ashes is part of ashes & dust, a two volume artist book by Mark Luyten and Jean-Michel Meyers. ashes gathers in chronological order, all photographs made with two Polaroid SX-70 instant film packs of ten exposures each. The photos were taken in March 2003, though some prints have been lost over time. These two sets of photos document a studio tryout of the video work White Walls (2003) by Mark Luyten. They intend to capture a projected image of Giuliana, played by Monica Vitti, in the ‘fog scene’ of Michelangelo Antonioni’s film Il deserto rosso (1964).

The photos were taken in March 2020. These two sets of photos document a studio tryout of an unfinished video work by Mark Luyten. They intend to capture a projected image of Marilyn Monroe singing Happy Birthday, Mister President on May 19, 1962, at Madison Square Garden, NYC.
