AWARDS OF EXCELLENCE

Harmony Campbell of Vanceboro has been selected Lenoir Community College’s Academic Excellence Award recipient for 2022 and is recognized as one of the Great 58 in the North Carolina Community College System.

The award is presented annually to a currently enrolled student who demonstrates dedication to their educational goals in an associate degree program and maintaining a cumulative grade point average of a 3.25 or higher.

A Criminal Justice Technology student, she graduated from LCC in December 2021 and transferred to North Carolina Central University to continue her study in criminal justice.

She was a member of the College’s volleyball team and was named to the Regional 10 All-Academic Team for two consecutive years.

“Lenoir Community College has been an incredible place to attend, as it has helped me grow as a person,” Campbell said. “I had the best experience from the classroom to the court playing volleyball for LCC,” she said.

“I have enjoyed the past two years meeting new people, creating a family with my volleyball teammates, and enjoying the little things LCC does to make the student feel appreciated. Starting my college experience at LCC has been one of the best decisions I have made.”

ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE AWARD

Lenoir Community College student Jazmyne Pearson of Kinston has been named Lenoir Community College’s Dallas Herring Award recipient for 2022. She is one of the Great 58 in the North Carolina Community College System. The Dallas Herring Award was established to honor the late Dr. Dallas Herring, one of the state’s earliest advocates of community colleges. The award is bestowed annually upon a student who best embodies Dr. Herring’s philosophy of “taking people where they are and carrying them as far as they can go.”

A single mother since 2018, Pearson left an abusive relationship with the father of her four children. She has four boys, ages 9, 7 year-old twins, and 3 and while that is a full-time job, she also works a full-time state job and goes to LCC full-time.

“Working around her children’s schedule, dealing with their schoolwork, after-school activities, and doctor appointments are challenging tasks as she works to complete her own schoolwork, study, and manage her own personal health issues,” Dr. Maria Messner said in nominating Pearson for the award.

Pearson was diagnosed with diabetes in 2014 following the delivery of the twins. She has been

battling high blood sugar for a long time. She is trying hard to maintain her health while dealing with everyday parenting, but it has not been easy. She must go to the doctor every two weeks, and she takes insulin and other medication to control her diabetes.

While she was pregnant, her youngest son was diagnosed with a double inlet left ventricle. Since then, her baby has been through three open-heart surgeries. His last surgery was in October of 2021, which was successful. During his hospitalization, she worked very hard to maintain her grades and continue being the best mother she could be to her other children. Since being discharged from the hospital, he has progressed well but must be on lifetime medication and see a cardiologist for the rest of his life.

“My kids are what motivates me to keep striving,” Pearson said. “They’re the reason why I am pushing so hard to work towards earning my nursing degree and become a registered nurse. I want my children to know that they might reach some bumps in the road, but they should never give up, and keep going to the finish line.”

DALLAS HERRING AWARD

Lenoir Community College Student Government Association President Kaley Smith of Farmville has been named the Governor Robert Scott Leadership Award recipient, one of the Great 58 in the North Carolina Community College System.

The North Carolina Association of Community College Presidents created the Governor Robert Scott Leadership Award to highlight outstanding curriculum student leadership and service. Gov. Scott served as North Carolina’s chief executive from 1968-1972 and then was president of the North Carolina Community College System for 12 years from 1983-1995.

While at LCC, Smith has demonstrated outstanding leadership abilities by mentoring others. She is dedicated, dependable, honest, and hardworking.

As the College SGA president, Smith sits as an ex officio member on the Board of Trustees. She is the recipient of the President of the SGA, Greene

County Merit, and LCC Guarantee scholarships, which invests in high-achieving students.

While she works at the College as a work-study student in the Distance Education Department, Smith also volunteers to help with athletic events on campus in her free time. She is an active member of Ballards Crossroads Baptist Church, where she is involved in helping families during the holidays, playing back-up piano for the church choir, and assisting elderly churchgoers in times of need.

She plans to graduate with an associate in science degree this summer and transfer to North Carolina State University (NCSU) in the fall to study animal science with plans to attend veterinary school at NCSU after completing her four-year degree.

“Lenoir Community College has provided me an excellent education and has helped prepare me for future educational endeavors,” Smith said. “LCC cares about its students, and I am so grateful for all the support from the staff and faculty at the College.”

HEADING TO CITADEL

The love of baseball brought Zack Kramer of Florida to Lenoir Community College where he plays outfield for the LCC Lancers. He’s played baseball his whole life and he wanted to continue his career at the collegiate level. His older brother played for a junior college (JUCO) in Virginia and had a great experience there, so LCC seemed to be the right fit.

Exceling in the classroom with a 4.0 grade point average, he chose to study criminal justice and received the Dr. Frank Rocker, Jr. Scholarship. His dedication to the game and to his studies has landed him acceptance into The Citadel, South Carolina Corps of Cadets.

