Peter Tom CBE
CHAIRMAN Opening words from the Chairman of the Leicester Tigers. At last, today is the day when we finally welcome our supporters to the stadium again after 15 months of playing behind closed doors here. Even to get to this point of hosting a reduced capacity crowd has taken a huge effort from everyone at the club. None of it would have been possible either without the incredible backing of our club partners, sponsors, season ticket holders and all of our supporters in these unique times. It is wonderful to be able to welcome you inside Mattioli Woods Welford Road again, while also looking forward to the day when everyone who is still following the team from further afield can join you too. There have been numerous changes on and off the field during the last year while the club has also had to deal with the significant and serious challenges of operating throughout the pandemic. But, as we take this first step towards welcoming a full house here in support of the team, I would like to thank you all for the part you have played so far. Although this is our first home game with a crowd since February 2020, many of you will have attended our games at Twickenham and at Worcester over the last two weeks and the team are very grateful for your support. Like all supporters, the players’ families and friends have also been unable to watch in person during the last year and it was wonderful for the squad to be able to see and hear them back in the stands. We welcome them all this afternoon knowing that they, too, have played a part in getting those players to where they are today and acknowledging how much of a role their support plays. To lose to a single point in a Cup Final at Twickenham on the back of a lot of hard work to get there was obviously disappointing, especially as Steve and the players could point to moments
in the game where the outcome could have been different. It was very pleasing, therefore, to see the team bounce back and close-out victory at Worcester, especially when our tries came at the end of the stadium where most of our supporters were sat. Today we welcome league leaders Bristol Bears for our final home game of the season and I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the coaches, players and staff for their hard work throughout this season.
It was important to fight back at Worcester
I would also like to thank all of the players who will move on this summer and thank them for their service to the club while wishing them well for the future. This is, of course, not the final rugby of the season here as we are honoured to host both an England ‘A’ fixture at the end of the month and the Varsity Matches on July 4 before we gather again for the new season. I’m sure we’ll also see many of you at Wasps next Saturday for the last game of the league season and hope to welcome many more of you when we kick off again in September. Thank you for all of your continued support.

Head coach Steve Borthwick
FROM THE TOUCHLINE This club has a very passionate support. When you walk down the steps as a player, the roar cheering the team out is tremendous. We’ve been privileged to be able to do what we do when other people couldn’t do their normal things, but I am delighted that supporters are back. We’ve known the supporters have been there with us, though we’ve not been able to hear them or see them in the stadium, and I am delighted they are able now to get into the ground and see the team.

Tigers were beaten by a single point as Montpellier lifted the silverware at Twickenham. After a day of heavy rain and strong winds, conditions had improved for kick-off with the crowd enjoying a chance at last to attend live sport. Montpellier were warned about their indiscipline early on after a series of penalties, before George Ford opened the scoring with a 25-metre kick on eight minutes. The lead lasted just a few minutes as Vincent Rattez kicked down the touchline in the left-hand corner and just got a hand to the ball ahead of Matias Moroni as it bounced wickedly on the tryline. Benoit Paillauge added the conversion and then a penalty for a 10-3 advantage. Tigers lost Guy Porter and Cyle Brink to injury in the opening half-hour but levelled the scores when more pressure ended with a yellow card for Alexandre Becognee and, after a 20-metre lineout drive, Harry Wells reached over the pile of bodies to score and Ford converted. Nemani Nadolo almost added another at the start of the second half as he dived into the corner but, when

Two tries from Ellis Genge helped Tigers to victory and a home-and-away seasonal double against Worcester Warriors. Tigers conceded tries at each end of the first half to trail 14-6 at the break before hitting back. The opening score of the day came from Worcester fullback Freddie Shillcock wide on the right and, although Zack Henry landed two penalties to cut the gap to a point, Ted Hill then forced his way over after breaking two tackles in front of the posts. Warriors added a penalty to that advantage early in the second half before Genge twice forced his way over the tryline from close range. First, after hooker Niall Annett had been sin-binned in defending at a maul close to his own line, the Tigers prop took a tap penalty and barged over with the support from his colleagues. Henry’s conversion came back off the top of the post with the score at 17-11. Then when another lineout drive was stopped illegally, Tigers issued instant punishment as Genge made the final push from a maul on the left and Henry’s

