PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Dr. Rusty Hunt I

am proud to present Lenoir Community College’s 2023 Annual Report highlighting our students and our accomplishments for the past academic year. As we celebrate 65 years of excellence, this year has been a year of innovation and change, but one constant has continued to be true – our faculty and staff have remained committed to bringing quality educational and training opportunities to our students, and to the citizens we serve in Lenoir, Greene, and Jones Counties.

We are investing in our students and our community partners, working together to achieve a quality experience so our students will be successful in their careers and in life as they move forward. We are proud to provide a friendly and inclusive environment where students can learn and be successful. This report shares only a few of the thousands of success stories that we are privileged to be a part of every day. Our students are our top priority, and we strive to offer the best opportunities and services available.

“We are proud to provide a friendly and inclusive environment where students can learn and be successful.”

As a leader for economic development in the area, we are providing an educated workforce needed to attract and retain employers in our region. We are preparing the workforce not only for the job market of today, but also for the job market of the future. Now is the time that we are needed most, and we are constantly evaluating and updating our programs and services to remain on the cutting edge of technology and to meet the needs of those we serve.

I am honored to lead an incredible team of professionals who are reimagining the student experience to make it the best possible for those we serve. We have redesigned the way we deliver education and found creative ways to deliver services in an ever-changing environment. From traditional face-to-face classes to online and synchronous offerings, students have more opportunities for learning on a schedule that meets their needs. Awards of Excellence Dominic English DALLAS HERRING AWARD

L

enoir Community College graduate Dominic English has been named LCC’s Dallas Herring Award recipient for 2023. She is one of the Great 58 in the North Carolina Community College System. The Dallas Herring Award was established to honor the late Dr. Dallas Herring, one of the state’s earliest advocates of community colleges. The award is bestowed annually upon a student who best embodies Dr. Herring’s philosophy of “taking people where they are and carrying them as far as they can go.” English is a great example of Dr. Herring’s philosophy as noted by determination to overcome seemingly insurmountable odds, and to dream of a better future. Moving her family from Maryland to North Carolina nine years ago, English was unsure of what was ahead. “Dominic came to the Medical Office Administration Program with little to no self-confidence,” said her instructors Carla Jones and Christy Culbreth. “We assured her that we would help her every step of the way and very soon, her phone number became recognizable,” Jones said. Fast forward to graduation in May. She has accomplished so much starting with earning her GED, completing

two degrees, Medical Office Administration and Office Administration – Legal Assistant and securing full-time employment in her field. But it was not smooth sailing. In the fall of 2022, she began having some medical issues and later found out she had a brain aneurysm, which was causing migraine headaches and other issues with fatigue and exhaustion. Facing brain surgery, she was determined to complete her education. Her surgery in December caused her to take an incomplete in all her classes except for one. In January, she called her instructors to assure them she would be enrolled in spring semester, an ambitious goal, but one she achieved. “As overwhelming as it was for her at times, she still kept persevering in her schoolwork while working, and she graduated in May with her degrees,” said Dr. John Paul Black, Vice President of Student Services and Workforce Development. “I was determined to finish,” English said. “I participated in work-based learning through an internship at Kinston Vocational Rehabilitation as a receptionist. From there I was hired in a full-time role. I even recruited my daughter to enroll in the Office Administration Program and I also convinced my son to further his education.”

Awards of Excellence Joslyn Evans ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE AWARD

L

enoir Community College graduate Joslyn Evans has been selected the College’s Academic Excellence Award recipient for 2023 and is recognized as one of the Great 58 in the North Carolina Community College System.

“Sports have always been a passion of mine, as was learning,” Evans said. “I struggled to maintain above average grades in high school, but I did not let that determine how my college semesters would go once I got back into it.”

The award is presented annually to a currently enrolled student who demonstrates dedication to their education goals in an associate degree program and maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 or higher.

