching products is incredibly important. Products containing ammonia or bleach are not entirely green and some may find the smells of non-organic products to be unsettling. Although products are labeled certified organic, they may still have low-levels of ammonia. Ask your stylist if their products are completely organic. When doing research on salons, look for the following key words to decipher labels; certified organic and no ammonia, parabens, sodium lauryl sulfates, thioglycolates or formaldehyde. A little research will lead to peace of mind while getting that great cut and color. Sound Play
Birds, Like Humans, Sing Just Because They Can Animal researchers like Gisela Kaplan, Ph.D., and Irene Pepperberg, Ph.D., have determined that birds not only sing to communicate daily needs, many engage in sound play, most often when they’re alone, but sometimes also when humans are present. Some species continually improvise their singing with new elements, phrases and sequences, reports Kaplan, a professor at the Research Centre for Neuroscience and Animal Behaviour at the University of New England, Australia. Nightingales and canaries are among the avian virtuosos, reinventing their repertoire in each successive season, while the brown thrasher may hold the record at close to 2,000 song types. Nightingales, she notes, organize their compositions according to rules of construction similar to the way humans use syntax. These birds even create distinctive phrases that identify them as individuals. Kaplan’s own recordings of Australian magpies reveal how the bird’s voice moves across four octaves, varies its phrasing between staccato and legato, and embellishes sequences with vibrato, trills or deep overtones. More, it will close a completed song with a signature phrase, in much the same way that a painter initials a finished canvas.

Classical Forms Meet Latin Rhythms in Concert Halls Latin rhythms and melodies have been spicing up popular music for years. Now, the infectious influences from every corner of Central and South America are turning up in concert halls, performed by symphony orchestras across the United States. This season’s arrival of Venezuela’s superstar conductor Gustavo Dudamel as music director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic has ignited a love affair with tonalities from south of the U.S. border. “Arts organizations that recognize and incorporate Hispanic culture are both at the cutting edge and ensuring their own future,” remarks Carol Reynolds, music history professor at Southern Methodist University, in Dallas. “The incorporation of Latin-based music into the classical world is long overdue.” Source: The Christian Science Monitor

In defending this exemplary spot of award-winning silence, Hempton is effectively “Silence is acoustic ecologist. “When protecting the soundscape of you are quiet, the silence the think tank about 1,000 square miles of blows against your mind and of the soul.” surrounding land. etches away everything soft Hempton defines and unimportant. What is left ~ Gordon Hempton silence not as noiselessness, is what is real: pure awarebut “the complete absence ness and the very hardest questions.” of all audible mechanical vibrations, It’s not easy to find silence, which is leaving only the sounds of nature at her facing extinction in the modern world. If most natural. Silence is the presence of a quiet place is one where you can listen everything, undisturbed.” for 15 minutes in daylight hours without Silence, he would concur, is not hearing a human-created sound, there the absence of sound, but a way of are no quiet places left in Europe. There living—an intention to make of one’s are none east of the Mississippi River and own ears, one’s own body, a sounding perhaps 12 in the American West, inboard that resonates with the vibracluding one square inch in the Hoh Rain tions of the world. Silence creates an Forest at Olympic National Park, now opening, an absence of self, which officially recognized as the quietest place allows the larger world to enter into
our awareness. It brings us into contact with what is beyond us, its beauty and mystery. Hempton encourages us all to join in the self-discovery of nature. He’s found, “All we have to do is listen.” Sounds, more than sight, connect us, he observes. In learning to listen to nature’s nuances, we also learn how to listen to one another. His favorite time of day for listening to nature is 30 minutes before sunrise. When the atmosphere is still, “It is not unusual to hear many square miles at once.” Astonishment and gratitude illuminate our being when light breezes play across leaves and set them in motion, chirruping night insects wind down and the birds’ dawn chorus begins. When our moving a stone in a creek bed alters the water music, it is we who are moved. No one knows why natural sounds speak so directly to the human spirit, but we all acknowledge, in silent thanksgiving, that they do. Gordon Hempton, of Port Angeles, WA, is an acoustic ecologist whose award-winning recordings of America’s vanishing natural soundscapes support his campaign to protect the silence of our national parks (SoundTracker. com). Over the past 25 years, he has circled the globe three times in pursuit of environmental sound portraits. Living Art
creativity inspires community by Kirsten Broadfoot
“All creative people want to do the unexpected.” ~ Hedy Lamarr
When we say someone or something is creative, do we mean imaginative, innovative, inventive, artistic or fantastic? Creativity is about being inquisitive and open to new ideas as well as new ways of putting those ideas together. Individual artists, who are naturally inventive, are central to sustaining the creative spirit for society as a whole. However, a larger creativity comes alive through collective art making, where the creative impulse requires interaction between the artists and audience. Such animating experiences, which often take flight from the creation of familiar objects, bring people together in body, mind and spirit, and work to keep us connected.
Yielding to the Moment of Creation
Take, for example, the fourth plinth (think pedestal) raised in 2009 in London’s Trafalgar Square by Antony Gormley. This piece of public performance art, entitled One and Other, encouraged anyone interested to ascend and stay atop the empty plinth for an hour to get a different view of the world. For 100 days, contributing individuals could do whatever they liked for the assigned hour, but the most
Communal creativity exists along a continuum between spontaneity and structure, and gives birth to myriad forms that are sometimes stunning in their simplicity. The most poignant of these remind us of just how very human we are. 26 Lehigh Valley www.healthylehighvalley.com

