ANANÉSWORLD Ananésworld is your sophomore album; how and why is it different from Ananéselections? Ananésworld is an album that reflects who I am today as a woman. Confident, strong, sexy, nurturing, and in love. I was able to express myself through lyrics and different styles of music, not to mention co-producing some of the songs. I’ve found different voices that allow me to play and be free as a singer/artist, feeling self-reliant with myself. Anané selections was an introduction, Ananésworld is the complete story.
from Cape Verde, was the move a culture shock? The culture shock was not moving to New York. I was young when we moved to Rhode Island from Cape Verde, so I didn’t really understand at first but that quickly changed. We took a day trip with my dad’s company to New York City one summer, I must have been 13 or 14, I can remember sitting in Rockefeller Center and looking up at the buildings around me and saying to my mom, “I want to live here when I grow up”, she looked at me as if I were crazy.
Your style is so varied, with reggae, rock and jazz and it really shines through on Ananésworld. Does that come from your childhood or your worldly later years? The different styles come from a life filled with music. From as young as I can remember music was a normal part of growing up, meaning there was either music playing, singing or someone playing an instrument, my uncles on guitars, my mom singing, or my dad playing around with percussions. As I got older it became my way to escape from the stresses of being a teenager, and later it was my release, dancing was my way to let everything go and get lost in the music. I love all music, if it makes my foot tap, or hips sway, I’m down with it.
How does growing up in West Africa impact on your world view, particularly your view of music? I did most of my growing up in Rhode Island, but at home our culture and heritage remained very present and part of our day-to-day life, we only spoke Portuguese at home. I spent most of my time wanting to be “American”, listening to the radio, watching videos, although in the background Cape Verdean music could still be heard throughout my house until I got a pair of headphones one birthday. But I felt privileged for having this other beautiful culture of music that not too many others had.
New York must have been a world away
You’ve worked with some greats on this album. Tell me a bit about the collaborative process. Its incredible how I’ve been so blessed to work with so many talented artists/musicians, I feel so blessed. Working with Louie Vega has been like going to a University, it’s been amazing learning from him, not only music but the business side as well. Duane Harden is a dear friend of mine, so working with him was spent laughing and “carrying on”; he definitely brought
out the party/dance side of me to the album. Lem Springsteen is cool and seductive, and working with Lisa Fischer was a dream come true. She is someone I have looked up to for years and always tried to be. Funny story…. I remember saving up some money and going out to buy a cassette single of Lisa Fischer’s “Save Me”, I wrote it down word for word, memorized it and spent all my time emulating Lisa in the mirror. Crazy that nearly 15 years later, I co-wrote three songs with her and she helped arrange a lot of the background vocals on my album. So there you have it my mentor, my hero, my friend and now my colleague…Lisa Fischer. You say the album is a soundtrack to moments in your life. Can you tell me of one of these moments that may be directly represented in one of the tracks? Wow, good question because so many of the songs truly represent a moment of my life. I think “Bigger Than Life” is the song that maybe many young girls (as I was) can relate too. I remember wishing on that star, but not only wishing, visualizing myself making that move, packing my things and going to a bigger place to find a bigger life. Do you have any favourite tracks? Why is it your favourite? I have quite of few favourite songs on this album, but I would have to say “Rock The Cradle” I’m very proud of. Its my world awareness song, the lyrics are really deep and twisted in a way that you really have to listen to the words to understand what I’m talking about, its not just a mommy and child song, its deeper than that.

Erykah Badu New Amerykah Part Two: Return of the Ankh Release Date: 30 March 2010 In 2008, Badu released New Amerykah Part One: 4th World War but don’t expect more of the same as this album is the complete opposite of that electronica-based album and deals more with relationships and love. Erykah’s famous husky voice is paired with funk-soul grooves and her eccentric and seductive style is as powerful as ever. We would not expect anything less!
