Daniel Merriweather:
Words: Michelle Adabra
New Kid On The Block Having been mentioned on most of the ‘ones to watch in 2009’ lists last year, much has been made of Daniel Merriweather the 26-yearold Australian soul singer. You may recognise Merriweather as the emotive voice which propelled Mark Ronson’s hit cover of The Smiths Stop Me (If You Think You’ve Heard This One Before) into the charts. Or more recently, crooning about getting ‘skrilla in my wallet’ on Wiley’s infectious Cash In My Pocket.
it like to work with the man with the midas touch? ‘He produced the whole album; we just have a great understanding of each other musically. He’s probably the only producer who I can get in the studio with and not interfere with the production process. Usually you may have to worry about how things sound but not with Mark. It’s quite liberating to be able to sit down and just concentrate on writing the songs.’
into the music, I’ve always been about performing. It’s the most important thing to me in this whole process,’ he says in his intriguing transatlantic accent. It would appear that the UK reciprocates his affection as his second single Red is currently riding high in the singles chart. The track – probably one of the most emotive on the album – demonstrates his stellar writing skills and his bittersweet vocals.

CLUBS Life in Colour talks to DJ I AM aka Akeem DeDream Words: Sophia Jackson
Why and when did you become a DJ? An unadulterated love of music. A simple love. A pure love.
the absolute best and then puts then onto a Mix that you can listen to or/and download and you decide what catches your vibe.
What are the perks of being a DJ?
Top tips for someone who wants to be a DJ?
Lol. It’s different for every DJ. For me it’s about control. The ability to make people shut up, get up and dance, catch their breath and then dance some more, to get them into a euphoria state of wild abandonment, buzzing from the last tune whilst craving with an almost fiendish intent for the next song. It’s musical intercourse.
I’ll say this: research, research and more research, pardon the cliché but knowledge is key, then filter down to what applies to you, and your real reasons for wanting to DJ, the rest will unfold naturally. A good starting point is to go on to YouTube and enter ‘how to DJ’ they have some good stuff on there.
I would choose a new up and coming, DJ, who has put in the work, is dedicated and enjoys what they are doing, to give them the experience and at the same time exposure.
When you’re not a DJ what are you up to? I eat, sleep, secrete and excrete music. It’s what I do. I’m always listening and on the look out for the new and the latest tunes and hunting down old classics, no matter how long you have been djing for there will always be a classic or an elusive remix your trying to get a hold of. I also manage a fast growing company that supplies professional DJs and sound equipment hire for events such as weddings, concerts, clubs, and festivals, virtually any occasion that requires music of any kind, people choose us because of the wide variety of music we cover and our professional manner.
Which fellow dj’s do you rate and why? I will give respect to any DJ that can move the crowd and keep them moving, till they wear out the sole of their shoes and they sweat out their weave. If you can do that regardless of the genre of music you play then you are ‘butter’ as they say in America with extra servings of ‘swagg’ and you have my upmost respect.
What tunes do Life in Colour readers need to look out for this summer? That’s an easy one. Check out www. thelondonmusiccompany.com, they unveil a new DJ mix every week: it’s a site that gets all the new up and coming tunes, filters them through to get the best of
It’s like in any male dominated industry, the same challenges apply. In the same way the one’s who are serious and determined enough make it through, so if you’re female and trying to get on, just keep doing what you doing and ‘go hard’ and make it happen. Impossible is nothing, nothing is impossible.
Where will you be playing over the next few months? The next big event will see me playing at the SaturdayNightLive: American Independence Day Party at Apt Bar in the city of London. If any of your readers want more info they can go to the website and request a complimentary ticket @ www.itssaturdaynightlive.com. On Friday’s you can catch me at Carbon Bar which is next to Marble Arch and On Sundays you can catch me at AGS (AnyGivenSunday) at RubyLo’s in the west end.