“Art washes from the soul the dust of everyday life.” ~ Pablo Picasso
astounding revelation for all was the ways in which life came to life before their eyes (OneAnd Other.co.uk). Consider the inspired vision that prompted residents of Fort Collins, Colorado, to devise a traveling pop-up art gallery that transforms empty downtown storefronts into vibrant art spaces until tenants are found. Since 2009, The Art Lab has filled Old Town with art, innovation, music and smiling faces. Anyone can come and create in the space, display their arts and crafts or just sit, talk, brainstorm and share the good energy. This laid back, yet intimate, contribution to community life ranges from plays and exhibitions to communal paintings (ArtLabFortCollins.org). Tom Borrup, a creative community builder in Minneapolis, sees such everyday cultural expressions as crucial reservoirs of community spirit (CommunityAndCulture.com). He notes that festivals, recurring gatherings in parks, gardens or community centers and artistic activities of all stripes that generate and sustain group traditions build community and contribute to everyone’s quality of life.
“Art has been the means of keeping alive the senses of purpose…” ~ John Dewey Artful togetherness is woven into the very fabric of community life through what often appears to be everyday utilitarian activities, such as group gardening, sewing, building, painting and cooking. In sharing time and space, we gain a sense of nurturing and realize ways to hold onto the distinction of a place. In the best scenarios, we honor cherished traditions and remain open to learning and reinvention by accepting and incorporating new ideas from unlikely places. … Putting our hands to work Visitors are likely to be surprised by the hive of activity they encounter in local sewing and knitting supply shops lately. Take the Yarn Shop and Fiber Place, in Bozeman, Montana, for example (BozemanYarnShop.com). The owners host monthly knit-alongs, spinning and weaving circles and knit-for-a-cause events. In New Jersey, a community of volunteers with the Blankie Depot has crafted some 147,000 blankets and other comforting goods for needful youngsters since 1999 (BlankieDepo.org). The Sewful Austin group in Texas, on the other hand, just gets people together to have fun and share ideas for sewing projects (Meetup.com/Sewful-Austin). Coffee shops, too, can get in on the act. Dogleg Coffeehouse, in Bandera, Texas, (DoglegCoffeehouse.com) is the site of a free monthly art class led by local artists. They’ve sparked a growing community of folks creating new life for repurposed and re-found items. Spontaneous expression is commonly found in open studios or houses, as groups of artists and others meet to paint, draw, sculpt or mold. Community art collectives like Rock Paper Scissors, in Oakland, California, are hot spots for activities ranging from art walks and talks to writer readings. A volunteer-run organization, RPS fosters all forms of community arts, crafts and performances through collaborative
sharing of ideas, skills and resources aimed to strengthen a sense of community (rpsCollective.org). Other artists, like Susan Wood, of SusieQ Art based in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, move outside the studio to facilitate the co-creation of art in public spaces (SusieQArt.com). Her favorite sites include parks, science museums and natural health expos. Anyone within earshot can get a no-cost creative charge by simply picking up a paintbrush to “add a dab.” To date, the largest ad hoc painting party was 115 people strong, all venturing beyond self-imposed boundaries. … Unleashing indwelling voices Beyond the creative command of our hands, it also feels good to unleash our bodies and expand the scope of our voices. The modern-day resurrection of drum circles, for instance, is giving new life to dance socials. Based upon one of humanity’s most ancient forms of gathering and sharing within and across communities, loosely structured drumming events around the world leave plenty of room for spontaneous jamming. Fans view the drum as an especially powerful instrument relating to the human body, as it mimicks the beat of the human heart. Waleska Sallaberry relates that their Natural Awakenings’ Drumming Circle in Puerto Rico tops
600 participants a month. (Find existing drum circles by state or find out how to start one at DrumCircles.net/ circlelist.html.) Another ancient and global form of community building resides in the power of words—whether sung or spoken. We have come to understand that stories sustain our values, myths and belief systems. The National Storytelling Network helps locate master storytellers in the community (StoryNet.org). We can also create a storytelling event of our own. Ask any informal gathering of new and old friends to each create their own six-word memoir in a round robin event and be amazed at what memories are instantly created. Enjoy checking out and sharing such six-word autobiographies at Smith Magazine (SmithMag.net). Finally, there are celebratory events at which all kinds of vibrant creative forms come together in one place. In Naples, Florida, Live Art meets in various places around town for onthe-spot performance music, painting, fire-spinning, poetry, dance and body painting. It’s a constantly evolving work in progress, sometimes scheduled and sometimes spontaneous, but always full

