Iuav Abroad è un network di Alumni Iuav che lavorano all’estero in ambito accademico e professionale. Nel 2016 si è svolto il primo meeting che ha consentito di identificare alcune parole chiave che accomunano gli Alumni all’estero. Tre parole fondative: radici, metodo, esperienza.

Iuav method | metodo Un metodo Iuav di gestire saperi complessi declinato nella apertura e flessibilità della cultura della interpretazione, la capacità di analizzare e leggere situazioni urbane complesse, un metodo di pensiero stratificato in ragione della trasmissione di un sapere, l’idea di una responsabilità analitica ed etica nello studio. Iuav experience | esperienza Iuav è un luogo di incontro di saperi che vive di un processo di osmosi con Venezia, fa eco all’esperienza di Marco Polo raccontata nelle Città Invisibili: esportare un metodo, vivere la riconoscibilità di una comunità che condivide gli stessi riferimenti e maestri, parlare un lessico comune in uno scenario internazionale. Il legame di Iuav con Venezia è sedimentato dall’attraversamento quotidiano della città per raggiungere le sedi, una dimensione universitaria diffusa, una rete Iuav per Venezia. Esperienze Iuav Abroad | le Reunion Tali premesse consentono di individuare uno status, quello di Alumni Iuav all’estero, contratto nella formula “Iuav Abroad”, che esplicita l’idea di una rete di ambasciatori di Iuav nel mondo, la cui identità è riconducibile alle tre parole fondative – radici, metodo, esperienza. La rete nasce laddove esse sono trasmissibili come un ponte – metafora e elemento architettonico che meglio identifica Venezia – tra realtà diverse che si muovono da Iuav/a Iuav, attraverso geografie e continenti. Per queste ragioni l’immagine rappresentativa di Iuav Abroad è una mappa che tratteggia i ponti di attraversamento da Venezia verso il mondo, in una prospettiva di sperimentazione sempre più forte, tesa a condurre esperienze trasversali di interdisciplinarietà, 12

internazionalizzazione e inter settorializzazione in ambito accademico e professionale. Due profili distinti, Iuav Academics Abroad e Iuav Professionals Abroad, identificano la vasta gamma che attraversa il trasmettere pensiero verso il trasmettere linguaggi progettuali e viceversa. Tentando un approccio sistematico alla rete, è stato spontaneo chiedersi come questo universo di relazioni e il riconoscimento in un metodo e forme di saperi potevano avere elementi comuni di approfondimento e se contestualmente potevano essere letti in orizzonti tematici e operativi. Sono emerse così altre parole chiave, quasi parole manifesto, quali: paesaggio, heritage, acqua, città storica, mura urbane, turismo, flussi migratori, riuso, built-environment, geografie della cultura. È stato individuato un programma di studio e analisi su cui confrontarsi a scala globale con un linguaggio comune ma trasversale, iniziato nel 2018 con i temi legati all’heritage e al paesaggio, e nel 2019 evoluto nel tema della città. Questo volume raccoglie una sintesi degli interventi presentati nell’ultima reunion Iuav Academics Abroad di marzo 2019. La formula proposta per il meeting era aperta allo scambio di idee, con un momento iniziale destinato ad incentivare il networking e pianificare specifiche attività di collaborazione e una seconda parte dedicata alle short lectures degli Iuav Academics Abroad. In particolare essi sono stati invitati a riflettere su due domande: Quali sono gli strumenti ancora attuali di lettura per la città? Venezia è ancora un riferimento? L’intento è stato coniugare l’esperienza quotidiana della Emanuela Sorbo, Elisa Brusegan

