LOGAN SAMA Life in Colour talks to Kiss FM DJ
Words: Michelle Adabra
When did you become a DJ? I’ve been djing professionally since 2003. It was a hobby for me at first; I used to listen to Garage and slowly started to get into Grime. I ended up buying a couple of records and some cheap decks and just started mixing for fun. What would you be doing if you weren’t a DJ? Before I became a DJ I was at university doing a maths and physics degree but I didn’t really know what I was doing! I was quite decent at maths actually... What attracts you to Grime? I don’t really analyse it too deeply but if I like it- I like it. Grime is still exciting for me - there’s something I get from Grime that I don’t get from anywhere else. The thing people don’t realise about Grime is: when it’s done well, it has the best of every music genre in it.
Has the genre been ignored by the mainstream? I think Grime is under rewarded. Before everyone was going on like Wiley charting was the greatest thing ever. Don’t get me wrong I was happy for him but he’s made like 300 records in his career and I can name about 25 of those that are revolutionary artistically speaking but Rolex was the one that got through. Would you like to see more Grime in the national charts? I’m not worried about the national charts but I would like to see the scene become a lot more stable. I always say that I don’t do this because I’m looking to become a millionaire, I’d just like to be able to support a family and pay a mortgage but I do get huge enjoyment from
what I do. The artists need to earn a decent living out of this too and at the moment there isn’t an opportunity for that. It’s either get signed and blow up or be poor living off mixtapes. There’s no middle ground in the scene. I don’t want to see Grime become pop music; I just want to see the music generate a scene where people get rewarded financially for working hard. Why does the Grime scene carry such a negative stigma? People are intimidated by what they don’t know but Grime has a problem because of the people who make it and listen to it, it’s not the music – it’s the people around it. There are some artists in Grime who would be committing crime if they weren’t making music, that’s why the music is important.
Your Kiss Fm show has a bit of a cult following... ...Yeah I have some dedicated listeners out there! These guys know their stuff, Grime fans in general are really loyal and hardcore and so I’m careful about what I play. How can a new artist get your attention? Some new artists don’t pay enough attention to the underground. Get your buzz going so people are putting pressure on the radio stations and DJs are interested. I’m the best at what I do but I don’t think that I need to be the only person you should be paying attention to if you are an artist. There are other DJs out there who should also be priority. Contact every DJ you can think of and don’t ignore the pirate radio DJs. Catch Logan on Kiss FM every Monday night 11pm to 1am.

Bashy had a phenomenal 2008 which saw his anthem Black Boys become an instant classic and receive mass acclaim for its positive message. His theme song to the hit Brit flick Adulthood entered the national singles chart and was also nominated for a Best Video MOBO award. Now the 24-year-old rapper with the commanding voice is up against his biggest challenge: releasing his debut album. Catch Me If You Can is Bashy’s official introduction to the world, featuring production from Toddla T and long time collaborator Naughty Boy plus guest vocals from Jamelia and Dappy from N-Dubz - it looks like he has a certified hit on his hands. LIC caught up with the talented rapper to talk about the new album, his clothing range and becoming famous.
Your album has just been released - how are you feeling about it? I’m excited; it’s good times for a lot of UK acts right now. The scene has shifted a bit so the light is really being shone on UK acts. This is a great time to put out a album and just push it as hard as you can. The response to my album so far has been phenomenal, there’s a lot of people talking about it. Sometimes you can make something which you think is banging and then you put it out and people aren’t feeling it but it’s like people are reading my mind on this album - the feedback from all around is so positive. The album has been a long time coming, why the delay? I just wanted to make sure I got it right, I didn’t want to rush it hence the beard (laughs). I felt that I was still developing as an artist - I’m still developing now. I’m still growing and I think that’s what it was - I needed to grow to a certain point before I could do it. Do you think the UK music industry is in a good place right now? I think it’s very healthy at the moment and it’s only going to get better. We’re the new generation of artists coming through and I think we’re going to do things that will change the face of British music.
