Q: You titled your debut album Aijuswanaseing (I Just Want to Sing), so, eight years later is it safe to say that you’ve accomplished so much more than just that? Musiq: Yeah, definitely. I’ve released three other projects, I’ve had some very, very successful singles. I can do shows, even when I don’t have an album out, that will consist of my core audience - which is a lot of people – that I’m really grateful for. I’m just honored that I have a career that always does me good, and I’m doing something that people love and care about musically. Yeah, I like to think that I’ve done a lot. Q: ‘On My Radio’ is going to be your fifth studio album this decade. Does that statement amaze you, or did you expect to be five albums deep only eight years into your professional career? Musiq: No, I didn’t necessarily expect that, however I did make an attempt, or I did intend to put out as much music as I possibly could at any given time. It wouldn’t have surprised me if I put out more than that in 10 years, ‘cause I just have a whole lot of music that I’d like to put out. I’m always inspired, however I had to learn that the music industry has their own schedule of doin’ things, you know? Q: How have you gone about prioritizing the evolution of your music? Musiq: I think true artistry promotes progress. Redundancy doesn’t infuse new life into your artwork. I’m not the type of person who thrives off of redundancy; I thrive off of progress. I’ve maintained a certain pace through my career so far because I know that there’s people out there who might be shocked by the leaps that I could have taken in the name of being progressive, so I’ve honored that, but I’ve gotten to the point, also, that I feel as though I’ve accumulated enough of a core audience that they’ll be willing to go further with me. Q: Is there ever a worry that, in the process of trying to appeal to a broader fanbase, you might abandon your loyalists, who have followed you throughout your career? Musiq: The thing about that is, if you say that you’re loyal, then you’ll be willing to follow me, whatever I do. But I don’t have a worry, I don’t have a fear. Not to be overconfident, not to sound cocky, but this is what I do every day. I take what I do pretty seriously, and so when I do it, I put a lot of thought and work into it, and consideration, not just my own feelings about music and making music for myself; I can make music for myself somewhere else, but what I do, I do it for the people – whoever’s willing to listen - whoever’s willing to invest in it. Even as a child, I was a dreamer. I conjured up my own dreams and created a world of my own. At the same time, I was this sensible kid. You’ve been called on of the greatest voices that Ireland has ever produced. How does that make you feel? It’s really great. One of the things people don’t really know though is that I didn’t just pop up out of nowhere, I’ve been plugging away for some time now. It’s really been a long drawnout process, but the blessing is I have kept my head together. I’ve been able to enjoy and embrace the love without feeling too much pressure. When were you first aware that you had a musical talent? I never really thought about it. When I was younger I just enjoyed singing, it wasn’t until my family and friends started to say “wow, you can really sing” that I thought about other things. I think for a long time it was a confidence issue with me. I just had doubts if I was really a singer or just someone who could belt a couple of notes here and there. But when I won the songwriting competition, and corporate industry people were telling me I was good, I thought “okay, maybe I can do this.” Do you get nervous when you’re about to perform? No not really, I get a heathy dose of nerves. I think if you don’t get nervous there’s a problem. It’s more of an adrenalin thing for me. I’m one of those people who really likes a challenge. I usually perform better under pressure, which is kind of crazy. Have you ever felt pressure from label execs to change your image? No, not really. I’ve always had my own personal sense of style. I think the best thing is to have that freedom with it. I don’t believe that people should be told what to wear. I found my own style and image, so I’m like, if they don’t like it, they can stuff it! My label has been really cool and I’ve been lucky in that sense. For people who aren’t familiar with your music, how would you define your album? I think the album is very pure, in the sense that there are no real interferences from huge producers, it’s completely me. It’s got a foundation of soul and r&b but most importantly, it’s just a sincere, honest album. The songs really breathe, you hear my voice and you hear the melodies. You’re from Ireland, what was it like for you being a soul singer there? Growing up, my family weren’t that into soul and I kinda fell into it myself, it was a bit strange. Before I started to do gigs I was so nervous, I remember thinking: ‘does Ireland even like soul and are people going to get this? As a black singer will they get me?’ But I watched over the years a real desire and thirst for soul and black music really take hold. THE REEL TALE O How India’s film industry emerged from humble