città abroad in cui gli Alumni operano con una lettura metodologica di matrice Iuav. Una lettura, potenzialmente legata a Venezia nel suo essere una città in bilico tra esperienza premoderna e visione contemporanea, documentata nelle prime pagine di questo volume, attraverso delle immagini di Iuav per Venezia. I contributi proposti istituiscono un legame tra l’Università Iuav - che ha contribuito in diverso modo alla formazione degli autori - e il luogo in cui essi si trovano ad operare. Lo fanno in maniera libera, attraverso una riflessione breve, una visione fulminea che istituisce un sottile filo rosso tra la scuola veneziana e le personali esperienze all’estero. Alcuni descrivono i fenomeni urbani in corso esprimendo una critica, tracciando rimandi e parallelismi con Venezia, alludendo al ruolo che l’Università Iuav ha o potrebbe avere nella loro indagine. Altri si interrogano sugli strumenti di lettura della città contemporanea e raccontano come il proprio bagaglio culturale abbia trovato espressione all’estero attraverso alcune specifiche esperienze accademiche. Altri infine individuano nella ricerca ossessiva di bellezza ed eccellenza il lascito dell’esperienza veneziana. Ogni lettura proviene da diversi continenti, spostando continuamente il punto di vista dalle Americhe, all’Africa, passando per il Medio Oriente, la Cina e l’Australia. L’obiettivo è rendere conto dell’estensione geografica del network Iuav Abroad e raccogliere testimonianze eterogenee legate allo specifico ambito operativo dell’accademia. In una visione ideale in cui i colleghi Iuav Academics Abroad rappresentano messaggeri, “ambasciatori Iuav” dal/nel mondo. Per tale ragione questo libro, nelle pagine che seguono, è esso stesso una “città invisibile”, un racconto “altro” di ogni città vista con le lenti di Venezia. 14

In 2016, the first meeting took place, which allowed us to identify some keywords that former-students now abroad could share. Three founding words are: roots, method, experience. A short identity dictionary Iuav roots | Iuav radici A constellation of knowledge linked to specific personalities and themes: the militant criticism of Manfredo Tafuri, the analysis of the city by Aldo Rossi, the architectural typology by Saverio Muratori, the tradition in/of the landscape by Bernardo Secchi (just to name a few). Iuav method | Iuav metodo A capability to manage sophisticated knowledge that is expressed in the openness and flexibility of the culture of interpretation, the ability to analyze and understand complex urban situations, a stratified thinking based on the transmission of knowledge, the idea of an analytical and ethical responsibility in research. Iuav experience | Esperienza Iuav Iuav is a place for the exchange of knowledge, it lives a process of osmosis with Venice, echoing Marco Polo’s experience told in the Invisible Cities. The strength of a method, living the recognizability of a community that shares the same references and “maestri”, speaking a common lexicon in an international scenario. The link between Iuav and Venice is strengthened by the university daily life, a widespread layer over the city, a Iuav web for Venice. Experiencing Iuav Abroad | Reunions These premises introduce the identification of a status, that of Alumni Iuav abroad, summarized in the formula “Iuav Abroad”. A name to explain the idea of a network of Iuav ambassadors in the world, whose identity call back the founding words – roots, method and experience – explored before. The network takes place where those elements can be transmitted as a bridge – a metaphor and an architectural element that best identifies Venice – between different realities that move from Iuav / to Iuav through geographies and continents. For these reasons, the representative image of Iuav Abroad is a map that outlines the bridges from Venice to the world, in a perspective of increasingly strong experimentation, aimed at conducting 16

transversal experiences of interdisciplinarity, internationalization and intersectorialisation in the academic and professional field. Two distinct profiles, Iuav Academics Abroad and Iuav Professionals Abroad, identify the vast range that goes through the transfer of thinking and that of design languages and vice versa. By attempting a systematic approach to the network, it was spontaneous to ask how this universe of relationships and acknowledgements in a method could have common elements of investigation and if, at the same time, could be read in a thematic and operative horizons. Other keywords have emerged, like manifesto words, such as: landscape, heritage, water, historical city, city walls, tourism, migration flows, reuse, built-environment, cultural geographies. These words identify the aim of a study and a research program, they are topics to discuss on a global scale with a common but transversal language. The first thematic meeting started in 2018 with two first topics heritage and landscape, in 2019 the main topic was “the city”. This publication contains a summary of the lectures presented at the last Iuav Academics Abroad Reunion of March 2019. The formula proposed for the meeting fostered the exchange of ideas and experiences in the field of research, education and practise. It started with an opening moment intended to encourage networking and to plan specific collaboration activities between universities; it continued with a second part dedicated to the short lectures by Iuav Academics Abroad. In particular, they were asked to reflect on two questions: What are the current tools for analysis of the city? Is Venice still a reference? The purpose was to combine the daily experience of the city abroad in which the Alumni work with a Iuav methodological reading of the phenomena experienced. An analysis potentially linked to Venice in its being a city poised between a premodern experience and a contemporary vision, displayed in the following pages of this book as images of Iuav for Venice. The lectures established a link between Iuav University - which is involved in different ways to the authors’ education - and the place where they currently operate. They have done it through a brief lecture, a sharp vision that establishes a thin red line between the Venetian school and the personal experiences abroad. Some described the ongoing urban phenomena expressing a critique, tracing references and parallels with Venice and suggesting the role that the University has or could have in their study. Others examined the tools for reading the contemporary city and explain how some academic experiences made abroad have given expression to their cultural background. Others identified the legacy of the Venetian experience in the obsessive search for beauty and excellence. The proposed reflections come from different continents, continually shifting the point of view from the Americas to Africa, passing through the Middle East, China and Australia. The objective is to report the geographical extension of the Iuav Abroad network and to collect heterogeneous testimonies related to the 18