At the other end of the spectrum, Flash Mobs entail large groups of volunteers who appear to spontaneously perform a clever act of theater in a public space for a brief period of time. Initially designed as a combined social experiment and form of performance art, the first flash mob occurred at Macy’s in New York City in 2003, organized by Bill Wasik, of Harper’s Magazine. all over the country; some more structured than others, but always evoking the feeling that they are happening on the spur of the moment. Whether dramatic or musically inclined, they’re always designed to make us become truly present in our environment; their brilliance is the connection they spark between the actions of the mob and the place we inhabit as an audience. (See YouTube.com, search Frozen Grand Central Station.) Public participation is the name of the global game with International Pillowfight Day, as communities come together with pillows to play. Part of the Urban Playground Movement, the idea is to reclaim public space for play, away from advertising and consumerism (PillowFightDay.com). Taking a cue from “A Day in the Life” photography projects, World Pinhole Photography Day (PinHoleDay.org) recruits everyday people to create a pinhole camera and take a picture of something in their local community. It happens on the same day, usually the last Sunday in April. Everyone then loads their images onto the collective website to beget a global gallery of images. Finally, the Global Mala Project demonstrates what can be accomplished with a worldwide, intercommunity, consciousness-raising event (GlobalMala.org). Here, yoga studios from many nations gather local individuals to form a “mala around the Earth,” as they perform ritual practices based on the sacred cycle of 108, to raise funds and awareness for pressing global issues. This year, the mala will be held September 18-19. Tune in for an “Om” heard ‘round the world. Building a Community of Creativity by Beth Davis

incent van Gogh once said, “If you hear a voice within you say, ‘You cannot paint,’ then by all means paint, and that voice will be silenced.” This is especially true in the world today, when many question the validity of following their dreams. Perhaps the worst enemy to creativity is self-doubt. Every individual is creative in some way. Expressing that creativity, however, is not always easy. Maybe it’s time, maybe it’s not having the patience, or maybe it’s simply not having the support and guidance needed to pursue that creative vision.

For the residents of the Lehigh Valley, that support is at their fingertips with numerous organizations dedicated to providing resources and support for local artists. Whether it’s a gathering of like-minded individuals, displaying an artist’s work, or just providing the tools necessary to achieve their goals, these groups offer both artists and the community invaluable opportunities. The New Arts Program (NAP) is a non-profit art resource organization dedicated to providing a forum for the public to interact with today’s most provocative, unique and insightful artists. The NAP conducts two-day residencies with one-to-one dialogues, maintains the William Zimmer Reference Library, produces television programs, publishes a journal, artist book forms and is an excellent resource for art information. The NAP holds a monthly gathering of working visual and performing artists, musicians, poets and writers. Artists can share their progress, discuss materials, pool resources, invite special guests, collaborate, form workshop or even start a movement. For artists interested in producing limited editions of their work, the New Arts Program recently acquired an Epson Stylus Pro 9600 Printer, which can print large archival images. New Arts Program Exhibition Space is located at 173 West Main Street, Kutztown. For more information, call 610683-6440 or visit NAPConnection.com. Parkland Art League (PAL) was formed in 1963 by eight individuals interested in encouraging friendship among persons interested in art. In 1984, it received its non-profit status. Today, PAL strives to awaken and sustain interest in art, to exhibit the art of its members and to offer an opportunity to the public to purchase original art. The Art League welcomes anyone residing in the Greater Lehigh Valley and beyond that is interested in the group’s objectives to join. The PAL showcases their artists with two-three membership shows a year at venues such as the Allentown Art Museum, Jewish Community Center and Whitehall Library. Members work is also displayed at several local businesses and community locations including Kalmbach Memorial Park, St. Lukes Hospital and The Mitchell Center. Meetings are held at 7 p.m. the second Tuesday of the month (with the exception of July, August and December) at the Lehigh County Senior Center and are followed by demonstration or presentations by a person or persons affiliated with art. For information about the Parkland Art League, contact Jane Fanok at 610-966-5415 or visit Sites.Google.com/Site/ ParklandArtLeague.

Creativity and Community:
Getting Started
“Imagination will often carry us to worlds that never were. But without it, we go nowhere.” ~ Carl Sagan Why people engage in creative opportunities in their communities is a question that has long been debated. In 1998, the Urban Land Institute conducted a study to uncover the answer. According to participants, people’s primary motivations include:
1. to celebrate heritage
The new kid on the block is the Nazareth Center for the Arts, a non-profit organization dedicated to providing a variety of arts and cultural events for area residents. Opened in January, the Center provides residents with low cost family entertainment while allowing performers and artists a venue to showcase their talent. The goal of the Center is to educate, inspire and celebrate the arts, and thus far it has managed to achieve its goal in a short period of time, with multiple performances and events to engage and inspire the community. Managed by the Cultural and Arts Commission, LTD, the Center offers a featured gallery artist each month, weekly musical performances, art lessons and community events and activities. The Center is now gearing up for the fall with a new Saturday showcase series featuring local and regional artists from all musical genres — folk rock, blues, country, ‘60s music and more. The series begins September 11 and runs 12 weeks. The Nazareth Arts Center is located at 30 Belvidere Street, Nazareth. For information, visit NazarethArts.com.
2. to support community events or organizations 3. to learn something about another time or culture 4. to learn more about a particu lar form of art or cultural expression 5. to experience the high quality of an art 6. to support a family member or friend
The Lehigh Art Alliance (LAA) has been celebrating the visual arts for the past 75 years and continues to be a proponent of the creative arts throughout the Greater Lehigh Valley area. LAA is an organization for amateur and professional artists and serves as a cultural and educational entity for the community. Founded in 1935 by Professor Garth Howland of Lehigh University, the LAA hosts juried exhibitions that give the artists an opportunity to display their works, and the appreciators of art an opportunity to view what regional artists are producing. Various Lehigh Valley institutions have graciously contributed the use of their exhibition space to the LAA. Among these are the Allentown Art Museum, The Banana Factory, Cedar Crest College, Lehigh University, Muhlenberg College and The State Theatre. In addition to exhibitions, the LAA sponsors general meetings that are open to the public and feature guest speakers on various art-related matters. In recent years, the LAA’s primary focus has been its annual Spring and Fall juried exhibitions, and occasional Group Award shows of selected artists by area galleries. To contact the Lehigh Art Alliance, call Milan (Skip) Kralik at 215-6796658 or visit LehighArtAlliance.org.

