As if it depended on a genetic factor or solely on public responsibility.

Platform for Change is an observatory on the world of art, architecture and design through the lenses of one of the most influential independent cultural centres of the contemporary art world and one of the most lively projects of the reassessment and rebirth of a dying city: the Farm Cultural Park in Sicily.

They weren’t born as we see them today.

Cities change because people make them change.

Platform for Change è un osservatorio sul mondo dell’arte, dell’architettura e del design attraverso le lenti di uno dei centri culturali indipendenti più influenti del mondo artistico contemporaneo e uno dei progetti più effervescenti di ripensamento e rinascita di una città moribonda: Farm Cultural Park in Sicilia.

II ACT - PRESENT FAVARA, JUNE 25, 2016

It's been a while since I no longer stay in touch. So much has happened in recent times that i have been overwhelmed by the events. This is my favourite time of the year. They come from all over the continent (and beyond), each one with its own accent, each with its own view of the world. Time seems speeded up now, there's always a bustle of people, a swarm of labourers labouring … sorry for the pun.

The nice thing is that they come to us and transform us, inside and outside. The content they carry is palpable, you listen, you smell, is fun, thought-provoking, sometimes pisses you off. And its incredibly useful. It is a content that is useful, but not only to us who live here. It makes you feel useful. It is true, they have saved us. Three years ago an artist with red trousers and dark curls popped up and within a week he has remade my look. Not to brag, but I am really handsome now.

And I'm not the only one. I'm surrounded by beauty. I'm surrounded by colours. This year then, I have outdone myself. If you saw me you would not believe your eyes: I have a perforated orange dress, impossible not to notice me. Oh, and they also gave me a name, now. Excuse me, really, but now I'll have to leave because the party is about to begin. I do not even want to miss a second of this show. This gives me the strength.

È da un po’ che non mi faccio sentire. Sono successe così tante cose in questi ultimi tempi che sono stato travolto dagli eventi. È il periodo che preferisco dell’anno, questo. Arrivano da tutto il continente (e oltre), ognuno con il suo accento, ognuno con la sua visione del mondo. Il tempo sembra accelerato ora, c’è sempre un via vai di gente, un brulichio di operosi all’opera … scusa il gioco di parole.

La cosa bella è che vengono da noi e ci trasformano, dentro e fuori.

Il contenuto che portano è palpabile, si ascolta, si annusa, fa divertire, fa riflettere, a volte fa incazzare. Ed è incredibilmente utile. È un contenuto che serve, ma non solo a noi che qui ci viviamo. Fa sentire utili. Si è vero, ci hanno salvato. Tre anni fa è spuntato un artista con i pantaloni rossi e i riccioli scuri, e in una settimana mi ha rifatto il look. Non per vantarmi ma sono davvero bello ora. E non sono il solo.

Sono circondato da bellezza. Sono circondato da colori. Quest’anno poi, ho superato me stesso. Se mi vedessi non crederesti ai tuoi occhi: ho un vestito arancione traforato, impossibile non notarmi. Ah, e mi hanno anche dato un nome, adesso. Scusami davvero ma ora devo lasciarti perché sta per iniziare la festa. Non voglio perdermi neanche un secondo di questo spettacolo. Il presente mi dà la forza.

III ACT - FUTURE FAVARA, JUNE 25, 2030

Its been 20 years since the first time i got in touch with you. 20 years are not an eternity its true, but a lot of water has passed under the bridge, so to say. Perhaps you will know more than me, just read the newspapers, we are on everyone's lips, we became celebrities. Its been weeks that I see strange faces here, and this somewhat worries me. They seem experts, I do not know what of, but they are certainly experts. They hold large digital sheet in their hands, they point red laser at us and take the measures. They continue to take photographs of us and this is starting to bother me. We have become a case of state.

Indeed, some of us swear they have heard that we will become a proper micro-state. A sort of model to be exported. I should be proud and happy, I know. On the other hand, my life changed completely thanks to such a successful experiment. Yet I fear. What if all this fame went to our head? And if all these artists who every year fill us the summers go somewhere else? You're right, the abandonment anxiety needs defeat, you have to think positive. The future is yet to be built.

Sono passati 20 anni dalla prima volta che mi sono messo in contatto con te. 20 anni non sono un’eternità è vero, eppure moltissima acqua è passata sotto i ponti, se così si può dire. Forse ne saprai tu più di me, basta leggere i giornali: siamo sulla bocca di tutti, siamo diventati delle celebrità. Sono settimane che vedo strane facce qui, e questo un po’ mi preoccupa. Sembrano esperti, non so di cosa ma sicuramente sono esperti. Hanno dei gran fogli digitali in mano, ci puntano laser rossi addosso e prendono le misure. Continuano a farci fotografie e questo sta iniziando a darmi fastidio. Siamo diventati un caso di stato. Anzi, alcuni di noi giurano di aver sentito dire che diventeremo un micro-stato vero e proprio. Una sorta di modello da esportare. Dovrei esserne fiero e contento, lo so. D’altra parte la mia vita si è trasformata completamente grazie a questo esperimento così ben riuscito. Eppure ho timore. E se tutta questa fama ci desse alla testa?

E se tutte questi artisti che ogni anno ci riempiono le estati andassero altrove? Hai ragione, l’ansia d’abbandono va sconfitta, bisogna pensare positivo. Il futuro è ancora tutto da costruire.

PLATFORM FOR CHANGE A Farm Cultural Park Guide

To understand the revolution sparked by Farm Cultural Park in an area of extreme Southern Italy you have to steep oneself in Sicilian daily life, otherwise you can only grasp part of the work done in the past few years.

Sicily is one of the richest lands of Europe. I guess someone can turn up their nose at this statement. In support of the objections to this assertion, infinite percentages can be listed on youth unemployment or the mass exoduses that have taken place from Southern Italy over in the past century and a half.

