A Word From The Editor When I think of summer, I think if jazz and lemonade. Long horn notes blowing in the breeze and tall cool glasses taking the edge off the heat. Summer is a season for the senses; a symphony of smells — food and perfume and passion — and splashes of colour. It should come as no surprise that my birthday falls in June. Yes, I’m a summer baby and I love every second of it.

HEALTH & WELLBEING

In my opinion, there’s no better summer month than August. It’s the month of the Notting Hill Carnival. A true celebration of African and Caribbean culture. Sway to the steel pans while your eyes feast on the vibrant costumes. And the energy! Do those men and women playing mas have energy! Take a look at this month’s Afropolitan feature to find out what part Samba is playing in the modern Notting Hill Carnival. With everything in life, the yin has its yang. When we think of the sun we think of the blazing heat on our skin whilst basking in the glory of the sun. But it’s times like these that we should also give thanks for the other wonders of summer, like the shade! Can you name a time when we could appreciate it more…? If you want to find a shady spot, why not check out a gallery. We have a gorgeous array of exhibitions lined up for you to see. Just take a pick at the gallery section. But if you will be spending long days soaking up the sun’s rays, make sure you do it safely. We’ve compiled a survival kit of pointers that you shouldn’t leave home without reading. This is the season of awakening, the most sensual of times! There’s so much to do in London this month, and we have all the top picks in on these pages. Make sure you take part. … and maybe I’ll see you there!

The Scissor Dance is an original dance from the south of the Andes, in Peru, in which two or more dancers (danzak) dance, followed by their respective orchestras of a violin and a harp. Basically, the scissors dance is an impressive manifestation of physical art and skills, but to the Andean man it represents a complex ritual.

Gabriela Yepes, 2008, 19’ 2.00pm – 2.45pm Bar Introduced by Jose Navarro this short film is also part of the Peruvian Scissor Dance theme of the day. The film tells the story of a young girl named Nina. Nina lives in the Peruvian mountains with her mother and dying father. Afro-Beat Airways

Release date: 9 August 2010

8

Afro-Beat Airways showcases an amazing diversity of local rhythms spiced with cosmic AfroAmerican funk, soul and jazz with organ-driven Afro-beat, and raw, psychedelic boogie — just some of the flavours on this super dope compilation by Samy Ben Redjeb, who has travelled the lengths of Ghana and Togo in search of the master tapes, sleeve art, photos, producers and artists involved to document these 15 irresistible tracks and the music scene from the’70s. In the process, he recorded a dozen interviews, scanned 90 pictures and transferred 120 master tapes, all of which tell the story behind the amazing music that can be seen in the well illustrated 44-page full colour booklet accompanying these 75 minutes of heavy West African sounds.

Distant Relatives Release date: 21 May 2010 Expanding on the collaboration begun on the track Road to Zion on Marley’s 2005 album Welcome to Jamrock, Distant Relatives traces hip-hop’s roots to Africa through Jamaican dancehall, reggae and the fusion of rapper Nas’ blistering raps and reggae royal Marley’s forceful, jaded deliveries sound very natural. The emphatic opener “As We Enter” showcases “God’s Son” and the “Junior Gong” brilliantly trading verses over a kicking throwback beat. The album is thoughtful, heartfelt, weighty material, engaging topics that vary from African poverty to the diamond trade without sounding sermonized. Nas is at his best addressing ‘those who got left behind’ on “Strong Will Continue”, while Marley has inherited his father’s ability to make simple phrases hit home, particularly in “Tribes At War” featuring Somalia’s K’Naan. Another track to keep an ear out for are “Everyone deserves to earn, every child deserves to learn”.