Why don’t more women DJ? It’s the biggest DJ gig of the year and you’re headlining, who would you choose to share the limelight?
Tinchy Stryder
Number One Words: Michelle Adabra
Hailing from the ‘spiritual’ home of grime - Bow E3 Tinchy Stryder has come a long way. Under the wing of grime’s Godfather Wiley, Stryder burst onto the underground scene aged just 16. His small stature, rapid delivery and intense flow coupled with some east London swagger made Tinchy a popular feature on pirate radio stations around London. With several underground hits and a promising debut album under his belt, it was merely a matter of time before the rapper made it to the top of the charts. His back to back commercial hits Stryder Man and the number three charting Take Me Back – have already made him a household name. Now 22 (and still 5’1) the rapper – who spent three weeks at number one in the singles chart last month – is currently putting the finishing touches on his sophomore album Catch 22. Michelle Adabra caught up with the busy mc to talk about life on top of the charts, the future of grime and his blooming fashion label.
How are you feeling about your number one record? It’s one of those things that you dream about. When I first heard the news I just couldn’t believe it, I’m very happy right now.
So you’re the first artist in the UK to go to number one with a record called ‘Number One’- not even Kanye and Pharrell could manage that… …I know I heard that I’ve set a record (laughs). I didn’t call it Number One thinking, ‘I’m going to number one’ but it happened anyway so I’m thankful.
You’re currently working on your new album Catch 22– what can we expect from it? It’s like a new sound for me on this album. I’m really experimenting, obviously there are some grime sounding tracks because that’s where I’ve come from but I’ve tried to not limit myself in terms of sound. I didn’t want to go to crazy on the collabos, so far I’ve got a track with N Dubz and Frank Music – who are both
doing big things in the UK right now.
You’ve been dubbed the ‘prince of grime’; do you still see yourself as a grime artist? Well yeah I’ve come from the grime scene, so that will always be a part of me. Obviously the singles I’ve released recently aren’t really grime but they connect more with the public. Things are changing; there are a lot of artists from the grime scene who are making different types of music now. I never called myself that name, it was given to me but at the end of the day I have come from the grime scene and I’ll always be proud of that.
Like you said a lot of grime artists are moving in other directions - do you think there still is a thriving grime scene? The people at the top of the grime scene do seem to be moving in other directions however I’ve been writing and spitting since I was 13. I can look back now and see a new wave of kids coming up and doing their thing in grime and these kids are going to experiment and take the music even further than we did.
You’re quite the entrepreneur, your Star In The Hood range has really taken off… Yeah, we’ve sold over 10,000 t-shirts now and have moved onto hoodies, there will also be a girl’s range out soon. Donae’o: Party Hard
Exclusive album playback review Words: Michelle Adabra
Don-a-eo, Don-a-eo! If you’ve been clubbing in the last 12 months it’s safe to say that you’ve partied to at least one of Donae’o’s now classic club anthems. He’s been dubbed the voice of the UK club scene and we’re not arguing with the title. His infectious songs, Devil In a Blue Dress, African Warrior and Party Hard have already clocked up over a million combined hits on Youtube, making the north London based singer/producer hot property. He’s already collaborated with the likes of The Streets, Craig David and Lethal Bizzle but what we really wanted to know is, where’s the album?
– a stand out track on a near flawless album, is already starting to gain momentum in the underground. Let’s hope it’s a future single - as it sounds like a hit!
Elsewhere, the sexy Over You is more of a departure from his signature sound. Proving that he is not a one trick pony - this smooth r&b Donae’o on Party Hard: groove is guaranteed to be a hit ‘I went home, voiced the with the ladies.
track, added a little bit of me and put it out as a freestyle. ..the track blew up.’
Rest assured my party people - as finally after much anticipation - his album Party Hard is about to land. LIC magazine was present at an exclusive album playback, in a secret central London venue to bring you the gist on what may well be the club album of the year. Similar to the Godfather of UK dance, Wookie - Donae’o has a canny knack for making conscious dance music. His lyrics on many of the tracks demonstrate depth and thought. Having a bad day? African Warrior or the smooth and soulful ‘I’ will get you through any upset. ‘I’
Donae’o’s expressive vocals take centre stage on Over You while on the title track Party Hard – he shows us all exactly why he’s the king of the clubs right now.
The ultra talented producer penned all the album’s lyrics and constructed 90 per cent of the music and his hard work has certainly paid off. Party Hard is a brilliant collection of imaginative club bangers. Donae’o had one thought in mind when he was making this album and that was to make you party hard! If you don’t have this in your music collection you’re missing out on the soundtrack to the summer. The album Party Hard is out June 8

