5 SMALL CHANGES TO MAKE YOU HAPPIER IN YOUR HOME because we can all get bored of our home. period.

by Charlotte Nichole.

It’s fairly common to get bored of your home. Yes, I said it. Boredom breeds unhappiness and well no one wants to be unhappy in the space that they should be using to relax and get away from daily life. Did you know, our homes account for over 15% of our total happiness so doing some home improvements can certainly lift your spirits! Since our home can affect our general well being and happiness, here are 5 small, but effective changes to make to your home to make you happier!

INCORPORATE A NEW COLOUR SCHEME Incorporating a new colour, or even a whole new scheme into a space can massively boost your mood towards your home. Whether you change the whole palette of your home, or just spice up your main spaces to incorporate a new colour is completely up to you. If painting isn’t your bag, here’s some other ideas at incorporating a new, complimenting colour into your home : – Switch up you cushions and swap some for the new colour. – Grab some new blankets and throws – Change some of your pictures to prints with the new colour

RE-JIG YOUR SPACE Sometimes we can feel unhappy as space we do have isn’t working for us. You don’t need to knock down walls here, just look to move and remodel the space you do have. You may need to get rid of some furniture or move what you do have into a new configuration. Changing it all around can help the flow of the room and your happiness towards space.

UPGRADE YOUR FURNISHINGS Tatty, old and outdated furniture can create a pretty bleak space – especially if its no longer a style you want to embrace.

DECLUTTER AND CHUCK THE CRAP I chat decluttering a lot over here and I truly believe decluttering can hugely improve the feel of any home. You may feel like it’s been a while since you sifted through the crap and chucked what you no longer need. This is just the time to do that. Chucking the crap you don’t need can make some mch needed space to store everything else effectively in your home.

CREATE SOME AMBIENCE Whilst modern living is pretty streamlined and clutter-free, having an element of personality and warmth into your home is so important. Incorporate some personal pictures and pieces as well as candles, soft lighting and furnishings can transform a home from cold and clinical to cosy and warm.

UNIQUE WAYS TO PAINT YOUR WALLS BY

CHARLOTTE-NICHOLE

Because just painting up and down is no longer a thing. Whilst carefully painted walls are beautiful, sometimes a little creativity can go a long way. To give you some alternative ideas, here’s how too add some colour to your walls this SS19, without just painting your walls..

PANELING

It’s classic and it will suit any home, especially those with classic features, or a traditional past. Paneling seems to be growing in popularity, and with many instagrammers taking the trend into their home, it’s bound to grow more so. I especially love the kind that doesn’t completely cover the wall, and creates a dual colour aspect into a space. WHERE TO USE PANELING?

Don’t panic, you can pretty much use paneling in any space of your home. There is of course, the different type of paneling to consider to. I would suggest you think wisely on the ‘theme’ or feel you are trying to achieve. To add grandeur to a space, large square paneling may work better, especially in a living, or bedroom space. If you are looking to bring a farmhouse / rustic style into your home, tonge and groove paneling will be more ascetically pleasing and will work in any space including a bathroom. PARTLY PAINTED OR 50/50

This is a style we have certainly adopted in our home, partly due to our ceiling height and wall size.Partly painting your wall, or going for a half and half effect can help incorporate colour, without having to paint the entire wall. Plus, its a pretty modern take on the classic dado rail style all us grew up with our homes. Combining stunning shades, or being bold with contrasting colours using the partly painted effect IT DOESN’T HAVE TO BE EXACTLY HALF…. Oh no, going for slated lines, a quarter height or even three quarter height can all have the same effect, and create a truly striking space. YOU CAN ADD SOME PICTURE RAILS

If you do want a classic, yet classy look, you may want to consider a picture rail. Whilst our parents may have donned the infamous dado rail, using one correctly can create a classic, rather traditional look.

There are so many ways you can paint your home. Being average may be easier and pretty safe, it can be more fun, daring and bold to incorporate different techniques in painting and using colour.

Freshly skimmed walls, neutral carpets and a sparkling new kitchen is a given. But what about style? A flair of character in a bland, blank space? This month we catch up with Georgia and Tom, both of who have nailed the new build style and injected their personality into their Redrow Home. Georgia and Tom live in their Redrow

based on a 1930s home. As much as we love our new build home, we do prefer old homes with plenty of character. So we try and strike a balance by introducing the older style and features into our new space. A easy way we have done this is by adding paneling into some of our space, including our hallway and bedroom".

Whilst Georgia and Tom have a brand new home, they still have plenty of projects to do to give their home more flair. "Even though we have a new build, there is plenty for us to get on with. First point of call is to get rid of the almond white walls! We also have big plans to install a kitchen island too.

