Peter Tom CBE

CHAIRMAN Opening words from the Chairman of the Leicester Tigers. Welcome to matchday with the Leicester Tigers, from wherever you are following today’s game, whether that is with BT Sport, BBC Radio Leicester, the Tigers’ Matchday Live service or other avenues. And a warm welcome to the officials and players of our oldest rivals Northampton Saints. These games are always special, though it is a real pity that we cannot share this one with the supporters from both teams inside Mattioli Woods Welford Road stadium. The good news is that we are finally approaching the time when restrictions are lifted and we can start welcoming back supporters, and there is a lot of work being done behind the scenes to be prepared for that moment so we can enjoy matchdays together again. Within the roadmap out of Covid as it stands, we hope to have some of you here for the game against Bristol on June 5. This is the fourth in a sequence of very important games, with knockout fixtures against Connacht and Newcastle followed by another big rivalry and the trip to Bath last week. From here, we go into a European Challenge Cup semi-final against Ulster so there will be no let-up in intensity on the pitch. One of the features of the team’s recent good form has been the way different players have come into the squad and performed so well. The internationals, of course, have been away for a decent-sized chunk of the season and there are always the bumps and bruises to cope with along the way, but Steve has increased the competition within the squad and that is having its results in the kind of performances we have seen from players like Dan Kelly, Harry Potter, Guy Porter, Johnny McPhillips, Cameron Henderson and others who have earned an opportunity and then taken it with both hands. That strength in depth and that regular competition for places can only be a benefit in the long run.

There are still a lot of points to play for in the league programme and, as Steve has consistently said, we are looking to build from week to week and keep taking steps forward in the development of the players, the gameplan and the level of the team’s performance. Derby Day with Saints is usually the Matt Hampson Foundation Day here and, although those plans have been hit this year, I would like to congratulate Matt and everyone at his organisation on the work they do for those who have suffered serious injury and hope we can host you all again soon.

Depth in the squad is growing

On behalf of the Tigers, I also send congratulations to our friends at Leicester City who have reached a first FA Cup Final in more than 50 years and wish them all the very best for the big day at Wembley Stadium next month. Finally, as always, I pass on my thanks to all of the Tigers supporters who have stuck with us through these challenging times and who have shown great loyalty to the club. Steve and the players are very eager to have you back in the stands and thank you for your continued support as we all appreciate everything you do for the Tigers.

LEICESTER TIGERS v NORTHAMPTON SAINTS

Head coach Steve Borthwick

FROM THE TOUCHLINE “The way the players have approached every challenge has been excellent. It has been a tough period for everybody and we are privileged to be able to continue to do what we do, to come in each day and work hard and play our game when other people don’t have that. We feel privileged and the players are trying to maximise that privileged time they have.”

CLUB NEWS answered there, you can contact the Tigers ticket office via email tickets@tigers.co.uk or phone 0116 319 8888 (option 2).

Academy

Match ticket ballot Tigers can now confirm details of plans for a match ticket ballot for the return of supporters to Mattioli Woods Welford Road. Current government guidelines indicate that Tigers will be able to welcome a reduced crowd for the final home game of the regular season, against Bristol Bears on Saturday, June 5 (3.00pm) in line with the proposed easing of Covid restrictions. An email has been sent to all 2020-21 season ticket holders containing step-by-step instructions on how and when to join the ballot and how to apply as a social bubble of up to six family or friends (who must all be 2020-21 season ticket holders). Tickets for this fixture will all be sold at a flat rate of £15, with the option to make a donation to support the club’s work in the community. Check your email In Box now (and Junk Mail just in case) to see how you can join this process. You will need your Tigers Reference Number (TRN) which is printed on your season ticket card. If you are applying on behalf of others in your social

bubble who are also season ticket holders, you will also need each of their TRNs before you can proceed. Note that due to restrictions within the stadium, places will be allocated where available and your regular season ticket places cannot be guaranteed. All ballot applications must be made before midnight on Monday, May 3. Successful applicants will be notified via email and text message (to the lead booker only if the application is for multiple season ticket holders) and they will have 72 hours to complete the purchase of their tickets from that point. The club requests that supporters enter the ballot only if you are certain you can attend to ensure as many season ticket holders as possible can share in this opportunity to join a us on matchday. This ballot is for the Tigers versus Bristol Bears fixture as the only game open to supporters at this point. Check out your email now – there is also a Frequently Asked Questions page on the club website. If your question is not

The Tigers Academy team will take part in a revised campaign with their opening fixture next weekend. Without a competitive match since February 2020, when the Academy completed a third Premiership Rugby Under-18 League title, Tigers kick off a month-long mini-season against Gloucester next Saturday. Unfortunately, fixtures at this stage remain closed to supporters. Look out for updates on the club website.