The largely reneged promises of development and prosperity for tens of generations have spread the cynical conviction that nothing would ever change. Any initiative that strove to overturn its somnolent everyday life was suffocated by supercilious irony, even though some places have shown marked entrepreneurial grit.

Today, in my opinion, we need to focus instead on what’s happening in the South. To begin with, the wealth of its architecture, which spans from the 5th century BC through the Baroque up to the contemporary works of Alberto Burri. This observation continues in the variety of our language, which comprises in a single dialect French, Spanish and Arabic cadences. Sicily possess seven Unesco World Heritage Sites and infinite varieties of artistic craftsmanship that is unique in the world.

Today in the South, for the first time in history, we can even have access to low-cost enabling technologies to reactivate these riches. But the only obstacle to generating a new Sicilian effervescence seems to be the mentality, which pushes

more towards a hopeful expectation than an uncontrollable desire to get things going.

Farm Cultural Park has the merit of having become a place of what is possible, but the job has been long and arduous.

Everything changed in 2010. This volume amply documents the transformation of places, but what I want to dwell on is the changed mentality of the local population.

The main action carried out by Andrea and Florinda was to listen to and make Farm available in order to inspire and encourage a confrontation on ideas, through the know-how of the people who gradually frequented Sette Cortili. It might seem corny, but in this area where we talk about young people – but in their absence – it has turned out to be an unprecedented action.

Thanks to this shattering of outmoded ideas, many have been able to realize their entrepreneurial dreams without having to migrate elsewhere. Carmelo Nicotra with his Scocca Papillon, the kids from Codex, the group of citizens who joined together to restore Palazzo Cafisi by opening it up to emerging artists or small entrepreneurs who have activated dozens of b&b’s, as well as the numerous businesses in Piazza Cavour, the heart of town, where before this revolution there was just one bar that closed before dinnertime.

The community of Farm Cultural Park has created a new action that is worth more than any political gesture. It has set an example that inspires action, showing that it is possible to get things done, even in a place that seemed destined to decay, freeing ourselves from the spiral of resignation, cronyism and corruption.

Per comprendere la rivoluzione innescata da Farm Cultural Park in un territorio posto all’estremo Sud Italia bisogna immergersi nella quotidianità siciliana, altrimenti si potrebbe cogliere solo una parte del lavoro svolto in questi anni.

La Sicilia è uno dei territori più ricchi d’Europa. Immagino che qualcuno possa storcere il naso davanti a questa dichiarazione. A sostegno delle obiezioni a quanto da me affermato, possono essere elencate infinite percentuali sulla disoccupazione giovanile o sull’emigrazione che i territori del Mezzogiorno hanno subito nell’ultimo secolo.

Le promesse di sviluppo e prosperità ampiamente disattese per decine di generazioni, hanno diffuso la gattopardiana convinzione che nulla sarebbe cambiato. Ogni iniziativa che puntava a stravolgere la sonnacchiosa quotidianità veniva soffocata da distaccata ironia, nonostante alcuni territori abbiano dimostrato una spiccata indole imprenditoriale.

Oggi, a mio avviso, bisogna cambiare il punto di vista per mettere a fuoco quanto stia accadendo a Sud. Il punto di partenza della mia osservazione inizia dalla ricchezza delle architetture, che spaziano dal V secolo a.C. attraversando il periodo barocco fino alle opere contemporanee di Alberto Burri. L’osservazione continua nei suoni della varietà del nostro linguaggio che contempla, in un unico dialetto, cadenze francesi, spagnole ed arabe. La Sicilia custodisce sette patrimoni Unesco e infinite varietà di un artigianato artistico unico al mondo.

Oggi è possibile anche al Sud, per la prima volta nella storia, avere accesso a tecnologie abilitanti a basso costo per riattivare queste ricchezze ma l’unico ostacolo per generare una nuova effervescenza siciliana pare essere la mentalità,

che spinge verso un’attesa speranzosa piuttosto che ad un’incontenibile desiderio a mettersi in moto.

Farm Cultural Park ha il pregio di essere divenuta il luogo del possibile, ma il lavoro è stato lungo e tortuoso. Tutto cambia nel 2010. In questo volume è ampiamente documentata la trasformazione dei luoghi ma voglio soffermarmi sul cambiamento della mentalità della popolazione locale.

L’azione principale effettuata da Andrea e Florinda è stata quella di ascoltare e mettere a disposizione Farm per ispirare e incentivare il confronto sulle idee, attraverso le conoscenze delle persone che via via frequentavano i Sette Cortili. Potrebbe sembrare una banalità, ma in questo territorio dove si parla di giovani – ma in loro assenza – è risultata essere un’azione inedita.

Grazie a questa rottura degli schemi in molti hanno potuto realizzare il proprio sogno imprenditoriale senza dover cambiare città. Carmelo Nicotra con la sua Scocca Papillon, i ragazzi di Codex, il gruppo di cittadini che unendosi hanno recuperato Palazzo Cafisi aprendolo agli artisti emergenti o i piccoli imprenditori che hanno attivato decine di b&b nonché le numerose attività commerciali di piazza Cavour, il cuore della città, dove prima di questa rivoluzione si contava un unico bar che chiudeva prima dell’ora di cena.

La comunità di Farm Cultural Park ha realizzato un’azione inedita che vale più di qualsiasi gesto politico. Ha dato quell’esempio che traina l’azione, dimostrando che è possibile fare, anche in un posto che sembrava essere destinato all’abbandono, liberandoci dalla spirale della rassegnazione, del clientelismo e del malaffare.

Crea un polmone urbano

ow often, when returning to a city you’ve already visited, you can’t wait to go back to a place that has remained in your heart.

It may be a museum or a market, a concept store or a library, there is no universal recipe but certainly an Urban Lung is a place where you can breathe fresh, cheerful air, where it’s pleasant to be and meet wonderful people. An Urban Lung lets a city and whoever inhabits or visits it breathe, contributing to endow a fresh, contemporary identity to the city that hosts it.

