t’s amazing what we can do when we tune in to our natural creativity… yet somehow I grew up wondering why I didn’t seem to have a creative bone in my body. Even my childhood stick figures seemed to lack symmetry and I still cannot play a musical instrument. When it comes to originating something of lasting artistic value, I’ve left that to the professionals. Still, I’ve always appreciated listening to music, and lately I’ve been splashing acquired bits of inspired art around my home along with other creative touches. Fortunately, I’ve always been able to find some creative twist in my work. For example, after graduating high school, I was tasked with creating an electrical control panel for a new system at Carpenter Technology’s specialty steel mill in Reading. The cover of the control box showed the complete production flow, with lights and switches to help operators visualize and control the entire process. When finished, it looked like it was straight out of a Star Trek episode. I learned much about myself and my potential during that client project and I still smile at my sense of satisfaction when my supervisor said the customer was highly pleased with his new “work of art”. That was 30 years ago, and I wonder if my creation is still benefiting the workforce along the Schuylkill River? These days, I’m daily challenged to use every bit of my creative abilities in order to bring this monthly magazine to life. Judith Fertig’s feature article “Handmade Happiness,” on page 28, is an encouraging reminder that it’s never too late to make our childhood passions come alive or to create something brand new which causes us to thrive. Participants explore how applying creative skill in one medium or another is a capacity that virtually anyone can develop with practice. I keeping with our Creativity theme, we also explore ways to create the life you want with Dr. Mary Alice Long, on page 32. She guides her clients toward embracing their playful, creative natures in a passionate, purposeful life. September also brings National Yoga Month. Natural Awakenings’ 87 communities are co-sponsoring the event at YogaMonth.org, an organization devoted to raising the awareness of the many healthful benefits of yoga practice. Our community spotlight on page 44 further explores the possibilities with local yoga pioneer Jessie Thompson and her own creative miracle, The Yoga Loft of Bethlehem. You’ll find a directory of free or donation based local yoga classes this month on page 49. Our calendar is packed with area events with creative spins on fun and health. The Mid-Atlantic Energy Festival on July 16-18, in Kempton, engages us in a three-day celebration of homegrown green living solutions. The same weekend invites us to the 19th annual Fall Spiritual and Holistic expo, in Allentown. Those are only a few of the inspiring options for you to explore.

Here’s to ever more creative living,

Reid Boyer, Publisher

Active Management for Chronic Pain

Romance meets Healthy Living and You’re Invited

llentown’s unique personal training and fitness facility, Body Elite, is now offering a technique called Active Pain Management, which promotes the relief of chronic pain in areas including the lower back, shoulders, knees and hips. Created by Body Elite founder, Stephen Vassallo, the technique involves resistance stretching in combination with resistance training, administered by a highly skilled practitioner. The name refers to the proactive nature of the therapy on the part of the client, and is meant to differentiate it from passive, pharmaceutical-based alternatives. “Muscle imbalances over time result in chronic pain,” says Vassallo. “Think about how a tight hamstring or latissimus muscle can contribute to lower back pain. These muscles will constantly pull on the lower back area while poorly conditioned opposing muscles do their best to compensate. The result is a constant state of muscle tension which ultimately expresses itself as chronic pain. By conditioning the muscles through resistance training and cardio work, the client is better prepared to participate in and maintain the results. The Resistance Flexibility® is a technique which requires the client to contract (resist) a muscle while simultaneously being moved (stretched) through a range of motion. That’s the ‘Active’ part. This stretching technique elongates and rebalances muscles and alleviates the pain.” Body Elite is located at 3243 Hamilton Boulevard in Allentown. Contact Alyssa Rader at 610.770.0884 or visit BodyElitePA. com for more information.

Tai Chi Can Turn Depression Around

A

recent study published in the online edition of The American Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry reveals that more than 2 million people age 65 and older suffer from depression, including 50 percent of nursing home residents. In seeking an alternative to aggressive drug treatments, researchers at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), turned to a gentle, westernized version of Tai chi, a 2,000-year-old Chinese martial art. During the study, 112 adults age 60 or older that had been diagnosed with major depression were treated with a standard antidepressant drug for four weeks. The 73 adults that showed only partial improvement continued to receive the medication, but were also assigned to 10 weeks of either Tai chi or health education classes. The group practicing Tai chi experienced greater improvement in their levels of depression, as well as an enhanced quality of life, better cognition and more overall energy than the non-practicing group. Dr. Helen Lavretsky, the study’s first author and a UCLA professor-in-residence of psychiatry, says, “This study shows that adding a mind-body exercise like Tai chi, that is widely available in the community, can improve the outcomes of treating depression in older adults that may also have other, coexisting medical conditions or cognitive impairment. With Tai chi, we may be able to treat these conditions without exposing them to additional medications.”

Living Abroad Boosts Creativity

S

tudents that have lived abroad appear to be more creative than peers that haven’t had such an experience, according to a study in Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin. Enhanced creativity was linked directly to the students’ openminded approach in adapting to a new culture in another country. Results indicated that multicultural learning is a critical component of the adaptation process, which acts as a catalyst for creativity.

News and resources to inspire concerned citizens to work together in building a healthier, stronger society that benefits all.

