HAVE
YOU
BEEN COMMITTING CURTAIN SIN?
How to correctly hang curtains.
Imagine this, you buy the most perfect outfit for a night out, but you purposely buy it two sizes too small. It just looks cheap, nasty and silly, right? Well that’s exactly what you’re doing when you commit these curtain sins. Chances are, you didn’t know how to properly hang your curtains, but here’s your chance to right your wrongs. Perfectly hung curtains that are the right length can instantly transform your space. It can make it feel bigger, brighter and even taller. That’s if, and only if you do it correctly after all. So here it is, the most common curtain sins, and how you should actually hang curtains successfully.
Curtain Rod too Low You might have thought your curtain rod needs to be just above your window frame.
Wrong!
Ideally, you should place your curtain rod at around
½
- 2/3 of the
distance between your window frame and your ceiling. This will help your ceilings look as high as possible. Lifting the rod lifts the eye, which makes your ceilings look higher and ultimately your space looks bigger.
Curtain’s that are just too short One we see so often – the short stumpy curtains that look like an ankle swinger. And just like ankle swingers, curtains that are too short cuts off your room making it feel short and stumpy. Correctly measure the length and choose how you want your curtains to hang. If you would prefer your curtains to ‘float’ above your floor, measure within an inch of your floor. This will ensure they hang completely straight, but still give your space height and length. Alternatively, you could ‘puddle’ your curtains on the floor and this in itself is a gorgeous feature. It’s a romantic effect and perfect for high quality materials like washed linen or velvet.
Curtain Rod is not wide enough This is a really common mistake when installing a curtain rod, but measuring the rod just to the width of the window frame is a huge mistake. It means your curtains are forced to hang in your window, making it feel and look smaller. If you have the space, extend your rod at least 6-10 inches either side of your window frame so when your curtains are pushed totally open, you can see almost all of the window.
Curtain’s not wide enough Our final mistake is buying curtains that will only just cover your window when drawn. This can make them look taught and stretched. Over compensate by 10% for a softness to your fabric.
So go on, have you been committing curtain sin?

Join us as we go through the Letterbox of Keelie Hayler.
Homeowner of a stunning 3 bed, 2 bath semi-detached house in Nottingham. Her beautiful boho home has captured thousands of fans on Instagram, making it one of the most envious homes in the UK. ‘We bought our first house last summer after spending 2 years in a city centre flat. We were ready to get on the property market and found our house after seeing 8 other houses. We loved the location and the size of the house. It had a great garden and a lush open plan kitchen/living space (that is what we was looking for), the size of the house really caught our eye and the potential it had’.
With over 66k instagram followers, Keelies Journey has become a staple home interior and décor account to follow for effortless design and style. But how did Keelie start sharing her home journey on instagram? ‘I didn’t start off sharing my home, it actually started with food! But I loved sharing the process of updating our first home so I started to post it more on my Instagram and I got really positive compliments about it! I just love sharing what we do with it! It’s also really good to look back on too.’
Keelie has worked incredibly hard to create a cohesive home. With a neutral palette and pops of colour, it’s hard to believe Keelie has only been in her home for just a year. So, what has Keelie done to her property since buying it 12months ago, to make it the home it is now? ‘In just 12 months, we have managed to completely re-decorate the entire house. We decided to paint it all white, so we could continue to add personality in the coming months. This was one of the best decisions as it meant we have started with a blank canvas, making it easy to add those pops of colours. We’ve also completely transformed the garden. We got rid of the garage and had decking, stencilled the patio to a beautiful on trend pattern, and potted lots of colourful plants. We still have some more to do to it this summer which is exciting too! I try and do DIYs where possible and the main one is the bathroom! We didn’t want to install a new bathroom for a couple of years, so we painted the tiles and stencilled the floor. We also managed to DIY an on-trend shower screen which I am so chuffed with.’
Doing interior and exterior work yourself can be hugely rewarding and money saving. So what other DIY projects are on Keelies mind? ‘We’re still working on the garden and the side of the house – which is quite a big project. Part of our garden project includes a summerhouse which I can’t wait to get into and start styling! Having recently finished off the master bedroom and bathroom, I'm pretty eager to sink my teeth into the summerhouse.’
As you explore Keelies home, there is a real feeling of calm and comfort. A white palette complemented with soft colours, texture and bohemian pieces. Not forgetting natural materials like wood and wicker to marry the spaces together. Where did Keelie get her inspiration for her home from? ‘I tend to find my inspiration on Instagram and Pinterest! I’ve recently followed so many new home accounts which are great for inspiration. Not forgetting the evenings, I spend scrolling Pinterest and pinning ideas and inspo. I like bright and airy with a bit of boho and scandi vibes! But I’m sure it will continue to change as time goes on as it’s changed so much already since we moved in!’
Keelie has achieved so much in her home in such a short space of time. Creating a home that reflects her personality, and of course moulding her home into a space she can kick back and relax in. Over the last 12 months, what has Keelie learnt? The biggest thing I have learnt is that you don’t need everything straight away! I’m super impatient and want everything now (which can be good and bad!) but I think investing in key pieces is ideal and if you want to try something DIY it!!! If it doesn’t work, then change it.
Buying a property is a huge milestone. Making sure you make the right purchase, and of course make the most of the investment you make is something rather daunting yet exciting. Keelie found a home she could transform into a home. One with her mark and a reflection of her style. What is her biggest advice for those looking for their first home? First and foremost - view as many houses as you can! Make a home wish list, and parts of your future home that you need to be comfortable. If you really want something in your home, then stick with it until you find the one that fits the bill. You’ll only regret it later on if you just settle!
My favourite room in the entire house has to be my dressing room! I’ve always wanted one and it’s been transformed into my very own room
I would also avoid buying stuff for your home before you’ve moved in. I just think it’s important to see and feel the space before purchasing large items! Especially when you haven’t taken measurements! Finally, invest in those key pieces like your sofa and bed! Spending less might seem beneficial, but only in the short run, as
with white washed floors and a copper clothes rail. It also doubles up as an office space which has been great whilst working from home! In our old flat I never had room for all my clothes, so It’s nice having my very own space the way I want it, especially with my newly painted pink door.
you’ll just be repurchasing later down the