When in 2008 Florinda and I decided to stay in Sicily and not to leave, we made ourselves a promise. We wouldn’t complain and feel sorry for ourselves, wouldn’t wait for someone to change our lives but would do everything in our power to improve our daily lives; we’d create a place that could be more stimulating for educating Carla and Viola and help out the place we’d decided to live in.

We decided to share everything we had: passions, time, network and all the money we had.

We dreamed of creating a contemporary Cultural and Tourist Centre which, in the space of a few years, would become the second tourist attraction of the Province of Agrigento after the Valley of the Temples.

After renovating some small buildings of the Sette Cortili, in the historic centre of Favara to host cultural activities, we began to invite

Può essere un museo o un mercato, un concept store o una biblioteca, non esiste una ricetta universale ma certamente un Polmone Urbano è un luogo in cui si respira un’aria fresca, allegra, in cui è piacevole stare e incontrare bella gente. Il Polmone Urbano fa respirare la città e chi la abita o la visita e contribuisce a dare una identità fresca e contemporanea per la città che lo ospita.

Quando nel 2008 con Florinda abbiamo deciso di restare in Sicilia e di non andare via, ci siamo fatti una promessa. Non ci saremmo lamentati e pianti addosso, non avremmo aspettato che qualcuno ci cambiasse la vita ma avremmo fatto tutto quello che era nelle nostre possibilità per migliorare il nostro quotidiano, creare un luogo che potesse essere più stimolante per l’educazione di Carla e Viola e dare una mano al territorio nel quale avevamo deciso di vivere.

Decidemmo di condividere tutto quello che avevamo: passioni, tempo, network e tutto il denaro di cui potevamo disporre. Sognammo di realizzare un Centro Culturale e turistico contemporaneo che nell’arco di qualche anno sarebbe dovuto diventare la seconda attrazione turistica della Provincia di Agrigento dopo la Valle dei Templi.

It’s been nine years since that June 25, 2010, and today Farm Cultural Park is an internationally recognized cultural institution, the city of Favara has become a small world capital of urban regeneration, and annually thousands of tourists come from all over the world.

In Sicilian it’s called “mettiti cu chiddi megghiu i tia e pizzici i spisi”: invite to collaborate with people more competent than you.

RACCONTO • Fai in modo che tutto quello che fai possa essere raccontato; oggi grazie anche ai social media comunicare è facile, efficace ed economico.

Ristrutturati alcuni piccoli edifici dei Sette Cortili, all’interno del centro storico di Favara, destinati ad attività culturali, iniziammo ad invitare artisti, architetti, designer, creativi, musicisti per fare delle esibizioni, delle performance o delle residenze per artisti. Inoltre sin da subito vennero realizzati alcuni spazi per mangiare e bere qualcosa insieme.

Sono passati nove anni da quel 25 giugno 2010, Farm Cultural Park è una Istituzione culturale riconosciuta a livello internazionale, la città di Favara è diventata una piccola Capitale mondiale della rigenerazione urbana e centinaia di migliaia di turisti arrivano annualmente da ogni parte del mondo.

In Siciliano si dice “mettiti cu chiddi megghiu i tia e pizzici i spisi”; invita a collaborare con persone più brave di te. Ricordati però che per fare un Polmone Urbano dovrai essere disponibile a metterti anche con quelli più scarsi di te e pagargli comunque le spese.

Altrove is an art experimentation project that came to light in Catanzaro, Calabria, which each summer fills the marginal, degraded areas of the city with color and vitality. International artists are invited each year to create, through their respectrive languages, a new image of the city, propose new points of view and heighten civic awareness. The technique of muralism has been chosen for its ability to act on what is already built, almost obliterating the boundaries between art and architecture. The aim of the festival is to infuse the community with the concept of beauty, but above all to demonstrate that only bold actions can bring about real socio-cultural growth.

Altrove è un progetto di sperimentazione artistica nato a Catanzaro, che ogni estate riempie di colore e di vitalità luoghi marginali e degradati della città.

Artisti internazionali vengono invitati ogni anno per creare, attraverso i loro linguaggi, una nuova immagine della città, proporre nuovi punti di vista e incrementare la coscienza civica. La tecnica del muralismo è scelta per la sua capacità di agire sul costruito rendendo quasi invisibili i confini tra arte e architettura. L’obiettivo del festival è rieducare la comunità al concetto di bellezza, ma soprattutto dimostrare che solo le azioni azzardate possono portare una reale crescita socio-culturale.

The interventions of "Le Seppie", are aimed at promoting the social and cultural development of the community, in harmony with the current resources of the territory. It is an innovative action, which aims to trace new paths to counter the social decline that affects rural areas. It facilitates and develops opportunities for discussion in the "minor villages", encouraging moments of social and cultural innovation. The project experiments a new pedagogy for all creative fields, through formal and informal learning, promoting intersections and comparisons between people of different backgrounds – international artists and professionals supported by residency programs – and involving the local community and migrants in the promotion of Calabria as an attractive land for cultural initiatives. The objective is therefore to train citizens in the values of equality, collaboration, integration and social inclusion through cultural activities dedicated to the social growth of the community, in which each person can make use of their skills and knowledge.