Cypress Hill Rise Up Release date: 19 April 2010 Under the new management of Snoop Dogg, these hiphop heavyweights are back with their eighth studio album. Guest appearances include club favourite Pitbull and Mike Shinoda from Linkin Park pops up to lend his skills to the autobiographical track; ‘Carry Me Away’. Although the dark beats and lyrically dedication to certain herbs remain at the forefront, Rise Up does show elements of the classic gangster rappers more serious side. The album is a solid and enjoyable that after the long wait should please old day fans as well as new devotees.
Usher Raymond V Raymond Release Date: 26 April 2010 The king of seductively catchy RnB, returns with his latest and highly anticipated sixth album. After a tough divorce and the luke-warm response to his last album, Usher’s return is packed with single worthy track after single worthy track! Whether it is a slow jam like ‘Making Love (Into The Night)’, a club banger like the Will.I.Am produced ‘OMG’, a cool RnB and house music mash up, or the emotionally tense ‘Papers,’ that deals with his own divorce papers, Usher brings it!

Chandralekha and Gundecha Brothers: Sharira
Alchemy brings to London the work of legendary Indian choreographer Chandralekha. An iconoclastic figure, often referred to as the founder of modern Indian Dance, she proclaimed the need for reintegrating the diverse Indian physical traditions and exploring new and contemporary directions for dance in India. In this performance, dancers Shaji John and Tishani Doshi perform her work ‘Sharira’, a duet for a male and a female dancer, exploring the complex idea of femininity. Using the Indian classical dance style Bharatanatyam, as well as yoga and the martial art Kalarippayyat, it is a modern celebration of the living body in which sensuality and spirituality co-exist. The music and song for this piece is interpreted live by the Gundecha brothers, acclaimed young exponents of Dhrupad music, one of the most ancient styles of Indian classical music. Nitro and the Albany present a new play by Mojisola Adebayo. They say your life flashes in front of you just before you die. But supposing it’s not just your life? Soldier Boy’s in a deep situation. Minding his own on the streets of Deptford, he collides with the wrong crowd and meets trouble. Just one more hoody with a knife in his belly, crying for his mother on a riverbank. Instead his cries are heard by the long-dead Desert Man, from Mali 300 years ago... This is the start of an amazing trip, from the chaos and crime of London streets to the stench of slave ships on the open seas and the chains of cotton plantations in America’s Deep South. Man and boy share the absurdity and brutality of their history in order to shape thier future. Shot with killer voices, singing across the ages from Mali to hip hop, slave songs to rap, Desert Boy is funny and thought-provoking. Music and direction by Felix Cross. T A K
AT
Extremely talented, Kat B has worked in the entertainment industry as a choreographer, dancer and actor; stands out as a crowd favourite in the UK comedy circuit and has built up an enormous following. Renowned for being a down to earth fun guy, Kat B has managed to keep it real by doing what he does best for his fans. Life In Colour’s Ksndra caught up with Kat before he hits the road on the Real Deal Comedy Jam Tour and, especially for Life In Colour readers, he gives us an insight into his world... Q: What’s going on in Kat’s world at the moment? I’m getting geared up and ready for panto at the Hackney empire — oh yes I am people panto! I’ll be hosting shows, club nights, filming, writing, breeding and raising exotic pets, as well as cooking and working... basically I’m having a great time living life and taking each day at a time it’s a nice feeling to just be you, live you, and do you flying my radio-controlled helicopters and planes, and then back on stage.