comprehending each and every word you still get the gist of what’s going on. The production contains all the colour and music you would expect from a Bollywood inspired performance and the songs being mined by the actors rather than being sung live gives it that quintessential Bollywood feel. The story is also narrated by two vagabond looking characters and while this narration is relevant to the progression of the story, at times it does feel a little redundant as they end up telling you things you’ve figured out for yourself.

Wuthering Heights, Lyric, Hammersmith Reviewed by Karla Williams
Youkti Patel stands out as the strongest performer with her portrayal of the headstrong and determined Shakuntala and Rina Fatania provides much of the laughs as the stereotypical Asian mother character, Ayah.
Based upon the book written by Deepak Verma (better known as Sanjay from EastEnders) which took its inspiration from the Emily Bronte novel, Wuthering Heights sees the original storyline between Cathy and Heathcliff given a dash of Garam masala. The traditional love story is transported from the Yorkshire Moors to Rajasthan India where Cathy is now Shakuntala (Patel) and Heathcliff becomes Krishan, (Chani) whom Shakuntala’s father brought home after finding him wondering the street of Bombay.
Wuthering Heights is a fun and entertaining production that the whole family can enjoy and will make a real treat for fans of Tamasha or the Bollywood genre.
The script includes both Hindi and English but this doesn’t hinder your overall understanding but rather has a similar effect to that of Shakespeare - while you are left not fully
Wuthering Heights is on tour until 20 June.
Wuthering Heights is based on the novel by Emily Bronte and is directed by Kristine Landon-Smith. Cast Includes: Divian Ladwa, Youkti Patel, Rina Fatania and Pushpinder Chani.