Gli interventi di “La rivoluzione delle Seppie”, sono volti alla promozione dello sviluppo sociale e culturale della comunità, in armonia con le attuali risorse del territorio. È un'azione innovativa che mira a tracciare nuovi percorsi per contrastare il declino sociale che colpisce le aree rurali. Facilita e sviluppa occasioni di confronto nei “villaggi minori”, incoraggiando momenti di innovazione sociale e culturale. Il progetto sperimenta una nuova pedagogia per tutti i campi creativi, attraverso l’apprendimento formale e informale, promuovendo incroci e confronti tra persone di diversi background – artisti e professionisti internazionali supportati da programmi di residenza – e coinvolgendo la comunità locale e i migranti nella promozione della Calabria come terreno attrattivo per nuove iniziative culturali. Outdoor is a festival, a project that came to light in the Ostiense district with the precise aim of transforming the social fabric of the city through cultural activities. A development that got under way with the creation of Rome’s first Street Art District. Over the years, Outdoor has contributed to urban changes in the city and worked through temporary events to reactivate sites that had fallen into disuse.

In 2014 it reopened the Former Customs Railway, offering the city a new meeting place. In 2015 it restored to citizens the area of ​​the Ex Guido Reni Barracks. The festival progam has grown over time and has been structured with diverse multidisciplinary contents, from music to art, conferences and projections. Today, through an international network of artists and producers, it presents itself as a prestigious international showcase.

Outdoor è un festival, un progetto nato nel quartiere Ostiense con l’obiettivo preciso di trasformare il tessuto sociale della città attraverso azioni culturali. Un percorso cominciato con la creazione del primo Street Art District di Roma. Outdoor negli anni ha contribuito ai cambiamenti urbanistici della città e ha lavorato attraverso azioni temporanee per riattivare luoghi in disuso. Nel 2014 ha ri-aperto l’Ex Dogana Ferroviaria, offrendo alla città un nuovo luogo di aggregazione. Nel 2015 ha restituito ai cittadini l’area dell’Ex Caserma Guido Reni. Il programma del festival nel tempo è cresciuto e si è strutturato con contenuti diversi e multidisciplinari: dalla musica all’arte, alle conferenze, alle proiezioni. Oggi, attraverso un network internazionale di artisti e produttori, si presenta come un prestigioso palcoscenico internazionale.

“What is Co-Dividuality? Japanese Architecture and the Shared House of Farm Cultural Park” is an exhibit-event curated by architects Salvator-John A. Liotta and Fabienne Louyot of the LAPS Architecture Studio in Paris. The exhibit offers an overview of share houses, investigates the vast topic of redefining public and private space in Japan and has transformed Farm Cultural Park’s art gallery into a share house for a whole year. Through a selection of the top name projects of Japanese architecture, the exhibit outlines what Salvator-John A. Liotta and Andrea Bartoli have wanted to call – retrospectively – Co-Dividual Architecture: an architecture that provides a new answer to the practice of shared living in the era of post-individualism, social media and the shared economy.

“OPP Festival” is a festival that takes place in April at Sette Cortili, designed for teenagers in the new era of the youtubers, snapchatters, tumblrers. Two intense days of creativity and experimentation attract young people from different backgrounds with a rich offering of workshops, conferences, music performances, cinema, photography, design, architecture, urban art, social innovation, dance, comics, radio, fashion, illustration, tattoo, food and even sports. There’s an unpleasant rhetoric that tells of young people without interests, stimuli, passions; uninterested in anything related to society, politics, the future. It’s not true at all. There are many young people involved, enthusiastic, full of ideas and common sense but often lacking the words and a chance. “OPP Festival”, through the magic of creativity, inspires young people to the values of freedom, equality, justice and the recognition of architectural, artistic and human beauty. “OPP” is the diminutive of Opportunity: young people need skills, knowledge and trust that enable them to express themselves and increase their participation in issues concerning “the public sphere”.

I returned to Berlin, where I’d been visiting at the age of 18, as payment for the work done with the artist Adrian Hermanides in Palermo. At first I worked in a gallery where I met artists like Dara Friedman, James Hoff, Niels Trannois and many others. In Berlin it’s easy to build a close network of friendships in the arts, find interesting jobs and start up independent projects. Germany takes care of its artists. In 2018 alone the government allocated 15 million euros to finance projects at the Hauptstadtkulturfonds.

Every year hundreds of artists, galleries, associations, museums, curators and publishers have access to a minimum fund of 1.1 million euros of support, through scholarships, exhibit projects or grants for publication. The Kulturwerk des BBK Berlin office also offers advice to foreign artists who want to start careers in Berlin.

During the interviews, the consultants offer their support, answer the most important questions, explain how to become a professional artist and help artists get their bearings around town.

Sono ritornato a Berlino, dove ero già stato in visita a 18 anni, come ricompensa del lavoro svolto con l’artista Adrian Hermanides a Palermo. All’inizio lavoravo in una galleria dove ho conosciuto artisti come Dara Friedman, James Hoff, Niels Trannois e tanti altri. A Berlino è facile costruire una fitta rete di amicizie in ambito artistico, trovare lavori interessanti e intraprendere progetti indipendenti. La Germania si prende cura degli artisti. Solo nel 2018, il governo ha fornito 15 milioni di euro per il finanziamento di progetti al Hauptstadtkulturfonds.

Ogni anno centinaia di artisti, gallerie, associazioni, musei, curatori ed editori accedono ad un fondo minimo di 1.1 milioni di euro a sostegno, attraverso borse di studio, progetti espositivi o sovvenzioni per la pubblicazione. L’ufficio Kulturwerk des BBK Berlin offre inoltre consulenza agli artisti esteri che vogliono iniziare la loro carriera a Berlino; durante i colloqui, i consulenti offrono il loro supporto, rispondono alle domande più importanti, spiegano come diventare artista professionista e aiutano gli artisti ad orientarsi nella città.

What is the world’s populous city? What is the Expo which sets record with 73 milion visitors? Where is the most extensive metro system and the world’s largest port for cargo? What is the fastest passenger train? What is the metropolis that during the World War II hosted 20.000 jews without conditions?