Tanguera

After performing to sell-out audiences and gathering rave reviews across the globe, Argentina’s smash-hit tango musical Tanguera comes to Sadler’s Wells for a strictly limited run. Boasting a company of over 50 dancers and musicians, Tanguera tells a story of unrequited love in early 20th century Buenos Aires. When Giselle, a young French woman, arrives in Argentina as one of the first waves of European immigrants, she meets Lorenzo, a port worker who falls in love with her at first sight. But as Giselle falls deeper into Buenos Aires’ seedy underworld, Lorenzo must fight to win her love. This is an adrenaline-charged journey through the world of tango with award-winning choreography by renowned Argentinean dance star Mora Godoy, and a seductive score performed by a full orchestra with one of Argentina’s most celebrated tango singers Marianela live on stage. This spellbinding new show has dazzled audiences in New York, Paris, Berlin, Madrid and Tokyo. London audiences will be swept up in the drama of the Tanguera as it makes its UK premiere this summer. Cost: £10 - £48 Time: 7.30pm, plus 2.30pm weekends Location: Sadler’s Wells Theatre, Rosebery Avenue, EC1R 4TN I nfo: 0844 412 4300

From Verona to Milan, via Harare and Bulawayo, two great friends, Valentine and Proteus, vie for the love of the same woman. When Valentine is banished, their friendship is threatened and only through disguise, deception and intrigue are they reconciled. In a broad, loud, triumphantly energetic ‘township’ style the two actors slip into all of the play’s fifteen characters — from amorous suitors to sullen daughters, depressed servants and even a dog! Using little to no props, a few items of clothing and a set that consists of no more than a trunk, the actors explore the text’s nuances from a distinctly Zimbabwean perspective, bringing Shakespeare’s verse to life in new and unfamiliar cadences. With a watchful eye, great intuition and comic timing, the actors draw the audience into the action and create a soulful and engaging theatrical experience not to be missed. Limited to 100 tickets on a first-come first-served basis. Cost: £10 - 12 Time: 7.30pm Location: Rich Mix, 35 - 47 Bethnal Green Road, E1 6LA Info: 020 7613 7498

& Aug London River

16

London River tells the story of a friendship which develops between two seemingly unconnected people: Elizabeth (Academy Award nominee Brenda Bleythn) and Ousmane (the late Sotigui Kouyate). Both have come to London to search for their children who are missing in the aftermath of the 7/7 bombings. Beautifully detailed and movingly realised by Academy Award nominated director Rachid Bouchareb (Days Of Glory), the film convincingly creates a portrait of a multi-ethnic city struggling to come to terms with the terrorist attacks. At its centre it contains a stunning lead performance from Brenda Blethyn hailed by critics as her strongest since she won a best actress Golden Globe for Secrets and Lies. & Bhutto

This definitive documentary chronicles the life of one of the most complex and fascinating public figures of our time. Educated at Harvard and Oxford, Benazir Bhutto’s life changed forever when her father, Pakistan’s first democratically elected president, chose her to carry his political mantle. When he was overthrown and executed by his handpicked army chief, Benazir swore to avenge her father and restore democracy - or to die trying. In 2007, with the country rolling in turmoil and under the thumb of yet another military dictator, Benazir was called back onto the world stage as Pakistan’s best hope for democracy. With her assassination she transcended politics, leaving a legacy of simmering controversy and undeniable courage that will be debated for years. Surviving Schools out for the summer! Furthermore, the sun is actually shining. Could it be…? Are we having, dare I say it, a proper summer? Well you know what this means, it’s time to put on those shorts and head for the streets! This doesn’t happen every year you know… But before you do, it’s important to make sure you’re ready for the heat, because this sprawling metropolis we call London probably isn’t. When the temperature rises, we Londoners are faced with myriad of problems that we’re not used to. Many of these problems can be damaging to our health. So, to make sure you survive the somewhat tropical urban jungle, we’ve given you a few pointers on keeping safe in the sun.

Summer • Take extra care if you are going to be travelling on the London Underground transport system. The average Tube temperature in summer can be as high as 47˚C. Yep, a whopping 47˚C! Given that most people sweat 1.5 litres a day in the summer — the equivalent of what you would sweat if you had done an hour solid exercise — you can image how much you sweat on a 20-minute Tube journey. Our advice to you is to always carry a bottle of water with you every time you go underground. • The next one’s simple: if you’re planning on hot-stepping around town soaking up the rays, wear some comfortable shoes. As well as making sure your tootsies aren’t throbbing by the time you get home, good shoes will also help your posture. A glam pair of heeling slippers may look nice, but you’ll pay for it later with back problems if you don’t look after your posture. To help improve your general posture, you should ensure that the arches of your feet are supported while standing. Ergonomic shoes now come in a variety of styles — including slippers; it might be worth trying some of these out. If your feet feel frazzled and your back’s aching

a bit, take a break, rest one of your feet on a stool or step and apply pressure for 5 minutes. Then switch feet. Voila!