LIVING ROOM FLOORING IDEAS

our days in our living spaces, so the flooring and finish needs to suit your lifestyle and home perfectly. With so many different flooring ideas for your living space, careful consideration on how you use the space, and your current furniture and colour palette needs to be high priority. Your living room is classed as a high traffic spot in the home, meaning it’s a high risk for wear, tear and potential damage. So, here’s some great living room flooring ideas that will guarantee perfect use and atmosphere.
Plush Carpet Carpet can be practical as well as pretty, including warming too. A plush carpet with high quality underlay can offer real warmth to your living room, and keep it draft free. Investing in a good quality pile as well as underlay makes a huge difference on its durability, and making it soft and plush underfoot too. Not forgetting, high quality underlay offers better heat insulation.
Natural Carpet If you want to keep your space light, bright and neutral, natural carpets are a fantastic, and durable material to consider. What’s better, they add real texture and interest into the space.
Layers Layering rugs over your carpet is a fantastic way to protect light colored carpeting and adding extra texture into your living room. Rugs can preserve the lifespan of a neutral carpet, and add some warmth and comfort underfoot.
Embrace wooden floors If you’re lucky enough to have beautiful wooden floors, cherish and showcase them. Their instant rustic charm can look stunning with any style. Plus, their durable and easy to maintain. Just be sure to insulate underneath as they can be terrible at retaining heat.
Engineered Wood A quality alternative to real wooden flooring is engineered wood. Each plank is finished with a layer of natural wood to create an authentic look that will last. It keeps costs down but retains the style of wooden flooring. Plus, it’s fantastic in high traffic areas as it’s hard wearing, durable and super easy to clean.
Vinyl Luxury Vinyl is affordable, elegant and easy to install. With a wealth of designs, vinyl can be the cheaper alternative to more expensive design styles including wood and stone. Vinyl is highly water resistant, low patience and easy to clean. Plus, its compatible with underfloor heating which is perfect if wanting to add warmth to your space.
What is the best flooring for your living room? It all depends on your household and the use of the space. If you have children and pets, and direct access to the garden, carpet isn’t the best option as it is likely damage easy and get dirty quick. A surface that is hardwearing and easy to clean, like Vinyl and Engineered wood, would be a better option. If these aren’t factors you have to worry about, then carpet would be a great addition to add warmth, comfort and texture to your space.