Shanghai seems to be a record-breaking metropolis and maybe the icon of the growth of China. After the economic growth due to China’s reform and opening-up, the country is setting gaze towards cultural consumption in order to diversify its economy. The Shanghai Expo of 2010 is seen as a major step towards the city’s cultural development. Pudong is the district which housed the Expo. It was mainly farmland 40 years ago. Here is a new high-score of the city: the PSA-Power Station of Art, it is the first state-run museum of contemporary art. The change of former productive sites into cultural ones is witnessed by three Atelier Deshaus’ projects (Silo of 80.000 tons, Long Museum West Bund, Modern Art Musuem) and also by M50. In the east bank of the river «China is more open to new architecture than risk-averse UK» as Will Alsop said about the Gao Yang project.

Qual è la città più popolosa al mondo? Qual è l’Expo che ha raggiunto il record di 73 mln di visitatori? Dov’è la metro più estesa e il porto cargo più grande del mondo? Qual è il treno passeggeri più veloce al mondo? Qual è la città che durante la Seconda Guerra Mondiale ospitò 20.000 ebrei senza alcuna condizione?

Shanghai sembra essere la città dei record e forse anche l’icona della crescita cinese.

Dopo la crescita economica, dovuta alla riforma e all’apertura della Cina, il paese sta volgendo il suo sguardo all’industria culturale per diversificare la sua economia. L’Expo del 2010 è stato il passo più grande verso lo sviluppo culturale della città. Pudong, il distretto che ha ospitato l’evento, quarant'anni fa era campagna. Qui si trova un altro record di Shanghai: la PSA-Power Station of Art che è il primo museo statale dedicato all’arte contemporanea. La trasformazione di ex spazi produttivi in musei è testimoniata da tre progetti dell'Atelier Deshaus (Silo of 80.000 tons, Long Museum West Bund, Modern Art Museum), ma anche dal M50.

Nella parte est del lungo fiume «la Cina è più aperta alla nuova architettura rispetto all’Inghilterra, che evita ogni rischio» così come dice Will Alsop sul progetto Gao Yang.

earning to read messages without prejudging them and making dispassionate observations is an exercise that requires careful work and constant commitment. This has become even more crucial today than in the summer of 1968, when a group of Yale students found themselves in the heart of Sin City, led by professors Robert Venturi and Denise Scott Brown, to discern the new features of the city, in a place without a past, where the simulacra of modernity, still in low definition, communicated their meaning and purpose directly through the elementary, archaic language of symbols and images.

Las Vegas was growing by overlapping heaps, without any plan. Among the mass of fixed and flashing signs and brightly coloured façades, they recognized the motifs for a way of understanding "forgotten" architecture throughout the modernist era: «a landscape of symbols in space rather than forms in space», a redress of the iconographic dimension against the abstract and mute forms of the epigones of the International style1.

Nel sistema delle insegne, dei segnali lampeggianti, delle facciate luminose e colorate si riconoscevano i motivi di un modo di intendere l'architettura "dimenticato" lungo tutta la stagione modernista: «un paesaggio di simboli nello spazio piuttosto che di forme nello spazio», una rivincita della dimensione iconografica contro le forme astratte e mute degli epigoni dello stile internazionale1.

The Las Vegas strip, with its communication models, is a form of absolute storytelling whose narration of facts coincides with reality. Signs are summary icons of the features of a universal language and the idea that already took shape in the thought of Leibniz and his effort to invent a philosophical language in which: «A universal character could be introduced [...] if tiny figures were used instead of words [...] This would serve primarily to easily communicate with distant nations, but if we introduce it also among ourselves, without however abandoning ordinary writing, employing such a means of writing would be of great utility to enrich the imagination and make our thoughts less deaf and less verbal than those we have now»2. This idea of summarizing a sequence of words into signs and strokes is present throughout art history. As Bourriaud stated, over time works of art «were characterized a priori by their symbolic accessibility»: first «art aimed at stabilizing relationships between humanity and divinity [...] Little by little, art has abandoned this function, to explore the relationships between people and the world», so that today «artistic practice focuses on the sphere of interpersonal relationships»3 through «models of social participation» that transform the observer into a direct interlocutor.

La strip di Las Vegas, con i suoi modelli di comunicazione, è una forma di storytelling assoluto in cui il racconto dei fatti coincide con la realtà. L’insegna è l’icona di sintesi dei caratteri del linguaggio universale e di quell’idea che prende già forma con il pensiero di Leibniz e con la sua ambizione di costituzione di una lingua philosophica secondo la quale: «Si potrebbe introdurre un carattere universale […] se si impiegassero piccole figure al posto delle parole […] Ciò servirebbe in primo luogo per comunicare facilmente con le nazioni lontane, ma se lo si introduce anche tra di noi, senza rinunciare tuttavia alla scrittura ordinaria, l’impiego di una tale maniera di scrivere sarebbe di grande utilità per arricchire l’immaginazione e per far sì che i nostri pensieri fossero meno sordi e meno verbali di quelli che si hanno adesso»2. Questo teorema sulla contrazione di una sequenza di parole in segni e tratti attraversa tutta la storia dell’arte. Come afferma Bourriaud nel corso del tempo le opere «si caratterizzavano a priori per la loro disponibilità simbolica»: dapprima «l’arte puntava a stabile relazioni tra l’umanità e la divinità […] Poco a poco, l’arte ha abbandonato quest’ambizione, per esplorare le relazioni fra gli uomini e il mondo», oggi «la pratica artistica si concentra sulla sfera delle relazioni interpersonali» attraverso «modelli di partecipazione sociale»3 che trasformano l’osservatore in

This coinciding and overlapping of figures in the very mechanism of the story can be found in Dan Graham’s “Present continuous past(s)” (1974), where the movements of visitors filmed by a hidden camera were televised throughout the exhibit itself, with a slightly deferred shift in time. This kind of operation differs from simple narration because it starts on the assumption of reaching a communication objective that isn’t limited to narrating a chronology of events; rather, it’s an action that utilizes the principles of storytelling to lead users to feel the story as their own, and by so doing the message breaks through all barriers to become a personal narrative of the viewer.