So do you think it will be easier for artists such as yourself to break through into the top ten? I don’t think it’s necessarily about your chart place anymore because chart success is not what the numbers are. Take N-Dubz, they’ve sold way over 400,000 copies of their album and they haven’t had a top 5 really. So I think it’s about selling albums, touring, clothing making yourself a brand.
The track Black Boys really opened doors for you - how has it changed your life? I think Black Boys was the beginning of the journey which has allowed me to end up where I am now. It did allow the doors to be open a bit more, they’re still not fully open but we’re working on that. The track opened me up to a wider audience, it was a positive track and I think that’s why people liked it so much.
‘We’re the new generation of artists coming through and I think we’re going to do things that will change the face of British music.’ Speaking of brands, tell me about your clothing label Bish Bash Bosh. Bish Bash Bosh is more than just a clothing label, it’s a lifestyle. We’ve got the first Bish Bash Bosh black limited edition range out now and the next line will follow later this year. It’s been getting a really good response; people keep telling me how much they like the design. You’re very open on your online blog which has become extremely popular - has this ever got you into trouble? Not trouble, i’m a grown man (laughs) but it has raised a few eyebrows and I’ve had a few conversations but it’s all good.
What’s on your iPod at the moment? I’m listening to so much different stuff at the moment. I’ve been listening to Rick Ross’s new album Deeper Than Rap, I’ve also been listening to a lot of Drake. I’ve got a little funky house on here - I like a little bit of everything, whatever speaks to me. Your profile is rising very quickly - are you worried about becoming famous? I don’t know, I don’t really think I’m famous - I don’t know what other people think. To me, I’m still doing me - if you get me; not that much has changed. Yes, I do get recognised more and stopped on the street for autographs and pictures but it comes with it I guess. You either know how to deal with it or you don’t. I think the trick is not to pay too much attention to the ‘being famous’ part of the music game. What about simple things like having a girlfriend? Would that be hard for you to do at this stage in your career? Right now I just want to concentrate on the music, that’s my main goal. Catch Me If You Can is out now.

Roger Robinson’s National Reading Tour: Suckle
Suckle, is a new collection of poems published this summer by Waterways Books, Suckle is a vivid and poignant homage to the author’s formative years, memories and experiences. Roger Robinson’s autobiographical work moves evocatively through a wide range of moods and moments with deft lyricism and humour. Failed attempts at hip hop dance moves as a youth bring humour whereas the relationships between fathers and sons a solemn touch. With atmospheric glances at Caribbean spiritualism and the plight of Caribbean women seen from the author’s unique viewpoint, words work with rhythm, sass, and self-deprecating wit remaining accessible throughout, a trait that has earned Robinson an international following and multiple accolades.

Book review: Suckle by Roger Robinson Reviewed by Femi Fola
Roger Robinson has been hailed as one of the most influential black writers of the past 50 years in Britain; garnering awards and acclaim worldwide for his poetry, while sustaining a large fan base for his energetic live performances. His new collection, Suckle, provides a beautifully rendered, panoramic portrait of his Trinidadian roots, evoking everything from tin shacks and inclemental weather to modern day sex tourism and past slavery. Robinson displays great skill in changing perspective to give the full range of experience. At points, such as with ‘haircut’ and the poignant ‘Nest’ you get a sense of the child figuring out the world around him, confused and dealing tentatively with mortality. At other times he can take on a female persona, most strikingly in ‘The Misuse of Magic,’ a fragmented piece that touches upon the subject of abuse. But while never shying away from darker topics, Suckle in essence is a celebration of the past and how it lives on in the present. Through the poems we understand not only what is remembered but also how he remembers it. Sight, sounds and smells all combine to evoke his recollections, ‘It’s the punch-a-crème filled with condensed milk and rum so thick you wait for it to pour itself/It’s the stale breath of cigarettes, rum and coke on uncles who stab themselves with needles dripping insulin.’ However, while his memory takes him back amongst the atmosphere of family, friends and neighbours, Robinson simultaneously steps out to view the whole. ‘The End of the Bread Van’ for instance manages to link close friendship, poverty, local crime and oil company exploitation in a humorous manner; charting a none-too-smart protagonist carrying out an unsuccessful stick-up with his mother’s stockings on his head. Robinson, above all, is a consummate artist who effortlessly shines a light on all corners of experience with great understanding and humanity. Its his non-judgemental, nonobstructive stance that let his words stand for their own; creating in your mind images of people, places and actions that are as boldly outlined as his poems are boldly crafted. Suckle in magnificently realising a Trinidadian past-helps elevate your spirit to a place where many would physically wish to be this summer. In these financially straightened times though, you could do a lot worse than curl up with this collection, at home or otherwise. Roger Robinson’s Suckle is available from late July 2009 and is accompanied by a national reading tour. Published courtesy of www.afridiziak.com/theatrenews

Religion is for the benefit of the masses, not for brain-box types like you. Those simpletons require strict rules for living, otherwise they would still think the earth sits on three fishes. But you mind-wallahs must know it’s a lot of balls. An Asian kid from Kent goes to college in London and teams up with a sympathetic group of anti-racists. But it’s 1989, the year of the fatwa, and as Shahid begins a hedonistic affair with his lecturer, his radical Muslim friends want to steer him away from the decadence of the West.
