Cities Full of Symbols A Theory of Urban Space and Culture

Leiden University Press

Autumn 2011

Leiden University Press is delighted to present the new titles for Autumn 2011 and to announce two new areas of publishing: • LUP will launch two open access e-journals: The Journal of Sonic Studies on auditory culture and ScherpteDiepte/Depth of Field, a journal on photography and visual culture . • To broaden the scope of scholarly publishing, LUP has created a new imprint for the academic world: Leiden Publications. The service of this imprint offers authors and institutions the opportunity to have their academic publications professionally produced, marketed and distributed. Highlights of this catalogue are to be found in the fields of humanities, social science, law and the arts. The Bibliotheca Latinitatis Novae holds the promise for an exciting series on Neo-Latin authors including translations and research. The initial publication is on Agricola whose work was highly praised by Erasmus. Historian Henk Wesseling’s vision on Europe, seen from a perspective on developments in the Asian Pacific, is a highlight in our LUP list. Newton & the Netherlands is a wonderful addition to the history of science. LUP is also very proud to announce - in cooperation with the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam - the first exhaustive and English language handbook on Japanese Kakiemon porcelain. A new work on rural rights is added to the successful series Law, Governance and Development. The anthropologist Peter Nas will open the eyes of architects, sociologists and cityplanners alike with a ambitious book on the use of symbolism in Cities Full of Symbols. This catalogue shows LUP’s ambition to publish scholarly works of the highest quality that reach the widest audience. Please let us know your reaction to our publishing activities and become a friend on Facebook. Yvonne Twisk Publisher

H.L. Wesseling

A Cape of Asia Essays on European History A Cape of Asia collects eighteen of Wesseling’s finest essays on European history, clustered around three concerns: ‘The Wider View’, or the historical European perspective on globalization, migration and decolonization; ‘Europe’s Identity’, reflecting the shift from Eurocentrism to Americanization and Europe’s acceptance of Japan, China and India as new key players in the global economy; and European Ideas about Education, Science, and Art. The third section includes the articles ‘Johan Huizinga and the Spirit of the Nineteen Thirties’ and ‘The Expansion of Europe and the Development of Science and Technology’. A small cape of Asia was how Paul Valéry described Europe in 1919 – a pointed summary of the new mood that came over Europe in the interbellum years. Wesseling’s essays hold to the original sense of the word: personal reflections on vast subjects written for an intellectual and interested but not necessarily specialized readership.

H.L. Wesseling is professor emeritus of Contemporary History at Leiden University from 1973 to 2002, and has published extensively on European history and colonialism. From 1995 to 2002 he was Rector of the Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study (NIAS) in Wassenaar.

Newton & the Netherlands How Newton’s Ideas Entered the Continent The Dutch Republic proved to be extremely receptive to the groundbreaking ideas of Isaac Newton (1643-1727). Dutch scholars such as Willem Jacob ’s Gravesande and Petrus van Musschenbroek played a crucial role in the dissemination of Newton’s work, not only in the Netherlands but also in the rest of Europe. In the course of the eighteenth century, Newton’s ideas (in different guises and interpretations) became a true hype in Dutch society. In Newton & the Netherlands Newton’s sudden success is analyzed in great depth and put into a new perspective.

NEW E-JOURNALS AT LEIDEN UNIVERSITY PRESS

Journal of Sonic Studies

ScherpteDiepte | Depth of Field

The Journal of Sonic Studies is a biannual open access e-journal in which scholars and artists present relevant work regarding sound and the sonic environment of humans and animals. Its aim is to investigate the impact and importance of sound on and for individuals and at a general cultural level. The journal covers such subjects as the sonic design of consumer articles (cars, washing machines, coffee-makers), the influence of hearing on the relation between mother and fetus, urban noise pollution, the use of sonic weapons in war zones, interventions in public space by sound artists and the effects on customer behaviour of musak in shopping malls.

Open Access Journal on Photography and Media Culture

The Journal of Sonic Studies advocates multidisciplinary research and is open to knowledge from disparate fields of study: history, philosophy, sociology, anthropology, medical studies, architecture, legal and technical sciences, ecology, sound art, performance and media studies.

ScherpteDiepte/Depth of Field is an academic open access journal of the history and current developments of photography and media culture. ScherpteDiepte/Depth of Field considers the camera image as a medium of art and communication. In this bilingual peer-reviewed magazine, researchers publish articles from a variety of disciplines such as art history, media technology, history, communication studies and visual anthropology. While ScherpteDiepte/Depth of Field has its roots in the Netherlands and Belgium it always considers the international context. The journal seeks to bring together the development of theory concerning photography and media culture with heritage collections by collaborating with the research community, critics and curators in the field of photography and media culture along with the Netherlands Photographic Society.

De Chinese gemeenschap van Batavia, 1843-1865 Een onderzoek naar het Kong Koan-archief The Kong Koan (Chinese Council) of Batavia (present-day Jakarta) was a historical phenomenon of great significance to the local Chinese society. This institution constitutes the sole existing Chinese-language archives of a centuries-old overseas Chinese urban community. This monograph focuses on the position of the Kong Koan of Batavia, the response of the

Chinese elite to the radical changes, and the economic activities of Chinese citizens in a Dutch colony under the chairmanship of the first Chinese majoor of the city, Tan Eng Goan, between 1843-1865.

Legalising Land Rights? Yes but how? Towards Just Land Governance for Rural Development and work with local people, take their needs seriously, respect their ways of managing land, make good use of the legal system and opt for simple but robust registration systems.