In such storytelling the concepts of time and space are completely revolutionized and come very close to those of Bauman’s “Liquid Modernity”, in which the former is characterized by an eternal present, while the latter, thanks to globalization and the influence of digital technologies, has become more limited, contributing to the intertwining of “global and local”4 dimensions.

Nello storytelling i concetti di tempo e spazio sono completamente rivoluzionati e molto aderenti a quelli della “Modernità liquida” di Bauman, in cui il primo è caratterizzato da un eterno presente, mentre il secondo, complice la globalizzazione e l’influenza delle tecnologie digitali, si è fatto più ristretto, contribuendo all’intrecciarsi delle dimensioni “globali e locali”4.

Local actions, often with definite planetary impact, conveyed by a form of communication based on transparency and simplicity of message. On all occasions, Farm represents a guide for any city that’s going through a moment of depression; an elementary, concrete model that acts on culture and its community for a greater awareness that suffices to convince people that dreams really do come true.

15. Mostra Internazionale di Architettura. La Biennale di Venezia 2016

On the occasion of the XV Mostra Internazionale di Architettura.

La Biennale di Venezia, Farm Cultural Park made its presence felt during three important events that have consolidated its role within the national and international panorama of cultural and social politics. Farm’s experience was narrated in “TAKING CARE – designing for the common good” theme addressed

by Tamassociati in the Italian Pavilion, showing the realities at work in difficult conditions to improve the quality of the life, favoring the collective good over individual interest. Farm participated in the Gangcity project, organized by DIST of the Politecnico di Torino, which, within the Thetis space, documented the phenomenon of urban clusters deprived of any enforced legality, to activate processes of reappropriation and care of private and public spaces. It also edited “MOVE! Do something. People and places that are changing the world” with Maurizio Carta (University of Palermo), a story about the people and places that are changing the world and an incitement to activism and the creation of new cultural centres, a project exhibited within BIAS, curated by WISH (World International Sicilian Heritage) at Palazzo Donà delle Rose.

In occasione della XV Mostra Internazionale di Architettura. La Biennale di Venezia, Farm Cultural Park ha fatto sentire la sua presenza durante tre appuntamenti importanti che ne hanno consolidato il ruolo all’interno del panorama nazionale ed internazionale delle politiche culturali e sociali. L’esperienza di Farm è stata raccontata all’interno di “TAKING CARE – progettare per il bene comune”, tema affrontato da Tamassociati all’interno del Padiglione Italia, in cui sono state mostrate le realtà che lavorano in condizioni difficili per migliorare la qualità della vita, privilegiando il bene collettivo sull’interesse individuale. Farm ha partecipato al progetto Gangcity, a cura del DIST del Politecnico di Torino che, all’interno dello spazio Thetis, documenta il fenomeno dei cluster urbani sottratti a ogni forma di controllo della legalità, al fine di attivare processi di riappropriazione e di cura degli spazi privati e pubblici. E ha inoltre curato “MOVE! Do something.

People and places that are changing the world” con Maurizio Carta (UniPa), un racconto sulle persone e i luoghi che stanno cambiando il mondo e un’incitazione all’attivismo e alla creazione di nuovi centri culturali, progetto esposto all’interno di BIAS, a cura di WISH (World International Sicilian Heritage) a Palazzo Donà delle Rose.

An art project by which Giuseppe Guarneri and Giuseppe Sinaguglia have extended the cultural change that began in Sicily. These two Farm ambassadors have brought the Happiness Flag around the world, as a symbol for those who still want to dream of a better world. Thousands of photographs fueled Farm’s Facebook page. The project was supported by micro donations given in exchange for a flag and a photograph.

Un progetto artistico attraverso il quale Giuseppe Guarneri e Giuseppe Sinaguglia hanno diffuso il cambiamento culturale avviato in Sicilia. I due ambasciatori di Farm hanno portato in giro per il mondo la Happiness Flag, come simbolo di chi ha ancora voglia di sognare un mondo migliore. Migliaia di scatti fotografici hanno alimentato per molto tempo la pagina Facebook di Farm. Il progetto è stato sostenuto dalle micro donazioni date in cambio di una bandierina e di una fotografia.

Celebrate FARM

Curry Stone Design Prize 2017

Since 2010, Farm Cultural Park’s birthday celebrates in Favara on the last saturday of june; inside the Seven Courtyards and around the town, to honour the anniversary of its foundation. For Farm, this is the loveliest day of the year, because exceptional people come from all over the world, bringing joy and enthusiasm. Art, architecture, food, music, dance envelop everything in a magical atmosphere. For the occasion, Farm renews its spaces, inaugurating new exhibitions and installations.

Il compleanno di Farm Cultural Park si celebra l’ultimo sabato del mese di giugno; dal 2010 nei Sette Cortili e in giro per Favara, si festeggia l’anniversario della sua fondazione. Per Farm, questo è il giorno più bello dell’anno, perché da ogni parte del mondo arrivano persone eccezionali che portano piacere e entusiasmo. Arte, architettura, cucina, musica, danza avvolgono tutti in un’atmosfera magica; per l’occasione Farm rinnova i suoi spazi, inaugurando nuove mostre e allestimenti.

Curry Stone Foundation (CSF) is a non-profit organization founded in Oregon by the architect-town planner and developer Clifford Curry, FAIA, and the renowned archaeologist Dr. Delight Stone, RPA. It offers support to people involved in innovative projects for constructing healthier communities.

The goal is to heighten the impact of creators on the community by supporting the development of visionary approaches. In 2017 the Curry Stone Design Prize was awarded to Farm Cultural Park, giving it an honourable mention for the important role it has played in creating a community that has made art and public space its central mission: «Farm Cultural Park has succeeded in attracting some of the best italian and world artists and allowing them to exhibit their works in a small town».