Founded in 1947, the purpose of the Bethlehem Palette Club (BPC) is to stimulate the creativity of its membership by providing opportunities to learn, exhibit art and network with other artists. The club helps create interest in art within the community through outreach and exhibitions and acquainting the public with the work of the members of the Bethlehem Palette Club. Membership consists of artists and those interested in the arts. The BPC provides year round opportunities for members to create and learn, and sponsors art exhibits for its members each year. For members who want expert instruction, the club organizes several workshops each year that are taught by prominent artists. During the summer, “paint-outs are scheduled on Wednesdays at various locations where members can enjoy painting outdoors. During wintertime “paint-ins occur each Wednesday morning at College Moravian Church. Here, a live model poses for portrait drawings or paintings. Bus trips are also part of the Club’s activity, including a popular one-day trip to New York City that allows members to visit the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the American Watercolor Society show. Plenty of opportunities exist for members not only to create and network with other artists, but also to be involved with various interesting Club activities. For information about the Bethlehem Palette Club, call 610-861-4652 or visit BethlehemPaletteClub.org.

The Indian River Arts Guild serves and advances the arts while engaging the community in charitable acts. They accomplish this by holding events for emerging and professional artists while raising funds by raffles, food sales, commissions and donations for good causes. As they have no membership dues or meetings, the Guild relies on the funds raised for each art show or event. For these art shows they negotiate for and supply space to display artists’ work and art racks. If there is a local event, fair or festival event, a tent, banner and additional signage is supplied. The Guild provides all marketing and publicity as well as postage for mailers, insurance, vendor’s license and any other licenses that may be necessary. The artists are simply asked to sit the art, make their own labels and help with the set up and break down of each show. According to Sandi Crum with the Arts Guild, their best client is the emerging and professional working artists who have little time and less capital to showcase their own work. Since its inception in 2008, the Guild continues to reach its goals by donating these funds to help support good causes such as Soldiers Angels, animal shelters, women shelters, food banks, missionaries, children hospitals, disaster victims and more. For information about the Indian River Arts Guild, contact Sandi Crum at 570-386-3433 or visit SpiritCreatesIndianRiverArtGuild.com. The Arts Community of Easton (ACE) is all about encouraging and promoting arts of all disciplines, fostering an appreciation of the arts, and enriching the quality of life of the Easton area. Recognizing that a thriving community of artists is essential to accomplishing these goals, ACE fosters artists through education and professional development. ACE sponsors and promotes artistic events throughout the year, including member exhibitions, a citywide Arts Tour in the spring, and the Riverside Festival of the Arts in September. In addition, ACE is a curator in the State Theatre’s Butz Gallery. ACE works closely with Lafayette College, the City of Easton, and the Easton Main Street Initiative to help create a truly arts-oriented community in Easton. For information about the Arts Community of Easton, visit eastonart.org. Overall, the Greater Lehigh Valley is a wonderful place for emerging artists to end their self-doubt, believe in themselves, and create their vision – all backed by a community of supporters.

s one person’s trash really another’s treasure? According to a Durham, North Carolina-based arts and crafts store, it is. The Scrap Exchange lets people explore their creativity while helping out the environment. The exchange was founded in 1991 as a sustainable art supply store that takes unwanted materials from businesses and community members and resells them as arts and crafts supplies. Materials sell for 50 to 70 percent off their retail prices, and popular items include paper, fabric, office supplies, marble scraps and CD cases. The idea is to promote environmental awareness and creative expression by providing high-quality, low-cost materials for artists. The Scrap Exchange also provides an in-house art gallery to show off the work of local artists who turn recycled materials into crafts such as handmade bags, metal sculptures and jewelry. Classes in artistic skills like quilting and collage also are available. Plus, the store offers children’s birthday parties that give kids a chance to invent fun projects with their friends while teaching them about taking care of the planet. The Resource Center in Chicago is another nonprofit organization that is encouraging creative repurposing of materials. Its Creative Reuse Warehouse (CRW) finds and recovers rejected items and byproducts that local businesses treat as waste. They donate these materials to Chicago area schools, service organizations, performance companies and individual artists. It’s a