LEICESTER TIGERS v BRISTOL BEARS
THE BIG MATCH
Tigers host Bristol Bears in more Gallagher Premiership action... After wins over Harlequins and Worcester in the last two games, Tigers chase a Gallagher Premiership hat-trick for the first time in three years in the competition. The team’s only home defeat in any tournament since the end of January was 18-23 against Northampton. Top-of-the-table Bristol Bears have lost just twice in the Gallagher Premiership since Round 8, with both of those coming in their last four matches, at home to Exeter Chiefs and away to Sale Sharks, also both semifinalists this season, in recent weeks. The Bears have not lost successive away matches in Premiership Rugby since January 2020 and have lost only once to the Tigers in their last five fixtures - in January last year when Sam Harrison made his final appearance for the home team. Bristol have beaten Tigers just once at this venue in Premiership Rugby, 23-20 in April 2019, when Jordan Olowofela scored the only try for the home side and George Ford added five penalties. Bears duo Harry Thacker and Dan Thomas scored tries in that game and also in their 40-3 victory at the same venue last September. Referee this afternoon is Ian Tempest in his 89th Premiership fixture in charge.
FROM BOTH SIDES Born in Birmingham, back-rower Martin Corry made his senior rugby breakthrough at Newcastle Gosforth after attending university in the North East and he then moved to Bristol, captaining the team during 1997. After joining Leicester that year, Corry became an integral part of the club’s success, starting both Heineken Cup Final victories and claiming six Premiership titles. He captained the club after Martin Johnson’s retirement and also led England and starred with the Lions.

Sharks have lost just once in the last 10 rounds and booked a semi-final spot for the first time since 2006 with victory over Bristol last week. Sale have also won their last six home games.
Premiership Rugby confirmed on Tuesday that the West Country derby has been called off. After a report of Covid-19 symptoms on Sunday, Gloucester stopped all team training and the playing department were directed to self-isolate.
Newcastle suffered their second-biggest Premiership defeat last Sunday in losing 74-3 at Exeter. They have, though, won the last two home games and chase three in a row for the first time in three years.
London Irish have lost their last five games since the end of March. They have lost their last two home games but have not suffered three defeats in a row since a spell at The Stoop last season.
Northampton bounced back from successive defeats with a 30-25 win over Wasps last Saturday and aim for successive home victories for the first time since December 2019 on Sunday.
Warriors have lost their last 10 matches since a declared victory over Newcastle in February, but have picked up a losing bonus point in three of their last four.
Wasps have won just once on the road since February, though the away team has won in four of the last five Premiership meetings between these clubs and Irish have not managed a home win over Wasps since February 2013.
Chiefs achieved their biggest ever Premiership victory last Sunday and have lost just once in the league since February. They became only the fifth side, and the first since 1999, to score a dozen tries in a Premiership match in the Round 20 win over Newcastle.
Harlequins have booked a place in the play-offs for the first time in seven years and have lost just once in their last five league games - at Leicester last month. They have, though, won only one of the last five away. Quins beat Sale 24-12 in Round 10 and are chasing a double over the Sharks for the first time since 2013-14.
In consultation with Public Health England, a round of testing returned a number of positive tests, including players and staff.
The Warriors' only away win in Premiership Rugby since November 2019 was at London Irish in Round 20 last season. Their most recent victory at Kingston Park was by a single point in March 2016.
Under the Premiership Rugby regulations, the match was cancelled and a panel will be convened to determine the allocation of points.