Since its inception in 1981 at the United Nations, Peace Day has marked personal and planetary progress toward peace. Each year, events commemorating and celebrating peace involve millions of people throughout the world. This year’s 30th anniversary theme, Make Your Voice Heard, pays tribute to the many civil society activists that have lent the strength of their imagination to the institution of peace. Anyone can celebrate Peace Day. It can be as simple as lighting a candle at noon and just sitting in silent meditation. Or, it may evolve into engaging co-workers, organizations, communities or local government in a larger event. The impact of coming together for one day of peace is immense. The International Day of Peace is also a Day of Ceasefire—both personal and political. Why not take this opportunity to make peace in your own relationships as a start to positively influencing the larger conflicts of our time, by holding participants kindly in your thoughts? Imagine what a whole day of ceasefire could mean to humankind.

Harnessing the power of tidal currents to produce electricity may seem like a new idea, but President Franklin D. Roosevelt started the first U.S. government test project in Eastport, Maine. The site sits across from Canada’s Nova Scotia on the American side of the Bay of Fundy, known for its tremendous tides. “The tides are about as reliable as anything in nature, so you can predict years in advance how much power you will have at a given time—that’s a great advantage,” says Paul Jacobson, Ph.D., ocean energy leader of the Electric Power Research Institute. New tidal technologies are inspired by wind turbines and are mounted on the seafloor, where they slowly spin in the current, out of sight. Ongoing tests by the University of Maine suggest no effect on marine life, which seem to avoid the devices. Several companies are in the hunt to be the industry pioneer, but the Maine-based Ocean Renewable Power Company already has plans to deploy a full-scale 150-kilowatt unit, the first tidal device to be connected to a U.S. electrical grid, off of Eastport later this year. They expect to add more units by 2015, to initially yield a total of five megawatts of current, enough to power about 4,000 homes.

T

he best definition of intuition is that which we know in our hearts to be true. When we feel good and right about a decision, we often attribute it to having followed our intuition. There is a difference, however, between what “feels good” and what we “know in our hearts.” Discerning this difference separates wishful thinking from true intuitive intelligence. Intuitive intelligence can be identified by the qualities that accompany it, like effortlessness, clarity, inspired ideas, synchronicity and profound peace. As these qualities also represent the spiritual substance of our selves, the intuitive insights we receive resonate with the truth of our being. When faced with a challenging choice, it helps to look for

Jumping into action out of frustration is not intuitively intelligent, while waiting for answers that bring clarity and inner peace is a flawless guide. To move through the layers of confusion and emotion when facing a dilemma, it helps to identify both what we want and what is needed. Confusion often characterizes the conflict between our personal agenda, which may be hidden from us, and the action that the situation genuinely calls for. The following

growing up listening to crossover artists like Manu Dibango, Miriam Makeba, Hugh Masekela and Sergio Mendes, I see a universal connection to melodydriven music with interesting rhythms and beautiful voices, even if it’s in other languages or uses unfamiliar instrumentation.

What are you trying to achieve in your Putumayo Presents compilations? Putumayo looks for universally appealing music that everyone can relate to. I refer to it as, “the spirit of Bob Marley”—I don’t know of anyone who can listen to his songs and not enjoy them. Every album attempts to encapsulate the best elements of a culture and music of an area or region. We carefully curate each thematic album so that, rather than a collection of random tracks, it is a musical journey that will uplift listeners and interest them not only in the music, but also in the culture and the region. Every year, I receive emails and letters from people that have been inspired by the music to travel to a place they’ve discovered through our albums. We hope that more and more people will dig deeper by traveling to these countries, buying the works of individual artists and creating real connections.

How does Putumayo give back to the cultures whose music it shares with the world? For example, do you try to preserve “endangered species” of music? We don’t set out to save dying genres of music, but one of the byproducts of our work is a greater awareness of other cultures and musical traditions. We’re particularly interested in finding musical gems that may not be known to people inside or outside of their country. In the process, we help people recognize and value the strong musical heritage they have. Sometimes we discover artists that become featured on

What are some of the trends you see in world music today? For centuries, trading caravans would bring new instruments and songs to different regions, in turn, influencing the music of an area. Today, with the explosion of digital music, there is more music cross-fertilization than ever. African, Asian and Australian musicians can now hear each other’s music through tour concerts, the Internet and other media. Almost everyone can now similarly access music from around the world; at the same time, this means there is that much more for people to sift through. The music of the world is an ocean of millions of songs. Putumayo employs several people to do just that—search the world to identify little-known music that people all over will love. movie soundtracks or are signed by a major label as a result of their collaboration with Putumayo. While we focus on presenting great music rather than countering stereotypes and cultural misperceptions, that often ends up being a healthy side effect. Much of the music we promote comes from parts of the world struggling with poverty, war and other issues; some are commonly associated with negative connotations in the Western media. Yet many of these places have rich traditions that are mostly accessible to outsiders through music, art and food. New Orleans, the city I now call home, is a great example of a place that is trying to rise above various challenges and misperceptions.

HANDMADE HAPPINESS A Hands-On Approach to Authentic Living by Judith Fertig

Making something by hand—and getting good at it—can add a welcome dimension to our lives. The art of participating in craftwork gives us a sense of competence and completion that may be difficult to find in our digital, ephemeral world.

