ISSUE 01 SEPTEMBER
Leos of Regions 1 & 4, 2013 to 2014 promises to be an exciting and
fulfilling year. Our International President, Lion Barry Palmer has identified on his concise list of primary goals for this year, a challenge to all Lions to enforce the concept that the Leos are our partners in our activities and in the service we give to others. In my personal goals for District 60B, I have charged our district Leo and Youth Chairman to empower the Leos of the district. In addition, for the first time in recent years I have established a Lions Opportunities for Youth Committee which is charged with enhancing the wellbeing and support of the youth of District 60B including the Leos. Already, many avenues of opportunities have been opened and expanded by this committee not the least being our Governor General's personal focus on youth through his "I Believe" programme. In your own group of members, your Regions 1 & 4 Leo Secretariat has a new Secretary/Treasurer who is very active and focused and keen to expand the visibility of Leos in the society of the communities served by your regions. I urge you all to take keen note of this new and dynamic environment and to embrace the resources being made available to you. You have a tremendous opportunity to apply the most meaningful and honourable effort known to mankind - that of service to others as "We Never Stand Taller than When We Stoop to Help Someone". I urge you all to Follow Your Dreams with a Passion for Compassion and have a beautiful and rewarding year in service. Lion Izett McCalla MJF, District Governor, District 60B

Message from the Region Secretary/Treasurer As I take up the mantle of this awesome responsibility for my Movement, I deem it a great privilege and honour to be a Leo. The Leo Movement will be making leaps and bounds in the national and international arena this year as we strive to live up to the theme: “Visibility Through Service”. It has always been a passion of mine to see our great Movement propel in this direction. As a result of this, I have laid the foundation to see this structure mounted in success. The structuring of my plans and goals for the Movement for my year in office has done this, in addition to the Officers’ Training School that Lion Steve Prince MJF conducted at the beginning of the year. We have successfully completed our first Quarter for this Leoistic Year and we hope to complete the ensuing three in fine style. Let us be guided by the thought Ghandi once vocalised: “You must be the change you want to see.” So as we strive for Visibility Through Service, let us all put hands and hearts together to make this vision a reality. In doing so, most of the activities this year will be centred on gaining a greater public presence for Leoism. As such, the clubs have been asked to plan at least one major activity that will give the Movement a push in this direction. We will be undertaking a myriad of activities that will be combined to encapsulate the clubs and ensure that the desired outcome is achieved. Among my plans, is to visit the Alpha and Omega Clubs as a form of motivation. A great thrust will also be put into Marketing and Public Relations through the procurement of media publicity for the movement. This is in a bid to get the greater public sensitized about our existence, our deeds and the purpose of Leoism. In addition to this, I have proposed to get increased support for the clubs from the Leo Advisors to ensure their maximum productivity. Special appointments have also been made to ensure that the year runs as smoothly as humanly possible, and that the clubs all reap the rewards and benefits of a great year filled with service and fulfilment. We have embarked upon a significant year that will be filled with momentous junctures for the entire movement. As we move head first on this journey, let us all endeavour to work together for the advancement of this great Movement that we have grown to know and love.

E ditor’s Note Did you know that Lions are the only cat species that form social groups called Prides? Just as lions stick together, Leos serve together and that’s why we serve with PRIDE! During this year’s Leo Convention, I watched in awe as Leos from Jamaica and the Cayman Islands came together in service and fellowship. I watched the Planning Committee pull off what seemed to be a nearly impossible task and wondered how they managed to achieve something so spectacular with very little resources; I was instantly reminded of Lion Janet Ferguson’s brief address at last year’s Convention Meeting in Negril: “Things may not always turn out the way you want them and it may not always be perfect, but you are Leos and you should be flexible enough to survive.” Those are words that have motivated and inspired me to continuously serve with pride despite the many challenges that have arisen. This year’s Convention theme was “LEOISM: Restored, Renewed, Rejuvenated”. The word that struck me most was renewed. I could not have thought of a better way to showcase our resilience and ability to bounce back with vigour in the face of adversity! As you will see, most of our features will speak to the importance of highlighting what we do as Leos and the Secretariat’s role in preserving the quality of service we offer to our communities and I invite you to journey with us this year as we visibly and actively renew the movement with a passion for compassion. I hope you enjoy our newsletter!

October is Membership Growth Month! October is recognized as Membership Growth Month on the Lions Clubs International Calendar and both Lions and Leos are encouraged to recruit new members and work on their retention strategies. Remember that membership in a Leo Club is open to young professionals of good character, who are eager to serve in their communities. Therefore, existing members are encouraged to invite persons of interest to their respective club meetings, socials and projects. According to Barry Palmer, President of Lions Clubs International: “By inviting new members – women, young people, family, friends – and by focusing on member satisfaction through an improved club atmosphere, we can retain more members and increase our capacity to serve others.” Our District Governor has identified Membership as one of the core areas of focus for this Administrative Year (2013/14) and it is our dream to see all Leos utilizing “Visibility Through Service” to attract potential new members. Let’s aim to spread the word about the benefits of membership to prospective Leos!
Selling Your Club : Here are six (6) effective selling tools to help with your Membership Recruitment Drive: 1) A major service activity that involves every member of the club and has a significant, positive impact on its intended population. 2) A major fundraising project in which the community can participate and in which it can contribute. 3) A strong public relations program that provides a continuous, consistent line of communication among all the members of your club and between the club and the community. 4) Well-organized, interesting, informative and productive club meetings. 5) A feeling of teamwork, cooperation and cohesiveness between club members. 6) A strong membership growth, development and retention program that provides immediate orientation and involvement of club members, and continues to nurture their development throughout their years of service.