specific operating area of the Academy. It is an ideal vision where Iuav Academics Abroad colleagues represent messengers, “Iuav ambassadors” from/in the world. As a result, this book, in the following pages, is itself an “invisible city”, a story of any city seen with the lenses of Venice.

Venezia sarà, sempre più, un osservatorio privilegiato per guardare allo sviluppo futuro delle città. L’affermazione può apparire provocatoria o eccessiva, la città lagunare, infatti, è sotto i riflettori più per i rischi che corre – le grandi navi, un turismo soffocante, lo spopolamento, l’acqua alta – che per i vantaggi che offre. Inoltre, la sua bellezza è talmente superiore a qualsiasi altro luogo da farla considerare un fatto unico e irripetibile, così come il suo rapporto straordinario con la laguna. Entrambe le cose portano pericolosamente a vedere il suo avvenire più nella forma del museo o del parco tematico che in quella del modello vivo ed esportabile. Eppure Venezia è una città viva e contemporanea a tutti gli effetti, e della città possiede, ancora, tutte le caratteristiche: molteplicità di attività, di simboli, di abitanti. La sua storia l’ha portata a misurarsi con molti temi che hanno lasciato testimonianza di sé nella sua forma complessiva e nel suo modo di organizzarsi; consideriamone alcuni: Venezia è una città cosmopolita, multiculturale e accogliente, lo è sempre stata sin da quando le sue relazioni coprivano gran parte del mondo conosciuto. Venezia è una città sostenibile, ha una dimensione compatibile con quella umana, al suo interno ci si sposta a piedi o via acqua ed è priva di periferia. Venezia è una città sicura. Venezia è da sempre resiliente, nel modo di costruire le sue case o di adeguare la sua forma complessiva al suolo e all’acqua su cui sorge. Venezia è una città silenziosa e, oggi, poco inquinata (grandi navi a parte). Venezia ha un rapporto con il paesaggio ancora stretto dal momento che in esso risiede la ragione della sua stessa esistenza. Venezia ha saputo tenere vivo il suo passato e conviverci quotidianamente. Venezia presenta al suo interno una articolazione di spazi pubblici che favorisce il welfare e il senso di comunità. Su questi temi Venezia ha maturato un’esperienza vastissima e le risposte che ha fornito corrispondono a molto di ciò che gli abitanti delle città del mondo lottano per ottenere: pedonalizzazioni, trasporti alternativi, dimensioni contenute dei nuclei urbani, sostenibilità e resilienza degli edifici, benessere sociale, ecc. Anche per questo Venezia torna ad essere un modello perseguibile in un momento in cui gli strumenti immaginati per il controllo della città contemporanea denunciano la loro insufficienza. E come modello potrebbe essere fatta percepire anche ai milioni di turisti che ogni anno la visitano senza pensare che molte delle esperienze che vivono per una breve vacanza potrebbero essere, con i dovuti adeguamenti, riprodotte anche nei loro luoghi di provenienza. A Venezia, infine, e qui mi riferisco in modo più specifico alla nostra Università, sono state elaborate teorie e metodi di indagine rivolti a comprendere lo sviluppo urbano a partire dai suoi aspetti più tipici, a partire dal rapporto tra architettura e città. 24