We’re not blasted Christians. We don’t turn the other buttock. We will fight for our people who are being tortured anywhere – in Palestine, Afghanistan, Kashmir, East End! Hanif Kureishi’s witty stage adaptation of his strikingly prescient and acclaimed novel, The Black Album, humorously considers how the events of 1989 have shaped today’s world, where fundamentalism battles liberalism. It’s a while since we’ve seen you in London, how are you finding your trip? It’s been about 16 years since I last came to London and it’s changed a lot although I haven’t seen much of it but I also managed a trip to France over the weekend. So has the trip been worth combating your fear of flying? Yes, because we need to move the show forward and I want to help get it into people’s head and to make sure people understand I’m not in it and the music is different. Alan Menken, who has won about a zillion awards, re-wrote the score and it’s fantastic. Patina Miller, who plays Deloris, is really good, an amazing girl and alongside Sheila Hancock, they will take Sister Act to a new level.
So why did you get involved and how does your involvement work with you being stateside? They asked me to be part of it so I said ‘sure’. I live in New York so they send me updates and videos of rehearsals and I send them my notes or I call them. Some of my notes they take on board and others they don’t. That’s how we keep it moving. How are you feeling about the progress of the show? It’s going well and once we take rehearsals to inside the theatre (London Palladium) it will take it to the next level, particularly this theatre. How is the stage production different? Well Deloris is younger, she’s much younger (laughs) than I was, the policeman, Eddie, and her boyfriend’s story is more developed. Deloris is not a failed singer which is what I was. She’s more of an up and coming singer than in the film. She sees a murder and has to hide and is taken in by the nuns and then it’s the same from there. What do you want to say to people expecting to see more of the film in the stage adaptation? It can’t be the same because I’m not in it. We want people to understand this is a new version, not a remake, a new rendition of Sister Act. The music is still the music you love and it’s a great, family-friendly show for all ages from children to old people - you can bring them. What are your favourite musicals? I love all musicals and I love the idea that people can burst into song as I think that’s what people want which is why we have iPods. You’ve had a successful career and won many awards, how do you feel about your achievements? I just gotta chuckle. I’m not doing it for awards, but because I want to do it. It’s nice to be acknowledged. My ego is healthy enough to say that I must have something to do with the fact that three films (The Color Purple, Sister Act and Ghost) I’ve been in have
gone to stage and the thing they all have in common is me. That says a lot. So what’s the secret to your success? I have no idea; I just get up there and hope for the best. Outside of showbiz success what’s your most personal achievement? My most personal achievement? I have no idea, girl. I had a great kid who has great children and she’s a great mom, that would be up there. It’s a while since you’ve made a movie, when will we see you on the big screen again? I don’t know - if something comes along that knocks me out then I’ll do it but I have this day job which keeps me pretty busy (The View). You’ve worked on various mediums across film, TV, radio and stage but where does your heart lie? My heart lies wherever the cheque won’t bounce. Yes, sometimes they do bounce when people don’t wanna tell you they’ve run out of money – it would be easier
THEATRE
if they told you they were having problems. I like to do anything I can to keep myself amused and enjoy my life. And, as a comic, who amuses you? Richard Pryor, Chris Rock and Robin Williams.