A

merica’s resurging interest in arts and crafts today comes at a time when making things by hand seems an endangered activity. Why? In The Craftsman, sociologist and author Richard Sennett maintains that making things by hand is an, “enduring, basic human impulse, the desire to do a job well for its own sake.” He observes that craft and craftsmanship can enrich modern life in ways that might surprise us. The Arts and Crafts movement, which reigned from the mid-1800s through the early 20th century, was a major response to a commercial trend that steered society away from handmade toward machine-made products in Europe and North America. The movement encouraged amateur, student and professional involvement in the making of furniture, decorative glass, textiles, pottery and other forms that are beautiful, as well as functional. Yet today, we face a new barrier to creating more by hand, observes Monica Moses, editor-in-chief of American Craft magazine (American CraftMag.org), published by the nonprofit American Craft Council. “Modern life offers a million distractions, a million ways to kill time, or at least stand by idly while it expires,” she says. Mindless television watching, puttering around 28 Lehigh Valley www.healthylehighvalley.com

on Facebook or playing computer solitaire add up. “Such semiconscious downtime can become a weekend, a habit, a lost opportunity.” Although many people return to an early love of arts and crafts during their retirement years, the good news is that such creative pursuits are also being taken up by young makers, according to Moses. “The marvel of it is that young people in the digital age are embracing craft so enthusiastically, not just their iPods and phone apps. We’re lucky to live in a time when engagement with the practice of craft is expanding.” She cites the popularity of buy-and-sell craft websites such as Etsy. com, which reported 2010 sales of more than $400 million. Moses, who makes jewelry in her free time, values handcrafting for a simple reason: “It feeds my soul,” she says. “Other parts of my life focus on the end result. When I’m making a piece, I’m focused on the process and I’m thinking, ‘This feels right.’”

Whether we wake to this artful phenomenon in childhood or later in life, it’s never too late to reap the benefits. According to crafters from various walks of life, such hands-on experiences help us to enhance our well-being, ground our everyday lives, and give renewed purpose.

In craft and craftsmanship we nametags and other decorative items. “I always a crafty, creative kid, learnexperience the development of was ing to embroider from one grandmother critical thinking, imagination, and how to make seed flowers from the the ability to play, a source other,” she recalls. “Since both sets of grandparents lived through the Depres® of pride, awaken even validationl ngs of sion, they were always repurposing things, recycling before it was cool.” our existence.

notice in my photography that I was most interested in close-ups of tree bark, ripples in water bodies and cracks in the rocks. My quilts then began to take on a more abstract quality,” she says. So Ciolino took a class in Columbus, Ohio, with Nancy Crow, recognized by many as “the mother of contemporary quilts,” and never looked back. She still gives quilts as gifts, but her work is now also exhibited at museums and quilt shows (SandraPalmer Ciolino.com; NancyCrow.com). Like many craftspeople, Ciolino’s process in creating art is part technical skill and part intuitive imagining. When she starts a new quilt, she pulls fabrics from her workroom into groupings that appeal to her. She then takes a black-

and-white photo to make sure the values of light and dark in the fabrics create an interesting pattern. Next, she uses a rotary cutter to cut the fabric by hand—like drawing a line with a pencil—into shapes freehand, without referring to any pattern. Finally, she sews the pieces together in a composition and uses machine quilting to add another layer of textural interest, finishing each creation by hand. “The craft is when I make something as meticulous and impeccable as I can,” Ciolino concludes. “The art is when I bring an authentic version of myself—my voice and spirit—to the work.”

this?” The third is to open up—figure out how to create something unique. “To deploy these capabilities, the brain needs to process visual, aural, tactile and language-symbol information simultaneously,” says Sennett. Working pleasurably with the hands also helps to enhance brain chemistry according to author Kelly Lambert, Ph.D., a psychology professor and lead researcher with the Lambert Behavioral Neuroscience Laboratory at Randolph-Macon College, in Ashland, Virginia. Lambert, author of Lifting Depression: A Neuroscientist’s Approach to Activating Your Brain’s Healing Power, makes the case for hands-on crafts like gardening, cooking and knitting as antidotes to depression. In a “Reconsidering Crafts” segment on Wisconsin Public Radio, she remarked: “We’re still carrying around a brain that appreciates working in the dirt and planting and hunting and preparing food.” Using both hands to do something enjoyable, like knitting a scarf, entails engaging in a repetitive motion that produces calming serotonin. Lambert adds that counting stitches distracts us from other worries or concerns, and knitting something that we find pleasing and seeing the process through to completion activates what she refers to as the effort-driven reward circuit in the brain. This further prompts the release of the feel-good brain chemicals dopamine, serotonin and endorphins, she adds.

Sandra Palmer Ciolino learned to sew as a child, but didn’t maximize the creativity of her craft until her children were grown, when she was in her 40s. For Ciolino, of Cincinnati, Ohio, “Making contemporary quilts satisfies my desire to work in solitude and fulfills my longing to create lasting and beautiful art. Creating quilts for the wall marries many things I love—fabric, color, com“The hand is the window position, piecing and machine quilting.” on to the mind.” Ciolino fondly remembers her ~ Immanuel Kant mother’s handiwork. “I have a vivid memory of her taking a navy blue overcoat of my father’s and using it to by Judith Fertig sew me a winter coat with cranberry piping; I was so proud of that coat.” She began by making doll clothes, f all our limbs,” explains Proand then started sewing clothing for fessor Richard Sennett, “the herself in junior high school, doing her hands make the most varied own garment construction. “The technimovements, movements that can be cal stuff came early,” she says. ARTFUL

KIDS Hands-On Creativity Nurtures Mind, Body and Spirit by Judith Fertig

K

ids’ active participation in the creative arts helps them develop physically, mentally, emotionally and socially—whether they are painting, drawing, shaping pottery, performing in plays or musicals, dancing, storytelling, or making music. Studies culled by educators at Arizona’s Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts confirm the multiple benefits, ranging from higher SAT scores to increases in self-esteem and improved ability to handle peer pressure. Yet, with shrinking school budgets, cutting back on what are considered non-core subjects such as music and art is the path that many school districts are forced to take, explains Anne Bryant, Ph.D., executive director of the National School Boards Association. Communities, in turn, must find new ways to counter this new financial reality. For example, an elementary school music or art teacher, once devoted to a single school, now may have to travel to several throughout a district. 34 Lehigh Valley www.healthylehighvalley.com