Q: You have done TV with a role on MTV Base, radio with Choice FM now you are touring with the Real Deal Comedy Jam; what makes each of these special and which is your favourite? Each one is special because they all have shown off my many sides and has shown other people that I can’t fit into just one box. With MTV, apart from the celebs, I have met some
amazing artists and I’ve been able to make everyone across the country see that it is possible to make your dreams happen if you just reach out past your own post code. With the radio, it was a playground for me with a voice, so myself or Mr Richard Blackwood would say something on the radio; we could voice what people were thinking and have an amazing time doing so on air. And wow, Real Deal are my close people in the small time that we have been together. As a collective they have shown love, commitment and understanding to the needs of the Artists as well as to each other. And with Real Deal it’s all love; many peeps hire comics but with Real Deal they lease you. None of this ahh can we pay you on the next show or we will give you another gig cause this didn’t make no money — I’m paid all before I leave me house! Q: How does it feel to be working with Richard Blackwood on the tour? Could this be the return of the dynamic duo? (Kat laughs), you guys are funny we are always at hugs together we see each other still and hang. We ain’t eaten together for a while, but we are in touch. The Dynamic Duo are back for this tour and rumour has it for Richard’s Roast and His National Stand Up Tour with me doing warm up before Blacka does a full 90min. Q: You will be touring the UK; which city would you say gives you more love? I’m not sure as the all give great love. Brum are loyal and the other towns give us a lot of love and feedback. I’m just hoping the new town that we’re gonna be on, Cardiff, I’m hoping you have the Real Deal Funny bone in ya. Q: What is the most bizarre thing a fan has done to get your
attention? (Kat laughs) I plead the 5th! Then again was it bizarre... Hmmmm long rain coat and a power tool in hand outside the radio show, showing what I’m missing, how far the power tool could vanish. Hey, it was like Paul Daniels! You’re thinking did I do anything...? Well maybe but not a lot. Q. What is your advice for people starting out in the industry? Stay focused on the one goal and be ready to cry, feel alone a lot of the time, be ready not to make money for a long time... when you start cause, it’s a hard ladder, study your craft, watch, go out and pay if you have to. Offer your services to people — except me. And keep the friends you have now because they are your life of sanity when you just want to hang out. No hanger ons! There is no limit to what you can do, only the limit of your imagination. Q: What new projects are you working on for your fans None at the moment. I’m going into do some music but that’s just for me, and if the fans like it then that’s cool. I just want to do Kat tings now. I’ve given so much of me and my energy on stage that I’ve hooked up with great artist and musicians and as I’ve helped them they are giving me their free time. Did someone say Jon B, Nate James, Killar Kella, FDM, Nathan, Scottie B to name a few...? Shhhhh. Thanks for the interview peeps and remember when you have a dream don’t let anyone say ahh you can’t do it Challenge them and make them understand its your dream and how dare they try putting your dream down. It’s not theirs to break. And if they say ‘but why?’ say because I can. I did it and so can you. Always remember: ‘Because I Can’.

For years litigations have built up against Dole, the food multinational probably best known for providing millions of us with bananas every day. Dole workers in Nicaragua have been poisoned by a pesticide which causes liver and kidney damage and sterility (and which has been illegal in the US for almost 40 years). This documentary, focusing on one case brought by unorthodox attorney Juan Dominguez, was pulled from competition in the LA Film Festival after Dole protested; it reveals a great deal about the global politics of food production and leaves us with more questions than answers. SCREEN DVD REVIEW
1 Day
Synopsis: Flash gets a phone call from Angel announcing that he is being released from prison and wants the £500K he left with Flash for safekeeping. Short of the full amount and pushed for time, Flash is forced to strike a deal with Evil who more than lives up to his name. 1 DAY follows Flash’s race against the clock as he is pursued by a rival gang, the police, his three irate baby mothers and his gran — all to slamming lyrics, beats and rhymes. You see, 1Day is a musical like no other, set in Birmingham’s urban streets to a backdrop of urban sounds. When Director Penny Woolcock was pushed to the ground and kicked repeatedly in the head by a young Afro-Caribbean mugger on the late-night streets of North London, she had a three-part epiphany. “Who are you?” thought the 59 year old film-maker as she stared into the eyes of her young assailant. “What happened to you that you think it’s all right to do this?” she wondered, as she listened to the “horrible crunching sounds” from within her weakening skull. And finally, as the mugger fled and she vomited and slipped in and out of consciousness, she decided: “This would make a great film!” This Hip-hop musical featuring original grime tracks, gospel and reggae surpasses all expectations and makes for good viewing.