Is there any chance we’ll get to see you do stand up over here? It’s difficult because of my commitment to The View and they have me for another three years but I’ll bear it in mind. Sister Act the Musical is at the London Palladium and taking bookings until April, 2010.

Theatre review:
Sister Act the Musical, London Palladium Reviewed by Sophia Jackson Whoopi Goldberg’s 90s movie, Sister Act, has been reborn as a musical and what a joyous rendition of the successful film it is. The plot doesn’t stray too much from the original but it is Sister Act with a difference. Deloris is a singer on the verge of the big time but her gangster boyfriend, Curtis, is more of a hindrance than an aid to her pending success. One night after another one of her loser boyfriend’s failed promises of an A&R coming to hear her perform and snapping up the songstress, she witnesses a murder that Curtis is embroiled in.
One disappointment too many Deloris flees the scene and heads straight to the police station where her childhood friend and police officer, the unfortunate sweaty Eddie convinces her that the best place for her to hide is within the confines of a convent. Goldberg’s Deloris is played by a feisty Patina Miller who leads the show and is magnificent throughout. Her vocals are powerful and she gives the part her all. Miller sparkles as much as her glitzy and somewhat outlandish wardrobe in the show. A little slow in parts at first, the show comes alive as does
the convent when Deloris descends on Mother Superior (Sheila Hancock) with her crass ways and outspoken attitude but there’s no denying the immediate transformation of nun life as she causes havoc and life as they know it becomes a thing of the past. Deloris is set to task with using her God-given singing talent on working on the nun choir. The nuns are having so much fun as Deloris leads the shrinking violets, that the audience can only join in the frivolity by tapping their feet and clapping their hands to the roof-raising anthems inspired by gospel, Motown soul and 70s disco. This is a big budget production with a fun musical score, breath-taking set
designs and the same wit that was found in the film version. Look out for the gradual glamourisation of the nuns and their habits. As the story gathers momentum so to do their habits become more fabulous. If you liked the film then you’ll love the stage adaptation. This is one for all the family and a sure hit for the summer and beyond. A class act with sisters doing it for themselves and a well deserved standing ovation keeps the audience on a high long after the curtain call. Published, courtesy of www. afridiziak.com/theatrenews

The notorious and infamous Khoisan, Koos Sas was accused of murdering a shopkeeper in Montagu, South African in 1917. In this musical work, Koos Sas is re-imagined as a rebellious hero – a thorn in the side of the farmers and the state. Shot as an outlaw, he was the last of what the authorities considered to be “bushmen robbers” of the previous century. Koos Sas is a love story played out against the background of racism and subjugation, a celebration or pre-industrial innocence, from the award winning company that brought you Kat and the Kings and Spice Drum Beat: Ghoema. Once on This Island - Hackney Empire transforms itself into a tropical paradise...
