A Word From The Editor 27 You know the sun is out when you see drivers with their tops down. Hair blowing in the wind; elbow on door. It kind of warms the heart. As much as I like to enjoy the sun, I love to see others enjoying it that much more. Maybe that’s why I get such a kick out of Life In Colour. These pages are your window to the best London has to offer culturally, and in the form of entertainment.

When those car tops are down, the most noticeable thing is the music you hear. From Dance to R&B to Portuguese Pop; I’ve heard it all. Sometimes I feel like tossing a mag on their back seats when they’re at the traffic lights — I know they’ll get a kick out of our live music listings! Speaking of which, check out our feature on London songstress Terri Walker, who will be performing at the Jazz Café next month; there’s even a chance for you to win tickets to the show. I thank London for being the cultural hub it is. Just like the music from the cars in summer, there’s something in the air in this city. Our new writer Minna Salami captures a part of it perfectly in her new fixture Afropolitan. Don’t worry, you’ll find a definition in the feature, so I’ll say no more.

On 25 June 2009, we heard news that rocked the entertainment world. The nations cried when they heard that Michael Jackson was gone. Since his untimely passing, Michael Jackson has had somewhat of a resurgence. One year on, we look at the impact his music continues to have on us. Throughout his life, Michael seemed like an unstoppable vessel for great music and entertainment. When possibility of more from Michael came to an abrupt end, people hit the high street and digital stores for all they could get. Around 2.3 million albums were sold in the 3 weeks after his death while the world mourned, but sales didn’t stop there, with around 25 million records being sold in the 5 months after his death. In fact, MJ sales dominated the iTunes sales chart. On the Friday following his death, 41 songs on the iTunes Top 100 singles chart featured contributions from Michael Jackson, either in lead or backing vocals. Furthermore, 24 of the Top 100 albums were either from Michael’s solo career or from his Jackson 5 days. With sales like these, it’s fair to say that Michael gained a horde of new fans amidst the mania of his passing. Hardcore fans would have already had much of his work already. We all have that kid in the family who wasn’t even born for Bad let alone Billy Jean, but who now knows every word to their top 10 MJ tracks. For once, they heard all the good things Michael had to offer, and not just the crazy negative press. As bittersweet as it may be, Michael’s death gave us the opportunity to celebrate his life and remember the massive contribution he made to music and entertainment. Though it’s yet to be seen, Mohammad Al Fayed said he would even erect a statue of the icon outside of his Knightsbridge store Harrods.

This wasn’t the only tribute of this sort to Michael: a giant plastic sculpture of the late singer was erected in a village outside Zurich, Switzerland. The 12-metre high statue was made of four tonnes of grey and gold plastic. The man behind it, Andreas Grassman, described himself as a huge Jackson fan and had spent five days restoring it. Harper’s Bazaar paid tribute in their September edition by highlighting the impact Michael had as a style icon. Brit model Agyness Deyn channelled her inner Michael for an amazing Terry Richardson photo shoot where she re-enacted moments from the star’s life in replicas of his iconic outfits. Her looks ranged from the red Thriller outfit to his black ankle-revealing trousers and studded glove. Work on a museum dedicated to the star’s legacy could also commence construction very soon in his hometown. It’s hoped the project, expected to cost $300m (£204m), will draw 750,000 visitors a year to Gary, Indiana — much like Elvis’ Graceland. The plans come with endorsement from his father, Joe Jackson. Michael actually had a hand in the plans before his death and last visited the town to talk about the plans in 2003. Clearly, the contribution Michael made to music and entertainment has resonated throughout the world and continues to do so. Despite the negative press that dogged his life, he is being remembered for his talents and the great music he made. When all is said and done, he is a legend. Michael Jackson will be inducted into the Hall of Fame at the Apollo Theatre in New York. The Jackson 5 first performed there in 1967, and it’s where thousands of fans remembered the icon at his memorial event. One thing’s for sure, Michael will undoubtedly live on through the amazing musical works he left behind. Samera Owusu Tutu