THEATRE Theatre interview with Nonso Anozie, Death and the King’s Horseman By Karla Williams
N
onso Anozie is a force to be reckoned with – literally. Standing at well over 6ft tall, the immensely talented and award winning actor has had starring roles in productions of Othello and King Lear and was the youngest actor to ever play King Lear in a professional production. He has also had roles in the films RocknRolla, Atonement and forthcoming BBC Film Occupation proving he has the ability to work across screen and stage. Amidst rehearsals for the National Theatre production of Death and the King’s Horseman by Wole Soyinka, he took some time out to talk with Afridiziak Theatre News about his remarkable career.
You’re in rehearsals for Death and the King’s Horsemen. How’s it going?
It’s been an amazing experience. I’ve worked here [The National Theatre] before with Kenneth Branagh in 2003, but this time to come here and do a play that is written by a Nigerian playwright. I’m also playing Elesin who is this Nigerian chief which is a great responsibility. When I was little
I used to go to the library and there was this guy called Lord Eric and the Sugomoto, he was kind of like a story teller. He used to tell these stories and he would do it in such a way that would bring it to life and as soon as I read this script it just reminded me of that.
What is Death and the King’s Horsemen about?
It is set in Nigeria, which is a colony of Great Britannia, and is based on true events that happened but not exactly at the right time that they happened. When the king dies the tradition is that his horseman (Elesin) must commit ritual suicide to accompany him to the afterlife. He has to do this at a specific time, ordained by the cycle of the moon, so there is one night that he can do it and one night alone. The district office in charge hears about this and attempts to stop this ritual from happening as he can’t have anybody commit suicide. But the play is really about the two cultures colliding and what is going to happen if this guy succeeds in stopping Elesin.
THEATRE
What attracted you to the character of Elesin?
want do something or just make a change in their life that is much more important that an award. For example, the last film I did Cass, one young guy told me he changed his life as he used to walk around with a tool in his pocket but now he doesn’t and Cass was the tipping point to him doing that.
You were the youngest person to play King Lear, was that a constant pressure for you?
In your Screen Nation Awards speech you said ‘To God be the glory.’ What role does God play in your life and career?
He’s got the greatest story within in the piece. I’m about telling stories and I really want to get my tongue around loads of words and engage an audience. Of all the parts in this play this is the one that stood out for me because he drives the story.
When we first got offered the job we weren’t told what parts we were going to play. So we had a period where we just did workshops so they could get a good sense of exactly how we worked. And then two weeks into it Declan [Donnellan, the director] said I want you to play King Lear and I was like ‘Wow... being at the RSC and on the Swan Stage’. But something about the way he works makes you comfortable with it because you feel like you’re all in the same boat, even though you’re the lead. Something about that has given me the confidence to go forward and dive into things, even when I have that initial fear.
I read a quote that said “You have never been a struggling actor and probably never will be” is that true?
Everybody goes through struggles. But in terms of struggling actor and lack of work, there hasn’t been for me. That’s partly due because I’m an unusual shape and size and ability which makes it easier for me to get into work.
You are an award-winning actor, how do you feel about that? (Slight pause) I feel very, very blessed. Awards are great because people tend to look at you slightly differently but really if I can inspire somebody to get into this business or
A pivotal role. He is central to my life. I’m a Christian and I attend church every Sunday. I always put God first in whatever I do.
Finally, what would you say is the key to your success? (Long pause) Faith in God and hard work!

Cottons Caribbean Restaurant:
Rhum Jungle Reviewed by Sophia A Jackson
If you fancy an after work catch-up with your nearest and dearest in a serene environment whilst tucking into a sumptuous Caribbean feast then head to Cotton’s, Islington. However, if you would prefer to soak up some live music instead whilst indulging in some fine Caribbean cuisine then you can head to the same venue. This two in one eatery has something for everyone, but for my guest and I it was all about the live music downstairs in the Rhum Jungle. Tonight, (Friday, 22 May) an eclectic mix of talented singers of all ages provided an atmospheric dining experience as the attentive staff happily suggested food and drink options to perfect the evening. With a unique rum menu from around the world and an equally vast cocktail menu it was difficult to choose a suitable beverage but in the end my Jamaican heritage got the better of me and I had to try the Raas Berry Special (6.50) – a refreshing drink that reminded me of a Mojito. My guest had a traditional Mai Tai and a Bounty Hunter, a lot more girlie than it sounds. To eat, we shared the crabmeat and scallop spring rolls with plum sauce and papaya coulis (5.25) and the slow roasted pork belly with a sweet ginger glaze on a herbed cassava cake with caramel sauce to start. The pork stood out for being succulent and juicy. For main, we felt like we should have skipped our starter such was the ample portions of the jerked leg of lamb steak with caramelised onion and potato bake, jerk butter and Roasted aubergines in a spiced tomato-shallot sauce (13.50) and the nice and spicy jerk chicken. Well at least you know you’re getting value
for money though which is important in these tough financial times. For the finale (all desserts 4.50) I went for the safe option with the chocolate brownie with black cherries marinated in kirsch and pistachio ice cream but the winning dessert had to be the pear and raisin tart with lychee compot and vanilla ice cream – delicious. If you’ve over-indulged then shake off those extra calories on the Rhum Jungle dance-floor where djs spin the latest reggae, soul, funk, lovers rock, r&b, soca and funky house. Cotton’s Caribbean Restaurant and Rhum Jungle, 70 Exmouth Market, London EC1: www.cottons-restaurant. co.uk. It’s happy hour 5-8pm and 11–12pm.