This summer, as more and more people say they’ll be staying in London for their summer holidays, Hackney Empire will be whisking us away to hotter climates as they stage their big musical blockbuster, the Caribbean delight Once on this Island. Filled with infectious calypso and reggae rhythms, this full scale production (which is being billed as their summer panto), was originally performed on Broadway in 1990 and then in the West End in 1994. It has won both a Tony and an Olivier (the theatre industry equivalent to an Oscar) and this new version, directed by Hackney Pantomime writer and director Susie McKenna, promises to be the theatrical event of the summer. The story begins as a hurricane hits a Caribbean island. A frightened child is distracted with the story of an orphan girl who grew up to fall in love with a rich
young man. After saving his life following a car crash, she sets off to find him, convinced that love will conquer barriers of class and racial prejudice. Although this musical fairytale is essentially a feel good summer spectacular, it is not afraid to tackle some important issues. “It’s a show that I’ve wanted to do for a very long time” explains Susie McKenna, “What drew me to this musical was that the two American writers (Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty) don’t shy away from difficult subjects, but they approach them in a way that is incredibly exciting”. And exciting it is. McKenna has brought together a stellar cast that includes Melanie La Barrie (Mary Poppins, Les Miserable) and Sharon D Clarke, best known for her appearances in Holby City and as a judge on last year’s Last Choir Standing. Clarke, who also appeared in the recent Hackney Empire pantomime Mother Goose, is reprising her 1994 role as Asaka, for which she received an Olivier Award nomination “This story has always been very close to my heart and I jumped at the chance to be part of it once again” explains Clarke “This production is very different from previous versions and focuses more on the characters and storytelling”. Clarke’s voice is truly incredible. She has starred in We Will Rock You, Chicago and The Lion King to name but a few and has enjoyed chart success with 90s group Nomad (most famous for [I wanna give you]... Devotion). In Once on this Island, her role is all encompassing; alongside outstanding singing and dancing, she blends powerful godlike qualities with a motherly tenderness, something that seems to radiate from Clarke off stage too as she explains: “This is a story essentially about love and with all the madness that is happening in the world it’s great for people to be reminded about love”. We couldn’t agree more. Once on this Island opens at the Hackney Empire on Thu 24 July and runs until Sun 16 August. To book tickets visit www.hackneyempire.co.uk or call 020 8985 2424. Party with the cast at the Caribbean Cabaret after the show Thursday – Saturday. Hackney Empire, 291 Mare Street, London E8 1EJ Info: www.hackneyempire.co.uk

In his London debut solo exhibition, Nigerian artist Tunde Owolabi presents a series of ethereal paintings and photographs exploring the vibrant semiotic nature of African cultural identity. This multi-media exhibit investigates the preservation of the unique beauty of the African in contemporary art. Tunde embraces recycled daily newspapers such as the Metro and creatively transforms the medium into exquisite 3 dimensional masks. The use of African symbolism is encapsulated in shapes and motifs, further expressed in the layers of vibrant and earth colours, which are a powerful feature in the series of paintings and photography. Tunde Owolabi’s compelling work captures the essence of ethnicity and tradition in a series of powerful pieces that are rich in symbolism and evoke the aesthetic of African traditions. The Artist is inspired by the passage of time, the global exchange of information and how these elements inform the perception of African identity in the Diaspora. Notorious
Reviewed by Sophia A Jackson Notorious, is a movie that pays homage to one of hip hop’s finest, Notorious B.I.G, real name, Christopher Wallace and if you’re a fan of the influential lyricist then this film won’t disappoint. But if you’re looking for answers as to why his death was so untimely then you’re better off Googling
Shirin
A hundred and fourteen famous Iranian theatre and cinema actresses and a French star: mute spectators at a theatrical representation of Khosrow and Shirin, a Persian poem from the twelfth century, put on stage by Kiarostami. The development of the text -- long a favourite in Persia and the Middle East -- remains invisible to the viewer of the film, the whole story is told by the faces of the women watching the show.