• Black people, it’s time to dispel a myth. Yes, melanin in skin can be a form of protection from the sun BUT depending on the amount of melanin in your skin you will have more or less protection. So don’t dust your hands off and sit back yet… Depending on skin tone, it has been said that Black people have between 20 and 50 SPF protection from the sun from the Melanin in their skin. Now here’s the science; SPF number is how many times longer a person can sit in the sun before getting burned. For example, if being in the noon sun would cause you to burn in 5 minutes, an SPF of 20 would mean it would take 20 times as long — that’s 1 hour 20 minutes. Great. But what about those long days in the park? Or hours of shopping on Oxford Circus? It’s time to take the sun and Black skin seriously, especially as 27% of people suffering from skin cancer are black. So wear SPF and sunglasses! Even a low SPF of 10 will see you through to the end of the day. • Ladies — and now the metro-

male — despite our long arduous search, I am sad to confirm that there is no perfect bag. Handbags can cause strain on your shoulders, while rucksacks can cause strain towards the back area. However, a lot depends on the amount inside the bag… You know what’s coming; it’s time to remove the kitchen sink from tote you’ve been dragging around! The heavier your bag, the more strain caused, which can lead to severe back and shoulder problems in later years. The recommended weight for a handbag to is 4.4lbs, whereas rucksacks can weigh up to 25lbs without becoming a health issue, or about 15% of someone’s body weight. So you know, you’ll definitely be able to get your keys, purse, phones, make-up sunscreen and water in the bag and you’ll probably even have a little weight to spare! • The last one’s easy: be sure to have fun! It’s your summer after all. No doubt you won’t be alone, so keep an eye out for dehydration in your friends and family and make sure they empty their overloaded bags. And if you’ve learned anything new in this article, pass it on!

CA$H CURRY A warped vision often produces the hippest and edgiest stuff in filmmaking. With a budget of £3 million Cash & Curry is set to be the most controversial British film for years… Welcome to multi-cultural London where the racist UK Front are fed up with the immigrants ‘invading their country’. Added to their woes is the fact that London has been carved up between two rival drug lords - one black, the other Asian. This makes a mockery of the UK Front’s war cry: “Ain’t no black in the Union Jack!” Raj and his friends are tired of being “errand boys” at the bottom of the food chain. Desperate ambition leads Raj into a dangerous double-cross that lands them in the middle of a gang between the biggest drug lords in London: Gabbar and Isaac. The two crime lords control the supply of narcotics in the London Borough of Brent – Gabbar controls west Brent whilst his deadly rival Isaac controls east Brent To elude capture, Raj and his friends are forced to submerge themselves in

farm life much to the dislike of the local racist skinhead who takes exception to this ‘multicultural invasion’ of the old English countryside…! Cash & Curry is a fast-paced thriller with a very dark undercurrent running through its veins featuring a stellar cast lead by Ameet Chana (Bend it Like Beckham/Wild West), Pooja Shah (Bend it Like Beckham / Eastenders) and Ronny Jhutti (Nina’s Heavenly Delights/ Shameless). Added to this mix are character actors Manish Patel (Triads, Yardies & Onion Bhajees/ Chopratown), Lawrence Stevenson (RSC’s Othello/ King Lear), Richard Angol (Camp Xray/ Kidulthood) and Brian Jackson (man from Del Monte). This unique comedy thriller also features cameo appearances from Faria Alam, Makosi Musambasi, Kinga Karolczak and Lee Latchford Evans (from platinum chart topping band Steps). A touch of Bollywood glamour is provided by Shaana Diya (Namaste London) and Sofia Hayat (Bollywood Star/Unforgettable).