win-win situation for the CRW’s donors and recipients—donors get a tax deduction and recipients obtain materials to teach classes and create artwork that they may not have been able to afford otherwise. Similar programs are available throughout the country. The Scroungers’ Center for Reusable Art Parts has graced San Francisco since the 1970s; participants learn about different crafts and art techniques in its unique workshops. Creative Reuse Pittsburgh, a relative newcomer, collects reusable discards from businesses and other organizations in its region, offers hands-on creative arts programs and hosts booths at local arts festivals. Add up the mental, emotional, social and environmental benefits of artful hours used to turn trash into treasure and the lure of time well-spent at a creative reuse center is nearly irresistible. Every year astounding advancements take place in science, technology, medicine, and the understanding of the natural world. Humanity as a whole is evolving by leaps and bounds, which is obvious when we look at the shifts in consciousness that have occurred in the last 20 years. From near death experiences and the after-life, to angels, miracles, and synchronicity, it is evident that more and more people today want to relate to the aspect of the universe that goes beyond the physical realm. All of this suggests that we are in the midst of an encouraging new shift on the planet, one that allows us to tap into incredible new frequencies of healing and evolution. Focusing on experiments that quantify the effects of energy, light and information on human beings, world-renowned scientists William Tiller, Ph.D., and Gary Schwartz, Ph.D., are studying “the Reconnective Healing frequencies” first discovered by Eric Pearl, a doctor of chiropractic. Tiller, professor emeritus at Stanford University, author of books and scientific papers and a lead character in the film, What the Bleep!?, has been conducting research on how the physical properties of a room change as a result of energy healing frequencies that enter it. Additional research by Schwartz and his colleagues at the Laboratory for Advances in Consciousness and Health at the University of Arizona has focused on

monitoring attendees of two Reconnective Healing seminars hosted by members of the Reconnective Association. The researchers determined that the more than 90 people who participated in their study all walked out of the session with expanded and new electromagnetic abilities, even if they had never studied any of the various energy healing techniques known today. Pearl explains that the frequencies allow us to heal on higher levels than we have ever before experienced. He instructs that healing is not only about the alleviation of symptoms, but rather, it is the bringing of balance to someone on all levels. In essence, true healing. What’s more, Pearl suggests that everyone on the planet might be “hard coded” to receive these frequencies and be able to work with them to help facilitate healings for others and themselves. But you do have to come into contact with them first. These incredibly strong, palpable and intelligent frequencies are the topic of Pearl’s international best seller, The Reconnection: Heal Others, Heal Yourself, now published in over 36 languages. According to Pearl, Reconnective Healing is both old and new. It’s old because it’s of the Universe and has therefore always existed, yet simultaneously it’s new because it hasn’t been here on the planet before! To date, Pearl and The Reconnection teaching team have taught this new level of healing to more than 60,000 people in more than 60 countries. While several thousand of those trained worldwide are medical doctors, nurses, chiropractors and/or master healers, most come from non-healthcare related backgrounds and include engineers, teachers, housewives, high school students, sales personnel, attorneys, government officials, celebrities and even royalty. Working with these frequencies is often a life changing experience. During a seminar weekend, participants are “immersed” in the frequencies, and often continue to experience the healing vibrations well after the seminar has finished. An informational program entitled Explore the New Frequencies of Healing will be presented by Kelly Woodruff on Thursday, September 23 at 7pm at the Pebble Hill Church, 320 Edison Furlong Road, Doylestown. Call 215-348-3428 to reserve. A series of training seminars and workshops teaching Reconnective Healing will be held in Philadelphia from Saturday, September 25 through Tuesday, September 28. For more information about Eric Pearl or to register for the Reconnective Healing workshops, visit www.TheReconnection.com, or call 323-960-0012.

TITANS OF YOGA
LESSONS DISTILLED FROM A LIFETIME OF DISCIPLINED PRACTICE by Johannes R. Fisslinger
enlightenment from
close your eyes and watch your breath. Take 30 seconds to enjoy this moment, right now, being present… and connecting with your inner smile. ~ Lilias Folan, called the “First Lady of Yoga” since her 1972 PBS series, Lilias! Yoga and You