and reading up on the many conspiracy theories surrounding his murder. The film centres on Biggie’s rise to success and delves into his troubled life as a teenager, becoming a drug dealer and a father at a young age. His passion for music led him to Sean ‘Puffy / P Diddy’ Combs’ (Derek Luke) office and from there his life made a dramatic turn around which eventually led to his murder. The Notorious cast is strong and tight. Young Biggie (aged 8-13) is played by his real life son, Christopher Jordan Wallace. Adult B.I.G is played by Jamal Woolard, also a rapper. There is a remarkable resemblance to Biggie Smalls and he walks and talks just like him, too. Angela Bassett plays Biggie’s mom, Voletta Wallace, with grace and ease. It seems Biggie was always a hit with the ladies as we see his relationships with Lil Kim (Naturi Naughton) and Faith Evans (Antonique Smith) played out on the screen, also. Biggie struggles to manage his personal relationships, keep his feet on the ground as the rise to the top unsteadies and changes him and the whole money, power; respect on the streets thing takes its toll. This film is one for the collection if you’re a fan of this super talented, hip hop heavyweight’s music, you might not learn anything new but it’s an interesting albeit questionable portrayal of an unforgettable rapper whose death, like the late Tupac Shakur’s, continues to mystify. Soul Power
Soul Power is a verité documentary, entirely composed of footage shot in 1974 at the legendary music festival (dubbed “Zaire ’74”). It shows the experiences and performances of such musical luminaries as James Brown, BB King, Bill Withers, Celia Cruz, Miriam Makeba, among a host of others. At the peak of their talents and the height of their careers, these artists were inspired by this return to their African roots, as well as the enthusiasm of the Zairian audience, to give the performances of their lives. The concert has achieved mythological significance as the definitive Africa(n)-American musical event of the 20th Century. Info: www.soulpowerfilm.co.uk

Brüno
Reviewed by Sophia A Jackson I won’t lie to you. I was all geared up to completely slate Brüno by and starring crude funny man Sacha Baron Cohen and it pains me to write this but I loved it. It almost seems naughty to admit to this but the film is so outrageously offensive that you become immune to it. Cohen is Brüno, an Austrian, gay fashion reporter who falls from grace. The film charts his Hollywood experience and his quest to make the biggest come back of all time - to be bigger and more famous than ever before. Ultimately, the movie is a mockery of the lengths some people will go to to achieve celebrity status even if it means converting from being homosexual to heterosexual. It laughs in the face of the likes of Madonna and Angelina Jolie and their quest to adopt as many African babies as possible in one lifetime. There are laugh out loud moments aplenty and you may even shed a tear, such is the genius of BaronCohen’s on point comedy. There are some shocking moments in the film so let me warn you that to truly enjoy Brüno you’ll need to take an open mind and a pinch of salt because it’s not for the easily offended or the prudish. Even I was left with my mouth wide open on several occasions as I questioned how Cohen was allowed to get away with some of the things he does, says and makes other people do. However, in light of pop legend, Michael Jackson’s death the version you will see won’t include the clip where he interviews LaToya Jackson and steals Michael’s number from her mobile phone. The movie makers decided to make the cut just hours before it premiered in Hollywood, the day MJ died. I guess they do have some morals after all.
ADAM DEACON
KID TO ADULTHOOD Words: Michelle Adabra
You may recognise east London bred Adam Deacon from his ground breaking performance in smash Brit flick Kidulthood. The half Egyptian, half English actor was catapulted into the limelight after his gritty performance of ‘Jay’ the troubled thug, caught the nation’s attention at a time when knife crime sat high on the media’s agenda. However it was the sequel Adulthood, that really demonstrated his acting abilities and placed him in the ‘ones to watch’ list alongside Bill star Aml Ameen and another shooting star Noel Clarke . Deacon was 12 when he started acting at the at the Anna Scher Theatre, now 26 – the actor has amassed quite a portfolio, having starred in Spooks, E4’s thriller Dead Set and forthcoming ITV1 drama Gunrush. The multi talented actor is also a budding MC and is currently working on his debut album which is due for release later this year. LIC caught up with him to talk about acting, knife crime and why he wants to star in EastEnders.
What was your first acting job? My first job was a film called Face, it had Robert Carlisle in it. I only had one line in it and when I took my family to the cinema – the line had been cut out. So I realised then that’s they way the acting business is sometimes but that was my first real acting role! You studied at Anna Scher, what was that like? Anna Scher wasn’t like your typical drama school. I would go there after school; it was a bit like Sylvia Young but for people with less money! It was a way for kids from the streets, from estates like me to get into acting, without that place I don’t know what I’d be doing. I auditioned for Kidulthood when I was at Anna Scher’s. Have you always wanted to be an actor? I knew from school that I wanted to be an actor – it was the only subject I liked. I knew that’s what I wanted to do but I didn’t know how to get into it and then somebody told me about Anna Schers. What was good about it was, you would just go there to train and not even notice that there were casting directors watching you.