L’insieme delle due cose, l’insegnamento tangibile che deriva dalla visita della città e gli studi che in essa si sono sviluppati acquisiscono oggi una nuova importanza, nel momento in cui le esigenze di molte città contemporanee rimettono in primo piano la necessità di comprendere i fenomeni urbani più recenti e di avere a disposizione esperienze sperimentate e concrete. Ovviamente, indicare Venezia come modello non significa pensare alle parodie di Las Vegas, così come riconsiderare gli studi urbani veneziani degli anni sessanta e settanta non può esimere da una presa di distanza critica, pena la messa in scena di uno stanco “revival”. Molti dei vantaggi che la città offre sono resi oggi invisibili dalla massa dei turisti, ma per chi sa guardare resta un capitale di valori e conoscenza che la città ha serbato, malgrado le mascherature della sua immagine. Da qui si può ripartire; rivendicare l’appartenenza a Venezia qualifica e rende diverso il punto di vista di chi qui si è formato, e contribuisce a rinnovare il ruolo stesso di una città espressione al contempo, del massimo di passato e del massimo di presente.

Increasingly, Venice will serve as a superior vantage point for observing the future development of cities. This statement might come across as provocative and overreaching, given that the lagoon city comes under the spotlight more for the risks it runs – with the giant cruise ships, suffocating tourism, loss of population, high tides – than for its advantages. Furthermore, the city’s beauty so far exceeds that of any other place that it is seen as being unique and impossible to emulate. These two points of fact bring us perilously close to seeing the Venice of the future as more like a museum or theme park than a living and exportable model. Even so, Venice is on all counts a city and still possesses all those characteristics: a multitude of civic activities, symbols and inhabitants. Moreover, Venice is extremely contemporary in the sense that it has many of the criteria that cities aspire to today. Aspects of history have tested the city, leaving their mark and becoming an integral part of it; let us consider a few of these. Alberto Ferlenga

Venice is cosmopolitan, multicultural and welcoming – and has been ever since it established connections that covered much of the known world. Venice is a sustainable city: it is built on a human scale; people can get around by foot or via water, and it has no urban sprawl. Venice is a safe city. Venice has always been resilient – in the construction of its houses and the adapting of its entire morphology to the soil and to the water it rises above. Venice is a silent city and nowadays relatively unpolluted (giant cruise ships aside). Venice has always had a close relationship with its natural environment, within which lies the reason for its existence. Venice has managed to keep its past alive and live with it side by side. Venice has a network of public spaces, promoting residents’ wellbeing and sense of community. The list goes on. Venice has extensive experience in these conditions. For its size, it receives the highest number of tourists worldwide; it is home to a unique concentration of artworks; and it has long had to deal with phenomena very similar to those brought on by the climate crisis. A large part of the abovementioned characteristics correspond to what other city dwellers of the world are striving for: pedestrian zones; alternative means of transport; small, contained clusters within the urban spread; sustainability and resilience; and social wellbeing. Moreover, Venice returns to be a feasible model at a time when other models dreamt up to keep modern cities in check reveal 28

their inadequacy. The concept of Venice as a model could be highlighted to the millions of tourists that visit each year who do not see that many of the experiences they have during their short holiday could, with the necessary adjustment, be reproduced in the countries they live in. In Venice, after all – and here I refer specifically to our university – theories have been spun and academic tools fashioned for the understanding of urban planning in its typical aspects – that is, concerning form – which arose from the relationship between architecture and the city. The tangible lessons to be gained from the city and the research carried out here gain new importance now that many contemporary cities are prioritising their need to understand the most recent climatic events and to have proven solutions at hand. Proposing Venice as a model in this regard does not mean giving the go-ahead to some Las Vegas-style parody, just as revisiting the urban studies of Venice of the 1960s and 1970s – unless done as a tired ‘revival’ – are bound to encounter some critical distancing. There is, however, a store of knowledge that the city has kept aside, despite the masquerade of its imagery and its falling short of the urban planning work. That knowledge can be drawn on; reclaiming it creates the possibility for those who study here to achieve a unique point of view and contribute to the renewal of the actual role of a city that is the most significant expression, at the same time, of the past and of the present.

Iuav Academics Abroad is a Network of Alumni Iuav who hold an academic position abroad. A community that shares roots, methods, experiences and foundation words as multicultural bridges to link Venice and the world. This book presents city portraits and visions displayed through the lenses of the Iuav educational philosophy. An "analogous city" for Venice – quoting Aldo Rossi, one of Iuav Masters – is the collection of those fragments, linked by the role of Venice as a kaleidoscope on contemporary reality and of Università Iuav di Venezia as a School.