Shop open The Club Shop at the stadium is now open to visitors and for click-andcollect orders. With the easing of Covid restrictions, the shop has re-opened in the Robin Hood Stand, stocking replica kit, training and leisure wear, the Captains Collection and souvenirs so there is plenty of choice to check out. Social distancing measures are in place and face coverings must be worn at all times. Shop hours are 10.00am-4.00pm MondaySaturday (closed on Sundays and home matchdays). Parking is available in the Crumbie Car Park, with access from Aylestone Road. Online services remain available all day, every day with the option to collect your order from the stadium shop.

euro news

Mattioli Woods Welford Road hosts another big evening of European club rugby next Friday when Ulster Rugby are the visitors in the semi-finals of the Challenge Cup. Tournament organisers announced a revised format for the knockout rounds after the cancellation of the preliminary stages at the halfway point in both club tournaments, but now it comes down to a straight showdown for a place in the Final next month. After beating French duo Brive and Bayonne away in the opening two fixtures, Tigers were guaranteed a home draw in the Round of 16 and overcame Connacht there, before beating Newcastle Falcons in the quarter-finals two weeks ago. After today’s Gallagher Premiership fixture with Northampton Saints, Steve Borthwick’s squad will begin preparations for the club’s ninth European semi-final and a second successive appearance at this stage in the Challenge Cup after meeting Toulon there during 2019-20. Ulster, of course, have been regular rivals in the Heineken Champions Cup and, like Tigers, are previous European champions.

They started the season in the Champions Cup before entering the Challenge Cup knockout rounds and recorded back-to-back away wins over Gallagher Premiership clubs Harlequins and then Northampton Saints to earn the match-up with Leicester. The winners will meet either Bath Rugby or Montpellier - who meet next Saturday in the other semi-final - in the Final with the venue to be confirmed. Tigers versus Ulster is an 8.00pm kick-off next Friday and French official Pascal Gauzère has been appointed as referee. There is live coverage with BT Sport or you can keep up to date with the Tigers’ Matchday Live and social media pages. LEICESTER TIGERS v NORTHAMPTON SAINTS

THE BIG MATCH Tigers host Northampton Saints in more Gallagher Premiership action...

Leicester Tigers have won their last six home games in all competitions - their best run at Mattioli Woods Welford Road since 2016. The team’s last 10 Gallagher Premiership matches have been evenly split with five wins and five defeats, most recently going down to a last-minute converted score at Bath last weekend to slip from seventh to eighth in the table. Northampton’s only defeat in the last four rounds was at home to Bristol on March 11. The Saints have scored 15 tries and conceded six in their last two matches in the competition. Northampton have lost just once away from home in any competition this year - at Harlequins in early March. The opening meeting of the season was declared as a Tigers win when the fixture was cancelled in January due to positive results for Covid in the Saints camp, but Northampton have won on two of their last three visits to Leicester in the league. Karl Dickson, referee in Tigers’ last home game in the league, against Newcastle Falcons, is in charge again this afternoon in his 41st Premiership Rugby fixture.

FROM BOTH SIDES A graduate of the Tigers academy after initially playing at Syston RFC, Matt Cornwell made nearly 50 appearances for the club across two spells, as well as captaining England Under-21s to a Grand Slam in 2016. A centre with experience at fly-half and full-back, he joined Northampton from Exeter in 2010. He rejoined Tigers in 2012/13 after the first of two spells in Italy, and served as team manager before following Richard Cockerill to Edinburgh.

LEICESTER TIGERS v NORTHAMPTON SAINTS

ELSEWHERE IN ROUND 17 Newcastle have lost their last five league matches since victory over Harlequins in Round 11. Their most recent win on the road in Premiership Rugby was at Wasps in December.