“I chose to apply to The Citadel because it is a great school academically,” he said. “It will also push me physically and

teach me a lot about discipline and leadership. I come from a military background as well. My father was a Marine and both of my grandfathers and my great uncle were in the Army.”

When receiving the news, Kramer said he was very excited and proud. “It’s such an honor to be accepted. I also feel more motivated than ever to reach my goals,” he said.

Kramer said LCC has been a great start to his academic journey. “LCC has prepared me academically to take the next steps at The Citadel,” he said. “Baseball has prepared me physically and mentally to overcome the many hardships that I’ll face.”

VISUAL ARTS EXHIBIT STUDENT ARTISTS

NIGEL WILLIAMS

CHANDON WILLIAMS

Lenoir Community College visual arts students Nigel Williams of Kinston and Chandon Williams of Snow Hill share more in common than their names and a visual arts degree. They both graduated within a few months of each other, and both are pursuing their dream of creating amazing art.

Nigel Williams, 19, graduated in May. “I am an animator and cartoonist. I have been drawing since I was an elementary school student and decided to make animation my dream career in 2014,” he said. “Since then, I found ways to improve and create things that make others happy, which is my mission. I will be presenting an animated motion picture that is my passion project, “Radical.” I hope the works you see will give you inspiration to create something.”

A self-taught animator/cartoonist, Nigel said he has been working hard to improve since 2014. He has been accepted and plans to attend the University of North Carolina School of the Arts’ Filmmakers School in August to earn a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in animation with a double major in screenwriting or directing.

Chandon Williams of Snow Hill attended Greene Central High School where he took art classes and learned more about painting, drawing, and the fundamentals of the artist process. “My next step was college. I did not want to go straight into a university because I felt it was not the right time, so community college was the next best thing to dip my toes in to just get the feel of what college was

all about,” he said. “This brought me to LCC in hopes of finding what I really want to do with my life and learn new things that I normally don’t do on a day-to-day basis,” he said.

Graduating in December, Chandon said he makes the art he does because starting with nothing but lines then coming out with a full-on detailed final product is amazing to him and satisfying. “Just the thought of doing all of that with my own hands is surprising,” he said. “Then I can share it with the people around me and make them smile and acknowledge the hard work I put into each and every one,” he said.

“I believe my artwork best represents me and what I love to do. The goals I have as an artist are to improve with each piece I do. So, when I am alone at night making the art I love, I feel like I don’t have a care in the world.”

ENGINEERING SCHOLARS

L enoir Community College, in partnership with ECU and the National Science Foundation, has presented Zachary Bishop of New Bern, NC; Kevin Jones of Rolesville, NC; and Hugo Sanchez-Delgado of Snow Hill, NC with the PIRATES (Providing Inclusive Residential And Transfer Experience Support in Engineering) Scholarship. This scholarship is intended to provide students interested in the field of engineering with the financial means to attend Lenoir Community College entirely free, if it is their intention to then transfer to ECU to pursue a four-year degree in engineering. In addition to the $3,000 annual amount awarded to each student while enrolled at LCC, the scholarship also may

provide students with additional funding for subsequent years at ECU upon transfer.

LCC is proud of each of these students for their accomplishments and their decision to attend LCC for engineering. The National Science Foundation and ECU’s Department of Engineering are helping to provide Lenoir, Jones, and Greene Counties students with the opportunity to further their education in engineering through these funds, which will ultimately benefit our community through developing a skilled workforce. Interested applicants in future academic years should contact LCC at 252.527.6223, ext. 974.

“The Foundation is the vital piece in the College’s ability to offer the next level of excellence and also pivotal to making higher education financially attainable for many of our students.”

A s Covid persisted into its second year, donors continued to respond to the needs of LCC students and the needs of the College. The Foundation received an outpouring of support in academic year 2020-2021.

The last two years have been unprecedented and changed a great deal about education in Lenoir, Greene, and Jones Counties and the nation. Despite the challenges, thanks to your generosity and support, LCC students found ways to continue pursuing their dreams and striving for a brighter future.

They became nurses, automotive mechanics, HVAC technicians, graphic designers, truck drivers, and welders. Many started their journey to a four-year college or university to become teachers, accountants, lawyers, pharmacists, and to pursue many different degrees in higher education. Your support is an investment in these students,

but so much more. Your gift changed families, the community, and the future of the region.

The Foundation is the vital piece in the College’s ability to offer the next level of excellence and also pivotal to making higher education financially attainable for many of our students. If you’re wondering how you can assist students and the College, consider making the Foundation part of your estate plans. The resources provided through planned giving have a lasting impact. 2022 PRESIDENT’S RECEPTION

WILLIAM I. HERRING CULINARY ARTS CENTER

Ms. Harriet Herring, formerly of Kinston, was the apple of her father’s eye and she felt the very same about him. A devoted daughter, she saw first-hand her father’s generosity to others. William I. Herring, Sr. is described by a friend, as “a model for fair dealing in business, for building and sustaining his community, and for his quiet support for those in need.” These are lessons he taught his children.