UPDATE YOUR DINING SPACE FOR A FRESH EATING AND ENTERTAINING AREA – ON A BUDGET! As with any update in your home, time, money and creativity can all be barriers. But not here. We have some budget friendly ideas to update your eating space. Whether it be a separate room, and open space or a corner in your kitchen, there are plenty of ways to modernise and breathe new life into your entertaining and eating space.
Swap the chairs for a bench Bench seating is so versatile, space saving and popular in kitchens and dining spaces. Consider swapping a couple of your chairs for a rustic bench. Style with seat cushions or a knitted throw to make sure guests stick around comfortably for dessert.
Statement lighting We say it a lot here, but lighting really does make a huge impact on any space, so simply updating your light fitting, or being bold with a light itself can have a quick, impressive transformation on your dining space. If you are able, consider a low hung fitting with various aspects. This can create an intimate atmosphere around your table.
New linen It’s funny how much a table cloth can hide – including marks, scratches and watermarks. Aside from that, a new table cloth can update a tired table in minutes. If you think a table cloth might be a bit too much, choose a runner instead. Update your napkins, placemats and coasters to a new colour scheme to breathe new life into your table setting.
Mini Art Gallery Switching up your art is a quick and simple update for any space, including your dining area. If you’re eager to add colour and interest into your space, a mini art gallery is for you. Showcase beautiful patterns, prints, personal family photos or even quotes. Once you’ve installed a mini art gallery, it’s easy to update it frequently with new images and prints.
Upcycle your chairs You may have worn wooden chairs, or spot some inexpensive ones in a charity shop. But don’t be put off by the pine, consider painting wooden chairs to incorporate a new, fresh colour scheme. It’s super easy to upcycle dining chairs, just make sure you prep the area correctly, and use primer. Once painted, grab some cushions to make them super comfy.

Letterbox Colour Palettes
PINK
Every month we take a look at a different colour and how it can be brought into your home. We know adding new colour, or any colour into your home can feel daunting. There is no one size fits all when it comes to adding and using colour in your own home. But, every home does need some colour. It can boost your mood, ease anxiety and make it feel like your own. In July, we are looking at Green! Glorious Green. If you haven’t considered Green in your home, there really is no reason why. Green is a beautiful colour to adopt into your home palette and with the right shade, can easily be paired with some stunning colours. Here’s a full guide on how you can inject Green into your home.
LET’S TALK SHADES... As with every colour we look into, Pink has so many shades and almost moods to consider before grabbing a paint pot. Deep pinks, Soft Pinks, Subtle Pinks and Candy Pinks can all look fantastic with a huge variety of textures, colours and interior trends.
PINK CAN BE USED ANYWHERE As with any colour, pink can be incorporated into any space, any home. With the correct finish, pink in any part of your property can look smart, grown up and bang on trend. Pair with darker shades In your kitchen space. Dark units and light counter tops work so well against a contrasting, bold pink tile. Accessorized with matt black finishes, this kitchen colour palette will add style and interest into a would be run of the mill kitchen.
Pink on Pink Can look truly beautiful in your bathroom and en-suite. Of set the pink hues with gold of brassy finishes for an expensive looking wet room. If you prefer the contrast of those darker hues, matt dark grey is a fantastic choice also.
KEEP I T MOODY. We get it, not everyone is completely confident in splashing their entire home in Pink. So incorporating moody, masculine shades is a great counter balance against that bright Pink. Navy, Grey, Black and even Green make fantastic contrasting colours and also offer some moody tones.
PLAY WI TH MATERI ALS There really isn't many materials pink doesn't suit, so don't be scared to mix and match a variety of materials with the colour. We love a soft, light beachwood with subtle pink shades.
WHY SHOULD YOU ADOPT PI NK I NTO YOUR HOME? Pink is a lovey addition for any home. With its versatility with other shades, and trends, there really isn't a reason why your home, or any home, couldn't sneak some pink hues.