BRISTOL BEARS v EXETER CHIEFS League leaders Bristol Bears have won their last six Gallagher Premiership matches since a draw at London Irish on February 21. Another victory would tie their best winning run in the competition, set 12 months ago. The Bears have lost just twice at Ashton Gate this season, to Clermont Auvergne in Europe and to Sale in Round 8.

Falcons beat Gloucester 22-10 at Kingston Park in Round 6 and have won on two of their last three league visits to Kingsholm.

Chiefs have the edge in previous meetings, leading by five wins to two in the Premiership, and they also beat the Bears in the Championship play-offs in 2010 to reach the top flight for the first time.

WORCESTER WARRIORS v SALE SHARKS Worcester have lost their last six league fixtures and have not won at Sixways since beating London Irish in Round 1. Sale Sharks have lost just once in the last six rounds and have lost only twice away from home in Premiership Rugby since early December. They beat Worcester 20-13 in Round 6 but have lost on their last three visits to Sixways.

The Chiefs have won on all six visits to Ashton Gate, including in the final of last season’s European Champions Cup.

LONDON IRISH v HARLEQUINS

WASPS v BATH RUGBY

London Irish’s last five league matches have all gone the way of the home team. Their only defeat at Brentford was against Sale in December. Harlequins have not won away in the Gallagher Premiership since a trip to Bath in Round 8. Their last four away games against Irish have been at four different venues - Twickenham, Madejski Stadium, the Stoop and now Brentford Community Stadium.

Wasps' only two victories in the last 10 rounds were both away from home, at Worcester in February and at Newcastle in March. Their most recent victory at the Ricoh Arena was on January 2. Bath’s only defeat in their last six games was 33-36 at London Irish in Round 15 and they have won three of their last four away games in the tournament. Their record at the Ricoh is won three, lost three, drawn one.

GLOUCESTER RUGBY v NEWCASTLE FALCONS Gloucester have won just one of their last four league games and two of their previous seven home games in Premiership Rugby.

Tigers booked a place in the semi-finals of the European Challenge Cup for a second successive year with a convincing victory over Newcastle Falcons, which featured two tries from Harry Potter and two penalty tries. Potter provided the opening score when he read a kick in behind the Falcons defence from Johnny McPhillips and then the forwards added a penalty try from a maul which was pulled down as it reached the tryline. Falcons lost skipper Mark Wilson to the sin-bin for his part in that incident but a score from George Wacokecoke brought the game back to 15-8 as halftime approached. Matias Moroni then supplied a third try for Tigers, but Falcons replied to keep it tight entering the final quarter until a penalty from replacement fly-half George Ford finally provided a 10-point buffer. A second penalty try from a maul followed, as did two more yellow cards including a second for prop Kyle Cooper who had just returned to the field to provide a full compliment of front-rowers. Potter then capitalised on space out wide

to score his second as Tigers moved into the last four of the competition. NOTEBOOK… 100th Tigers appearance for George Ford… Four yellow cards for Falcons including two to prop Kyle Cooper… Uncontested scrums in the closing stages after yellow cards to Cooper and Tampin… Kick-off followed a

A last-gasp converted try denied Tigers victory at The Recreation Ground. Leading by 10 points entering the final quarter, Tigers then conceded a score from Miles Reid to set up a big finale and Bath finally claimed the match when Ben Spencer added a touchline conversion, following Will Muir’s second try of a bright and sunny afternoon in the West Country. George Ford had kicked three penalties to put Tigers into a 9-7 half-time lead despite Muir’s opening score and Matias Moroni provided his second try

in successive games to get the second half off to a good start. Kini Murimurivalu, Dan Kelly and Jasper Wiese produced important tackles to close out dangerous attacks from Bath as Tigers led by 10, with another Ford penalty approaching the 60-minute mark. But then Reid got over from close range and, finally, a penalty on halfway gave Bath position to go for the decisive score, keeping ball in the forwards to eventually find Muir on the left and give scrum-half Spencer the chance to kick the winning points.

