A MASS STAKE: FROM PHOTO DISSEMINATION TO ARCHIVE MANAGEMENT

The Institut pour la Photographie brings together institutions, photography agents and photographers to exchange ideas and viewpoints on archive management, its history and its development from analogue to digital.

The second day will be dedicated to the same theme as the research support programme launched by the Institut in 2018: Photography, object of dissemination

The dissemination of photography will be addressed through its visual media: from printing to books and digital tools, from agency sales to shared photography, from postcards to political magazines. Navigating between the material and cultural history of the image, the day's events will analyse the use of photos in film, contemporary art, media and politics. Catarina Boieiro, Aurélien Froment, Audrey Leblanc, Christel Pedersen and Raquel Scheffer are conducting their research with the support of the Institut's Programme.

This film, crafted as an immersion in Algerian history, through a collection of postcards sold in a street in Algiers, is a fascinating reflection of colonial and post-colonial iconography.

3.00PM AUDREY LEBLANC

Disseminating one's own maps of the world and society: iconographers and televised news programmes (1960- 1986) Photo agencies sold their photos to the former French broadcaster, ORTF. As part of their relationship with ORTF, photo researchers’ contribution to the management of collections helps explain the dissemination - through the material management of images - of a map of the world and its values in the media environment.

Audrey Leblanc is a doctor of the EHESS specialising in history and civilisations. She teaches at the University of Lille and jointly leads a research seminar entitled "Photography, publishing, press: a cultural history of image producers’ at Cehta/EHESS.

ESTELLE BLASCHKE

Towards the augmented image. The automation of photography's information structures. Today, with the digital processing of images, the data itself is as valuable as the photo's visual side, turning the very notion of the image on its head.

Senior FNS researcher, Faculty of Arts, University of Lausanne.

CATARINA BOIEIRO

A critical archaeology of images: photography as a tool for disseminating the liberation movement (in Portuguese-speaking African countries).