OLLYWOOD is unique. On average, 800 films are produced and distributed every year, that is more than two per day, and shown to 11,000,000 people every day in 13,000 cinemas across India. To these statistics can be added the export of film to over a hundred countries where they are watched by millions of expatriate Indians, mostly in Britain, the United States, and Europe. It is India’s sixth largest industry and employs over 300,000 workers. No-one can convincingly explain the reasons for this phenomenon. Cinemas are like modern temples but with bright colours where devotees come to be transformed into another life in another world. They go back to see the blockbusters dozens of times; the stars are everywhere mobbed despite their platoons of armed bodyguards; the movie songs blare out from every radio, every shop and every passing car. And now the Internet is jumping with film and cinema websites and DVDs. There have been fundamental changes to Indian films over recent months and over the last few years. But such changes are seen to be much more interesting and even dramatic when viewed in the context of their historic background. The British connection meant

that film came to India at around the time of its very origin in Britain, America and the West. The first (silent) films of the Lumiere brothers were shown in Bombay in July 1896. Up until the 1930s the majority of films shown in India were imports from Hollywood or Europe, and although over 1,000 silent movies were actually made in India, even these tended to follow the successful formulas of Hollywood. The first talkies in India were made in 1931 and immediately there were two major impacts which have lasted to this day. One was the all-importance in Indian movies of song. And the other, more complicated, was the matter of language. The silent film could reach a universal audience in the whole country without reference to the reality that viewers spoke scores of different languages. While other cities made local-language productions, the output of films in the most widely understood language of all, Hindi-Urdu, by Bombay was the basis of its early and continuing dominance of the industry. The obvious similarity with its American equivalent gave rise to the well known ‘Bollywood’. At the same time, Bombay and the whole industry came to be organised into studios which could raise money, manage, direct, and distribute films and which could capture audiences

with their ‘brand’. The period up to Independence in 1947 saw a growth in the types of film being created and some commentators have identified at least two of the more purely Indian themes. By the 1950s filmmaking took idealised forms of the masculine and the feminine, like icons above and beyond the realms of natural or plausible characters. The images of the heroes and heroines such as Kumar, Anand, and Kapoor dominated newspapers, magazines and advertisements. The system also focused on expensive dress and song and dance and it has been the major formula identifying Indian film for several decades until recent times. Directors such as Khan, Dutt and Roy are permanently identified with this golden age but they are also sometimes known as the Movie Maharajas or the Sultans of Kitsch. On the other hand these big romantic technicolour productions like Aan and Mother India have been criticised by some because the settings, costumes and music were more important than the story or the dialogue. The decade of the 1970s experienced an even further extension of the lavishly coloured, starry, song-and-dance, love story. ‘Multi-starters’ as they became known, such as Zanjeer, Sholay and Deewar, sold on the basis of the number of big stars in the cast. At the same time there was

something of a development of an alternative formula, that of action, violence and bad behaviour. Amitabh Bachchan personified the angry young man, anti-hero whose

disillusionment makes him turn to crime against an unjust society. The 1980s saw the introduction of colour TV to India and at the outset it could only be afforded by the better off middle class and there was a falling off in the numbers of the well-off going to the cinema. As a result the films competing for this audience had to become more polished, glamourous and glossier than ever, the love themes, songs and the happy endings safer than ever. The art film genre had to take a different tack to

period the cinema continued to attract the masses of poor, illeducated, lower classes and this became more than ever the target for producers and directors. For this market the genre of anti-hero action movies of the seventies developed further in the following decade, with the production of films where violence was the major attraction. The 1990s was the decade which saw the advent of cable and satellite TV but despite this there was a return of the middle class to the cinema, largely as a result of better marketing and much improved comfort and facilities in the better picture houses. There arose a marked differentiation in audiences whereby poorer people would pay, perhaps, 10p in a downmarket flea pit while richer people would pay ten or twenty times as much for a modern, clean, ventilated cinema. The result was that the violent films continued to be shown to the masses while, for the better-off the films had to be yet bigger-budget, starrier, plushier, more romantic, more songand-dance than ever. By the end of the twentieth century, this progression seems to have reached saturation to the point