‘These farmers have been working this land for generations. But they have no papers. So the government may clear this land for a project. People fear they will be chased away.’ Such stories can be heard every day in Africa, Asia and Latin America. They demonstrate the insecurity of rural smallholders who are threatened with eviction without proper compensation. The ‘project’ may be large-scale agriculture, industry, bio fuels, forest conservation, urban sprawl, or transnational landgrabbing by countries insecure in food and energy resources. Can such peasants be empowered with ‘papers’? Individual land titling has not been a ‘silver bullet’, as Hernando de Soto once suggested. So, if not private property, then what? Five legal experts who believe in adaptation to local conditions share their experiences

Peter J.M. Nas (ed.)

Cities Full of Symbols A Theory of Urban Space and Culture Cities are full of symbols that bear the meanings that together constitute urban culture. These interdisciplinary case studies, from Jogjakarta to Leiden and from Buenos Aires to New York, employ urban symbolism theory and a focus on such symbols as the city’s layout, statues, street names and popular culture. This book examines design proposals that show symbolic handling of the 9/11 attack on New York, the disaster symbolism of the ship washed ashore by the tsunami in Banda Aceh, and the design of the symbol of the city of Cape Town derived from a remnant of Dutch colonial architecture, or the mass pilgrimage to Elvis’s Graceland in Memphis. Cities Full of Symbols develops urban symbolic ecology and hypercity approaches into a new perspective on social cohesion. Approaches of architects, anthropologists, sociologists, social geographers and historians converge to make this a book for anyone interested in urban life, policymaking and city branding.

Violets between Cherry Blossoms The Diffusion of Classical Motifs to the East: Traces in Japanese Art Violets between Cherry Blossoms is a unique comparative overview of motifs and images from Greece to Japan, exploring cultural flows into the Mediterranean and the Black Sea from the earliest days, Alexander the Great, Greek culture in the Roman Empire, the Silk Road and the spread of Buddhism to China and Japan. Researcher Pieter Arts feels that the geographical expansion was part of a greater adoption and assimilation of cultures across enormous distances. The second part of the study follows the cultural flow of specific gods, heroes, airborne deities and monsters from Greece to Japan.

Renaissance to the North. Rudolph Agricola: Six Lives and Erasmus’ Testimonies offers for the first time six biographies of Agricola, carefully edited, translated and annotated, providing a vivid image of cultural and intellectual life in the fifteenth century. The addition of fifty of the most important testimonies from Erasmus helps to evaluate the significance of Agricola’s work for the emerging humanism of the North. This edition of sources supplements the volume of Agricola’s letters (BLN, 2002) and fills a gap in our knowledge about a great man of letters and corrects a number of persistent misconceptions in modern scholarship.

Resonanties Verkenningen tussen kunsten en wetenschappen What can quantum mechanics teach us about beauty? How can artists be useful in legal investigations? Is it true that tax can be paid in the form of art objects? Their domains have long been strictly separated, but the arts and the sciences increasingly find common interests. In Resonanties: Verkenningen tussen kunsten en wetenschappen scientists examine artistic expressions and art researchers involve themselves in the scientific discourse. Encompassing perspectives from such disciplines as art history and musicology, this edited volume reflects on the way arts and sciences can inspire each other to new insights. In a time when the position of the arts is fiercely debated, this book advocates a central role for artistic research in society.

Denken in kunst Theorie en reflectie in het kunstonderwijs The edited volume Denken in kunst offers a variety of perspectives on theory, reflection and research in the arts. It thus forms an essential contribution to the current debate about higher education in the arts and shows the true nature of art readership in the Netherlands. Theory and practice in art education are often separated too strictly and artists schooled at art academies, schools of performing arts and conservatories often have had limited experience with theory and reflective knowledge. As a result, rising artists cannot take part in conversations about their own profession in the international discourse because they are not trained in contextualizing their own work. As such, the current practice calls for ‘reflective practitioners’ (Donald Schön): now is the time to ask questions about the meaning of theory and 9 reflection in art education. 9 10 LEIDEN Publications

Open Access Publishing and Printing on Demand LUP on its way to sustainable availability Authors have shown an increased interest in using a combination of different media and channels of distribution for their publications. LUP participates fully in these new publishing endeavors. Digital: Besides publishing titles in a paper format, LUP has the policy to make all book titles also available as an e-book. Open Access: LUP also publishes open access e-journals and monographs (the latter e.g. through the OAPEN Library) so 12

that these publications can reach the widest possible audience worldwide. Authors can opt for this different model of making publications available. Printing on Demand (POD): LUP uses the POD technology for certain publications which allows us to publish titles although they might have a limited print run. POD combines digital storage and availability. It has lower costs, no storage of printed stock, and needs a different initial investment. Books can be printed everywhere around the world and orders can be placed at all times: sustainable and available to the maximum. This way Leiden University Press offers authors and institutions the opportunity to have their academic publications professionally produced, marketed and internationally distributed.

In this “Key” thirteen eminent scholars focus on different aspects of the Khamsa, which is a collection of five long poems written by the Persian poet Nizami. Topics are mysticism, art history, comparative literature, science, and philosophy. It constitutes a significant development in the field of Nizami-studies, and more general, of Persian literature. It shows how classical Greek knowledge mingles with the Persian past and the Islamic culture in Nizami’s world. Johann-Christoph Bürgel is Professor Emeritus in Islamic Studies at Bern University and has received several prizes for his Nizami-translations. Christine van Ruymbeke is Soudavar Lecturer in Persian Studies at Cambridge University, UK.

“The list of the authors is representative of the international studies on Nizami at the present moment. […] If only for this reason, the appearance of this rich and many-sided volume of essays is of the greatest importance.” J.T.P. de Bruijn