By the time I was 13 I had done a few jobs and people had told me that I had the talent to make it – so that’s what got me on the straight and narrow. Were you a bad boy in school? I wasn’t bad but if I hadn’t got into acting I don’t know what would
have become of me because school just wasn’t working out for me. I was getting excluded – not for big things but apart from music and acting none of the subjects held my attention. Luckily my school was very good about my acting and really encouraged me. Would you be interested in starring in something like EastEnders? Yes most definitely. Right now that’s exactly what I want to do. I think there are issues they haven’t touched on properly yet – like the whole knife crime thing. When EastEnders first started in the 80s it was very relevant, they touched on huge social issues. Like remember when Nick Cotton was a drug addict? Or when Mark Fowler contracted HIV, now it’s a bit more comedic and I think for a show that’s supposed to be set in east London it doesn’t truly represent that community. I’d love to go on there and change it up a bit. I get so many messages from people saying: ‘why aren’t you in EastEnders?’ People think I don’t want to do it but I’m definitely interested if you’re reading casting directors!
they are not supposed to be doing that but that’s not why they do it. They do it for respect; they feel that they need protection and that it makes them somebody on the street. Everyone says build more youth clubs but the kids still have to go back to their council estates at night – what they need is provisions for the future. I think we need places where kids can learn skills that can transfer into a job or a career – industry insiders should be at these places to spot the kids who can be taken and trained. Just like at Anna Scher, I knew that if I stuck to it and carried on there would be a chance that I may get a job out of
have got something from the character I’m playing - which is such a nice feeling. I think middle England is still not ready to see characters like Jay on their screens because it scares them, there are a lot of street based dramas and films that aren’t making it because people are scared to invest in it. I’ve been to a lot of auditions where casting directors think I am the character; they think i’m going to be some hoodlum!
“I think middle England is still not ready to see characters like Jay on their screens because it scares them.”
You mentioned knife crime – which is a pretty huge topic of debate at the moment. What do you think the Government could do to deter young people from knives and guns? I read somewhere that the Government spent £2million on an advertising campaign saying put guns down and they made it all trendy and dramatic but I think that is such a waste of money. Kids who are carrying guns know
it and I did. Not everyone made it as an actor but it also taught them other skills, like social skills. A lot of the more troubled kids who went there calmed down a bit – they learnt how to interact with people, they learnt focus. Are you worried about being typecast? Not really, even though the parts I play are quite street, I always try and change it up and think of different ways to bring the characters to life. I think it will be hard to find an actor who hasn’t been typecast, even someone like Hugh Grant plays the same parts. As long as I’m working, I’m happy but I also enjoy playing those parts. So many people come up to me and say they
What’s next for you? I’m actually writing a script at the moment which I’m very excited about. I’ve filmed a brilliant prime time drama for ITV1 called Gunrush which is very deep – hopefully that will be hitting our screens pretty soon. I’m also working on my album which I’m going to release this year. I’ve been working with different producers and beats – I want it to be right before I put it out there.

Fiona Luke, founder, TEBBS SC tells us about the developments she is making with her community venture to collect stationery for school children in Sierra Leone. The idea of the stationery drive is to encourage people to donate stationery that I will take over to Sierra Leone and personally distribute to each and every student in two schools. TEBBS SC will offer a helping hand to people who are less fortunate. The ordinary people who are trying to achieve the extraordinary by building their community, whether by schooling children in their homes or in a traditional school environment, but cannot survive due to the economic climate of the country in which they live. Our first project will be for two schools that I visited in Sierra Leone and in time we will seek to reach other African and Caribbean countries. Thanks to a very generous donor Tebbs Second Chances has diversified slightly with the items we will be taking to Sierra Leone. We will now also be taking literature and reading books to the schools for the 2009 Stationery Project. We believe that this will encourage and help broaden the minds of the children. Thank you to Mount Aureol Shipping and Ruach Ministries Youth Department for all of their effort and generous contributions. We appreciate everything you guys have done and we will forever be grateful. If you are thinking of donating to this worthy project, we would appreciate it if you could send your donations as soon as you can. This way, we can categorise and account for all the items received and still have enough time to identify which items are still needed. How can you get involved? We are looking for volunteers to help us to catalogue and pack the donated items ready for shipping.