of boredom for many viewers. Only very few productions became hits or even broke even in the first year or two of the new century and by 2002, Bollywood saw itself in financial crisis. The £40 million loss which Bollywood clocked up in 2002 produced a radically new look not only at its economics but at its whole cultural tradition. Producers and directors had to have the courage to risk ditching the old formula of the hero, heroine, love-affair, happy-ending all set to music. Ram Gopal Varma, the producer/director of the film-making company Varma Corporation, has successfully decided to go for a low budget formula. He has said that getting away from the 50-year traditional mainstream is the only way to success in the current cultural climate. His films Raat and Kaun for example are completely songless. Another low-budget house is Vishesh Films owned jointly by Mahesh and Mukesh Bhatt, who claim never to have spent more than £1.5 million on a film and they, too, look to unorthodox themes like the supernatural. Their film, Raaz, is one of the most profitable films of recent years. Ram Gopal Varma’s movie, Bhoot, is the latest one to break cash register records. It was made for under £1 million and Varma shares the same view as the Bhatt’s, namely that the formula for economic profit is to have no big stars or big budgets but to have a big (new or newish) idea, and a big story. Guddu Dhanoa’s box office hit, Hawa, is another in the current

vogue. At a cost of £0.5 million it involves the leading lady being harassed by a phantom who repeatedly wants to go to bed with her. By way of explanation of the thinking behind the genre, Dhanoa explains ‘People love a good fright’. The idea that people love a good fright seems to have not only spread but seems to have become the basis for a recovery in the fortunes of Bollywood and a change in the culture and expectations of Indian film lovers. It may be a change from recent times but there is no way that it is new. There have been horror stories everywhere in the world since storytelling began and horror movies since movies began. The twenty-first century is seeing a rediscovery of horror, albeit in a slightly different guise. Early Indian horror films tended to make use of creaking doors, hooting owls, whining dogs and howling winds similar to the tools used by Britain’s famed House of Hammer. Then came the decades of the overdressed, over-glamorised love triangles which has inevitably resulted

in the pendulum swinging to the other extreme. Now, in the revival of weirdness and the new version of the genre, a few haunted houses and meowing cats remain, but there is more in the way of decomposing bodies, werewolves on the prowl and humans turning into animals. Even newer concepts are introduced which were previously little used or even taboo. These include rape, communication with the dead, and modern every-day items like computer games and household gadgets. The most common feature of the new wave of Bollywood movies is that the majority of even the most successful productions can be made for under £1m and the industry is in something of a frenzy of horror-house output. The horror vogue powers on but there is no doubt that, like all vogues, it will peter out as it has done before. Where Bollywood goes from here will be much

influenced by the continued swing away in public taste from the nowtraditional happy-ending, music-filled productions. It will also have to cope with the accelerating spread of cable and satellite TV across the country and across wider sections of society with a consequent decline in the appetite among the poorer segments for their traditional diet of violence and romance. They are becoming more accustomed to Hollywood’s slick and polished output and Bollywood is already showing that it can make different types of film with different types of entertainment experience. It is becoming more confident on themes away from the kitsch and the corny and even the remaining productions of the old highly-coloured, romantic genre are better looking and better produced than before.

On his new album, In Memory of the Street Fighter:  It got its’ title from my dad who passed away in the middle of last year. His nickname was Street Fighter. I dedicated the album to him. It also means a lot about the struggle. There’s a street fighter in a lot of people but sometimes they don’t know it. It’s really just about battles in life, experiences and just life stories. I would near enough say every track on the album is about something that happened to me