I'm always looking on Instagram and Pinterest to find new, and exciting trends to incorporate into our own home. Our latest fav is monochrome. It's a easy style to incorporate especially in furniture".

Georgia and Tom have managed to create a home that could be easily bland, boring and common. New build homes can lack personality and character, and yet with the help of easy DIY and a gorgeous interior style, @inside_numberfive is a inspiration for all homeowners.

How to

MAKE A MENTAL HEALTH HAVEN

Of Your Home BY MY

JO

KINGSLEY

LIFE

In the midst of the current mental health crisis, it’s more important than ever to make time for self-care and find peaceful spaces to clear the mind and recharge the batteries. But when time is scarce and your finances simply won’t allow you to indulge in a yoga retreat atop a Nepalese mountain, where do you begin? Well like a lot of things, you begin at home. With so much time spent out and about, from work to the gym, ferrying kids around or running errands, we often forget the importance of our own homes on our mental health. They shouldn’t just be a place to crash and binge on the latest boxsets – they should be our own little healing sanctuary.

Here are my top tips for making your home a haven that your mental health will thank you for.

CREATE CALM WITH COLOUR We all know that colour can stimulate different responses and affect our mood. So what colours should we be using to create a calm and restful space in our home? It sounds counter-intuitive but, despite all the old adages ("feeling blue", "baby blues", "singing the blues" etc) many studies have found blue to be most associated with calmness and relaxation. In fact, in a recent study conducted by papermakers G.F. Smith, in association with the University of Sussex, navy blue was found to be the most relaxing colour in the world.Grey has grown in popularity in recent years and a soft tone can also be extremely soothing. You can either keep it neutral by accessorising with serene white or bring a touch of comfort with a warm purple as I’ve done in my own bedroom. Just be prepared for your Mother to think you've lost it. A grey bedroom? GREY??!If you’re not sure you want to fully commit to the boldness of a blue or grey colour scheme, you can always start with a feature wall, accessories or soft furnishings and go from there.

SEE THE LIGHT LED spotlights might be bang on trend and environmentally friendly, but they are certainly not relaxing. Certain types of light can actually affect our circadian rhythm and both our mental and physical health, so it’s important to get the lighting in your home right.Natural light is best for us, so make sure blinds and curtains are kept open in daylight to maximise your exposure. (Just remember not to walk around your house naked).Try installing dimmer switches (if your electrics allow) to give you a little more control over bright overhead lighting, and investing in floor lamps, which give off a much softer light and can be easily repositioned. Ensure that you’re switching off mobiles, computers, tablets and flat screen TVs well before bedtime to allow your body to recover from the blue light they emit, and if you use a Kindle to read at night, protect your eyes by switching to the soft light function. Finally, invest in a Himalayan salt lamp (make sure you buy certified from a reputable source). They are believed to have various health benefits, such as helping you sleep, cleaning the air, soothing allergies and boosting your mood.

MAKE THE MOST OF YOUR SPACE Unless you live in a mansion (we can dream, can't we?) you probably don't have enough space to transform a few rooms into dedicated relaxation areas. So the key is to use your space creatively and flexibly, and have a selection of items that can be stored away but can make a huge difference in the event of a wellness emergency.Try purchasing a bath caddy to instantly transform a standard bath into an indulgent mini spa.Make a permanent space in your wardrobe or drawers for a little basket and fill it with all your favourite treats, whether it's nice candles and face masks or posh chocolate and wine, so that you always have a personal happiness kit ready for those tough days.Simple things like a yoga mat, special blankets and a few essential oils means that, with the help of a zen playlist and a little imagination, you can transform your room into a mini spa retreat at any given moment and still have it packed away again by dinner time.

GET BACK TO NATURE From forest bathing to soaking up vitamin D in the sun, getting out into nature is good for our minds and bodies. So how can we cheat, and snatch up a bit of nature's goodness in the comfort of our own homes? Start by bringing the outside inside and fill your home with plants. As well as being beautiful and relaxing to look at, they can help to naturally purify and filter the air in your home and increase oxygen, resulting in a healthier, happier you.But if you’re like me and struggle to keep your kids alive, let alone an indoor jungle, why not invest in some good quality fake plants? You can now get a huge array of false flowers, pot plants and even cacti that you’d struggle to tell weren’t real. OK, so you won’t get the physical health benefits, but you’ll still enjoy all the mental ones. And if all else fails, try painting your bedroom or living room green – it follows closely behind blue as one of the best colours for tranquillity.

DO YOUR OWN THING We all love a bit of Pinterest inspiration, but don't let social media anxiety ruin your safe space. Your home doesn't have to be ultra chic Scandi, nor do you have to Marie Kondo your house until there's nothing left. It's your home and it's there to make you happy and at ease. Whilst clutter isn’t great for mental health, being surrounded by the things that make you you will always cheer your soul.