Curry Stone Foundation (CSF) è un'associazione no-profit fondata in Oregon dall’architetto-urbanista e sviluppatore Clifford Curry, FAIA, e dallo storico archeologo dr. Delight Stone, RPA. Offre supporto a soggetti impegnati in progetti innovativi per la costruzione di comunità più sane.

L’obiettivo è quello di aumentare l’impatto dei creativi sulla comunità sostenendo lo sviluppo di approcci visionari.

Nel 2017 il Curry Stone Design Prize ha premiato Farm Cultural Park con una menzione d’onore per l’importanza che ha rivestito nella creazione di una comunità che ha fatto dell’arte e dello spazio pubblico il suo punto di forza: «Farm Cultural Park è riuscita ad attirare alcuni dei migliori artisti italiani e del mondo e a far loro esporre i loro lavori in una piccola città».

FARM AS INTERFACE • FARM COME INTERFACCIA

arrived at Farm almost from sheer exhaustion, the result of repeated invitations from friends who had already visited it before me. In my mind, I kept telling myself: what could a designer who works in the field of innovation have to do with a place like this?

It was 2012, and I would never have imagined that a part of me would never leave. For several years I felt the need to return all the weekends available despite the almost 200 km that separated Favara from Catania, the city where I was living. Today I live in Milan and, unfortunately, it isn’t so easy, but that experience has completely permeated my way of living and especially my work.

Farm for me today isn’t just a beacon of good practices but an approach that has conditioned everything I do.

Among those courtyards I realized that “Changing one’s own little piece of the world” is

possible and I repeat this truth every day, almost like a mantra.

But what does it mean to change your own little piece of the world? Precisely from this question a nagging thought was born which then became an idea which, in turn, evolved very soon into real research.

A research that prodded me to deepen my skills by adding sociology studies to those of designers and that sees more resources involved in both Meedori and Pnsix.

Projects like Favara’s invade not only aspects related to the world of the dissemination of culture but have disruptive impacts in the field of urbanism and especially the social fabric, and this is why I always find it difficult to explain what Far really is, because it has some very strong and incisive primary and secondary fallouts.

In other words: Farm is a bunch of things.

I’ll try to summarize. When, as in the case of Favara, you steal a small piece of space from time and negligence and can

fill it with cultural content, you aren’t just filling a void but are grafting a new layer, an active layer, onto the city itself.

The basis of our research is that a city is made up of an unfinished set of layers which in turn generate real subcultures. This same genesis happens for any other action that interacts on the way of experiencing a space and its contents, and for this reason it can be associated with the concept of subculture.

To be clear, in the 1980s there came onto the market an object that is almost forgotten today – except by nostalgic individuals like myself – but that created a great cultural revolution: the walkman.

As happened later with video games and more recently with smartphones, the Walkman appeared to represented a desire to isolate oneself from one’s surroundings and, especially while on the move, one isolated oneself from the city. With the headphones over their ears, people could create

their own soundtrack that was also defined by some as Citizen Soundscape.

Actually, like any almost iconoclastic tendency, this way of experiencing society generates from separation a group, a sense of belonging.

The 1980s was a period in which the urban tribes got started (remember the paninari?) and the public organized itself. Portable technology is starting a real process of alteration of the public space.

Now let’s take another example: in computer science, two complex systems, each made for specific purposes, can dialogue with each other through interfaces.

Interfaces allow, through shared protocols, these tools to understand each other and work together.

You are wondering: what do walkman and computers have to do with Farm?

The thinking behind our research is very simple. An urban tribe is a subculture, a more or less complex group of people. These groups live together in the same space. No one wishes that they will be normalized and led to adopt a single way of thinking, but rather that they communicate effectively to become in some way synergistic.

To allow the systems to dialogue and obtain results, an interface was needed, something that would not be rejected and would be recognized by all the systems.

What was needed therefore was a binder, and it was illuminating to reread a phrase from a 1994 essay by my designer friend Giovanni Anceschi on the topic of the coordinated image of the city. I’ll try to quote: The coordinated image of the city must be «an etiquette, a style of

behaviour of the city towards its citizens».

The city. This was the interface between the various social subcultures, one of the few elements that, in one way or another, would be accepted and recognized by everyone.

Within the seven courtyards the “City as Interface” project was born, a project that went beyond the various Smart City concepts because it had nothing to do with technology and sustainability but everything to do with the social structure of those who live in the city, visit or cross it.

Farm in all this was certainly a forerunner, a small laboratory that, starting from its language and its “pop” label, has managed to act as a binder between different subcultures.

Its cultural approach has always facilitated and invited interactions between different urban layers by placing at the bottom line all the respect and accessibility of its contents (first seen as meant for a certain elite) and ennobling that “pop” term which was almost becoming offensive and denigrating.

Farm’s communication itself works by virtue of its inclusiveness, which is represented by its essential, emotional, excited and enthusiastic language. It doesn’t talk of what it will be but of what it is now and it does so in total continuity with physical space, without betraying any expectation.

We often talk about Farm as a place of possibility. I continue to argue that projects such as Farm are spaces of access, junctions of the city’s cultural layers, places of contamination and comparison. For this reason, often, to the question “Can a Farm be created in another city?” I answer with a dry and decisive no. Farm,

as we know it, can only be in Favara, but this doesn’t mean that this can’t be a model, a platform on which to build new interfaces for intercommunicating between the layers of other cities.

