Cropped 1969-2015

The bed is placed in the corner of the room, it’s still unmade from the night’s sleep. My wet towel hangs from the chair that is slightly turned away from the table and on the table lays an open newspaper and a pack of cigarettes. But nobody ever slept in the bed or sat on the chair by the table and the towel is not mine. Having grown up in ‘80s Denmark I remember the moment when we got the new IKEA catalogue in the mailbox. Perusing the catalogue was a popular pastime in the family and it could remain in the hands of one family member for hours as they sat on the couch browsing through it. Flicking through these staged spaces was an obsessive sensation for me. Even though I was a kid and had neither money nor urge to make these objects mine, there was something else about it – an imaginary world I could enter and move around in. This book contains 48 digital collages made of cropped images from all of the IKEA catalogues published in Denmark – from the very first in 1969 to the latest in 2015 when this publication was finished. The selection was made with a focus on the recurrence of elements that gives these fictive spaces an appearance of human life. M. F. Clausen, 2015