“When I moved to North Carolina, I wanted to go back to college and start learning more about my dream career as a social worker/psychologist, and the opportunity was granted to me through free tuition and best of all – volleyball,” she said.

A Human Services Technology/Social Services major, Evans will be graduating at the end of the summer semester. She has excelled outside the classroom as well. While at LCC, she was a member of the College’s volleyball team and was named to the Region 10 AllAcademic Team for two consecutive years. After graduation, she transferred to Bluefield University in Virginia to continue her study in social work, and to play volleyball. She plans to work as a counselor upon graduation.

“It’s a blessing to be able to play volleyball and continue my education, and the determination I have to make sure I do my best in both has helped me build my confidence and self-esteem along the way,” Evans said. “Times have been tough, but I always try to remind myself that within the toughest days, the most growth is attained. This helps me keep moving forward with my college degree.”

Awards of Excellence Alyiah Shackleford BOB SCOTT AWARD

L

enoir Community College graduate Alyiah Shackleford has been recognized as the College’s Governor Robert Scott Leadership Award recipient, one of the Great 58 in the North Carolina Community College System. The North Carolina Association of Community College Presidents created the Governor Robert Scott Leadership Award to highlight outstanding curriculum student leadership and service. Gov. Scott served as North Carolina’s chief executive from 1968-1972 and then was president of the North Carolina Community College System for 12 years from 1983-1995. While at LCC, Shackleford demonstrated outstanding leadership abilities by serving as the Student Government Association president. In that role, she also served as an ex officio member of the College’s Board of Trustees. She has also served as the SGA Parliamentarian. Shackleford was a recipient of the LCC Guarantee Scholarship, which invests in high-achieving students and the Gurley Scholarship, serving as a College Ambassador, representing LCC at events. She has also been recognized academically on the Dean’s List and is a member of the College’s Omicron Rho Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa. A talented vocalist, she has been involved with musical performances during her time at LCC. She was a workstudy student in the Financial Aid Department and a 2022 Graduation Marshal.

become a neuroscientist or a psychiatrist. In reflecting on her leadership experience, she said “It has been an experience that has taught me to be the best version of myself, but that is not all true. The experience has challenged me to overcome boundaries I set to keep me safe. It has reshaped my entire consciousness and opened my perspective to more than one.” “The experience has made me question myself more times than I can count because there was always a time when I would second guess my leadership skills and not believe I could achieve the impossible,” she said. “Leadership experience is meant to challenge those willing to take on tasks others see as impossible to complete. The experience is intended to reform perspectives, characters, and ideas. If a person can accept those tough qualities, they are on their way to being outstanding leaders because anyone can do it.” Shackleford said that she considered her most outstanding contribution as a leader was “being there for my peers whenever they needed someone to talk to and understand their situations when no one else would listen. Many individuals find it hard to share and talk about their problems with people who are their family or people they go to share their concerns with, and this mostly happens when we come into our teenage years.”

“So being able to be there when they needed me the most was like a reward for being their leader. Tr ain the East Initiative T

hrough a partnership between Lenoir, James Sprunt, Sampson, and Wayne Community Colleges, the colleges were recently awarded $1 million from the Anonymous Trust in support of a new, two-year Latino Initiative called “Train the East.” Each community college will receive $250,000 to be used over the two years. The “Train the East” initiative is part of a wider state collaboration, myFutureNC, a state project that aims to close the educational attainment gap and provide academic credentials for North Carolinians. The four community colleges will recruit, train, and support students from Latino communities in rural eastern North Carolina, building a skilled and credentialed workforce for Lenoir, Greene, Jones, Duplin, Sampson, and Wayne Counties. Funds will be used to provide a full-time outreach recruiter/success coach, as well as offer student scholarships to help with tuition, books, and other fees at each of the respective colleges. “We are excited to be a part of the Train the East initiative, and we are so grateful to the Anonymous Trust for the confidence they have in our consortium,” says LCC President Dr. Rusty Hunt. “I also want to thank Cecilia Holden with myFutureNC for her leadership as we strive to produce two million workforce credentials by the year 2030. We are committed to providing the workforce that our business partners and employers in eastern North Carolina need.” Hunt said the Latino population in the area served by our colleges is the fastest growing demographic group, and the success rates for our Latino students who enroll are at or above average. “LCC has been serving Latino students through our Centro Educativo Latino, which was established in 2011. This initiative will assist in expanding our workforce training opportunities,” he said. (Continued on next page)