“Schools are under so much pressure due to dwindling resources and the No Child Left Behind legislation that sometimes the children who most need the arts are put in remedial classes instead,” says Susan Tate, a former teacher who is now executive director of Kansas’ Lawrence Arts Center. Add in our digital culture—where hands-on most often means a computer keyboard or phone-texting device—and domestic situations in which busy parents aren’t keen to clean up messy finger paints and other craft supplies, and the result is, “These days, kids also are less likely to do hands-on art at home,” adds Tate. At young ages, children are likely to be more passive than active learners, says Sharon Burch, a music educator in Mystic, Iowa. They may listen, for example, to whatever tunes their parents play, instead of simpler, more age-appropriate songs. Burch has helped fill the need by providing interactive Freddie the Frog resources for use by parents, as well as in music classrooms. Fortunately, communities across the country have rallied to offer afterschool and weekend arts and crafts programs. Many simple arts participation activities are easy for parents, grandparents and caregivers to do along with the kids.

Developing Mental Abilities

“Current studies of brain imaging and mapping show that the active making of music creates synapses in all four parts of the brain,” Burch says. By active, she means physically tapping out a rhythm with sticks, singing a song, dancing to a beat, marching, playing patty-cake or engaging in other age-appropriate, physical movement. “To really light up the brain, you have to do something, not just passively listen.” Making music helps kids think, create, reason and express themselves, adds Burch. Practicing the art of simple storytelling, as well as having adults regularly reading children’s literature with youngsters, can also have a profound impact. A 2003 study published in the American Educator, based on exhaustive research by Ph.D. psychologists Todd Risley and Betty Hart, showed that by age 4, a huge gap in vocabulary skills exists between children of different economic levels. Those growing up in a household of educated, professional people hear a cumulative 32 million more spoken words (1,500 more per hour) during these early years—and thus have a greater vocabulary—than those from welfare

families. The researchers further documented more than five times the instances of encouraging feedback. They discovered a direct correlation between the intensity of these early verbal experiences and later achievement. Risley and Hart attributed the meaningful difference to the increased interaction—more storytelling, reading and parent-child discussions—that typically takes place in more affluent households. Eco-Fashionista Summer Rayne Oakes Models the Future by Kristin J. Bender

has created a growing platform for taking eco-fashion mainstream. She’s seen firsthand how a more sustainable lifestyle can start with something as simple as choosing certified organic lip balm or a pair of shoes made from organic cotton and recycled rubber.

B

ecause of her close ties to environmental causes, Oakes is known as “The eco-model.” The title seems to fit her well: She has put her name behind many cause-related programs, including a skincare company that uses active natural ingredients and a maker of recycled eyewear that plants a tree for every pair of frames sold. She didn’t set out to be the eco-fashionista. Oakes, whose first name derived from being born, she states, on a “rainy summer day,” was raised amid Pennsylvania farmlands north of Scranton and developed a love of nature from an early age. By 13, she was the youngest member of her hometown’s environmental advisory council and after high school, went off to Cornell University, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in natural resources and entomology. 36 Lehigh Valley www.healthylehighvalley.com

While researching toxins in sewage sludge and identifying aquatic insects, the 5-foot, 10-inch, willowy brunette also began modeling while at college, and conceived the idea that the fashion industry might be the right forum for her to take a leading role in expanding environmental awareness. Her first venture, Organic Portraits, an avant-garde photography project, brought to life sustainable design and conservation in one package.

Runaway Success Armed with brains, beauty and an affinity with the natural world, Oakes signed with her first modeling agency after graduating. Today, at 27, she has built her own brand as a business consultant and spokeswoman, author and entrepreneur in the multibillion-dollar industry of environmentally friendly apparel and home products. Oakes says that being in nature is what makes her come to life. “I carry that with me through all of my work in the fashion industry. It keeps me incredibly grounded and gives me an opportunity to work with companies and organizations that mirror my values or operate in the spirit of becoming better stewards,” she says.

Oakes is as appealing as the products she represents. In addition to her creative input, she has put her stamp of approval on both Portico Home + Spa linens and bath products and Payless ShoeSource’s zoe&zac line of shoes and handbags. Oakes also is working with Modo on a collection of recycled eyewear under its Eco brand, which she notes will be tied in with some of her personal reforestation and sustainable design projects worldwide. Her work with Aveeno on its Be An Active Natural Campaign supports the message that small changes can add up to a big difference. She sometimes blogs about her experiences at SummerRayne.net; a recent post explained how she chooses which Earth-friendly companies she’ll support. “An engaging partnership is a critical component for me to [be] a spokesperson,” she writes. “On countless occasions, I have had to turn down offers if the partnership didn’t seem suitable. But how exciting it is to find brands that are ready to step up to the challenge and have the spirit, resources and energy to make meaningful change happen from the inside out.”