THE SNAKE PLANT
Loved by all plant lovers, the snake plant makes the perfect houseplant for your bathroom. It can thrive in any humidity level and can tolerate low or bright indirect light. This is a great beginner's houseplant for your bathroom! MONSTERA
Is a stunning and ever popular houseplant thanks to its iconic leaves and its ability to suit in its of different environments, including your bathroom. It can handle low light, though it will do better in brighter indirect light, and it can handle any level of humidity. BAMBOO
Might not have been your first choice of houseplant for your bathroom, but it will certainly give you some spa vibes. Bamboo grows in water and is a super low-maintenance, plus it’s pretty happy in low-light spaces. A great option for those windowless bathrooms. BROMELIAD

Orchids are a little fussy when it comes to watering, but even though they prefer their soil to be on the drier side, they also like humidity—they are tropical plants, after all. Orchids tolerate low light, but will fare much better in brighter indirect light, so they're better kept on your bathroom windowsill.

FIREPLACE DESIGNS PERFECT FOR COLDER EVENINGS
We hate to be wishing the summer nights away, but cooler, darker evenings are coming, and fast! But that doesn’t spell a return to our living rooms for evening entertainment. Oh no, there is still plenty of time to enjoy our outside spaces, even into October. Outdoor fireplaces are a fantastic addition to add warmth, light and focus, especially on those colder nights. But what design will compliment your garden? Here’s the hot outdoor fireplace designs that are perfect for your garden this autumn.
THE PURPOSE BUILT Fireplaces aren’t just for colder nights, and make a great focus point in your outdoor space all year round. The purpose-built fireplace is fantastic for those gardens with space and reason for a roaring fire, throughout the year. Treat it like an internal fireplace, with beautiful, comfortable seating for a relaxed atmosphere. Or have It as an accompaniment for your dining, eating area. Compliment your purpose-built fireplace with a pergola or covered deck for an all-weather outdoor space.
THE FIREPIT If you’re looking for a truly relaxed outdoor hangout, the firepit is for you. With many styles, including the rustic, polished and modern, there isn’t a garden that a firepit can be squeezed into. For small, intimate gardens, fire pit bowls that can be stored when not in use are the perfect option. For the larger gardens, creating a seating area a fire pit can sit centre stage is a fantastic addition.
WINDOW BOXES – WHY YOU SHOULD HAVE THEM ON YOUR HOME t’s not often you see a lovely, colourful and well executed window box these days. And when you do, we all realise how beautiful they are. So why don’t more homes have them? I
Especially when so many homes would flourish with a little colour and flower on the front of their property. Window boxes are easy
EASY TO INSTALL. Yep, we’ve said it, but it’s so easy to install a window box onto your home. With mountable baskets and boxes, simply drill into your brick work and mount using strong fixings. Bare this in mind, as once those boxes are full, there will be a large amount of weight to them.
DIY FOR A BESPOKE FIT Can’t find what you’re looking for online? Why not create your own? Window boxes are easy to build and DIY. Creating your own will mean you can create the perfect style and colour to suit your home. A great DIY guide can be found here.
to install, pretty to look at, and with a little planning, can offer your home all year round foliage and flowers to decorate your home. But if you’re still not sold, here’s why more of us should have window boxes on ours.
GREAT ADDITION TO NEW BUILDS THAT LACK CHARACTER Homes that lack character, like a new build, really lend well to window boxes. For homes with little to no established flowers or greenery to soften the front of a property. Adding wall mounted window baskets can be that added detail your new home needs.
Keep the colour in your garden throughout Autumn – The best autumn-flowering plants Summer is a bright and colourful affair, especially in our gardens. But even in Autumn, there is plenty of colour to be found in the cooler months too. September is actually a really good time to plant fresh in your garden. The soil is still warm, and all being well, the wet weather will help bed in new plants. To keep your garden looking as colourful as summer, there are lots of exuberant flowers that bloom in the autumn months.

Winter Aconite Looks very much like a buttercup, the winter aconite has a beautiful bright yellow colour. They are best suited to growing underneath trees and shrubs as they prefer rich, moist soil and shady parts of the garden.
Cyclamen Is the usual choice for autumn flowers as it remains intact throughout the winter weather. Its flowers come in a range of colours including Pink, red and white and look best planted in pots or under trees.
Crocus The harsher autumn weather forces the crocus up through the ground, making these the perfect hardy plant for colder weather. The iconic, cup-shaped flowers look great in pots and borders, but plant them beneath trees and shrubs where they will be protected from heavy rain.
