Ghosts and Spirits from the Tikotin Museum of Japanese Art

Felix Tikotin: a Life Devoted to Japanese Art Felix Tikotin (1893-1986) was a Jewish German dealer in Japanese Art. He discovered Japanese prints during the World Expo in 1911 in Dresden. Starting from a small gallery in Dresden, he moved to the Kurfürsten damm in Berlin where his gallery of Japanese Art was a big success. In 1933 he fled to Amsterdam from the Nazi’s and later went into hiding during the Second World War. He managed to survive and to keep his collection intact and donated his huge collection of Japanese Art to the city of Haifa in 1960 where the Tikotin Museum of Japanese Art was founded. This book tells the life story of Felix Tikotin and elucidates his role in promoting Japanese art and culture in Western Europe. It contains more than 100 works of art featuring Japanese ghosts and spirits, including paintings, prints and netsuke (miniature carvings). Ghosts and Spirits from the Tikotin Museum shares the theme of Tikotin’s first exhibition in his Berlin gallery in 1927. Includes contributions by Willem van Gulik, Kris Schiermeier, Patrizia Jirka-Schmitz and Ilana Singer Blaine.

Jaron Borensztajn has a background in theoretical Computer Science. He was co-founder of a middle-sized consultancy firm in the ‘90s and at the moment is an advisor for startups. In this study Bachrach describes in detail the English relations of Sir Constantine Huygens (1596-1687) who as secretary to stadtholder and prince Frederik Hendrik of Orange played a central role in the political, academic and cultural world of the Dutch Golden Age. Volume I treats Huygens’s first journey, a ‘grand tour’ to England. Volume II is devoted to his next travels on diplomatic missions to England and Venice. Huygens’s encounters with diplomats, scholars, poets, writers and artists during these embassies have had a profound influence on his career.

Bachrach’s research is based on original handwritten sources as letters, poems and autobiographical material. He succeeds in making these documents come alive in a fascinating synthesis of Huygens and his time. His study is not only a biographical monument to Huygens, but also provides an authentic insight in English and continental European culture of the seventeenth century. Volume I was published in 1963 but Volume II was never completed by Bachrach for publication. Now after 60 years Volume II has been edited by Evelien Bachrach and Ad Leerintveld and the long-awaited second Volume will be published in the ‘Huygens-year 2013’. A.G.H. Bachrach (1914-2009) was Professor of English literature at Leiden University and founder of the Sir Thomas Browne Institute. He wrote many books on Anglo-Dutch relations, in particular on the significance of Constantine Huygens. Bachrach was appointed as Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (CBE).

Laminar Technology and the Onset of the Upper Paleolithic in the Altai, Siberia The Siberian Altai region has yielded a cluster of Middle and Upper Paleolithic stratified sites that have been recently excavated. These sequences provide key evidence illustrating changes in material culture corresponding to the transition from the Middle to the Upper Paleolithic. In Europe, this phenomenon is associated with the replacement of Neanderthals by modern humans. Based on this archeological data set, local scholars have put forward a scenario of regional transition to explain the emergence cultural and biological modernity. Recent developments in ancient DNA studies, however, have complicated this model. This study takes a close look at the early development of Upper Paleolithic technical traditions in the Altai, based on a taphonomic and technological analysis of the Kara-Bom and Ust-Karakol laminar assemblages. The alternative chrono-cultural model presented as an attempt to conciliate archeological, environmental, genetic and paleontological data has substantial implications for our understanding of the Late Pleistocene peopling of Asia. Nicolas Zwyns is a researcher at the department of Human Evolution of the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology. His research focuses on the onset of Upper Paleolithic behavior in Central and North-East Asia.