Terri Sets the Record Straigh UK soul singer Terri Walker has kept a low profile in the of late. But she talks to Life in Colour editor, Samera Owusu Tutu, and let’s us know what she’s been up to whilst out of the limelight, who she’s worked with, and what is next for in 2010. Hi Terri How’s things? I’m great been getting my creative juices flowing! You’re a bit of a music veteran right now, is it true you’ve worked with the likes of Paul Weller, Shanks & Bigfoot, Brand New Heavies and the Young Disciples? (Laughs) Well you could say that. The only thing is I’ve never worked with Paul Weller and I just had one session with the Brand New Heavies. It makes me laugh every time I get asked that. But yes I’ve been in this game for a minute and have been very blessed to work with some people I respect and admire. While you’ve clearly made your mark on the industry, commercially you’ve had less of an impact despite major collaborations on your albums (Mos Def featured on your first album correct?) and much critical acclaim. Why do you think this was? Do you think the British public was harder to crack? I don’t think the British crowd is that hard to crack. All you have to do is let them get to really know you. I never really got that

chance as I was under the critical acclaimed category and was kinda kept in that bracket. For example, I never got to perform on Top of the Pops, CD UK etc. Those were the outlets that got to the masses. I kinda understood that at the time, as I wasn’t really doing what everyone else was doing. I do think that now there are so many outlets to get your music heard that it doesn’t really matter if you crack any country. People will find what they want to hear somehow. I know I do! Would you say things are getting easier for British R&B/ Soul singers like yourself or harder? I think it’s getting easier for me personally. The reason I say that is because my goal isn’t to be crazy successful but to make the music that represents me. I don’t have the restrictions of somebody telling me I don’t look the part or have to make a certain sound to be in trend. The Internet is the best thing to have happened for us. Now you just need to promote the pants out of it and do as many live shows you can to get your fan base up. I’ve been away for a minute and need to get back in touch with people. To some it seemed like you were having a bit of a hiatus after your third album, I AM, in 2006, but actually you’ve been quite busy right? I did kind of take a Hiatus I just needed to find the love for it again and not get caught up in the politics. I found myself second-

guessing all the time and that’s when I knew I had to step back and just focus on me. Of course I still sang, because that’s my passion. In the time I was gone I have been lending my vocals to various projects. “The Champagne Flutes” produced by Salaam Remi [Amy Winehouse; Ms Dynamite] should be coming out in the next few months. I’ve also been helping Salaam out vocally on the Sex and the City soundtrack and managed to get one song on the first Soundtrack Vol 2. ‘The 24 hour Karate School” mixtape produced by Skibeatz also has my helpings on it. It features Mos Def, Jay Electronica and Cool Kids, among others. So yeah, I’ve been busy! It looks like exciting times ahead for you; I hear you’re signed with Damon Dash’s newly reformed Roc-A-Fella label…? Nobody is signed to Roc-A-Fella; we are just being distributed through there. It could be Blu Roc too. Dame is amazing like that as he doesn’t want to tell any artist what to do, he just wants it to get out and be heard. I got involved with the whole Creative Control TV situation through a friend of mine, Naheem Kassan, who Tour manages Mos Def and is his right hand man. Will your music/sound be taking a new direction? Yes I would say it’s going to be more hard-hitting. I’m going for a Hip Hop theme on this one. I

ht

have the privilege of working with Salaam and Skibeatz [Jay Z, Camp Lo]. I consider them veterans in the game if you listen to what they have produced. This Album is all about the feel for me.

currently in New York with Skibeatz working on an album at the moment right? Who are you working with on that? I did a smoker with the Apple Juice Kid [Wale, Camp Lo] the other day. I am very excited about how it’s turning out so far and I’m three quarters of the way through. Where do you want to go from here? I really just want to touch the people that want to be touched by

You’re

me. Nothing more or less. I know what I’m like when it comes to music. Just because millions of people like something doesn’t mean I have to and I feel the same about my music. So I’m aiming for success in people that have their own mind and like to embrace all. You’ll be performing at the Jazz Cafe this summer; will you be showcasing any new material? Oh yes I definitely will! I can’t wait to perform some of the new stuff I’ve been doing. When is the album due to drop? Any names in the pipeline? There isn’t a deadline for the album yet and yes there are some features but I’m not spilling anything yet (laughs)! However if you want to keep in the loop follow me on Twitter @therealmzwalker or join me on Facebook where I have a Terri Walker fan base set up and not to forget my blog www. theterriwalker.com where you can also be updated with my shenanigans.