COMMUNITY TEAM SUPPORTING TIGERS’ COMMUNITY PROGRAMME

Tigers rugby development officers have been supporting rugby sessions at schools across the city, including The Winstanley Community College in Braunstone. This secondary school is located less than five miles away from the famous home of Leicester Tigers and, with the offer of support in and around schools led by the club, our community coaches will continue to run a number of sessions for young people. The school’s Head of PE, Kevin Higgins, shared just how the club is helping them to keep kids active and help to promote the sport, which is a part of Premiership Rugby’s Gallagher Project Rugby campaign. “I worked with Scott Clarke and his team at the club a while back, so I was keen to get back involved when we received the invite to get our students involved in Project Rugby,” he said. “Rugby isn’t our primary sport, but actually we’re seeing that a lot of our kids are enjoying trying something new and that is only helped by the presence of the Tigers coaches who come along

to lead the sessions. The coaching is about fun and learning the basics, as well as playing games that the kids enjoy. They also enjoy it when we look to develop those skills, bringing in things like tackle bags and other equipment, although that is obviously limited at this time. “The great thing about rugby is that it is for everyone and, especially when Tigers are just up the road, we’re keen to help to inspire the kids to get involved and take the game further at a club level.” Tigers are delivering Gallagher Project Rugby as part of a national initiative designed to get young people playing and enjoying the game. It works to introduce rugby to girls and boys from a variety of backgrounds and supports them with professional coaching from Tigers to get involved and have fun, learn how to play and take the game up at their local club too. If you’d like to find out more about how the club’s Gallagher Project Rugby programme can support your students, please get in touch by emailing scott.clarke@tigers.co.uk

LEICESTER TIGERS v NORTHAMPTON SAINTS

Andrea Pinchen

FROM THE BOARDROOM Tigers chief executive officer Andrea Pinchen reflects on this weekend’s derby behind closed doors and the prospect of fans returning soon. I say it every year, but there’s no game like Tigers versus Saints for me. The history of this match at Mattioli Woods Welford Road speaks volumes - just ask any fan and they’ll tell you what it means. Bragging rights are always important in a local derby and with just 30-odd miles between the two clubs, it’s the one game we all look for in the rugby calendar as soon as the fixtures are released. That is why it is even more gutting that fans are unable to attend today’s game as part of the government’s on-going restrictions on watching live sport. Our neighbours across the road at the King Power Stadium took part in a pilot event at Wembley last weekend with a crowd of 4,000, so hopefully the learnings can be taken and we can safely move to opening our doors again too. You’ll no doubt have seen Steve Borthwick talking about the return of fans during his weekly media sessions and what that would mean to the players. Tom Youngs also spoke about missing that feeling of running out to a packed stadium, saying: “One thing we’ve not taken for granted is that we get to play and do our job, that’s a very special thing

to be able to do. We would love crowds back and we haven’t had that at the moment - you do the warm-up and you run back out waiting for that big roar and it’s not there. It takes some adjustment.”

moment for them and all of us to have you back. There’s a lot going on behind the scenes to get ready for the government’s easing of restrictions, working with our local Safety Advisory Group,

Steve, Aled and a fair few of our players have never experienced (on the right side of it) the noise of our support - including the stamping of the feet in the Breedon Stand while the guys are in the changing room - and, as Tom says, the roar when the team runs out. No one can describe that. It needs to be experienced. I believe it will be a ‘wow’

cleaning the stadium, switching everything back on again as we gear up to open the turnstiles for the Bristol game. Keep an eye on the website and in your emails if you are a current season ticket holder for more details in the coming weeks. Good luck to the lads today and thank you, each and every one of you, for your support from home.