T
he essence of yoga, no matter its style, is a journey of self-discovery and transformation. It becomes a way of life that embraces a system of physical science, while honoring the quest for mental and emotional stability and balance. Millions of U.S. practitioners of all ages enjoy the benefits of increased flexibility and muscle strength, better posture and alignment, and decreased stress. As their practice deepens, they also experience yoga’s larger gift: a body/ mind attunement that nurtures mental clarity, emotional composure and a greater sense of overall well-being. The titans interviewed incorporate various techniques and approaches. Yet, they all agree upon the following handful of principles, designed to inspire, facilitate and heighten anyone’s yoga practice.
Be Present in the Moment Yoga… is about the power of now, being present in the moment. Anytime, [you can] take a few deep breaths and find a peaceful space within. ~ Beth Shaw, founder of YogaFit Enjoy the moment; don’t be inhibited by the past or future. You are in a timeless space, connected to the infinite. ~ Sharon Gannon, co-creator of Jiva Mukti Yoga Try this healing exercise: Sit up, put your hands in your lap, 38 Lehigh Valley www.healthylehighvalley.com
If you bring your attention to your breathing, you become present; develop this muscle of being present by focusing on the breath. ~ Bryan Kest, creator of Power Yoga Try this transformative exercise: If your mind becomes restless, relax your jaw and breathing, then become aware of the quality of your breath, using a soft inhale and exhale. Feel your belly move as breath enters and exits through the nostrils, like a guest. Choose to observe your breath and it will redirect the mind. ~ Lisa Walford, developer of YogaWorks teacher training program
Experience Health and Oneness with the Body Regular practice is key. Inevitably, if you do the postures enough, there’s magic to them. Even if you [begin with] no intention, yoga leads you to a state of union. Practicing yoga helps you remember that you’re already perfect, already free. ~ Sara Ivanhoe, creator of bestselling yoga DVDs If you don’t feel good in your body—if you can’t move forward with ease and not dis-ease—how can you feel good about anything? Yoga… makes us feel good about the bodies we are in. ~ Beth Shaw Yoga strengthens our life force and makes us stronger from deep inside; it builds life energy, prana, chi. ~ Vinnie Marino, Vinyasa flow teacher who employs music styles ranging from trance to rock
strengthen the mind through meditation
experience oneness with the spirit
The real power of yoga is in meditation, the qualities of the mind behind the action. Bring these meditative qualities into the physical practice, and it becomes meditation in motion. ~ Bryan Kest
For energy to be flowing, you have to be in tune and in balance not only with the nature around you, but [with] something that’s deeper inside you. This energy that’s in you, in me, in plants and animals, is the pure energy, the one life that connects us all. Who you are is an expression of consciousness, an expression of God. ~ Kim Eng, Qi Flow yoga teacher and partner of author Eckhart Tolle
Learn to concentrate on your mantra, your sacred words that you recite over and over again. My favorite is, “Let go‌ just let it go‌â€? ~ David Life, co-creator of Jiva Mukti yoga Practice pranayama [regulation of the breath] and meditation to improve concentration and the power of your mind. The mind creates emotions and thoughts; when the mind is healthy, the body and mind connect. Then you really find your soul essence, your consciousness. ~ Rajashree Choudhury, teacher of Bikram yoga
Yoga helps you [let go of] attachment to material things and empowers your soul. ~ Rajahshree Choudhury
The essence of yoga is truth and love‌ willingness to embrace the God that is within, recognizing that we are all connected. ~ Seane Corn, internationally celebrated yoga teacher Johannes R. Fisslinger is the co-founder of National Yoga Month and founder of Yoga-Recess in Schools. Both initiatives are coordinated by the Yoga Health Foundation. Seane Corn, a yoga superstar featured on magazine covers and Oprah.com, has been practicing yoga for 23 years and teaching for well over a decade. She has also taken her yoga “off the mat,” inspiring activism and raising funds for programs around the world that serve at-risk youth and AIDS/HIV treatment and prevention. Natural Awakenings asked this renowned teacher to share her advice on choosing a style of yoga and creating a home practice.
C
orn observes that personality may initially predispose a student to prefer one style of yoga over another. “For example, the style of yoga I teach is Vinyasa, a fluid form of yoga,” she says. “It tends to draw people who are more athletic and perhaps more goal-oriented or self-competitive—those who prefer a practice that feels more like a workout.” This style of so-called flow yoga can also be very emotionally therapeutic, she adds. Students who want to try more vigorous yoga styles like Vinyasa or Ashtanga should have a basic understanding of how to build yoga asanas (postures), in-

tegrate the breath and work with their body’s flexibility. “In my dream world, students would know that there are techniques they need to understand before they approach a more challenging or fluid practice,” says Corn. “That would mean either going to a very beginner-level class or an Iyengar class. For some students, that may feel too slow, but it’s providing the appropriate information that’s going to give them longevity in their practice.” Likewise, she recommends Iyengar if an individual is recovering from an injury. Without proper technique, students can compromise their knees, lower backs and necks, Corn counsels. She explains that while Iyengar is quite a methodical and precise style for teaching fundamentals, styles like Kripalu, characterized as “meditation in motion,” can be more forgiving. Once people begin to practice, physical and life changes may lead to the exploration of other styles. This is true for Corn, who has studied many traditions over the years. “When I was younger, I wouldn’t have considered an Iyengar or a Kripalu class,” she recalls. “It was only Ashtanga or Vinyasa. Now that I’m in my 40s—or even back in my 30s—I’ve wanted a deeper practice that has more space and more areas of stillness and connection, which seems to match my growth as a person.” For those who are grounded in yoga fundamentals and want a home practice, Corn recommends setting aside 30 minutes to an hour at least three days a week. “If you have a half-hour, I would recommend 10 minutes of sun salutes, 10 minutes of standing poses and 10 minutes of backbends, forward bends and a resting pose.” Turn off phones and other distractions, she advises, and focus. The more sacred, intentional and meaningful a home practice is, the more likely one is to regard it as more than an exercise routine. “I set up an altar with things that are important to me,” remarks Corn. “When I put my palms together, I’ll set an intention and ask Spirit that the practice be a reflection of my devotion, a dedication to something greater than myself.” At 43, Corn credits her yoga practice and diet (avoiding meat, fish, dairy, sugar, alcohol, caffeine and chemical additives) with maintaining her good health.
“My bones are strong, my muscles and joints are quite supple, and my hormonal system is in really good shape,” she reports. “I don’t have PMS or other [premenopausal] symptoms and my skin looks good and clear. More importantly, I’m just very comfortable in my body and confident on my feet.” As with any physical undertaking, anyone with a pre-existing
injury or medical condition should consult a doctor before beginning a yoga practice. Corn advises students to, “Find a teacher who can meet you where you are.” Once on the mat, she says, explore what feels right and allow your practice to evolve as you do. Ananda: A form of gentle Hatha yoga with an emphasis on meditation. Ananda combines classic yoga postures with breathing and silent affirmations to attune with higher levels of body sense, energy and silent inner awareness. As an inner-directed practice, it has less appeal to those desiring a more athletic or aerobic experience. Anusara: Anusara means “go with the flow,” and blends spirituality with inner/outer alignment and balanced energetic actions. Developed by John Friend in 1997, this style urges students to think of poses as artistic expressions of the heart. Individual abilities and limitations are deeply respected and honored, so Anusara yoga can be helpful for everyone and is good for beginners. Ashtanga: A physically demanding style that is light on meditation, Ashtanga yoga employs a fast-paced series of flowing poses to build strength, flexibility and stamina. Developed by Indian yoga master Sri K. Pattabhi Jois, Ashtanga’s progressively difficult postures are synchronized with a loud breath (called Ujyaii breath in Sanskrit) and are designed to produce intense internal heat and purifying sweat in order to detoxify muscles and organs. The room is usually heated to warm muscles and increase flexibility. Preferred by many athletes, this style is too intense and demanding for most beginners.
Y
oga originated some 5,000 years ago in India, designed as a means to release tension in the body, bring calmness to the mind and provide an ethical code to live by. The word yoga is derived from the Sanskrit root yuj, meaning to yoke or unite, and refers to the integration of physical and mental exercises designed to unite body, mind and spirit. Regular practice of yoga has proved to enhance flexibility, strength, stamina and concentration. It works to induce deep relaxation and reduce stress, tone 42