LEICESTER TIGERS v BRISTOL BEARS
SUMMER LOVIN'
Far from being the final action of the season at Mattioli Woods Welford Road, today kickstarts a run of big games at the stadium... Today we can share in the season’s final home appearance of the league season as the relaxation of Covid measures finally allow some of our supporters to join the action, just in time ahead of some more big days this summer. The rugby calendar has been reshaped by the impact of the pandemic, with a new look to the schedule over each of the last two seasons, but it has also produced an opportunity for this iconic stadium to act as host for major fixtures in June and July. On Sunday June 25, Mattioli Woods Welford Road hosts its first international fixture since February 2008, when England A face Scotland A in the summer’s opening fixture for each team and a week later we welcome the historic Varsity Matches featuring women’s and men’s teams from the universities of Cambridge and Oxford.
The home nations have chosen to stay within these shores for their summer fixtures, with national coach Eddie Jones planning for England’s Tests with USA and Canada, as well as the ‘A’ fixture versus the country’s oldest rugby rivals. Tigers duo Matt Scott and Cameron Henderson this week learned of their selection in Scotland's summer squad led by coach Mike Blair in the absence of Gregor Townsend who is on Lions duty in South Africa. There are numerous members of the Tigers squad pushing their claims for inclusion in England’s plans for the summer too. On the last occasion that Tigers hosted an England fixture, it was Tigers forward Jordan Crane - now a coach at today’s visitors Bristol Bears - who captained the Saxons to a 31-13 victory over visitors Ireland A.
LEICESTER TIGERS v BRISTOL BEARS
His club colleagues Tom Varndell and Ollie Smith were also selected, alongside a number of players with Tigers links before or after including Anthony Allen, Will Skinner, James Grindal, George Skivington, Ryan Lamb and Ben Woods. There were other members of the England squad who used the platform to launch their senior international careers, with hooker Dylan Hartley among the replacements as he made his way towards the England captaincy and more than 90 Test caps, and Mike Brown of Harlequins who had already won the first of his 72 senior caps. The list of players who had starred in previous ‘A’ games at the Tigers stadium dating back to the 1980s reads like a ‘Who’s Who’ of international rugby including names like Richard Hill, Lawrence Dallaglio, Simon Shaw, Victor Ubogu, Ben Clarke, Jeremy Guscott, Matt Dawson, Dean Ryan and Will Greenwood. Tigers favourites Neil Back, John Wells, Richard Cockerill, George Chuter, Tim Buttimore, Barry Evans and Tony Underwood have also worn the red rose for fixtures at this stadium. Former Tigers, England and Lions wing Underwood also has experience of playing in the
Varsity Matches, which this year move to Tigers after a century at Twickenham. Mattioli Woods Welford Road becomes only the eighth venue in 149 years of rivalry for matches which have traditionally been seen as the biggest amateur fixture in world rugby. Sunday, July 4 is the date for this year’s meetings, with the women’s fixture - introduced in 1988 - kicking off at 1.30pm and the men’s game to follow at 3.30pm. The Varsity clash originally alternated between the two teams’ home grounds at The Parks in Oxford and Parker’s Piece in Cambridge dating back to 1873 before moves to The Oval, two venues in Blackheath and Queen’s Club before the annual ‘Battle of the Blues’ moved to Twickenham in 1921. After 93 meetings at the national stadium over the last 100 years, now Tigers are honoured to be able to act as host. Tickets for England A versus Scotland A and the Varsity Matches are available now from the Tigers ticket office. Contact the sales team at the club for details of matchday hospitality packages. We look forward to seeing you.