Singleholic: Here Kitty Kitty… Looking for love in London down, then up at him, then down again.’
Bloody hell. Why am I always late? I rush in and find a seat in the front row of the ‘Get the Guy’ seminar. Jacquie insists it’ll transform my life. There I am, sitting in a sea of women, fumbling around, trying to get my coat off without making too much of a fuss, when the crowd lets out a gasp. I look up. Matthew Hussey, the guy running the seminar, is taking off his jacket.
course. Somehow you have to draw the man in. Matthew laughs. ‘You women are terrifying! We guys are petrified of going up to a girl and talking to her because you’ll laugh in our faces!’
Calm down girls. Jesus. Remember we’re not desperate: we’re goddesses. Goddesses don’t gasp. And certainly not at our trainer who is meant to be helping us! But damn, this guy certainly works out…
Apparently, looking and smiling isn’t good enough. No. Smile all you want girls and for some guys, he’ll still be too scared to approach. Huh? So what are we meant to do? Matthew winks.
Focus Sarah, focus. Back to business. Notepad, pen. I cross my legs and try to look as studious as possible.
‘Smiling and looking are essential. But it’s all in the way that you smile and look.’
I wonder if it’s any different if the guy is black or white, or indeed brown? I can’t wait to try it out. Here Kitty Kitty… have I got a smile for you…
The topic is picking up guys in a bar. How is it done? As a woman, you can’t do the chatting-up yourself of
I twist in my seat, eager for the rest. ‘When you look at a guy, you can’t just look at him. Instead, first look
Singleholic is available at Amazon and bookshops: www.singleholic.com
We giggle. So how do you make a guy feel secure enough to ask you out? How do you look approachable?
You mean that’s ? ‘No, there’s a step two. A minute later, you look back, but this time when he catches you looking, you smile to yourself, as if you’ve been caught out. And then step three: look back and smile.’ Sitting there, quietly taking notes, I look to the ceiling. The sun suddenly breaks the cloudy sky. The rays pierce through the grey and I have to shut my eyes.
LiC Book Review: June 2009 Singleholic written by Katherine Bing Reviewed by Yvonne Bryan Singleholic, was a great read for me, whilst travelling to work on the train, I had to contain any form of raucous laughter, because some of her descriptions of the characters and environment were so real and true to life that I could almost feel like I was a living being in her pages and experiencing the moment with her.
opinion on marriage.
Her realisation of the beauty and importance of friendships, irrespective of nationality or colour was so endearing. The discovery that love has no colour boundaries whilst searching for a soul mate jumps out at you.
Whilst reading this book I took the time to look at myself, amazed at the conclusions I came to, with this excellent, funny and fulfilling read.
Also, the way she pointed out the difficultly she experienced as a mixed race child growing up in society today, and the acknowledgement of her black mother’s
All of these realisations took our Singleholic writer Katherine through her own rite of passage, and she discovered characteristics about herself that she did not know existed and revealed that being single is not a disease, it can be and is such a blessing.
When a writer can make me laugh and keep me glued to their book making me feel that I am part of the story, shows say that a the write took time to get to know her audience. I say well done to Katherine Bing on her first novel.

St Lucia
St Kitts
Originally named St Christopher after the patron saint of travellers, where 9 fortresses once guarded the precious island’s coastline, St Kitts has culture, history and remarkable sights to offer as well as the cool calm lifestyle typical of the beautiful Caribbean. Upon arriving at St Kitts you will notice the impressive capital of the island ‘Basseterre’ and its wealth of eye pleasing attractive charm. One of the most desirable capitals in the Caribbean claimed its status from protection of the local area with up to 9 Forts guarding the islands. Today you will see the preserved Brimstone Hill fortress, a grand structure and now a world heritage site.

Adventurers will love the range of activities on offer such as mountain biking, climbing and trekking. Those looking to relax a little more can be pampered at spas or simply soak in the sun on a platinum beach.