Eco-Fashion Trends

expected to continue to grow. Organic Exchange projected a 20 to 40 percent jump in both 2010 and 2011, which could result in a $6 billion market this year. Oakes supports the industry via Source4Style.com, a forum she recently co-founded to connect designers with sustainable material suppliers from around the world. A finalist for the prestigious Cartier Women’s Initiative Awards, it already has been frequented by the likes of fashion designer Christian Siriano. Oakes is not alone—other celebrities and designers like Bono, Stella McCartney and Vivienne Westwood have added their voices in raising awareness of the importance of socially and environmentally conscious fashion. Oakes has modeled for such industry giants as Levi Strauss, Payless, Replay Jeans and others, but her activism and modeling have also allowed her to branch out into other industries. She says that her bestselling book, Style, Naturally: The Savvy Shopping Guide to Sustainable Fashion and Beauty, is aimed at, “... women that love style, but may not have ‘environment’ in their lexicon,” and serves as, “an irreverent, witty guide for green virgins.” “Sustainable design will continue to evolve,” she says. “Ten years ago, there were only a handful of designers operating in the industry. Now, most companies are asking how it can be authentically built into the core of their business.” How will that happen? they#1 have to believe and Issue Ad“First, Proof - April 2011 embody it.”

Oakes’ timing in applying her passions and skills to the green and clean marketplace is apt. Fresh juice is obviously preferred to packaged juice from a taste standpoint, as well. One significant distinction is that commercially prepared juice is heat pasteurized to kill pathogens. As Dr. Andrew Weil remarks, “Unfortunately, while heat treating can help keep store-bought juices safe, it also destroys enzymes, lowers vitamin concentrations and alters the taste— juice becomes blandly sweet, rather than featuring a natural symphony of complex and subtle flavors.” So drink deep and enjoy fresh juices’ bountiful benefits.

Because watermelons are full of organic water, they act as a natural diuretic to tonify and cleanse kidneys. The recipe’s spicy ginger and cooling mint will stimulate and support digestion. This simple, delicious juice requires only a blender to prepare. Yield: 2-4 servings 6 cups cubed watermelon, chilled (about 1½ lbs) 1-2 Tbsp ginger, chopped 1 cup mint leaves Juice of 1 lime Pinch of sea salt Pinch of cayenne pepper (optional) 1. Place all ingredients in a blender at high speed until smooth. 3. Pour through a fine strainer or sieve; for well-strained results, line the strainer or colander with cheesecloth. 2. Serve chilled or over ice, garnished with a sprig of mint.

JUICING TIPS by Renée Loux n When you start juicing, use vegetables that you like, possibly carrots, celery and cucumber. Later, begin incorporating vegetables that are new to you or that you may be less fond of, such as kale and beets. n While sweet fruit juice is a delicious treat, most fruit contains a fair amount of sugar, so use fruit juices sparingly to keep calorie and sugar content in check. Choose fruits that contain a large amount of water, such as watermelon, and fruits that are less sweet, such as pomegranate, for optimum benefits. n Drink juice on an empty stomach for optimum absorption and health benefits. n Ginger is a delicious addition to almost any juice and will aid digestion, stimulate circulation and balance blood sugar. Researchers at the

American Heart Association and U.S. Food and Drug Administration have found that ginger can dramatically affect cardiovascular health, helping to prevent atherosclerosis, lower cholesterol levels and inhibit oxidation of low-density lipoprotein (LDL, aka bad cholesterol). n Whenever possible, use organically grown produce to prepare juices and prevent chemical residues from ending up in the drink. If organic produce is not available, peel or thoroughly wash produce using a vegetable brush to remove wax coating and reduce chemical residues. n Drink juice that’s as fresh as possible to retain and obtain the peak of nutritional benefits. If you need to store fresh juice, use a narrow-necked glass bottle to reduce its exposure to oxygen, which over time, breaks down delicate, vital nutrients.

Pomegranate Antioxidant Punch Pomegranates are a champion source of polyphenol antioxidants to help keep cells and skin young and beautiful and to sweep the body of free radicals from pollution and metabolic waste. Look for fruit with smooth, firm skin and a uniform shape. Red grapes contain an abundance of cell-protecting resveratrol, as well as age-defying antioxidant flavonoids and phenolic acids. Oranges are loaded with antioxidant vitamin C and carotenoids to disarm free radicals and fortify overall health. Add a splash of sparkling water for a lighter, scarlet colored, fizzy drink.

Yields: 2-4 servings 3 pomegranates, seeds separated 1½ cup red grapes ¼ cup fresh orange juice, apple juice, apple cider or water 1. Cut the pomegranates into quarters. 2. Separate the pomegranate seeds from the skin and pith. 3. Place pomegranate seeds in

blender with grapes and juice, cider or water. 4. Blend until smooth. 5. Pour through a mesh strainer or sieve and press with the back of a large spoon to extract all the juice. 6. Serve chilled. Source: Recipes are courtesy of Renée Loux; from The Balanced Plate and Living Cuisine.

Lemon Ginger Green Beauty Tonic At first sight, this juice appears intensely green, but it’s mild and delicious (in a healthy way). Both cleansing and fortifying, this tonic flushes and hydrates the system to grow beautiful skin, hair and an inner glow. Romaine lettuce is mild and juicy; parsley is rich in antioxidant vitamin C, minerals and chlorophyll; cucumber is full of silica for beautiful skin and hair; celery contains an optimum balance of potassium and sodium to promote nutrient uptake in cells; ginger fires up digestion; and lemon is full of vitamin C and electrolytes to hydrate the body. Some prefer tart, green apples for their bright taste and lower sugar content, although any firm, organic apple is welcome. Yields: 2-4 servings 1 head Romaine lettuce 6 stalks celery 1 cucumber ½ bunch parsley 2 organic green apples 1 lemon 1 inch of fresh ginger 1. Wash all of the produce. Separate the Romaine and cut the bottom stem into pieces that will easily fit through the juicer. Cut the cucumber into quarters lengthwise. Cut the apples into sections that will fit through the juicer. There is no need to remove seeds if the produce is organic. 2. Juice all ingredients in a vegetable juicer, alternating for easy processing. 3. Drink while the juice is fresh.

