CHAIRMANS REPORT UACS continues to go from strength to strength, as it clocks up the years, overcoming many barriers along the way in its quest to sustain its services. This year marked the 37th anniversary of the organisation. We continue to maintain strong links in the community, working in partnership with several organisations, to develop new services as well as improve the quality of our existing services. The financial resources received from our grant providers, during the year have been effectively employed, and I am pleased to say going forward our financial future looks much brighter than anticipated for this year. FUNDING Although the grant received this year from London Borough of Ealing one of our main funders for our luncheon club represents less than 25% of the previous year I am pleased to say that through hard work and determination we were able to secure funding to carry out the older people project for a further 3 years. To fund projects for the elderly.
Floating Support scheme for African/Caribbean & Ethnic Minority Community older people (FACEM) three of these projects are fully operational and represent good value for money. Unfortunately, the FACEM is operated on a voluntary basis through lack of funds.
CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT
We have for the first time worked with London Transport Museum Community Curators on two projects, one called ‘What’s Cooking’ where members design recipe cards and participate in practical cooking, and the other ‘Simple Surfing for beginners’ which was an introduction to the internet for several of our members.
We are constantly striving to sustain customer satisfaction and provide an excellent service to our users by ensuring that we have the following in place: Adequate Quality Assurance System, Good governance, PQASSO (Practical Quality Assurance System for Small Organisation Investing in Volunteers (IIV), Accreditation for providing Supported Housing services for young single homeless people and the Framework for assessing Customer Satisfaction To help us to progress these standards we have employed a Services Manager in November 2007, for the first time, thanks to a grant from the Ealing and Brentford Consolidated Charity, to whom we are very grateful.
ACTIVITIES
THANK YOU The Executive Committee, staff and volunteers, as always, have been resolute in their effort to adequately meet the needs of our users. I am thankful to everyone, for their continuing dedication and commitment together with their wealth of experience and diversity to lead the organisation forward. My sincere thanks to all our supporters without whom this event would not have been possible.
PROJECT UPDATE Our Older people Luncheon Club (ELC), George Doyley House shared accommodation for 18-25 single homeless African/Caribbean (GDH), Housing Advice and Resettlement Scheme (HARS).

ABOUT OUR CHARITY United Anglo Caribbean Society Elderly Lunch Club – The lunch club was set up in 1985. • We provide a hot and balanced lunch as well as encouraging socialization for the African / Caribbean elders in the Ealing Borough and its environs. • The lunch club is a place where African / Caribbean elders can meet and reminisce on past events. • We also have a thriving dominoes club who take part in tournaments, both at home and away visiting other clubs within England. • We also arrange trips/outings throughout the year visiting places of interest too, even for short holidays both in the UK and abroad.
George Doyley House: - This Project was opened in 1993. • George Doyley House comprises of a six-bed shared accommodation providing temporary housing for young single homeless African/Caribbean men and women aged 18-25 years old with low support needs in an environment that is suitable, enabling and responsive to their needs. • The House derives its name in honor of Mr George Doyley, a founding member of the United Anglo Caribbean Society whose work was extremely innovative with action not words in the establishment of the Project. • The project provides good quality affordable homes and continues to make a difference to the lives of many young homeless people and is constantly in demand.
Floating Support Scheme for the Elderly: - This was setup in 2003. • To help older people from the Black and Minority Ethnic community to gain access to basic and specialised services while living in the self-contained accommodation (e.g. local authority, housing association, private rented and owner occupied). • This service unfortunately is currently being carried out only on a voluntary basis through lack of funding.
Housing Advice and Resettlement Scheme:
This project was also setup in 2003.
• To provide housing advice and resettlement service to single people who are homeless or at risk of being homeless in the Borough of Ealing i.e. refugees/ asylum seekers, care leavers, ex-offenders, etc. • As a result of new funding from London Boroughs Council this service has been extended into four other boroughs, Brent, Harrow, Hillingdon and Hounslow which reflects a high demand for this service.
UACS Research Programme:
Funded by Ealing Primary Care Trust (PCT) 2008. • The United Anglo Caribbean Society will be undertaking research into the Health and Social Care needs of Older People of African, Caribbean and Somali decent. • This research will be undertaken with The Royal Holloway University which has been commissioned to oversee the research. We also intend to recruit community researchers from the ethnic groups stated above, to conduct the research.

Partnership Working With London Transport Museum
!
At the conclusion of the ‘What’s Cooking’ sessions, one of our members is presented with his own design at the back of a recipe card by the London Transport Museum Community Curators. These cards were widely distributed in Acton and Ealing through Libraries and other locations.
The Luncheon Club The Luncheon Club continues to be the focal point where African-Caribbean older people meet to share and reminisce on past events and to keep up with current affairs. On display at our Christmas Lunch some of the older people’s handy work done during the year at the Arts and Craft sessions which we provide once a week.
Christmas Lunch In December 2007
At our Christmas lunch in December 2007 over 80 older people enjoyed a sumptuous meal, many with disability and mobility problems were bused in others made their own way to the event. Following the lunch there was a free raffle before everyone got into a party mood and had an enjoyable afternoon. The quality of the event was enhanced by a Grant received from Help the Aged; we would like to thank them for this support which enabled everyone to have a memorable celebration.
Birthday Club Our lunch club cook joins members of our birthday club in a photo shoot as they display their birthday presents. Birthday celebrations take place once a month on the last Thursday of each month where everyone gets into a party mood and enjoy themselves. Every Thursday we hold a prayer meeting and sing 1 or 2 hymns. We also have a birthday club where we celebrate someone’s birthday with gifts, soft drinks and music and dancing.
Domino Champions The competitive team spirit continues to be the driver within the inter-borough domino fixtures. Creating an environment conducive to socialisation and a determination to win are key factors in these competitive events. Over the last five years, the domino team remain champion over the local event at the Acton Carnival staged by Acton Community Forum.

Presented by
United Anglo Caribbean Society in conjunction with
The Dominican Oversea Nationals Association and
The Acton Community Forum On 11 October 2008 The theme for the event was “The Journey” we set out to look at the freedom of mass migration to England from the African Continent and the Caribbean in particular to join in the celebration of the 60th Anniversary of the SS Empire Windrush which docked on June 22, 1948, at Tilbury in Essex. Its arrival marked an important moment in the history of modern England. Relive the voyage of the SS Windrush from the Caribbean to Tilbury, and join us as we look back over the millennia at the history of immigration to England, ... The steamship had stopped in Jamaica to pick up some of the thousands of servicemen who had been recruited to serve in the armed forces during the second world war. They were joined on their life-changing Atlantic voyage by some 500 other Caribbean men and women keen to visit England. Over the years “the Windrush generation” and their families have become integral to our society.