the body and organs, increase vitality and improve circulation and energy flow. Uplifting and meditative, yoga can be a spiritual practice, as well. Although many styles of yoga exist, most of the differences derive from the primary focus of the practitioner’s attention: precise alignment of the body; holding of the asanas, or postures; flow between the postures; breath and movement coordination; or inner awareness and meditation. No particular style is better than another, and many students practice more than one.

Dao Yin: Dao Yin means to guide and lead the energy of your yoga practice. Dao Yin Yoga techniques guide the qi (energy) and stretch the body in order to heal your body, mind and spirit. Its fluent and harmonious movements provide mental strength and physical agility while developing deep health and body awareness. The exercises are aimed at improving energy circulation within the whole body, to loosen the joints, tone up and oxygenate the muscles and to relax the nervous system. Hatha: Hatha yoga is the foundational discipline on which nearly all other styles are based. In Sanskrit, ha represents the sun and tha, the moon—hence, the practice is designed to bring the yin and yang, light and dark, masculine and feminine aspects and polarities into balance. Essentially, Hatha yoga brings all aspects of life together. A class described as hatha will likely include slow-paced stretching, asanas, or postures, that are not too difficult, simple breathing exercises and perhaps, seated meditation. Hatha yoga classes provide a good starting point for beginners, who can learn basic poses and relaxation techniques.

Hot Yoga: A strenuous style, designed to make students sweat, taught in rooms heated to a minimum of 90º Fahrenheit. The superheated rooms facilitate stretching and allow the body to release toxins through perspiration. A series of demanding poses are performed in a specific order, to promote optimal health and proper function of every bodily system. Hot yoga is a good choice for highly fit individuals and seasoned students seeking a challenge. Integral: A gentle style of yoga brought to this country in 1966 by Sri Swami Satchidananda. Classes are structured to balance physical effort with relaxation and include breathing practices, chanting and both guided and silent meditation. Integral yoga is suitable for beginners and helpful for more advanced students who wish to deepen their physical and spiritual awareness. Integrative yoga therapy: Gentle postures, guided imagery, assisted stretching and breathwork help to make this yoga a useful style for rehab centers and hospitals. Joseph LePage began this therapy in the early 1990s to help promote healing and wellbeing for individuals facing heart disease, cancer, AIDS and psychiatric disorders. Iyengar: Noted for precise alignment and symmetry of postures, the development of balance, and the use of props such as blocks, balls and belts. The Iyengar style of yoga was developed by B.K.S. Iyengar, based on an exceptional understanding of how the body works. Poses are held longer than usual. Iyengar is a good style for beginners, but can challenge seasoned practitioners, as well. Kripalu: An integrated practice that emphasizes breathing and alignment and coordinates the breath with movement. Kripalu, also called the yoga of consciousness, was developed by Amrit Desai, a long-time student of Kundalini yoga master Swami Kripaluvananda. This style incorporates three stages of development, beginning with postural alignment and progressing to meditation, with longer posture holding, finally creating a meditation in motion, where the movement from one posture to another happens unconsciously and spontaneously. Students are encouraged to honor “the wisdom of the body” and to work according to the limits of their flexibility and strength. Kripalu is suitable for everyone, from beginners to advanced students.