Review

The contemporary character and the ancestor challenged each other, pointing out failings and hypocrisies as they travelled back and forth between the centuries looking at how their lives turned out. Desert Man appeared to the stabbed Soldier Boy on Deptford Beach in response to his cry for help. Like two Ghosts of Christmas Past, they time travelled, reliving significant moments, learning about each other until they finally returned to the bank of the Thames. The audience were taken with Soldier Boy to Desert Man’s home in Mali. We followed them both as Man and Boy were captured and enslaved, transported to labour in one of the southern states, ran away to fight for the British in the

Civil War who promised the Africans liberty of they were victorious. Upon defeat they were shipped to England where they worked in servitude, a petty misunderstanding saw them in court facing charges of theft, then sentences to be shipped to Botany Bay in Australia. Do not think that this is just a historical piece; it is very relevant to the modern day because it tackled issues such as knife crime, racism, absent fathers. It did not seem preachy, both characters chastised each other as they both had flaws. And there were comedic moments; at one point Boy instructed Man how to approach and seduce a woman with hilarious results. Felix Cross, the director, took the idea of exploring the story of the African convict settlers of Australia to the playwright, Mojisola Adebajo. Femi Ogunbanjo shone as Desert Man. Emanuel Idowu was an excellent Soldier Boy, and the ensemble cast were brilliant, playing all the other parts, with spot-on

accents and mannerisms. The play is similar in its premise to Crossings by Julie McNamara and Nina and Shaz by Laura McCluskey in which the young protagonists are taught lessons by ghosts of a ship and the musician, Nina Simone, respectively. They were great plays however Desert Boy seemed more coherent, because there was a stronger link between the lives and experiences of the youth and the ancestor. The production was also an unconventional musical with a cappella singing from the whole cast. They are two souls lost in limbo, and by the end of their journey they have helped each other to understand the world and their places in it a little bit more. Try to catch it on tour. Desert Boy played at the Albany Deptford between 29 April and 15 May.

This play was excellent. As a dramatic production, it entertained. As a historical piece, it educated. As a story, it informed. Gritty modern day reality blended effortlessly with historical reality.

Women, Power & Politics: Then Part of the Women, Power and Politics Season

Now and Then is a two part series of plays exploring women and power as part of the Women, Power & Politics Season at the Tricycle. The two parts can be seen separately, and not necessarily in chronological order if you do intend to see both. Then starts on 7 June, while Part Two - Now begins on 8 June. Expect new plays by Rebecca Lenkiewicz, Marie Jones, Moira Buffini and Lucy Kirkwood with Verbatim Accounts edited by Gillian Slovo.

THE MILLINER AND THE WEAVER

by Marie Jones Henrietta, from Belfast and Elspeth, from Dublin are unlikely comrades. The Suffragette movement binds them together, but as the question of Home Rule divides Ireland, will national politics tear them apart?

THE LIONESS

by Rebecca Lenkiewicz Elizabeth I described herself as Queen, King and Prince, thriving in a male world and saving the country from debt and wars. Self-proclaimed wife and mother to England, her virgin status was part of her myth, as she consistently refused marriage citing herself as already taken. Here we see

Elizabeth as both a woman and a leader and follow her encounters with two men, John Knox, the ultimate misogynist and Essex, her favourite.

HANDBAGGED

by Moira Buffini For over a decade Margaret Thatcher met the Queen for a weekly audience. With all her previous Prime Ministers the Queen enjoyed a fairly informal relationship, but with Mrs Thatcher, things were different. Handbagged speculates on the relationship between these two very powerful and private women.

BLOODY WIMMIN

by Lucy Kirkwood The protests at Greenham Common were a political landmark of the eighties. But how much did Greenham impact the fight for nuclear disarmament, the progress of the women’s movement and the culture of protest itself? What is the legacy of Greenham Common?…‘It’s very easy to laugh at passion’.

VERBATIM ACCOUNTS

by Gillian Slovo From leading politicians, edited from interviews she has recently conducted. Cost: £8.50 - £15 Time: Various Location: The Tricycle Theatre, 269 Kilburn High Road, NW6 7JR Info: 020 7328 1000

08 Jun – 17 Jul Women, Power &

by Bola Agbaje Election time. The Students’ Association needs a new President, and Akousa’s achingly cool flatmates are certain she is perfect for the position. How can they persuade her, and how much is she willing to compromise?