This month, Life In Colour is giving away 10 copies of the Cash & Curry DVD! To get yours, just email your name and address to info@lifeincolour. uk.com. The first time names picked at random will be able to get their hands on this laugh-aminute comedy thriller.

Afropolitan

Notting Hill Carnival! By Minna Salami

A combination of the words African and cosmopolitan 1. A multidimensional African influenced by the Diaspora 2. Someone who identifies with Africa, but also other regions and cultures of the world 3. A person of African descent who is passionate to change perceptions of Africa Afropolitan event of the month – August 2010 If there is one event that all London Afropolitans can proudly claim it’s the Notting Hill Carnival. Since 1966, the carnival, which has its roots in the Afro-Caribbean community, has been to thank for the two most vibrant days of the year that London has to offer. Notting Hill carnival gets better with each year, and this will be no exception. As a street carnival, it’s more similar to the Trinidad & Tobago carnival than the Rio carnival. That said, its trademark is how it blends the two world famous carnivals together, combining hyped street partying with the more glamorous parading of Rio de Janeiro. Samba schools did not start performing at Notting Hill until 1984, and the real Rio style parades have only bloomed in the past decade. Paraiso Samba, London’s primary samba school, collaborates with Brazilian dancers and musicians who parade alongside Paraiso’s own passistas, highlights and Rainha do Bateria (queen of the drums). Hana Cornwall (pictured) is an Afropolitan passista for Paraiso Samba and also a founder of Simply Samba, a group of professional samba dancers. She loves Notting Hill carnival because it’s a (free) way to celebrate a cultural blend of London’s Afro-descendants. Afropolitans, she believes, are people of African heritage, who are successful, ambitious and cosmopolitan, often living in countries outside of Africa as citizens of the world. “Although Notting Hill Carnival originates from the Caribbean community, I’m pleased that it has embraced and created opportunities for other communities to take part. Samba brings a taste of another culture, liberation, happinesss, fantastic dancing and outlandish costumes,” she says. On that note, make sure you don’t miss either the samba parades, or the spectacular partying this August. Notting Hill Carnival 29 & 30 August 2010 W: http://www.thenottinghillcarnival.com/

Pirates of the 21st Century by Nigel Cawthorne Format: Paperback Published: 6 July 2009 Publisher: John Blake Publishing Ltd Pages: 278 ISBN-13: 978-1844548071 RRP £11.99 Over the past few years, piracy has once again become the scourge of the high seas. Throughout 2008, close to 90 ships were seized in the Gulf of Aden alone and, in many cases, the pirates were paid million-dollar ransoms to release them. In this book, the author explores the reason for this modern-day phenomenon and seeks to find out who the men are behind it. What started as a patrol to combat commercial plundering of the fish stocks has now grown into a highly organised and lucrative business. Cawthorne also questions how the international community and its peacekeeping forces can try to bring stability and security back to the oceans of the world.

Tales of Freedom by Ben Okri Format: Paperback Published: 6 July 2009 Publisher: Rider & Co Pages: 208 ISBN-13: ISBN-13: 978-1846041594 RRP £7.99 “Tales of Freedom” offers a haunting necklace of images, which flash and sparkle as the light shines on them. Quick and stimulating to read, but slowly burning in the memory, they offer a different, more transcendent way of looking at our extreme, gritty world - and show the wealth of freedom that’s available beyond the confines of our usual perceptions.

www.singleholic.com ‘Basta, basta Sarah… Why do you only ever think of marriage? Why not have some fun instead?’ Manuele laughs. ‘Because “fun” is lying in on a Sunday morning, sharing out the newspaper, and laughing together over an article.’ ‘Yes, exactly. I did that last Sunday with Sophie. Tomorrow I’ll do it with Katya.’ Manuele grimaces. ‘That way the sex always stays good.’ ‘Noooo… The whole point is that it’s meant to be with the same person every week. Forever and ever.’ I bang the table. ‘Sex with the same person doesn’t have to be boring. There are lots of different positions you know.’ Manuele nods in agreement. ‘Sure there are. Just like you can feel in touch with your moral side when reading the Guardian, but when your revolutionary impulses are crying out, you can read the Independent and on days when you’re feeling pissed off with the high rate of taxation, you can read the Telegraph.’