Spinal Decompression Therapy for Back Pain Relief by Beth Davis

A

t some point in our lives, most of us will experience some sort of back pain. No matter what the cause, it can be a debilitating problem—one that affects our quality of life. Unfortunately for millions of people, dealing with this pain has become the norm. But, according to local Chiropractor, Dr. Thomas Wachtmann, it doesn’t have to be.

40

Lehigh Valley

“You don’t have to live in pain,” he says. “For those who suffer from lower back pain, a pinched nerve, sciatica, neck pain, or other back problems, Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression Therapy (or Decompression Therapy) may provide relief.”

www.healthylehighvalley.com

Decompression Therapy is a gentle, non-surgical therapy that provides relief by gently reducing the pressure within spinal discs. The traction-based procedure uses a computerized decompression unit to slowly and methodically separate the bones of the spine. As the vertebrae are separated, pressure is slowly reduced within the disc, causing a vacuum effect. “You’ll experience several cycles of stretch and relaxation, which graduates to a peak over a period of several minutes,” explains Dr. Wachtmann. This vacuum takes pressure off the nerves and pulls oxygen, fluid and nutrients into the disc to speed healing. This can make a huge difference since the discs get worn down due to stress and injury. A specially designed table is used in which patients can either lie with their face down or up. One’s physical condition, clinical considerations, and comfort are all taken into account to decide which position is best. During the therapy, it is very important that patients be comfortable, therefore they are encouraged to speak up with regard to changing positions. For those patients concerned that Decompression Therapy is painful, Dr. Wachtmann says there is no need to worry. The procedure is designed to actually ensure that the patient is as comfortable as possible. So comfortable, in fact, that many fall asleep

long-term relief or effective management of their pain when they complete the entire program of treatments utilizing the Decompression Therapy,” states Dr. Wachtmann. Decompression Therapy is helping thousands of people who thought they would never eliminate the pain associated with simple tasks such as getting out of a chair. If you or somebody you know is suffering from chronic, debilitating, low back or neck pain, Dr.

Thomas Wachtmann and Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression Therapy could provide a solution. may provide relief.” during treatment. “This is the first time some have felt relief in a long time, so it can be very relaxing,” he notes. Therapy sessions typically last less than 20 minutes. Although it depends on the complexity and extent of the rehabilitation needed, Dr. Wachtmann typically treats patients three times a week for one month, transitioning from passive to active treatments as the individual responds. While it depends on the individual and their specific back problem, the majority of patients experience less pain after as few as 6-10 treatments, and most patients are released from treatment after eight weeks. He says that it is important to remember, however, that pain subsiding does not necessarily mean the discs and spine are completely healed, so it’s critical that patients follow through with the treatment protocol. He works with patients to customize a complete program—one targeting the function of the stabilization muscles—to fit each person’s unique needs and condition. “Exercise and adjunctive therapies such as heat, muscle stimulation, ultrasound, and cold therapy can assist in rehabilitation of these structures,” he says. “Our goal is to not only help heal the disc, but to also enhance muscular control and support of the back and neck.” Regular home exercise and periodic office visits will help individuals maintain their spinal health and reduce the probability of recurrence. “Clinical results of this type of therapy have been effective in over 75 percent of the patients treated, and most patients find natural awakenings

THE WONDERS OF

PROBIOTICS by Dr. Matthew J. Heller

The benefits of balanced intestinal microflora: When beneficial bacteria reign in an animal’s gut and the impact of harmful bacteria is controlled, a state of enhanced wellness ensues. The presence of good bacteria bolsters the immune system, enhances digestion of nutrients, defends against pathogens (harmful bacteria, toxins and viruses) and aids in production of cellular growth. The hardships of imbalanced intestinal microflora: When harmful bacteria infiltrate an animal’s gut, profound consequences result. The intestinal tract, in a weakened state, fails to act as a first line of defense against factors assailing the immune system. It thus allows harmful materials to cross into the bloodstream and trigger abnormal functioning of the immune system, causing it to attack substances and tissues normally present in the body. Examples of autoimmune diseases in pets include allergies, inflammatory bowel disease, rheumatoid arthritis and canine systemic lupus.

P

robiotics, aka beneficial living bacteria, when digested, are a proven aid to creating and maintaining a dog or cat’s healthy intestinal tract and overall wellness. In human and veterinary medicine alike, research has demonstrated that the consumption of probiotics is helpful in managing various gastrointestinal maladies such as chronic diarrhea, colitis, bloating and irritable bowel syndrome. Helpful studies include those from the Mayo Foundation for Medical Education and Research, Purina Pet Institute, and the American Journal of Veterinary Research. Typically, probiotics comprise a variation of lactic acid bacteria, such as Lactobacillus or Bifidobacterium. These strains occur naturally in cats and dogs, as examination of their feces has revealed in research published in veterinary and medical journals such as 42

Lehigh Valley

www.healthylehighvalley.com

Compendium, The Journal of Nutrition and The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. Thousands of different strains of bacteria exist, but it’s generally accepted that the most effective probiotics naturally occur in the animal’s body. Here’s a hint as to how probiotics work their intestinal magic: Promote a balanced, healthy gut. Beneficial bacteria work to compete against and defeat harmful bacteria in their colonization efforts in the intestinal lining. Their strategy is to take control of the real estate so harmful bacteria have less space to occupy. Maintaining a balanced state of intestinal microflora offers a natural protective barrier and keeps harmful bacteria from thriving and multiplying. Boost the immune system. Beneficial bacterial increase immunity by increasing levels of natural antibodies that help the body resist infection. These also stimulate the activity of versatile cells called macrophages, which produce substances that suppress harmful bacteria and other pathogens. When probiotics are delivered to a pet’s intestinal track, existing immune cells are able to consume and remove toxins. Produce vitamins and nutrients. B vitamins are vital to proper functioning and energy production in most animal bodies. Probiotics not only produce certain types of natural B vitamins, they also promote the absorption of B vitamins, folic acid and various amino acids.

