INTERNATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF LIONS CLUBS—DISTRICT 60B

Message by District Governor Lion Isaac Solomon MJF

with members of the cancelled Lions Club in Nevis where we discussed among other things, a plan of action to have the club regain active status.

My visits to the clubs was quite an experience. I was fortunate to meet so many lions and Leos who on a daily basis make it their mission in life to engage in random acts of service to humanity Lions/Leos, with no conditional-ities. I am always touched by perI have completed the mansons whose passion to make datory annual visitations to the communities in which the clubs in the District. I they live better and on my visited all 61 clubs and their visits, I met many. I was Leo Clubs where possible, thrilled by the stories, the including hosting of a Leo sacrifices and indeed the difForum for the Leo's of Reference these lions have gions 1 and 4. Of note is the made in the lives of so many fact that I held a meeting individuals. I am satisfied

that we do have among our membership, a large proportion of individuals who demonstrate the right values and principles to sustain our role in making the world a better place. Unfortunately, many of these lions are not regular attendees to meetings and activities at the District level. As we head to our 35th MD Convention in Kingston Jamaica, it is my hope that lions would have heeded my call, as part of their leadership development and understanding of lionism, to turn out in their numbers and take some responsibility for their own membership experience. From the Editor & Publisher…..

District 60B, under the Stewardship of District Governor, Lion Isaac Salmon, MJF, we have experienced numerous successes as he continues to steer the Course . For the months of March and April our hardworking District Governor continues on his Audit trail. The District is sadden to have lost stalwart members to a higher “service”. The Clubs/Lions have accepted the International President’s call to grow our Membership and so we welcome new members to the District. We have also been hard at work, as seen by the projects highlighted in this edition. The Harbor is in sight ! Inside this issue: Excerpts from District 60B Chairpersons

It was noted that the First Quarter of 2015 was the “Earth’s Warmest”, so here are some Benefits of Planting a Tree: Trees and the Environment: From an environmental perspective, trees are vital to many processes that make life on Earth possible. They conserve soil and water, control avalanches, prevent desertification, protect coastal areas and stabilize sand dunes. Trees and People: People around the world depend on trees for their livelihood. Nearly three hundred million people live in forests and rely on trees for fuel wood, medicine and food. Another 1.6 billion people depend on trees and forests for subsistence and income. Trees and the Economy: Forestry-related industries generated nearly US$500 billion in 2006. OUR TIME TO ROAR! LEO CLUB AWARENESS MONTH Have you ever walked past an empty restaurant or party and decided not to go in? A dull, empty place just doesn’t seem very appealing, right? Unfortunately, the same thing happens to our Leo Clubs when we don’t create a buzz and share our impact with the community or let our friends see us in action–we simply won’t get noticed. We are very well aware that our main objective is and will always be about serving, but, we need to share our impact with others. Leos, it’s time to roar! April is celebrated as Leo Club Awareness Month, during which we are given and those opportunity to get involved and raise awareness of who we are, what we do and how we make a difference in the lives of we serve. In fact, the Leo Club of Castries, St. Lucia remains one of the most visible Leo Clubs in our District, having been recently recognized in their national news as they celebrated the 31st Anniversary of their charter in early April and if you haven’t already read the article, you can read it at http://goo.gl/IsXt3l and see why. As a social media enthusiast (junkie perhaps?), it thrills me to be able to share my club’s good news online and to see other Leo Clubs from around the Caribbean in action and in the media as well. Social media has allowed us to break down barriers in distance and has helped to shape the public’s perception of us. While it remains one of the most cost effective ways to spread the word, we must never overlook other means of getting noticed. Do you know the power of your pin? For me, it’s always been my way of showcasing my connection with Lions Clubs International on a daily basis and is often the subject at the start of a conversation when I am approached by a potential new member. Leos, April is our month to shine and raise awareness, but don’t stop there. Challenge yourselves to wear your vests to meetings and projects and wear your pins to work every day. Don’t be afraid to wear those old Convention shirts around your community and if you’re bold enough, try wearing a club shirt to work on casual Friday. Roar out loud: “I’m a Leo

(Cont’d from page 1) Message from: District Governor Lion Isaac Solomon, MJF I want to end this message with a profound and heartfelt thanks to the Cabinet and District officers who ensured that my visitations went well. I know it was very challenging in some instances, given my own schedule but everyone came up trumps, surely a mark of excellence! A special thanks to those who provided home hospitality; to those Cabinet officers who accompanied me on the visitations; those lions who took the time to drive me around on the lovely highways and the treacherous terrain; and finally, a big thank you to those lions and Leo's who attended the club audits. We have within us what it takes to bring to life the tenets of Service Excellence. We now need to bring others onboard! VOLUME 5

LIONS CLUB OF MANDEVILLE & THE SOUTHERN REGIONAL HEALTH AUTHORITY LAUNCHED PATHOLOGY LAB FUND 15.04.15! The Lions Club of Mandeville, seeing the need for a Pathology Lab to serve the medico needs of the communities , partnered with the Southern Regional Health Authority (SRHA) and the Ministry of Health to launch the first phase to raise Funds for the Lab, by acquiring a $3 million histopathology microscope. The Lions Club will this year use all proceeds from its annual 'Men who Cook' event slated for May 3 to purchase the microscope and begin work for the building of the lab, a move commended by Minister of Health Dr Fenton Ferguson as a perfect example of a public-private partnership.