COMMUNITY TEAM SUPPORTING TIGERS’ COMMUNITY PROGRAMME

Delivered nationally by Leicester Tigers and the Premiership Rugby clubs, the Greggs Foundation is pleased to offer primary schools across England the opportunity to take part in the Greggs Tackling Health programme. This is an interactive project for children aged seven and eight which takes a holistic approach to teaching them about their own health and wellbeing, and about leading a healthy lifestyle with a rugby focus. Greggs Tackling Health has been developed alongside Premiership Rugby’s new app known as ‘Premiership Rugby Champions’, an innovative cross-curriculum digital app developed with expert learning technology company Aspire 2Be to inspire primary school children to get moving while developing important life skills. Teachers can bring learning to life with interactive resources including tackling health, numeracy and character, with digital literacy development at the heart of the content. Developed by teachers for teachers, Premiership Rugby Champions will provide interactive, themed projectbased lesson plans and materials for the classroom and outside. The key aims of the project, which is also supported by Public Health England, are to improve young people’s understanding of

what constitutes healthy eating and a healthy diet and to increase levels of physical activity. • Current research states that one in three children is obese or overweight by the time they leave primary school • Children growing up in low income households are more than twice as likely to be obese than those in high income households • Tackling Health is running across all Premiership Rugby clubs and 30,000 young people will benefit from the programme across the next two years Kathryn Ward, PE lead at Fosse Primary School in the city, said: "After such a challenging year for our pupils, it has been great to have Leicester Tigers deliver the Greggs Tackling Health

programme at our school. In a time where regular physical activity and eating healthily has been more difficult than ever, it’s great to have the Tigers coaches in our school to promote these fundamental topics in a fun and engaging way.” After the challenges Covid has presented and the impact it continues to have on our community, Leicester Tigers are more committed than ever in our efforts to support our essential workers and are dedicated to tackling important issues such as obesity and unhealthy lifestyles, educating pupils to make healthier choices. The Tigers Community Team is looking for schools to participate in the Greggs Tackling Health programme. If you would like to particpate in this programme please email Laurence.walters@tigers.co.uk or call 07534 922582.

FOUNDATION Update from one of the club’s official charities...

FOUNDATION BENEFICIARIES RETURN With gyms opening up across the country once again, the Get Busy Living centre has been busy with beneficiaries coming back to train outdoors in the sunshine with our personal trainer, Sutty. Many of our beneficiaries have been mostly at home for months on end and it’s been fantastic to see some familiar faces and the progress they’ve made over the past few months. We’ve introduced twice-weekly lateral flow testing for staff alongside vaccines and our existing covidsecure measures, so we can safely help people get busy living again.

OFFICIAL CHARITY PARTNER OF LIONS TRUST The Matt Hampson Foundation has been named as an official charity partner of the British and Irish Lions Charitable Trust for 2021-22. The Trust exists to support Lions players in need, providing financial support for injured players and assistance to those that have fallen on hard times, alongside furthering the spirit, values and ethos of the Lions through rugby clubs and communities across England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales. Matt said: “We’re honoured to have been chosen as an official charity partner of the British and

Irish Lions Charitable Trust and excited to be working with them. “Rugby is firmly at the heart of the Matt Hampson Foundation and a number of our ambassadors have represented the Lions, so it’s fantastic to be recognised, especially in our 10th anniversary year. “We believe that this alliance will create a powerful platform to promote what we do and allow us to help more people to get busy living again." Gavin Hastings, Chairman of Trustees for the Lions Charitable Trust, said: “We are delighted to announce our four charity partnerships.

“We are proud to be partnering with four incredible charities who all have a connection with rugby at their core. We look forward to helping raise as much money as possible by highlighting the vital work they do.”

LEICESTER TIGERS v NORTHAMPTON SAINTS

Leicester Tigers and Northampton Saints have met on 245 previous occasions, making this one of the oldest rivalries in rugby. This stadium has hosted 122 of those encounters where the Tigers' record is won 85, lost 24, drawn 13. The overall score stands at 137 wins by Tigers to 89 by Saints, with 19 games drawn. Looking back through the pages of the Tigers History Book, the very first meeting was in November 1880 - in only the third game played by Leicester after the club’s formation - and produced a 0-0 draw. It was the second stalemate in the club’s first three games, following the draw in the opening game against Moseley just two weeks earlier. In a different age, with a different formation, the 15man line-up had only been standardised five years earlier and there were numerous changes of formation in the opening decade of the club’s existence, with nine forwards, two half-backs, two three-quarters and two full-backs the norm during 1880-81.