When Probiotics Can Help Numerous threats may challenge a cat or dog’s ability to maintain balanced intestinal microflora. During times of illness, healthy intestinal tracts commonly swing out of balance as bad bacteria overpower good bacteria. This state of imbalance leads to gastrointestinal issues ranging from diarrhea or constipation to gas and bloating. Administering probiotics to restore a healthy balance may be appropriate in the following situations: A pet is young. Puppies and kittens have a fresh intestinal track, and supplementing them with probiotics can more rapidly establish the presence of beneficial bacteria.

A cat or dog has an autoimmune disease that manifests in gastrointestinal issues. Such inflammatory bowel disease is signaled by chronic diarrhea. A cat or dog is stressed or has recently experienced stress. Trips to the kennel, veterinarian’s office or grooming parlor, or the death or addition of a family member or pet, may constitute stressful disturbances that could weaken an animal’s overall immunity. A pet has compromised immunity due to age or illness. Supplemental probiotics may help in this case because of their ability to boost the immune system and vitamin-absorbing functions. An animal is currently receiving antibiotics. Antibiotics are renowned for destroying all bacteria, both beneficial and harmful, in the intestinal tract. Consult a holistic or integrative veterinarian regarding the administration of probiotic supplements during any prescribed course of antibiotics to ensure that doses are timed appropriately. Preventive measures are desired to maintain overall health. Bearing in mind the ounce-of-prevention theory, guardians may consider administering a daily probiotic to their pet to reinforce the presence of beneficial bacteria in their gut.

The Yoga Loft Making Life Better with Yoga by Beth Davis

N

early 20 years ago, Jessie Thompson, the owner and director of The Yoga Loft in Bethlehem, began experiencing some health problems that prompted her to seek a more holistic approach to health. Living in New York City at the time, she began practicing yoga at various schools throughout the city. After a move to Los Angeles, she continued her practice at Yoga Works in Santa Monica, where she studied with many of the country’s most respected and admired teachers including founders Maty Ezraty and Chuck Miller, Lisa Walford, Erich Schiffmann, Shiva Rea, Seane Corn, and more. In 1999, she completed the renowned Yoga Works Teacher Training program and began teaching at Yoga Works and other area schools before moving back to her hometown of Bethlehem in 2004. She commuted to NYC to manage a Yoga Works studio there, until 2006 when she was inspired to bring yoga to her own community. “I was coming from an area where yoga was so popular and such a part of an overall lifestyle,” explains Thompson. “Here, it seemed to be more of a novelty. People didn’t see it for what it could be.” Thompson, however, was determined to change that. 44 Lehigh Valley www.healthylehighvalley.com

In 2006, she opened The Yoga Loft in Bethlehem to offer inspiring yoga classes for beginner through advanced students in a variety of styles including Gentle Yoga, Prenatal Yoga, Vinyasa Flow Yoga, Kundalini Yoga and more. Classes were also added in Tai Chi, Bellydance, Pilates and Zumba. “Everything was done on a larger scale intentionally,” says Thompson. “I wanted to offer a full schedule with lots of choices so that people would be more likely to come in more often and realize that yoga is more than just a physical exercise—it can be transformative and such an important part of overall health and well-being.” Thompson began to incorporate a broader philosophy of yoga—focused more on our psychology and spirituality than our physical bodies —in both her classes and teacher training programs. In fact, the studio’s comprehensive yoga teacher training program is one in which Thompson is particularly proud. Designed for those who want to deepen their understanding of yoga practice and philosophy, the program is open to those who want to teach, as well as those who are simply interested in taking their yoga practice to a deeper level. The program is a 200-Hour in-depth study and teacher training that is registered and approved by the National Yoga Alliance. Those who complete all components of the program will be eligible to apply for RYT (Registered Yoga Teacher) status at the 200 Hour level. “The great thing about the teacher training program is that it encompasses the physical, mental and spiritual,” explains Thompson. “We can be more authentic to what yoga is meant to be.” She says that most classes have two teachers, which allows for a greater perspective and different experiences. “The nature of yoga tends to be a personal journey, one of self examination and self discovery. Although the foundation of the program is physical, having a new, clearer sense of self is perhaps the most important part of the program; the most meaningful.” Thompson notes that many of The Yoga Loft’s

classes are for physical wellness. “We want people to be able to take a beginner yoga class and feel better—to have better posture and feel good physically and emotionally. If yoga is only a physical practice to you, then that’s okay. Yoga simply makes life better no matter what your level.” Since opening, Thompson says her own vision has shifted. In the beginning, she was very ambitious and determined to create a grand yoga institute that was more about her success. Now, that vision has changed significantly. “I’m not driven by goals and ambition, but by the people walking through the door. What do they need? What types of classes would help serve their needs? How can yoga make a difference? That’s what drives me now.” The Yoga Loft is located at 521 East 4th Street, 3rd floor in Bethlehem. The next teacher training program will be held September 2011 through May 2012. For more information or to register, call 610-867-YOGA (9642) or visit TheYogaLoftofBethlehem.com.