No Place to Hide: How I Put the Black in the Union Jack Errol Christie, Tony McMahon Format: Hardback Published: 25/03/2010 Publisher: Aurum Press Ltd ISBN: 9781845135133 RRP: £12.99 Although Errol Christie was an English and European champion with a reputation for delivering devastating early knockouts to his opponents and a cocky, lovable charm, Errol Christie, had to do as much fighting outside the ring as in. This book documents his struggles to live in peace on the streets of seventies Coventry as a poor black man, amidst attacks from the skinheads and Nation Front members who were so prominent in Britain at the time. Errol talks about how even once he had hit the big time he found it difficult to be a black boxer who was not prepared to follow the white rules, something that upset a lot of people. It is also an interesting look at a great sportsman, who after major glory found himself alone with only his own shattered confidence and how he put himself back together.
www.singleholic.com We approach Selfridges’ main entrance doors, and the conversation comes to its natural end. Bloody hell. Maybe this is it. Maybe he’s married after all. His hand is still in his pocket. Maybe he only needed my help to find his sister a present, and now he’ll abandon me alone and single, to stay like this forever, to spend the rest of my life fighting off Bridget Jones’ Alsatians. In front of the doors he pauses, and turns to face me. ‘You know, I don’t even know your name.’ ‘Oh yeah, well it’s Sarah.’ I hold out my LEFT hand. ‘It’s been a pleasure.’ Out comes his. He takes my hand and holds it gently. As he slowly withdraws, I glance down quickly to take note of the ring finger. TOUCH DOWN. No ring. Now let’s just hope he doesn’t have a girlfriend. He looks to the doors. Remember Jacquie’s wise words: You’re a GODDESS. Let’s wait and see if he likes you enough. Oh please God, please God, please let him like me enough. I’ll do anything…anything you want. Do you want me to give more money to charity? I’ll go and find a beggar outside right now if you want. I’ll give him all the money I have…Just please, please let this man like me enough to ask for my phone number. He takes my hand and gently pulls me in, placing a soft kiss on my cheek. ‘I’m Chibu. And the pleasure has indeed been mine. What a great afternoon. First this gorgeous woman literally throws herself at me, and then she kindly spends the afternoon helping me buy my sister’s present.’ He pauses and points his index finger. ‘The number one question of the day, however, is whether or not she’s going to give me her phone number.’ WAHEY. Prime City…He asked me. He likes me enough! Thank you, God. Thank you. Thank you for saving me from a life of solitude and misery. I fumble around in my bag for a pen. I pull it out triumphantly. Chibu smiles, pointing to the mobile phone in his hand. Jesus. Here I am trying to look cool, but with one false move, I manage to demonstrate that a man asking for my phone number is a rare occurrence. The last time I exchanged phone numbers with someone in this way, mobile phones didn’t even exist. Chibu makes no mention of my faux pas and punches in the digits as I recite them. ‘Right,’ he announces smiling, ‘thanks for a lovely afternoon.’ He winks. ‘I’ll give you a call soon.’ ‘I look forward to it,’ I exclaim, taking one final look at his beautiful black head and I walk back into the store to do some more shopping.