By the following season, teams moved one of the full-backs into the three-quarters before eventually finding the 8-7 balance between forwards and backs that we know today. The Leicester line-up for that first historic derby meeting: FORWARDS: Alexander Brice – Played as a halfback in the club’s first-ever fixture and returned as one of the nine forwards against Northampton while captaining the team for the first time. John Gilbert – Played in the historic opener against Moseley and returned to face Northampton. Newman Haddon – Made the first of his five club appearances in this fixture. Hedley Salmon – The second of 89 games for the club in its formative years. Fred Sheen – Faced Moseley and Northampton among nine appearances for the club. William Sheffield – The first of 98 appearances for a future club captain.

Stat Pack SOME OF THE FACTS AND FIGURES BEHIND THE HEADLINES...

James Symington – Debut for the vice-captain who went on to play 49 times for the club. Arthur Turner – Made 25 appearances, spread over the club’s first decade. Arthur Whitehead – First of 33 games for the club. HALF-BACKS: Charles Duckering – First of his three appearances in his only season with Leicester. Lawrence Young – A future captain, he was the only player involved in each of the club’s opening three fixtures, against Moseley, Leicester Victoria and then Northampton, and played more than 30 times in five seasons. THREE-QUARTERS: John Lakin – First of 27 games for the club, during which he scored six tries. George Walker – Made four more appearances after this debut game.

The first of 245 derby meetings with Northampton was back in November 1880

FULL-BACKS: Herbert Foster – The second of 50 games for the club. Sherrard Coleman – A future captain, he also played in the club’s first-ever fixture and is the only man in the derby line-up to eventually top 100 games.

APR

ON THIS DAY 1905: A 5-5 draw at Plymouth

was sandwiched by defeats by Gloucester and Bristol in a four-day spell. Eight players started all three games, with Alf Parsons scoring the tour’s only try. 1909: Tigers ended the season with a 16-0 win over Northampton with tries from George Greasley, Arthur Hobbs, Percy Lawrie and Pedlar Wood, the scrum-half who started all 41 games in the campaign. 1920: Teddy Haselmere

scored four times in a 25-6 win at Northampton which drew the season to a close. 1954: Denis Bolesworth was

carried off shoulder high as he retired after 330 club games following a final-day win over Sale. He did return for one more game a year later after a colleague pulled out due to illness.

1962: Mike Wade ran in a hattrick of tries in the 31-14 win at Exeter, which completed an unbeaten three-game tour. 1965: David Bird scored twice in a 16-3 win at Northern on Tyneside on the final day of the season. 1971: International back-

rower Rodger Arneil made his final appearance as Peter Wheeler’s penalty provided the only score in a win over Sale on the last day of the

season. Arneil was then called up as an injury replacement for the Lions tour. 1973: Two penalties from

Alan Old and a try by Bobby Barker were not enough to avoid defeat at Wilmslow the only loss in the final 12 games of the season. Chris Baynes made the last of his club appearances.

1976: Ken Bracewell scored

in his final first-team game as visitors Fylde were beaten 22-13. Jim Kempin scored the other try, with Paul Dodge and Bobby Barker sharing the kicking. 1982: Tigers lost 30-9 to

Moseley four days after a 36-32 win over Barbarians in a re-arranged fixture. 1993: The league campaign

ended with a 28-5 win over Rugby Lions, which featured tries for Rory and Tony Underwood as Tigers finished third in the table. 1996: Darren Garforth

was among the scorers in a midweek win over Gloucester as Tigers stayed in second place in the table with one game remaining.

1999: Five tries in a 41-17

win at Manchester Sale kept Tigers top of the table and within two games of a league title. Neil Back scored twice to take his total to seven in nine games.

24 2005: With talk of a possible groundshare, Leicester City hosted Tigers for the first time, but it was Toulouse who took a 27-19 victory in a European Cup semi-final in front of a 31,882 crowd. 2007: Tom and Ben

Youngs were used as backs replacements - with Ben making his league debut as a 17-year-old - in a midweek trip to Bristol. Leon Lloyd made the last of his 260 appearances as Tigers stayed second behind Gloucester who would be their Twickenham rivals three weeks later. 2010: Matt Smith and Ben Youngs were among the scorers in a win over Harlequins for top-of-thetable Tigers. 2016: Racing 92 beat Tigers

19-16 in a European Cup semi-final at Nottingham Forest despite a late try from Telusa Veainu.