Baptiste yoga focuses on what creates results for people on the physical, mental and emotional levels, so that they can feel more empowered and at ease in their everyday lives. I developed this style of power yoga over many years of working with men, women and youths. It adapts to an individual’s level of ability and encourages students to integrate universal timeless and spiritual principles into their daily lives.

Yoga is an anchor in my life. It’s hard to imagine what life would be like without yoga. Physically, it’s always been there for me from childhood. In my teens and early 20s, I surfed and participated in martial arts competitions. Yoga not only gave me a background for all the sports I participated in, it provided a platform for my athletic training and helped heal and rebuild my body after injuries. In my 30s, and now my 40s, yoga has been my pillar as I enter new phases of life. In challenging times, yoga has been like a friend that helped me work through stress and emotions. It’s a tool that continues to help me find peace and freedom, as well as personal power.

an anchor for the mind. For example, when an individual who lives largely in their head is asked to connect with their breath, foot or leg while holding a yoga pose, they immediately come into the present moment. This is a strong tool to take off the mat and into everyday life. When we take the time to connect again and again throughout the day to our breath or to our body, we are drawn away from the mental concepts and

The true effectiveness of yoga shows when we take our practice into life situations. I have three sons, ages 17, 14 and 10. Teenagers communicate on a different level because they are trying to make their own way in the world and find their sense of self; I now find myself interacting with my two older sons on a new level. When they were younger, I called the shots, but now they want to do that, which results in a back-and-forth dance of communication. When I am practicing yoga, I find that instead of reacting to their challenges from a position of control, I am centered, calm and less reactive. Rather than giving them something to rebel against, I am able to respond more consciously. Overall, when I am centered and grounded in my body and breathing, I’m

not in my head, intellectualizing about what is happening. Rather, I’m connected with my heart center. Immediately, my perception shifts from thoughts of the past or future into the present, which is the best place to be, because I’m with “what is, as is,” and I can respond from a place of compassion. I like that I feel more complete when I’m engaged with my children. What advice do you give someone who wants to begin a yoga practice? An all-day immersion experience is a great way to start. Then, practicing yoga daily for at least 20 to 30 minutes is better than practicing for one hour three times a week A regular yoga practice has cumulative results: The body changes and becomes stronger, deals better with stress and benefits from enhanced energy flows; practitioners enjoy an overall feeling of well-being and a sense of ease within their own body. Yoga Tools That Help At-Risk Youth Help Themselves

I

n community-based organizations and juvenile detention centers around the U.S., yoga and meditation have been introduced to youth to explore the possibilities of increasing fitness and self-awareness. Shanthi Project began as a pilot research program at Northampton County Juvenile Justice Center in spring of 2010. The program is designed to foster self-understanding in at-risk and incarcerated youth and underserved communities in the Lehigh Valley. Named for the Sanskrit word for “peace,” Shanthi Project’s mission is to inspire students to practice yoga and meditation for enhanced fitness and to develop a mindful approach toward their lives and the roles that they play in their communities. Twice weekly yoga and meditation classes were held for 4 weeks with a group of incarcerated boys aged 15 through 18 years old. Through directed breathing techniques, yoga postures, and sitting in stillness with one-pointed focus (medita-

“It helps me with my anger.” “It helps me relax.” “I need to be at peace.” Comments about Shanthi Project yoga & meditation from male inmates, age 16 through 18, at Northampton County Juvenile Justice tion), participants learned to cope with stress, gain greater control of emotions including anger, and improve impulse control. Data that was gathered from self-assessment questionnaires throughout this time, as well as impressions from counselors and staff, showed statistical significance in a positive direction for 8 of 10 parameters measuring stress, anger, negative thoughts, reflection before action, peacefulness, and hope for the future. “As with all yoga, these programs are based on the understanding that a healthy relationship between the mind and body becomes an important tool to navigate through daily life,” says clinical research scientist, yoga teacher, and founder of Shanthi Project, Denise Veres. “The practice of yoga and meditation cultivates the ability to stop and reflect on a thought or emotion before taking action.” “The twelve boys in the pilot study, ages 15 through 18, initially greeted me with varying degrees of resistance, skepticism and, luckily, some curiosity,” ads Veres. “After my very first boys’ class at juvenile detention, one kid looked at me and said “This is whack, Miss.” But, the same boy was throwing around the word “equanimity” and was leading sun salutations two weeks later. There were initial challenges with semantics. One boy who, when I asked the class to close their eyes and watch their breath, commented (with one eye opened) “Miss, I can’t even watch my breath with my eyes open.” Three months later, this boy was sitting in meditation for 20-minute sessions.” Currently, Shanthi Project holds 6 classes a week including a boys and a girls class in juvenile detention, a men’s and women’s class in Northampton County Prison, a class for Boys & Girls Club of Easton, and a class for teen residents of Children’s Home of Easton. With the support of local yoga teachers and yoga studios, Veres hopes to continue to blend yoga & meditation with research to help understand what approaches can help at-risk youths and be repeated and built upon. If you’d like to contribute to help Shanthi Project fulfill their mission, please feel free to make a donation during the month of September at a local yoga studio, visit ShanthiProject.org or call 610-737-8006. natural awakenings