THE PANEL

by Zinnie Harris The last candidate has just left the room and the door is shut. The clock is ticking, there’s a train to catch, and the panel must decide who to appoint. But what is really motivating them, and whose agenda will prevail?

PINK

by Sam Holcroft Two careers hang in the balance. Self-made millionaire Kim Keen is one of the most successful businesswomen in the country. As she prepares to launch her latest range on national television an unexpected visitor arrives in her dressing room with a different set of priorities to promote.

YOU, ME AND Wii

by Sue Townsend In a council house in a small Leicestershire town, Vincent’s skiing on the Wii, Sheila’s feeding her granddaughter McKenzie, and Kerry’s getting on with the ironing. None of them are planning on voting in the election, but when Selina Snow rings the doorbell to canvas, perhaps she can change their minds, or they can change hers.

Jun Exclusive Preview: Bhutto

As the first woman to lead an Islamic nation, former Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto’s life story unfolds like a tale of Shakespearean dimensions. Educated at Harvard and Oxford, Bhutto evolved from pampered princess to polarising politician battling tradition and terrorism in the most dangerous country on Earth. Her father, the first democratically elected president of Pakistan, chose Benazir over his eldest son to carry his political mantle. Accused of rampant corruption, imprisoned, then exiled abroad, Bhutto was called back in 2007 as her country’s only hope for democracy. When she was struck down by an assassin, her untimely death sent shockwaves across the world, transforming Bhutto from political messiah to a martyr in the eyes of the common people. With exclusive interviews from the Bhutto family and never-before-seen footage, filmmakers Duane Baughman and Johnny O’Hara have crafted a sweeping epic of a transcendent, yet polarising, figure whose legacy will be debated for years to come. There will be a Q&A with director Duane Baughman and producers Glenn Aveni and Mark Seigel who was also Benazir Bhutto’s US political adviser. Jun Sisters in Law

This is a fascinating and often hilarious look at the work of a small courthouse in Cameroon where two women, determined to change a village, are making progress that could change the world. The doggedly determined state prosecutor Vera Ngassa and Court President, Beatrice Ntuba, are working to help women in their Muslim village find the courage to fight often-difficult cases of abuse, despite pressures from family and their community to remain silent. With fierce compassion, they dispense wisdom, wisecracks and justice in fair measure—handing down stiff sentences to those convicted. Inspiring and uplifting, Sisters In Law presents a strong and positive view of African women—and captures the emerging spirit of courage, hope and the possibility of change. In 1968, Shirley Chisholm became the first black woman elected to Congress. By 1972, she was the first black woman to run for president. 1972 was an extraordinary year. Richard Nixon was president, running for his second, ill-fated term. The voting age had just changed from 21 to 18, and millions of new voters were expected at the polls. The Vietnam War was in full swing, as were anti-war protests, a burgeoning women’s movement, and the rise of the Black Panther Party. Into the center of this maelstrom — shocking the conventional political wisdom — stepped Shirley Chisholm, a determined, rather prim and unapologetically liberal black woman with a powerful message: exercise the full measure of your citizenship and vote. “I ran for the presidency, despite hopeless odds, to demonstrate sheer will and refusal to accept the status quo.” Shirley Chisholm There will be a discussion after the film on Women, Race & Politics. Afropolitan By Minna Salami