Moreover, in my view, as for all complex platforms, we can’t think of implementing just one little piece because it wouldn’t work in the same way. Farm is a set of components that together create something that’s bigger than its individual parts: a pure holistic model.

convinced that we’re facing a great urban metamorphosis and the birth of the first forms of a re-cyclical urbanism, based on the recycling of areas, infrastructures, landscapes and on a planned post-obsolescence that sets the conditions for their continuous reuse. In the transition from our erosive Paleoanthropocene that consumes resources, opportunities and talents, to a Neoantropocene that is generative and sensitive to values and identities, a new urban approach is needed that can respond to the metamorphosis of the traditional urban model based on density, centrality and identity of the urban form, towards forms of living and working in more suburban and urban environments, more vegetable than stone, more reticular than confined, more productive than consuming. And Detroit is the first city of the Neo-anthropocene era, the prototype of a city that burns and is reborn from its ashes, indeed that "recycles its ashes".

It’s hard to describe what Farm is.

“I could imagine anything except finding a place like this in Favara”. This is one of the most often heard statements of guests and travellers who visit Farm Cultural Park for the first time. Probably because, despite having their curiosity piqued by the media or the stories they’ve heard, they always arrive somewhat sceptical in Favara. “But what can there possibly be in this Farm that I haven’t seen somewhere else in the world?”. Certainly also because, on entering the town of Favara, you’re greeted by a certain urban clutter that underscores the element of surprise and wonder as soon as you get a look at Cortile Bentivegna, also known as Sette Cortili (Seven Courtyards), the Farm’s headquarters. FARM is family place. Florinda, Andrea, their kids Viola and Carla, the Farm Cultural Park staff, and the artists in residence (the aunts of Sette Cortili) welcome you as if Farm were a home, their home. A simple, informal reception, without frills or labels. At Farm you immediately feel at home, no matter if you’re a kid or a grownup, how you’re dressed, whether you’re straight or gay, what religion you profess (or not), or where you’re from. Farm is for everyone. It’s a place that runs at different speeds. It’s stimulating, dynamic, full of people and activities, on all summer evenings, every night, not to mention its birthday party. Farm, however, is also a refuge, a place of reflection, a small oasis in which to rest, stop, take time for yourself and others, in the morning or early afternoon. In any case, Farm is a safe place, where you feel protected. The size of Sette Cortili drags you into a city

Si fa fatica a descrivere cos’è Farm. “Tutto potevo immaginare che trovare a Favara un luogo così”. Questa è una delle frasi più ricorrenti di ospiti e viaggiatori che visitano per la prima volta Farm Cultural Park. Probabilmente perché nonostante si sia attratti dalla curiosità generata dai media o dai racconti ricevuti, comunque si arriva a Favara sempre con un pizzico di pregiudizio. “Ma cosa ci sarai mai in questa Farm che non ho già visto da qualche altra parte del mondo?”. Certamente anche perché entrando nella città di Favara si viene accolti da un certo disordine urbanistico che enfatizza l’esperienza di sorpresa e meraviglia non appena ci si affaccia nel Cortile Bentivegna, noto anche come i Sette Cortili, quartier generale di Farm. FARM è luogo familiare, Florinda, Andrea, i loro cuccioli Viola, Carla, lo staff di Farm Cultural Park, gli artisti in residenza, le zie dei Sette Cortili, ti accolgono come se Farm fosse una casa, casa loro. Un’accoglienza semplice, informale, senza fronzoli o etichette.

In Farm, ti senti subito a tuo agio, a casa tua, non importa se sei giovane o adulto, come sei vestito, se sei etero o meno, quale religione professi o da dove vieni. Farm è per tutti. È un luogo a diverse velocità. È frizzante, dinamico, pieno di gente e attività, in estate la sera, tutte le sere, per non parlare della festa di compleanno. Farm, però, è anche un rifugio, un luogo di riflessione, una piccola oasi in cui riposare, sostare, prendersi del tempo per se e per gli altri, nelle ore mattutine o nel primo pomeriggio. On July 24, 2017 two installations realized within Sette Cortili, Equilatera and Butterfly home, were declared unauthorized by the Favara Municipal Technical Office, through an ordinance requiring “the dismantling and remounting of the places within 90 days”. The ordinance came about from delays in adopting measures for which months before permits and security clearance, complex bureaucratic procedures and non-linear communications

were regularly requested.

The promise to revocate the order, obtained after a timely meeting with the technicians and the town administration, was denied on August 5th, the day on which the seals were placed on the installations.

In the meantime, a general mobilization began on the web. Groups of intellectuals, universities, collectives, photographers, architects, artists and friends organized a petition to support Farm Cultural Park, with the

hashtag #wearefarm, showing their solidarity in this absurd, paradoxical affair. On August 15, 2017, the Public Prosecutor of Agrigento resolved the case positively, bringing this incredible experience to an end. The seizure order was declared invalid, as there was deemed to be a “lack of commission of offense”.

Il 24 luglio del 2017 due installazioni realizzate all’interno dei Sette Cortili, Equilatera e Butterfly home, vengono dichiarate abusive da parte dell’Ufficio tecnico comunale di Favara, attraverso un’ordinanza che richiede “lo smantellamento e la rimessa in pristino dei luoghi entro 90 giorni”.

L’ordinanza è la conseguenza di ritardi nell’adozione di provvedimenti, per cui sono stati regolarmente richiesti, mesi prima, nulla osta e

permessi, ed iter burocratici complessi e comunicazioni non lineari. La promessa della revoca dell’ordinanza, ottenuta dopo un tempestivo incontro con i tecnici e l’amministrazione comunale, viene smentita il 5 agosto, giorno in cui vengono posti i sigilli sulle installazioni.

Nel frattempo, attraverso il web, prende avvio una mobilitazione generale; gruppi di intellettuali, università, collettivi, fotografi, architetti, artisti

e amici organizzano una petizione a supporto di Farm Cultural Park, con l’hashtag #wearefarm, mostrando la loro solidarietà in questa assurda e paradossale vicenda. Il 15 agosto 2017 la Procura della Repubblica di Agrigento risolve il caso, chiudendo positivamente questa incredibile esperienza. Il provvedimento di sequestro è stato dichiarato nullo, essendo stata rilevata la “mancanza di commissione di reato”.