Clear You Mind If you’re going to start, you may as well start from the top. It’s time to assess what’s going on in your in your head. We all have an inner dialogue, sometimes it’s positive “no one makes macaroni cheese like me!”, “I look great in these jeans”, “life’s looking so bright right now, the only way is up!”, sometimes it’s not so positive “I hate my thighs, I’m so fat…”, “I’ll never get it all done, I’m such a loser…”, “things always go wrong, why me?” Now is the time to assess some of those broken records and realise you don’t actually like what’s playing. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not about to encourage you to lie to yourself, simply changing negative to positive isn’t going to cut it. Instead I’m asking you to
take note of what’s being said. Think back; when did these comments start? Are they really your hang-ups or are you harbouring someone else’s issues? Who told you that you were fat, or that you couldn’t get it done? Well maybe their wrong in which case change the record. Job done! Then again, maybe they’re right… and if they are, so what? It’s up to you whether or not you have an issue with the truth. Change the negative statements to a more forgiving honest one. Change “I hate my thighs, I’m so fat…” to “there’s nothing wrong with my ample curves, and if I feel I need to lose weight, Iwill get on and do it”. Change “I’ll never get it all done, I’m such a loser…” to “I’ll give this 100% and that way, if it doesn’t get done, I know I tried my best”. Change “things always go wrong, why me?” to “things go wrong, but that’s life, I’ll dust myself off and try again”. Whatever you do, change that record.
Cleanse Your Body Now that your head’s straight, it’s time to deal with the physical. No, no, no, I’m not going to tell you to go on a diet (haven’t you been reading?). Dealing with the physical is about greasing the engine, not just buffing the paintwork. What you take into your system has a huge effect on all aspects of your life. Eating the right foods can improve alertness and stamina, making getting through a busy day that much easier, especially if you’re prone to tiredness and low energy bouts. Why not check in with a nutritionist with a list of gripes; you’ll be surprised how many of them can be helped with the right snack… Now would be a good time to give up that smoking and cut down on the drinking. I know how you smokers and drinkers feel about people preaching on about your sins, so I’ll leave it there…
Drink 2 litres of water will ensure you skin is super smooth by helping you to rid your body of toxins. You can get your two letters from all sorts of places, like green tea, vegetables like cucumbers, and fruit like watermelon, so your 2 litres doesn’t have to be a tasteless chore. A bit of exercise wouldn’t go a miss… but before you hand over your savings to a gym you’ll never see the inside of again, why not invest in a pedometer? Find out how much you’re actually getting already, you’ll be shocked at how much exercise an average day holds, especially if you have children! Pair that with one or two changes - like walking from your corner shop carrying your milk, bread and eggs instead of driving the 200 yards, or playing football in the park with the kids instead of watching TV while Jimmy’s on his PSP and you’ll be good to go. Now for the paintwork I mentioned earlier; if you’re putting in the effort with diet and exercise, you’ll see it on the outside. Well, sort of. You see, you may still have a layer of the old you sitting on top of the new you. This one’s easily solved: incorporate a body buff into your grooming plan. Exfoliation will remove dead skin cells and other debris, revealing the shiny new you underneath. A good body scrub at bath time should do it. Have A Plan Your head is in the right place, you’re full of energy and you look great! Now to put you mark 2 to use. I can tell you’re rearing to go so… take a seat. It’s time to put