A combination of the words African and cosmopolitan 1. A multidimensional African influenced by the Diaspora 2. Someone who identifies with Africa, but also other regions and cultures of the world 3. A person of African descent who is passionate about changing perceptions of Africa Afri-Kokoa - Launch of Richy Pitch Album BBE Records Mixing East African poetry with Nigerian cuisine, Angolan nightclubs with Ghanaian arts exhibitions, London offers a rich diversity of Afropolitan culture to explore. If you’re experience of Afropolitan London is limited to the Notting Hill Carnival, then you’re in for a surprise. London’s arts and entertainment scene is catering for the African cultural renaissance, which is happening globally, with exciting events, and Life in Colour is going to make sure you don’t miss a beat. Every month we’ll be highlighting a must-attend Afropolitan event taking place in the city. We kick off the month of June with the AFRI KOKOA launch party of Richy Pitch’s Ghanaian Album Ye Fre Mi Richy Pitch (which translates at ‘They Call Me Richy Pitch). Producer and DJ Richy Pitch moved to Ghana to record an LP with local talent and fuse the classic sounds of Ghanaian music with his own production skills steeped in London swagger. Two years later and back in London, Richy knocked on BBE Records’ door for help delivering Ye Fre Mi Richy Pitch. Needless to say, they obliged. His creation gives the listener a taste of the many styles of Ghanaian and West African music, such as Highlife, Hiplife, Afrobeat and traditional percussion music, combined with a fresh production twist. The launch Party at the Rich Mix, hosted by AFRI KOKOA, will be an exclusive event featuring debut live performances from the LP. Ghanaian rapper extraordinaire M3NSA, singer NDIDI, M.ANIFEST (US), live percussionists and a live DJ are guaranteed to keep your Afropolitan feet grooving this June. We asked Baggy, one of the founders of AFRI KOKOA, what the term Afropolitan means to him? He told us, “To seamlessly mix the best of organic African culture with European culture is what creates a unique Afropolitan culture.” Ye Fre Mi Richy Pitch is fitting testimony to this. I’m sure the launch event will also shine the torch. 5 Jun Cost: £5; £7 after 11pm Time:8pm – 1am Location: Rich Mix, 35 - 47 Bethnal Green Road, E1 6LA Info: 020 7613 7498

Scottsboro by Ellen Feldman Format: Paperback Published by: Picador ISBN: 9780330456142 RRP: £7.99 In 1931, nine black boys sit on death row in Alabama falsely accused of raping two white girls. Their chances look slim but journalist Alice Whittier takes up the story. Told from the perspective of fictional Whittier and “victim” Ruby Bates, Feldman has created a thorough and detailed narrative based on the facts of the trials. This is a gripping page-turner that serves bring the circumstances of a high-profile miscarriage of justice to a wider audience.

Singleholic Sarah Looking for Love in London www.singleholic.com ‘Basta, basta Sarah… Why do you only ever think of marriage? Why not have some fun instead?’ Manuele laughs. ‘Because “fun” is lying in on a Sunday morning, sharing out the newspaper, and laughing together over an article.’ ‘Yes, exactly. I did that last Sunday with Sophie. Tomorrow I’ll do it with Katya.’ Manuele grimaces. ‘That way the sex always stays good.’ ‘Noooo… The whole point is that it’s meant to be with the same person every week. Forever and ever.’ I bang the table. ‘Sex with the same person doesn’t have to be boring. There are lots of different positions you know.’

Format: Paperback Published by: Flamingo ISBN: 0006550681 RRP: £7.99 Rahel and Estha are seven-year-old twins growing up, relatively happily, in Ayemenen, in Kerala, India. But as adults they are pained and hollow. Resentment, bitterness, love, rivalry, abuse, lies and death all play a part in their transformation. The chronology of the story flits between the present and past, leading up to the tragic events that blew the family apart and left its members emotionally wounded. Roy has produced a captivating, haunting, evocative, and beautiful story.

No Place Like Home: A Black Briton’s Journey Through the American South by Gary Younge Format: Paperback Published by: Picador ISBN: 0330369814 RRP: £6.99 Guardian journalist Gary Younge grew up in Thatcher’s Britain. He looked to the States for a stronger sense of cultural identity and decided to follow the trail of the Freedom Riders, from Washington DC to New Orleans, interviewing figures from the civil rights movement along the way. This book is part travelogue and part documentation of self-discovery. His observations are perceptive, his writing candid, and his appeal is broad. It is definitely worth reading.

Manuele nods in agreement. ‘Sure there are. Just like you can feel in touch with your moral side when reading the Guardian, but when your revolutionary impulses are crying out, you can read the Independent and on days when you’re feeling pissed off with the high rate of taxation, you can read the Telegraph.’