Kimberly Chang has her world turned upside-down when she moves with her mother from their home in Hong Kong to New York. But their new life doesn’t quite live up to their expectations living in a vermin-ridden apartment in Brooklyn, the pair only have a temperamental oven to keep warm. They have nothing but debt and neither of them speaks a word of English. While her mother spends her days earning two cents a garment at a sweatshop, intellectually gifted eleven-yearold Kim faces a new and trying challenge: school. Exiled by language, estranged in a new culture and weighed down by staggering poverty, Kim must learn to translate not just her language but who she is as she straddles these two very different worlds. In this powerful story, Jean Kwok spins a moving tale of hardship and triumph, of heartbreak and love, of all that’s said without words and all that gets lost in translation.

Singleholic Sarah Looking for Love in London

‘Yes, exactly, Manuele!’ I clap my hands gleefully. ‘You can stay faithful to the quality broadsheet newspapers without getting bored!’ ‘Problem is, Sarah, sometimes men have a deep desire to take a peek at GQ and other times we want to get dirty with Playboy. And as much as The Times may try to imitate the tabloids, it’s never going to be a substitute for the real thing.’ ‘Oh, you’re insufferable! Don’t you want to fall in love?’ ‘Love? It doesn’t exist. Hollywood made it up so that it could sell more blockbuster movies.’ He rolls his eyes. ‘You will spend the rest of your life looking for this “love”, never find it.’ POW! Upper cut into the ribs. Is he right? What if love really doesn’t exist? Several world religions don’t believe in love. Maybe these billions of people have it right. ‘No! You’re wrong! Love is not love which alters when it alteration finds or bends with the remover to remove. Oh no, it is an ever fix’ed mark that looks on tempests and is never shaken…’ ‘You’re quoting Shakespeare now?’ Manuele taps his head. ‘Bella, I worry about your sanity. You need to relax. You are only thirty. Look at me, I am thirty-three!’ Bastard. It really bugs me the way men who are older than me claim to be in a worse position age-wise. As if anyone could care less what age a man is. In fact, the older he gets, the more attractive he gets. WE GALS on the other hand, just get wrinklier and wrinklier. Remember how in Sense and Sensibility, Emma Thompson played opposite Hugh Grant as his love interest? Seven years later, Love Actually cast Hugh as the romantic lead, but poor Emma was demoted to middle-aged wife whose husband no longer found her attractive. Let’s face it, the older men get, the larger their pool of choice women. We girlies however, have a much harsher deal…. Will Sarah ever find her man? Find out in Singleholic! Singleholic is available in bookshops and at www.amazon.co.uk.

HEALTH & WELLBEING Ask Counsellor Mike...

Dear Counsellor Mike

I thought I was in the perfect relationship. My man does

I have just come out of a long term relationship which didn’t end very well. I feel as though I didn’t really know my ex partner throughout our relationship and that something was missing. We have a son which was the reason we stayed together. I love my son very much and I couldn’t carry on with the pretence, which why it ended. The problem now is that we are having difficulty with visitation arrangements concerning our son. Sometimes I think it would be easier to be out of my son’s life for a while until it settles down but I don’t know if this is a good or bad idea? Please advise? Derek

everything for me, he cooks, cleans, helps me financially, he is funny and kind and I worship him. I couldn’t think of a better relationship until the day he confessed that he has been cheating on me, not once but a few times. Devastation, shock and hurt were my instant reactions and I was not quite sure why he felt the need to cheat on me in the first place. He said that he loves me, but he is sexually deprived and doesn’t understand himself why he does it. I thought our sex life was great, but he obviously doesn’t feel the same and said it was not my fault. Of course I feel it’s my fault and I feel hopeless. I’m not sure if I want to have sex with him now. Where do I go on from here?