A Crusader, Ottoman, and Early Modern Aegean Archaeology Built Environment and Domestic Material Culture in the Medieval and Post-Medieval Cyclades, Greece (13th-20th Centuries AD) This remarkable volume examines the built environment and aspects of domestic material culture of the Late Byzantine/Frankish, Ottoman and Early Modern Cyclades in the Aegean (13th-20th centuries). On the basis of primary archaeological data gathered by the Cyclades Research Project, the author reconstructs everyday domestic life in towns and villages. He also identifies socio-cultural identities that shaped or were reflected in the pre-Modern material remains and analyzes the history of island landscapes through the study of certain aspects of material culture, including settlement layout (fortified settlements and undefended nucleated villages), domestic buildings (housing of urban character, peasant housing and farmsteads), ceramics (locally produced and imported glazed tableware), internal fittings (built structures and mobile fittings) as well as clothing (male and female dress codes). Athanasios Vionis is lecturer in Byzantine Art and Archaeology at the University of Cyprus. He has been involved with survey and excavation projects in Greece, Cyprus and Turkey. Il Marmo Spirante Sculpture and Experience in Seventeenth-Century Rome The sculptors of the Roman Baroque, including masters such as Gian Lorenzo Bernini, Alessandro Algardi, and Giuliano Finelli, managed to achieve an unprecedented vivaciousness in their works. And yet, the apparent life of these sculptures is persistently obscured by their materiality. Soft, undulating flesh, dramatic movements, and fluttering draperies are captured in hard and lifeless marble. Thus, sculpture challenges the beholder, is cause for confusion or frustration. Taking the manner in which the beholder’s engagement with sculpture is played out in contemporary poetry and other sources as a point of departure and also introducing ideas from modern-day psychology, this study explores the various ways contemporary viewers dealt with sculpture’s double character. As a result, a new light is shed on some of the unquestionable masterpieces of European art. The Animated Image Roman Theory on Naturalism, Vividness and Divine Power Many Romans wrote about the belief that an image - a sculpture or painting, as well as a verbal description or a person on stage - is not a representation, but the image’s prototype, or that an image incorporates particular aspects of life. Some authors explained these beliefs as incorrect observation or wrong mental processing by the beholder. Others pointed at the excellent craftsmanship of the maker of the image. A third group looked at the supernatural involvement of its prototype, often a god. Together, these discourses on the animation of images bring us to what intellectuals from all over the Roman empire saw as reprehensible or acceptable in beholding images as works of art or objects of worship. Moreover, these discourses touch upon ontological and epistemological problems. The barrier between life and death was explored and also the conditions to obtain knowledge from observation. This book describes these various Roman theories on the animated image. Stijn Bussels is Assistant Professor at the Leiden University Institute for the Arts in Society. He is the principal researcher of the project, Elevated Minds. The Sublime in the Public Arts in Seventeenth-Century Paris and Amsterdam funded by the European Research Council Starting Grant.

The Story of Barzu As Told by Two Storytellers from Boysun, Uzbekistan The ancient Persian storytelling tradition has survived until the present day among the Tajik villages in the Gissar mountains of Uzbekistan. This book explores the story of Barzu and demonstrates that the historical Transoxania, since the time of Alexander the Great, has always been a melting pot of diverse shared cultures. In the village of Pasurxi, near Boysun in the Surxandaryo region of contemporary Uzbekistan, a vivid oral tradition exists on the basis of stories from the Persian Book of Kings or Šohnoma (Shahnama), composed more than a thousand years ago by the poet Firdavsi (Ferdowsi). These stories deal with the hero Barzu who is presented in the stories from Boysun as the offspring of Suhrob, one of the most tragic heroes of the Šohnoma, and his father, the legendary champion Rustam, ruler of Sistan. The storytellers Jura Kamol and Mullo Ravšan composed two different versions of the story of Barzu in the Tajik as spoken in the Surxandaryo region. They used to tell their stories during evening gatherings in the village. The stories have been recorded, transcribed and analysed by Ravshan Rahmoni and translated by Gabrielle van den Berg. ‘The aim of the authors is comparable to the noble mission of the author of the most famous version of the Shahnama epic tradition written down a millennium ago by the poet Firdawsi, who adapted many stories of Persian, Scythian and Parthian folklore and created an iconic collective national identity symbol.’ Dr F.I. Ravshan Rahmoni is Professor of Tajik literature at the Tajik State University in Dushanbe and works on Tajik oral traditions, specifically those of the Surkhandarya region in Uzbekistan. Verbal and Visual Rhetoric in a Media World Since Aristotle, the study of rhetoric has focused on the persuasive aspect of verbal discourse in the political, forensic and ceremonial domains. Rhetoric deals with doxa, with public discourse and persuasion as they develop in a world with no absolute knowledge, certainty or fixity. Changing cultural and political conditions urge us to discuss the status, scope and value of rhetorical studies as a discipline. One of these conditions is the increasing influence of visual communication. This collection brings together work that examines how rhetoric functions at this moment and how it balances tradition and renewal. It discusses new theoretical perspectives and it proposes different rhetorical analyses of actual topics. A substantial part of the collection focuses specifically on the issue of (new) media discourse and visual rhetoric as it appears in pictures, graphics, cartoons, documentaries and videos.

This question is explored in fourteen essays on the cultural output of the contemporary Latin American city: chaotic cities where the ideal of order has become fragmented, and where the walls of the literary city has become porous. The new and multiple urban routes – which superpose and cross each other – create the image of the post modern city. Written culture shows different forms of intervention in the city, and the urban imagery nourishes itself from the perished city as well as from the first contours of the cities of the future. Recreated cartographies in novels, performances in São Paulo and Santiago de Chile, performance poetry in Mexico D.F., testimonies of violence and of migration in Medellín and Lima, blogs from virtual communities of Havanna and San Juan, are just some of these kinds of chronicles analyzed in this perceptive study.