33

The God of Small Things by Arundhati Roy

‘Yes, exactly, Manuele!’ I clap my hands gleefully. ‘You can stay faithful to the quality broadsheet newspapers without getting bored!’ ‘Problem is, Sarah, sometimes men have a deep desire to take a peek at GQ and other times we want to get dirty with Playboy. And as much as The Times may try to imitate the tabloids, it’s never going to be a substitute for the real thing.’ ‘Oh, you’re insufferable! Don’t you want to fall in love?’ ‘Love? It doesn’t exist. Hollywood made it up so that it could sell more blockbuster movies.’ He rolls his eyes. ‘You will spend the rest of your life looking for this “love”, never find it.’ POW! Upper cut into the ribs. Is he right? What if love really doesn’t exist? Several world religions don’t believe in love. Maybe these billions of people have it right. ‘No! You’re wrong! Love is not love which alters when it alteration finds or bends with the remover to remove. Oh no, it is an ever fix’ed mark that looks on tempests and is never shaken…’ ‘You’re quoting Shakespeare now?’ Manuele taps his head. ‘Bella, I worry about your sanity. You need to relax. You are only thirty. Look at me, I am thirty-three!’ Bastard. It really bugs me the way men who are older than me claim to be in a worse position age-wise. As if anyone could care less what age a man is. In fact, the older he gets, the more attractive he gets. WE GALS on the other hand, just get wrinklier and wrinklier. Remember how in Sense and Sensibility, Emma Thompson played opposite Hugh Grant as his love interest? Seven years later, Love Actually cast Hugh as the romantic lead, but poor Emma was demoted to middle-aged wife whose husband no longer found her attractive. Let’s face it, the older men get, the larger their pool of choice women. We girlies however, have a much harsher deal…. Will Sarah ever find her man? Find out in Singleholic! Singleholic is available in bookshops and at www.amazon.co.uk.

Dear Counsellor Mike I have a 14 year old daughter and think that she may be pregnant. She was seeing a boy for six months but they have recently split. She has always been a bubbly child but seems to have been pulling away from friends and family. On top of that she is not eating properly and vomiting. I don’t know how to approach her about this. Samantha Dear Samantha Your observations of your daughter are good. I’m sure she will appreciate the fact that you have noticed these changes in her. It would be a good idea for you to sit her down and have ‘heart

your family. There are many things that you could do to help your relationship. You can seek couples counselling as well as going for counselling individually. It is important to talk about how you both feel and see if there is any way you can change your current situation. If you are going to leave, then you need to make sure that you have thought of all the implications. For example, the children – who would take the children, where you would live, visitation rights etc. This can all prove to be very stressful. Be open-minded and realise that your feelings are what are important, but also consider how your children may be affected. Counsellor Mike

When she was appointed Secretary of State for International Development on 12 May 2003, following the resignation of Clare Short, she became the first black woman to sit in the Cabinet of the United Kingdom. A distinctive element of Baroness Amos’ political career is that she has never actually been elected to any public office as every office held has been

an unelected appointment. Following positions in Equal Opportunities, Training and Management Services in local government in the London boroughs of Lambeth, Camden and Hackney, she became Chief Executive of the Equal Opportunities Commission 1989–94. After resigning from the cabinet, Baroness Amos took up a directorship with Travant Capital, a Nigerian private equity fund launched in 2007 and is involved with the 2012 Olympic Committee.

judge in 1996 - one of the first black women to sit as a judge in the UK. Briscoe’s legal practice focuses on criminal law and fraud, principally defending. D: 2000

Bernard Grant was one of many West Indians who took up the British government’s invitation to the colonies to move to the UK for blue-collar employment in 1963. He was for a period a member of the Socialist Labour League. He quickly became a trade union official, and moved into politics, becoming a Labour councilor in the London Borough of Haringey in 1978. As council leader during the Broadwater Farm riot of 1985, in which a policeman, PC Blakelock, was killed, he was thrown into the public eye, when he was widely quoted as saying “The police got

a bloody good hiding”. Grant claimed had been taken out of context, but offered an apology to the family of PC Blakelock. The controversy did not prevent him from becoming MP for Tottenham in the 1987 election, one of only three black MPs at the time. As an MP he backed demands for black sections in the Labour and was recognised as a staunch voice against Police racism. In September 2007 in Tottenham, London, Haringey Council opened the Bernie Grant Arts Centre in his name.