pen to paper. In the great place you’re in now, anything’s possible. You’re on a high and you know if you put your mind to it you can do it. This is the perfect time to set some goals. Goals should be aspirational and they should truly be the things you dream of. When you’re down, your dreams seem so far away, committing them to paper is the last thing you want to do. Instead you end up writing down what other people want from you, or goals that you think are expected from you. Right now you’re in a great place and this moment is about you. So do you. There should be no shame in a single thing that goes on that page. And I really mean page. Writing digitally gives you the opportunity to go back and edit yourself, when you write on a sheet of paper that is not an option. Don’t worry about spelling mistakes or constraints like the number of goals. Just get writing. No apologies. You may end up with a few lines or a few pages, either way, it will be an honest list and it will be yours. While you’re in the zone, go over the list and pull out the ones that can be achieved in the short term and write them on a separate piece of paper. There may only be a handful of these, or it could be the majority of the list. Against each of these goals, write down the next step you have to take to make that goal a reality. If it’s giving up smoking, maybe the next step is to throw out all the cigarettes in your home. If it’s to change fields, maybe your next step is to sign up for an evening course, or, if you have the skills, an employment agency. Every one of your goals will have a next step. Commit them all to paper. No you have a plan. Revisit your list of steps every week. It’s a very positive feeling
when you can cross things that you have done off the list. Maybe you can use a special coloured pen. When you cross off a step, write the next one in. keep that up and you’ll see yourself achieving your dreams, it’ll be there in black and white. (or pink, or red, or whatever colour you used!) Revisit your list of goals every month. Take note of the things you care getting closer to completing. When a goal is achieved mark that moment. Look at yourself in the mirror and see who you are, see what an achiever looks like. Give each achievement a slogan and commit it to your inner dialogue, soon they will be no room for negative thoughts! Give your first goal this slogan: “I am an achiever, I can do anything!” Say Thank You Remember, while all these things will help to make the best you, you won’t get there alone. Everyone has a support team; humans are sociable creatures! And most of us have a spiritual guiding force too. Don’t forget to say thank you to your family and friends. There are ways to do it, without looking completely insane. Smile often. Share in your successes with them. Always remain grateful for their presence: we’re all here on borrow time. Enjoy them and don’t hold grudges. When you’re alone meditate in a prayerful way so that you’re one with your spiritual guide. This will remind you that you are never really alone. And every night, after you’ve thanked your family, friends and spiritual guide, thank you too. Just for being you.

Kizomba is an African rhythm, meaning ‘party’ in the Kimbundo language. It was developed in Angola mostly since the late 70s and refers to both the music and the dance. Kizomba is a result of an evolution: fusing traditional Angolan music such as semba with French Caribbean zouk. The younger generation adapted the semba steps to this new sound and Kizomba was born. It is very popular in many Lusophone countries, widely danced in Portugal and now taking Europe and the UK by storm. The dance requires you to connect with your partner, to lead and be led, and has similarities with tango, while being more laid back. Dear Counsellor Mike
I thought I was in the perfect relationship. My man does
I have just come out of a long term relationship which didn’t end very well. I feel as though I didn’t really know my ex partner throughout our relationship and that something was missing. We have a son which was the reason we stayed together. I love my son very much and I couldn’t carry on with the pretence, which why it ended. The problem now is that we are having difficulty with visitation arrangements concerning our son. Sometimes I think it would be easier to be out of my son’s life for a while until it settles down but I don’t know if this is a good or bad idea? Please advise? Derek
everything for me, he cooks, cleans, helps me financially, he is funny and kind and I worship him. I couldn’t think of a better relationship until the day he confessed that he has been cheating on me, not once but a few times. Devastation, shock and hurt were my instant reactions and I was not quite sure why he felt the need to cheat on me in the first place. He said that he loves me, but he is sexually deprived and doesn’t understand himself why he does it. I thought our sex life was great, but he obviously doesn’t feel the same and said it was not my fault. Of course I feel it’s my fault and I feel hopeless. I’m not sure if I want to have sex with him now. Where do I go on from here?