t only 17, North London based Chipmunk already has an impressive three mixtapes under his belt. With music industry heads proclaiming him as the next big thing - there hasn’t been a buzz this big since Dizzee Rascal’s name first began surfacing. Despite the allure of fame and the attention from girls, Chipmunk real name Jahmaal Noel Fyffe achieved glowing exam results. Michelle Adabra caught up with the talented MC to talk fame and more importantly… that skank. Don’t you think it’s funny how some ‘street’ slang is slipping into mainstream use, for example ‘one-away’? Chipmunk: (laughs). Yeah, it’s happening man, but do you know what it is, it’s the adaptation of cultures. The opinion of young people is more valid now, so in order to understand inner city or urban culture you have to understand the young people. Following the success of Wiley’s Rolex do you think artists such as yourself in the Grime arena have a better chance of penetrating the mainstream? Chipmunk: Yeah, I think it will be, but you have to be careful when you’re crossing over that you don’t loose your original fan base. You just have to get the balance right. Shout out to Wiley on that track; it’s a massive track, it’s not Grime obviously but you have to pay the bills man, that’s how it works. Let’s talk about Who Are You, which is a huge track with a big video but more importantly we need to discuss your skanks in the video... very inspiring - especially the ‘I am in a league of my own’ bit... Chipmunk: (laughs... for long). You know what, I’m like a funky person, seriously. What can I say, it just came out. I’ve got skanks, I’m like the king skanker still, at a dance you’ll see me in the middle. When I go out and Who Are You comes on - I do the skank too... Chipmunk: ...Yeah! That’s big; that’s right, you have to say your in a league of your own, everyone should do the dance. When I do shows, I don’t say that lyric anymore, everyone just does the dance. I like that, but watch out for my new video, there’s gonna be some moves in there still.

So you’re at college - what are you studying? Chipmunk: I’m studying sociology, drama and accounting. That’s serious. How are you balancing the music with your college work - is it hard? Chipmunk: There’s a lot of times when you don’t eat and you don’t sleep, but it’s all about timing. I know I have studio at this time and school work at this time, I know I have to dedicate time to revision as well. How does your mum feel about it? Chipmunk: She’s cool still, they weren’t sure if the music thing was stable in the beginning but now they are seeing that I can balance. They know I’m not dumb - I’m the first person in the family to get good grades still. As your popularity grows, how are people responding to you. Are you still Jahmaal at college? Chipmunk: Yeah, I’m still Jahmaal. Some people call me Chip or Chipmunk; it’s whatever feels natural. I don’t get no superstar treatment in college ‘cause everyone knew me from before innit; I wouldn’t expect that kind treatment happy to hard

of anyway. I’m just see that all of the work has paid off, I have literally slugged my guts off since the age of 14, ask anyone. When all of the artists that are out now were doing their thing, I was the kid with the rucksack who would just run in and take the mic. London Community Gospel Choir

MOVING ON UP! Basil Arrindell began his sales career as a young adult working for just £80 per week. Since those humble beginnings he has become a major player in the advertising field. 32 years later he heads a multi-million pound Hill Davenport company based in the Docklands, providing among other services, big screen media for LARGE prestigious events. ‘I seemed to have a knack for selling’ he said as he reflected on his early days while looking out his Docklands office window. ‘I never wanted anyone to sell more than me; second place simply is not good enough.’

The product of Antiguan and Monserratian parentage, Basil believes he was born with a competitive nature but pays tribute to his family for bringing him up with the skills to succeed. Under the leadership of Basil, Hill Davenport grew to employ over 400 staff in several offices around the globe, including Toronto, Sydney and Shanghai. His first major project was in 1986 when the company sold advertising over the telephone for the ‘Goodwill Games’ in Moscow - an international sporting championship founded by Ted Turner to help combat Cold War tensions. Twenty years ago the concept of telesales was rare. ‘At the time the idea of selling advertising like this was completely unheard of. Many people told me it wasn’t possible, but look at the world of telesales now.’ Basil went on to provide on-screen advertising at the 1994 Atlanta Olympic Games which was, he explains, ‘outdoor television with commercials inbetween.’ ‘There are millions of people watching and they can’t change the channel when the advert comes on! There are great benefits to this type of advertising.’ Hill Davenport were also involved in the Times Square celebrations in New York, and the Monaco Grand Prix and Euro 2008 sporting competitions. The combination of telesales and outside screen advertising proved profitable, and three years ago Basil sold his worldwide business, while keeping his UK operation. But any thoughts of retirement were soon abandoned as Basil itched to get back into the thick of the action. This drive to succeed was an aspect to his character that surfaced as a child when a teacher told him he would never make it in his chosen career. ‘The worst thing you can say to me is ‘you can’t do something’ because I will do everything in my power to prove you wrong.’ He added: ‘I see life like an American football game, once the ball is thrown to you, you have to struggle forward. If you don’t have the kind of strength to hit the blockers, then you must develop skills to get past the obstacles. Most importantly there is no chance to turn back.’