“The Hispanic student population in NC Public Schools has increased 41 percent in the last 10 years, while the total population in public schools has decreased 4 percent. Many of the parents of these Hispanic students, as well as other Hispanic adults in our local community, don’t have higher levels of education,” says Cecilia Holden, CEO of myFutureNC. “Based on current trends, 209,000 of the 290,000 Hispanic students enrolled in NC Public Schools will not go on to receive a postsecondary degree or industry-valued credential.” Holden said while the data show that Hispanic students are enrolling in college at lower rates, those who do enroll are completing at rates at or above the statewide average. “Therefore, it’s important to increase awareness of educational opportunities and remove barriers to entry for these students. The Train the East initiative aligns well with the state’s goal of two million by 2030, with a focus on increasing the number of Latino students who enroll in and complete postsecondary education programs. We are grateful to Anonymous Trust for supporting this partnership between Lenoir, James Sprunt, Sampson, and Wayne Community Colleges.” This unique collaboration is a result of the Go Global Latino Pipeline Initiative where representatives from education, economic development, business, government, and others from the six counties as well as leadership from myFutureNC visited Mexico to open the lines of communication to help meet educational needs.

“This travel experience was life-changing for the entire team,” Anonymous Trust. “I have loved seeing the partnership between the four community colleges and the team spirit of helping each other.” — MARGARET TURLINGTON

QEP L

enoir Community College’s (LCC) Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP), titled All Aboard! Destination: Success, aims to increase fall-to-fall retention by implementing a framework of integrated services and supports that will address equity concerns through an enhanced student onboarding experience. LCC’s QEP was developed through a broad, multi-phased approach that included an exhaustive review of literature and best practices, lessons learned from the institution’s participation in state and national programs, extensive assessment, and collaboration among faculty, staff, students, and administration. LCC has developed a definition of onboarding as a year-long experience that leverages an onboarding survey, advising based on momentum-metric research, and ongoing faculty and staff professional development to provide enhanced advising and support. The resulting onboarding framework will provide personalized case management, promoting equitable experiences for LCC’s diverse students and allowing faculty and staff to respond to individual needs, resulting in a more inclusive student experience.

Congratulations to Jimmy Taylor, Digital Marketing Coordinator, for designing the winning QEP logo. The logo was selected through a campuswide contest. Foundation Director’s Message T

his year, the Foundation celebrated three milestones. More than $300,000 was awarded in scholarships to deserving, hardworking students. They dreamed of being nurses, teachers, automotive mechanics, pilots, welders, business owners, graphic designers, scientist, doctors, and so much more. Some of these students will transfer to four-year colleges and universities and others will immediately start their career. You made their educational goals a reality because of your generous donation. With your help, there is a future where the Foundation will award $500,000 in scholarships. No student should be denied the opportunity to get an education because of finances. It has long been the goal of the Foundation to close the gap between the students that can afford an education and those who cannot.

The Foundation partnered with Arts and Sciences to bring musical theatre back to the Briley Auditorium. We christened the Turner Stage with A Christmas Carol ~ A New Musical. The production was a huge success and it officially kicked off our new Performing Arts Series. We just completed Roald Dahl’s Matilda ~ The Musical and Disney’s The Little Mermaid, and we are looking forward to White Christmas ~The Musical in December. The talent and dedication of the performers amazes me. We would love to see you at our performances. You will certainly be entertained.