Elaine
I understand how hurt and angry you must feel. You were led to believe by him that you were in the perfect relationship. You should not blame yourself. It is an issue that he has to deal with by himself and this could be something relating to his past history. It might be worth him seeking counselling to find out what makes him look for sex elsewhere. For you however, you need to come to terms with the issue and work out how you will move forward, with or without him. You might also want to consider counselling either by yourself of as a couple. Once you are both willing to take those steps change will take place. Counsellor Mike
Dear Counsellor Mike My wife and I have been trying for a baby for five years through IVF and it was wonderful news when my wife fell pregnant

after all that time. However, last week she miscarried and like
I have been having difficulty lately with my eldest son who is 14 yrs old. I am a single parent and his father isn’t around and really wouldn’t be much of a role model if he was. He doesn’t listen to me as much and seems very angry in life. He says it’s nothing to do with me but I wonder if he resents me. What do suggest I do? Elizabeth
me, is devastated. She is always in tears and is hysterical and of course I do my best to console her, but I am not sure if I am doing enough. I feel she is suffering more as a woman and I don’t know what to say to make it better. Please help? Marvin Marvin Marvin I am very sorry to hear of your loss. This is a very delicate situation as emotions are all over the place. I know your wife is emotional but you are also suffering too and you need to deal with your feelings to help her. Having support from family and friends will help, but dealing with the problem together and facing the future is what you both need to workout. Counselling may be a route to take to get your feelings out in the open with a qualified counsellor to mediate. All the best Counsellor Mike
Elizabeth Your son is 14, a teenager going through puberty, which could be one reason for his anger. There are a lot of emotions going on around him at this time. If you are concerned regarding his father, talk to him and find out what he is thinking. Tell him you are there for him and suggest a day out shopping or go to a restaurant and make it fun. You could also ask him what he wants to do and then you can gently bring issues into the conversation that you are concerned about. The more relaxed he is the more he will open up. All the best Counsellor Mike

Derek Adults need to be responsible for their child’s well-being and focus on having a healthy relationship with their parents, whether the separation is good or bad, both have to be civil towards one another especially with father-son relationships. A mother can do a lot to nurture her son, but can not show her son how to be the best man they can be. This is why they need to always establish a strong positive relationship with their father. Both adults need to make things amicable as possible for the child. Make arrangement for visits every weekend or second weekend. If communication has broken down between father and mother, ask a mutual friend or relative you can trust to act as ago between so their relationship isn’t affected. This could affect them in later years and how they deal with relationships when they grow into adults and have children themselves. A father and son relationship is very important for their future well being. Counsellor Mike

‘Smile’ is a collaborative group show displaying works in various media including acrylic, oil, photography, new media and installation. This exhibition aims to act as a cultural antidote to the recent global depression, natural disasters and a general mood of despondency. Smiling is a universal act, yet there have not been many reasons to do so lately. In the greater scheme of things one often forgets the little moments in life that make us smile and thus happy. This forthcoming exhibition also aims to challenge people to step out of their busy consumer driven life styles to take a split second to ‘stop and stare’ and to hold the moment and smile: here the true sense of smiling is in store not the ‘fake’ one so often dished out without meaning. One of Britain’s First Black Female Recorders
B: 1954 - Georgetown, Guyana Baroness Valerie Amos was created a life peer in 1997. She is a British Labour Party politician and life peer, formerly serving as Leader of the House of Lords and Lord President of the Council. When she was appointed Secretary of State for International Development on 12 May 2003, following the resignation of Clare Short, she became the first black woman to sit in the Cabinet of the United Kingdom. A distinctive element of Baroness Amos’ political career is that she has never actually been elected to any public office as every office held has been

an unelected appointment. Following positions in Equal Opportunities, Training and Management Services in local government in the London boroughs of Lambeth, Camden and Hackney, she became Chief Executive of the Equal Opportunities Commission 1989–94. After resigning from the cabinet, Baroness Amos took up a directorship with Travant Capital, a Nigerian private equity fund launched in 2007 and is involved with the 2012 Olympic Committee.

Bernard Grant was one of many West Indians who took up the British government’s invitation to the colonies to move to the UK for blue-collar employment in 1963. He was for a period a member of the Socialist Labour League. He quickly became a trade union official, and moved into politics, becoming a Labour councilor in the London Borough of Haringey in 1978. As council leader during the Broadwater Farm riot of 1985, in which a policeman, PC Blakelock, was killed, he was thrown into the public eye, when he was widely quoted as saying “The police got
a bloody good hiding”. Grant claimed had been taken out of context, but offered an apology to the family of PC Blakelock. The controversy did not prevent him from becoming MP for Tottenham in the 1987 election, one of only three black MPs at the time. As an MP he backed demands for black sections in the Labour and was recognised as a staunch voice against Police racism. In September 2007 in Tottenham, London, Haringey Council opened the Bernie Grant Arts Centre in his name.