Kundalini: A powerful, enlightening style that incorporates mantras (chanting), meditation, visualization, breathing and guided relaxation, with precise postures. According to Hindu philosophy, kundalini is a concentrated form of prana, or life force, represented by a coiled, sleeping serpent said to reside at the base of the spine. When breath and movement awaken the serpent (energy), it moves up the spine through each of the seven chakras (energy centers) of the body, bringing energy and bliss. Once a closely guarded secret in India, kundalini yoga was first brought to the West in 1969 and has been known to help with addictions and releasing endorphins in the body. Kundalini will not appeal to everyone and should be practiced under the supervision of an experienced teacher. Phoenix Rising Yoga Therapy: Promotes healing and a deep connection with self. A private session is a process lasting 90 minutes. Through assisted yoga postures and non-directive dialogue, practitioners guide clients to connect to their physical and emotional selves. Using focused breathing, this connection is explored, fostering release, discovery and healing. Group classes and stress management programs use these same techniques in a group setting. Power Fusion: The concept of this class is to challenge the body and mind in a power vinyasa flow that focuses on strengthening the core and upper body. Developing strength, balance, flexibility and endurance benefit all areas of your life. Ideal for those looking to push limits. Instructors often vary approaches to this free form practice.

Vinyasa: A challenging style that matches breath to movement. Vinyasa yoga poses incorporate alignment principles and are woven together in a flowing practice that is both intense and dance-like. Translated from Sanskrit, vinyasa means “without obstacle. The style is best suited to energetic, physically fit students. Viniyoga: A transformative, slower and more individualized form of yoga that emphasizes gentle flow and coordinated breath with movement. Viniyoga yoga is holistic in its approach and teaches the student how to apply the yoga tools of poses, chanting, breathing and meditation. Function is stressed over form in this style. ccording to www.ReikiInHospitals.org, more than one million U.S. adults have received at least one Reiki session in their life. That number is growing thanks to wider adoption of this method of stress reduction and healing, including in such traditional medical settings as hospitals, medical clinics and hospice programs. Claiming origins in early Christian healing practices, laying on of hands for healing purposes is now practiced worldwide under many different names. One is Reiki, developed in Japan during the mid-19th century by Dr. Mikao Usui, who received the ability of “healing without energy depletion following three weeks of fasting and meditating on Mount Kuarma near Kyoto. Hawayo Takata then introduced Reiki into the United States early in the following century. Present day styles of Reiki vary, though all have their foundation in Usui Shiki Ryoho Reiki, the traditional form largely taught by independent teachers and Reiki Masters who often form their own schools to instruct students in Reiki levels I, II and III. True Reiki practice channels Universal energy rather than the energy of one’s own localized field. Though as late as the early 1980s, journalists covering alternative healing therapies tended to make light of Reiki, by the early 1990s a shift had taken place, and Reiki began to be viewed more positively. Now scientific-based studies such as those published in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine lend added credibility. According to Reiki teacher and practitioner Paula Michal-Johnson, PhD of In the Heart of Reiki; “When finding the Reiki style that is right for you, it is easiest to start with the two primary branches of Reiki teaching and practice: Traditional Japanese Reiki emphasizing spiritual healing of the self and Western Reiki, where the dominant focus is on healing others. “Traditional Japanese Reiki focuses on deepening the practice of the classical system of Reiki through meditation, chanting and rituals to strengthen understanding of the five precepts, then expands to hands on healing of others, she explains. She says many Western Reiki classes also are more eclectic and may incorporate teaching of the Chakra system, use of pendulums and additional symbols brought in from Tibetan and Sanskrit traditions while traditional Japanese Reiki uses only four symbols and the notion of the hara energy centers. “You will find excellent practitioners in whichever tradition you choose. Michal-Johnson suggests reading about the choices available, then interviewing several practitioners to discern the right match. Re-introducing the original style of Reiki to people in its simple, authentic form is something that Marcella Hilferty, founder of A Light Touch Teaching and Healing Center in Easton, has undertaken. The center offers Jikiden Reiki; meaning “directly taught or “directly passed on. That is, Jikiden Reiki is practiced exactly as it was handed down to its founder, Mikao Usui.
www.healthylehighvalley.com
The broadening of spiritual awareness is an important concept of Jikiden Reiki. Hilferty says its emphasis is on treatment, and so those people who do not feel they want to get into “spirituality” can easily accept and use Jikiden Reiki. Those who are spiritually aware and looking for more will also be delighted with the effect Jikiden Reiki has on their lives. Cat Coley, a Reiki master/teacher and Reiki drumbeat Master/Teacher, was first introduced to Reiki healing after suffering from a number of stress related symptoms. After receiving her own Reiki treatments, she began taking Reiki classes and attending hand-drumming classes. During what she calls a “powerful spiritual experience,” she says she was given the art of Reiki drumming from her spirit guides. “I was told by my guides to teach and practice Reiki drumming, which I call Reiki Drumbeat.” Coley learned how to produce her own line of Reiki drumbeat healing drums, which she now sells. She explains that when one receives a Reiki drumbeat treatment, it brings that person back into balance with his or her own personal optimum vibration for wellness, and all of the unfriendly vibes are dissipated by the Reiki drumbeat treatment. “Reiki drumbeat treatments help you to balance your own energy in synchronicity with the planet, which is important for your continued well-being,” she explains. “Reiki drumbeat treats the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual parts of you.” Authoritative basic information about Reiki can be found on the National Institutes for Health website nccam. nih.gov/health/reiki/ For more information regarding upcoming Traditional Japanese Reiki Shoden classes beginning February or ongoing Western classes, contact Paula Michal-Johnson, In the Heart of Reiki, Fountain Hill. 610-866-0788..