Andrea Pinchen
FROM THE BOARDROOM
Steve is driving improvement on the field
Tigers chief executive officer Andrea Pinchen reflects on her first full season in the role. A lot has changed here since my first day on the job as CEO at the club. Over the past year, since the outbreak of Covid-19, the club has been on a journey, not just for success, but simply to survive. Some of my first tasks in the role were some of the hardest I’ve ever faced in my career, including financial challenges, the safety of employees and wellpublicised pay cuts, as well as a redundancy process. All of those tough decisions were made with two clear objectives: Ensuring the survival of the Club and working towards success on the pitch. The first has been achieved and I believe we have made huge steps forward on the second.
The drive and clarity introduced by Steve Borthwick and his team have bred results on the pitch, including our first visit to a Twickenham final since 2013. We’re by no means the finished article yet, but these are positive steps in the right direction. Today, we can finally welcome you back to Mattioli Woods Welford Road - something we have been unable to do since February 2020. We’ve missed your cheers and your passion in the stands and, although we are at a much reduced capacity this afternoon, I know the cheer when Tom Youngs leads the team out to Smoke On The Water will be deafening - I cannot wait!
As the season comes to a close, I hope you too share my positivity at the position of the club and can see the steps we’ve made. There’s still plenty to do on and off the pitch ahead of what we all hope will be a new season of normality, with a full 25,000plus supporters in full voice in the stadium as we welcome the 2021-22 campaign. On a personal note, I simply want to thank each and every one of you for your continued and unwavering support through these unprecedented times. This pandemic has affected us all to a greater or lesser extent, and to celebrate the easing of restrictions and a return to live sport with you this afternoon will be a very special moment indeed.

FOUNDATION NEWS
THANK YOU FROM THE TIGERS FOUNDATION
The support of Tigers fans for the Leicester Tigers Foundation since the outbreak of the pandemic over a year ago has played a key role in contributing to its on-going work. A huge thanks to those who have donated, supported and got involved wherever possible over the last 12 months. We look forward to seeing more of you in the future when we can spend more time at our work in the community. The Foundation auction has been a popular way to show
support and offered two unique items for supporters to own in the build-up to the European Challenge Cup Final. First up was an official European Challenge Cup matchball signed by fly-half George Ford following the semi-final victory over Ulster at Mattioli Woods Welford Road. The second item was a unique Man of the Match medal which was prepared for presentation at the Leicester Tigers versus Castres Olympique fixture last season, before the match
was cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Auction of the items totalled more than £400 towards the Foundation’s work in educational special needs and also with the Tigers Wheelchair Rugby Team. We hope to have some other interesting items available for auction in coming months, so keep an eye out for updates on the club website as well as more news on the Foundation Monument project over the summer.

FOUNDATION Update from one of the club’s official charities...
THE GET BUSY LIVING PODCAST
100 STEPS TO MARK 100 WEEKS Foundation beneficiary Liv was injured in 2019 and paralysed from the waist down. Since her injury, she has adopted Hambo’s attitude and has worked really hard on her recovery. June 17 will mark 100 weeks of Liv’s recovery and, to commemorate this, she has challenged herself to walk 100 steps in the Get Busy Living Centre gym with her physios. Liv wants to give something back to the Foundation after the help she received following her injury and has set up a fundraising page so if you can spare a few pennies, she’d love your support. Look for Olivia Langley on JustGiving.
Matt has become such an expert at podcasts by now that we’ve decided to launch our own pilot episode of ‘The Get Busy Living Podcast’ which will be out soon. This pilot featured Matt alongside guests Jim Hamilton, a Foundation ambassador and former player with Tigers, Saracens and Scotland; beneficiary Sophie Wilson; and Harry Potter star James Phelps to discuss what ‘get busy living’ means to them. You can expect inspirational stories of triumph over adversity, an insight into why the little things are so important to recovery after a lifechanging injury and whether James did or didn’t buy his 2.9million Instagram followers!

A big welcome from Welford and everyone at the Tigers to Sienna Wardle who is today’s virtual matchday mascot. Although supporters return to the stadium this afternoon, to keep everyone safe, they are not allowed to get on to the pitch but we know that Sienna and all of our Junior Tigers will be right behind the team from wherever they follow the game this afternoon and we do look forward to seeing you back at the stadium soon! A draw is held to find our virtual mascot for each home game among purchasers of Junior Tigers Club membership. Junior membership is £35 and includes free bobble hat and goodie bag.