Elaine

I understand how hurt and angry you must feel. You were led to believe by him that you were in the perfect relationship. You should not blame yourself. It is an issue that he has to deal with by himself and this could be something relating to his past history. It might be worth him seeking counselling to find out what makes him look for sex elsewhere. For you however, you need to come to terms with the issue and work out how you will move forward, with or without him. You might also want to consider counselling either by yourself of as a couple. Once you are both willing to take those steps change will take place. Counsellor Mike

Dear Counsellor Mike My wife and I have been trying for a baby for five years through IVF and it was wonderful news when my wife fell pregnant

Dear Counsellor Mike

after all that time. However, last week she miscarried and like

I have been having difficulty lately with my eldest son who is 14 yrs old. I am a single parent and his father isn’t around and really wouldn’t be much of a role model if he was. He doesn’t listen to me as much and seems very angry in life. He says it’s nothing to do with me but I wonder if he resents me. What do suggest I do? Elizabeth

me, is devastated. She is always in tears and is hysterical and of course I do my best to console her, but I am not sure if I am doing enough. I feel she is suffering more as a woman and I don’t know what to say to make it better. Please help? Marvin Marvin Marvin I am very sorry to hear of your loss. This is a very delicate situation as emotions are all over the place. I know your wife is emotional but you are also suffering too and you need to deal with your feelings to help her. Having support from family and friends will help, but dealing with the problem together and facing the future is what you both need to workout. Counselling may be a route to take to get your feelings out in the open with a qualified counsellor to mediate. All the best Counsellor Mike

Elizabeth Your son is 14, a teenager going through puberty, which could be one reason for his anger. There are a lot of emotions going on around him at this time. If you are concerned regarding his father, talk to him and find out what he is thinking. Tell him you are there for him and suggest a day out shopping or go to a restaurant and make it fun. You could also ask him what he wants to do and then you can gently bring issues into the conversation that you are concerned about. The more relaxed he is the more he will open up. All the best Counsellor Mike

39

Elaine

Derek Adults need to be responsible for their child’s well-being and focus on having a healthy relationship with their parents, whether the separation is good or bad, both have to be civil towards one another especially with father-son relationships. A mother can do a lot to nurture her son, but can not show her son how to be the best man they can be. This is why they need to always establish a strong positive relationship with their father. Both adults need to make things amicable as possible for the child. Make arrangement for visits every weekend or second weekend. If communication has broken down between father and mother, ask a mutual friend or relative you can trust to act as ago between so their relationship isn’t affected. This could affect them in later years and how they deal with relationships when they grow into adults and have children themselves. A father and son relationship is very important for their future well being. Counsellor Mike

When she was appointed Secretary of State for International Development on 12 May 2003, following the resignation of Clare Short, she became the first black woman to sit in the Cabinet of the United Kingdom. A distinctive element of Baroness Amos’ political career is that she has never actually been elected to any public office as every office held has been

an unelected appointment. Following positions in Equal Opportunities, Training and Management Services in local government in the London boroughs of Lambeth, Camden and Hackney, she became Chief Executive of the Equal Opportunities Commission 1989–94. After resigning from the cabinet, Baroness Amos took up a directorship with Travant Capital, a Nigerian private equity fund launched in 2007 and is involved with the 2012 Olympic Committee.

judge in 1996 - one of the first black women to sit as a judge in the UK. Briscoe’s legal practice focuses on criminal law and fraud, principally defending. She has subsequently been appointed as Chairman of the Magisterial Committee of the Judicial Studies Board.

D: 2000

Bernard Grant was one of many West Indians who took up the British government’s invitation to the colonies to move to the UK for blue-collar employment in 1963. He was for a period a member of the Socialist Labour League. He quickly became a trade union official, and moved into politics, becoming a Labour councilor in the London Borough of Haringey in 1978. As council leader during the Broadwater Farm riot of 1985, in which a policeman, PC Blakelock, was killed, he was thrown into the public eye, when he was widely quoted as saying “The police got

a bloody good hiding”. Grant claimed had been taken out of context, but offered an apology to the family of PC Blakelock. The controversy did not prevent him from becoming MP for Tottenham in the 1987 election, one of only three black MPs at the time. As an MP he backed demands for black sections in the Labour and was recognised as a staunch voice against Police racism. In September 2007 in Tottenham, London, Haringey Council opened the Bernie Grant Arts Centre in his name.