Carrying on her father’s legacy, Ms. Herring, who now lives in Chapel Hill, has endowed three scholarships through the Lenoir Community College Foundation and most recently, through a generous donation, the culinary dining area in the Waller Building is now named after her father, the William I. Herring, Sr. Culinary Arts Center.

“We are so appreciative of Ms. Herring and what she has and continues to do to help students attend college,” LCC President Dr. Rusty Hunt said. “She has a genuine love of her community and for helping others, and our students are very fortunate because of her generosity and love of education.”

LCC Foundation Executive Director Jeanne Kennedy said to know Ms. Herring is to love her. “She has helped many students throughout the years and we appreciate her support and her commitment to the College and our students.”

Ms. Herring said she feels very fortunate that she can help others the way her father did. “My father would have loved knowing that he was still helping others,” Ms. Herring said. “He helped people and he was the most honest person.”

Hayes McNeill, a friend of the family, wrote about Ms. Herring’s father saying like many in his day, he didn’t have much schooling, but he was “a bright boy,” with “a lot of native intelligence.” After finishing the fourth grade, he worked full time at the farm. When he turned 18, he turned to agricultural and business enterprises that led to acquiring other farms, selling farm equipment and tractors, operating Herring Gas, and, for four decades, managing his Central and New Central tobacco warehouses that benefited many Kinston area growers, large and small. He was unpretentious. His daughter also remembers “No office. He didn’t have that kind of personality.”

Pictured left to right: Asia Roberson, Harriet Taylor Herring, LPN Scholarship recipient; Jeanne Kennedy, LCC Foundation Executive Director; Roaxann Reaves, Harriet Taylor Herring LPN Scholarship recipient; Ms. Harriet Herring, Dr. Rusty Hunt, LCC President; and Junie Robles, William I. Herring, Sr. Memorial Scholarship recipient.

McNeill said he always identified himself as a farmer. The Herrings had a large presence here for as long as anyone could remember, “as far back as the Indians,” as one relative put it. His grandfather’s farm was on what is now on Highway 70 W. His father farmed north of Kinston, where he and his school-teacher wife raised their three children.

Throughout his life, he was quietly generous, using his financial success quietly and efficiently. He supported charities, sheltered workshops, and colleges—Chowan and Campbell among them—and was a sustaining supporter of the Salvation Army in Kinston. He was proud to serve as deacon in his church.

For recreation, Herring “loved floundering” from his skiff. It was daughter Harriet’s job “to stand behind him and catch the crabs in the crab net.” W. I. took under his wing Marshall Happer, a fledgling UNC student who became a tennis great and a lawyer. “I’ve never met a finer person than W. I.,” who “gave me a job for a dollar an hour (double what I was worth), so I’d have spending money at school,” Happer said.

Like many in a vanished breed, he was a man who bought and sold with a handshake, who cared about his community, and who used his good fortune to benefit those in need, whether he knew them or not.

Recently, a luncheon, catered by the LCC Culinary Arts students, was held in the newly named center to celebrate the naming of the center and three scholarship recipients, Roaxann Reaves, Asia Roberson, and Junie Robles, who are beneficiaries of scholarships endowed by Ms. Herring. It was a time to share stories about Ms. Herring’s father, her passion for education and the importance of giving back to a community she continues to hold dear.

She told the students that it was never too late to follow their educational dreams. A graduate of UNC Chapel Hill, Ms. Herring decided to go back to a community college later in life to pursue a nursing degree. “The community college gave me a chance to get my life together to pursue

something I really wanted to do. It’s important to get the education you want.”

Reaves of New Bern received the Harriet Taylor Herring LPN Scholarship. Married with one child, she is a member of the Lamplighters Club. She received a National Defense Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, and Army Achievement Medal. She is a certified nursing assistant in a long-term care facility since 2009. She plans to graduate as a practical nurse. She said her grandmother was a nurse and her grandmother’s passion to help others is her inspiration.

Roberson of Pink Hill also received the Harriet Taylor Herring LPN Scholarship and is a member of the Lamplighters Club. She volunteers for Abundant Life Miracle Center, assists afterschool with homework assignments, and helps distribute food with the foodbank. She received the Youth Volunteer Award at Carolina East Medical Center and completed 91 hours of volunteer service in the summer of 2018. She is pursuing the LPN Program because she believes in impacting the lives of others through her work. After completing the program, she plans to apply to the bridge program for the Associate Degree Nursing Program and later pursue a bachelor’s degree in nursing.

Robles of Trenton received the William I. Herring, Sr. Memorial Scholarship. A graduate of Jones Senior High School, he loves horticulture. He works part time at Driver Heating and Cooling in Trenton and hopes to open his own business in the future. He plans to attend the University of Mount Olive to pursue a four-year degree in horticulture.