COMMUNITY TEAM SUPPORTING TIGERS’ COMMUNITY PROGRAMME
LAND ROVER PREMIERSHIP RUGBY CUP The Leicester Tigers leg of the Land Rover Premiership Rugby Cup has been confirmed for Sunday, June 13 and there are still places left for club teams of under-11s and under-12s players to sign up. This event will be hosted at the club’s community partner Brooksby Melton College, home of the Tigers’ ACE and Development 16+ Rugby Programme. The facilities and pitches at Brooksby have been developed over the last few years and will provide a great environment for teams in this free-toenter event run by Premiership clubs throughout the country. The return of the Land Rover Premiership Rugby Cup is a huge boost for grassroots rugby as clubs are able to open their doors again and this year will follow the ‘two touch rugby’ format with teams of 10 from squads of 15 maximum. This is one of the longest-standing national series of rugby festivals for age-group rugby and is always a prominent date in the season for clubs to get involved. It cannot be underestimated how important these grassroots rugby events are for rugby in the UK as young players learn vital lessons from taking part which will serve them well on and off the pitch. More than 100,000 youngsters have taken part in the Land Rover Premiership Rugby Cup so far, including a number who have gone on to play for Premiership Rugby clubs. This shows the pathway youngsters can take on their journey thanks to Land Rover’s support of grassroots rugby. Land Rover is proud to be the official vehicle of Premiership Rugby, a partnership which stretches back to 2002. In the UK, Land Rover has been supporting rugby at all levels, from grassroots to the elite, for nearly two decades. Lewis Moody, Land Rover ambassador and former Tigers back-rower, said: “The return of the Land
Rover Premiership Rugby Cup across the country is a huge boost for grassroots rugby. It is one of the longest-standing national series of rugby festivals for under-11s and under-12s, and is always a date in the season that clubs look forward to.” The Land Rover Premiership Rugby Cup is a key part of the rugby calendar and allows Land Rover to connect with the rugby community and the people at the heart of it.
Land Rover recognises this area of the game is essential for the continued growth of rugby and plays an important role in local communities. Places for the Leicester Tigers event are limited, but for more information or to book your under-11s or under-12s spot please email communityevents@tigers.co.uk. The Land Rover Premiership Rugby Cup is testament to Land Rover’s commitment to supporting rugby at all levels, from grassroots to elite. Follow @LandRoverRugby to discover more. #DiscoverRugby

Ben Kay (65) and Dan Cole on 63. Youngs played his first European game in the Heineken Cup in 2007-08 and also has 11 tries in European rugby. He has now made 262 firstteam appearances for the club, dating back to February 2007. Club historian Stuart Farmer also notes that Ben’s outing in the game against Northampton Saints in April was his 25th Premiership appearance against Tigers’ derby rivals, equalling a league record against one opposition held jointly by former Wasps lock Simon Shaw (versus Leicester) and Harlequins duo Mike Brown and Chris Robshaw (versus Saracens). Stuart reports that in terms of first-team appearances for Tigers versus Saints, going back to the club’s formation in 1880, Youngs is now equal third, level with Neil Back on 25 games. Graham Rowntree (26) and Sid Penny (27) are the only Tigers players with more appearances in the derby. Youngs has also scored five of his 38 tries for the club against Northampton.

Who are your Players of the Year? The shortlist for the Leicester Tigers Supporters’ Players of the Year has been finalised and voting is now open. Although there is no annual Awards Night due to the timing of relaxation in restrictions on social gatherings, supporters still have an opportunity to identify their top performers. In acknowledgement of the changes made to the format of the season and to the playing squad caused by the suspension period in mid-2020, the awards will recognise performances
from the restart phase last summer right through to the climax of the 2020-21 season. See the Tigers website and social media now for the shortlist of names for Player of the Year, Young Player and Newcomer, and how you can place your vote. Winners will be announced next week. The Try of the Year will be selected from the list of Topps Tiles Try-Umph of the Month winners, with voting for the May award open now on the club website.
